• ActionScript 2: Event doesn't fire?

  So I have a soundHandler class that's supposed to play sounds and then point back to a function on the timeline when the sound has completed playing. But somehow, only one of the sounds plays when I try it out. EDIT: After that sound plays, nothing happens, even though I have EventHandlers set up that are supposed to do something.   I have 3 tables: shops, PRIMARY KEY cid,zbid shop_items, PRIMARY KEY id shop_inventory, PRIMARY KEY id shops a is related to shop_items b by the following: a.cid=b.cid AND a.zbid=b.szbid shops is not directly related to shop_inventory shop_items b is related to shop_inventory c by the following: b.cid=c.cid AND b.id=c.iid Now, I would like to run a query which returns a.* (all columns from shops). That would be: SELECT a.* FROM shops a WHERE a.cid=1 AND a.zbid!=0 Note that the WHERE clause is necessary. Next, I want to return the number of items in each shop: SELECT a.*, COUNT(b.id) items FROM shops a LEFT JOIN shop_items b ON b.cid=a.cid AND b.szbid=a.zbid WHERE a.cid=1 GROUP BY b.szbid,b.cid As you can see, I have added a GROUP BY clause for this to work. Next, I want to return the average price of each item in the shop. • How to use an adjacency matrix to determine which rows to 'pass' to a function in r?

  New to R, and I have a long-ish question: I have a shapefile/map, and I'm aiming to calculate a certain index for every polygon in that map, based on attributes of that polygon and each polygon that neighbors it. I have an adjacency matrix -- which I think is the same as a "1st-order queen contiguity weights matrix", although I'm not sure -- that describes which polygons border which other polygons, e.g., POLYID A B C D E A 0 0 1 0 1 B 0 0 1 0 0 C 1 1 0 1 0 D 0 0 1 0 1 E 1 0 0 1 0 The above indicates, for instance, that polygons 'C' and 'E' adjoin polygon 'A'; polygon 'B' adjoins only polygon 'C', etc. The attribute table I have has one polygon per row: POLYID TOT L10K 10_15K 15_20K ... A 500 24 30 77 ... Where TOT, L10K, etc. are the variables I use to calculate an index. There are 525 polygons/rows in my data, so I'd like to use the adjacency matrix to determine which rows' attributes to incorporate into the calculation of the index of interest. For now, I can calculate the index when I subset the rows that correspond to one 'bundle' of neighboring polygons, and then use a loop (if it's of interest, I'm calculating the Centile Gap Index, a measure of local income segregation). E.g., subsetting the 'neighborhood' of the Detroit City Schools: Detroit <- UNSD00[c(142,150,164,221,226,236,295,327,157,177,178,364,233,373,418,424,449,451,487),] Then record the marginal column proportions and a running total: catprops <- vector() for(i in 4:19) { catprops[(i-3)]<-sum(Detroit[,i])/sum(Detroit[,3]) } catprops <- as.data.frame(catprops) catprops[,2]<-cumsum(catprops[,1]) Columns 4:19 are the necessary ones in the attribute table. • Big O Complexity of a method

Answer: counting the total number of end occurrences after EACH (or is it? Not specified in the assignment, point 3 depends on this) start. 2) What is its complexity? Answer: the first loops iterates over the string completely, so it's at least O(n), the second loop executes only if start char is found and even then partially (index at which start was found + 1). Although, big O is all about worst case no? So in the worst case, start is the 1st char & the inner iteration iterates over the string n-1 times, the -1 is a constant so it's n. But, the inner loop won't be executed every outer iteration pass, statistically, but since big O is about worst case, is it correct to say the complexity of it is O(n^2)? Ignoring any constants and the fact that in 99.99% of times the inner loop won't execute every outer loop pass. 3) Rewrite it so that complexity is lower. What I'm not sure of is whether start occurs at most once or more, if once at most, then method can be rewritten using one loop (having a flag indicating whether start has been encountered and from there on incrementing count at each end occurrence), yielding a complexity of O(n). In case though, that start can appear multiple times, which most likely it is, because assignment is of a Java course and I don't think they would make such ambiguity. Solving, in this case, is not possible using one loop... WAIT! Yes it is..! Just have a variable, say, inc to be incremented each time start is encountered & used to increment count each time end is encountered after the 1st start was found: inc = 0, count = 0 if (current char == start) inc++ if (inc > 0 && current char == end) count += inc This would also yield a complexity of O(n)? Because there is only 1 loop. Yes I realize I wrote a lot hehe, but what I also realized is that I understand a lot better by forming my thoughts into words...

• GROUP BY and SUM distinct date across 2 tables

  I'm not sure if this is possible in one mysql query so I might just combine the results via php. I have 2 tables: 'users' and 'billing' I'm trying to group summed activity for every date that is available in these two tables. 'users' is not historical data but 'billing' contains a record for each transaction. In this example I am showing a user's status which I'd like to sum for created date and deposit amounts that I would also like to sum by created date. I realize there is a bit of a disconnect between the data but I'd like to some all of it together and display it as seen below. This will show me an overview of all of the users by when they were created and what the current statuses are next to total transactions. I've tried UNION as well as LEFT JOIN but I can't seem to get either to work. Union example is pretty close but doesn't combine the dates into one row. You might have expected an instance of ActiveRecord::Base. The error occurred while evaluating nil.new_record? However, if I change the order in which I a) build the paintingtitles and painting descriptions in the paintings_controller new method and b) show the paintingtitles and painting descriptions in the form partial then I get the nil on the paintingtitles.new_record? call. I always get the nil for the objects I build in second place. The ones I build first aren't nil in my view. Is it possible that I cannot build objects for 2 different associations at the same time? • Javascript returns Nan in IE, FF ok

  im very new to javascript, and writing this script to add up a shopping cart and print out subtotals and totals. it works in FF but not in IE. this function is called by onclick of one of three select options with a value of 0-25. it is in a js file called in the head. what it does is get the selected values as variables, parseint them, adds and multiplies, and changes the innerHTML of the table to reflect the subtotals, and total. I have literally hit my head on the table over this. You can imagine how frustrating it is to be able to write the entire rest of the site beautifully, but then fail at adding 3 numbers together. help please!

• Code to generate random numbers in C++

  Basically I have to write a program to generate random numbers to simulate the rolling of a pair of dice. This program should be constructed in multiple files. The main function should be in one file, the other functions should be in a second source file, and their prototypes should be in a header file. First I write a short function that returns a random value between 1 and 6 to simulate the rolling of a single 6-sided die.Second, i write a function that pretends to roll a pair of dice by calling this function twice. My program starts by asking the user how many rolls should be made. Then I write a function to simulate rolling the dice this many times, keeping a count of exactly how many times the values 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12(each number is the sum of a pair of dice) occur in an array. Later I write a function to display a small bar chart using these counts that ideally would look something like below for a sample of 144 rolls, where the number of asterisks printed corresponds to the count: 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Next, to see how well the random number generator is doing, I write a function to compute the average value rolled. • jquery - clone nth row of a table?

  I'm trying to use jquery to clone a table row everytime someone presses the add-row button. Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my code? I'm using HTML + smarty templating language in my view. • problem assigning array to variable

  Hi. I'm sure this is a simple one. I have an array in a simplexml object. When I try to assign the array to a variable, it only assigns the first index of the array. How can I get it to assign the whole array. • jQuery .find() doesn't return data in IE but does in Firefox and Chrome

  I helped a friend out by doing a little web work for him. Part of what he needed was an easy way to change a couple pieces of text on his site. Rather than having him edit the HTML I decided to provide an XML file with the messages in it and I used jQuery to pull them out of the file and insert them into the page. It works great... In Firefox and Chrome, not so great in IE7. I was hoping one of you could tell me why. I did a fair but of googling but couldn't find what I'm looking for. Based on the message box with [object Object] I'm assumed that .find was working in IE but since I can't index into the array with [0] or check it's Length I'm guessing that means .find isn't returning any results. Any reason why that would work perfectly in Firefox and Chrome but fail in IE? I'm a total newbie with jQuery so I hope I haven't just done something stupid. That code above was scraped out of a forum and modified to suit my needs. Since jQuery is cross-platform I figured I wouldn't have to deal with this mess. Edit: I've found that if I load the page in Visual Studio 2008 and run it then it will work in IE. So it turns out it always works when run through the development web server. Now I'm thinking IE just doesn't like doing .find in XML loaded off of my local drive so maybe when this is on an actual web server it will work OK. I have confirmed that it works fine when browsed from a web server. Must be a peculiarity with IE. I'm guessing it's because the web server sets the mime type for the xml data file transfer and without that IE doesn't parse the xml correctly.

• load search results into a div that toggles with other divs

  I am working with a page that has multiple divs that toggle. This function works. A search function was added and this works too. The problem with the page as it exists currently: The search bar was placed on the "default" div and the results load below the bar into another div that is invisible when empty. The results div is inside this first default div. If you toggle to another div, you lose the default div and can't get back to it. For this reason, I moved the search bar to the left navigation where the other toggle links are situated. I also moved the search results div out of the default div to "stand on its own." What I am trying to do: Make the search button show the div with the results as well as find the results. Basically, to integrate the search function into the array/toggle function. The search function is in one .js file and the toggle function is in a different .js file. I keep thinking there must be a way to get "onclick" to call from both .js files so that I don't have to do a bunch of extra work combining the two functions that already exist and work separately. I am a Javascript newbie learning by examples and haven't been able to figure this out. I have never seen a working example of this and my searches haven't produced one. I would be very grateful for any help. Hope I explained the problem adequately. • What are the Rails best practices for javascript templates in restful/resourceful controllers?

  First, 2 common (basic) approaches: # returning from some FoosController method respond_to do |format| # 1. render the javascript directly format.js { render :json => @foo.to_json } # 2. render the default template, say update.js.erb format.js { render } end # in update.js.erb $('#foo').html("<%= escape_javascript(render(@foo)) %>") These are obviously simple cases but I wanted to illustrate what I'm talking about. I believe that these are also the cases expected by the default responder in rails 3 (either the action-named default template or calling to_#{format} on the resource.) The Issues With 1, you have total flexibility on the view side with no worries about the template, but you have to manipulate the DOM directly via javascript. You lose access to helpers, partials, etc. With 2, you have partials and helpers at your disposal, but you're tied to the one template (by default at least). All your views that make JS calls to FoosController use the same template, which isn't exactly flexible. Three Other Approaches (none really satisfactory) 1.) Escape partials/helpers I need into javascript beforehand, then inserting them into the page after, using string replacement to tailor them to the results returned (subbing in name, id, etc). 2.) Put view logic in the templates. For example, looking for a particular DOM element and doing one thing if it exists, another if it does not. 3.) Put logic in the controller to render different templates. For example, in a polymorphic belongs to where update might be called for either comments/foo or posts/foo, rendering commnts/foos/update.js.erb versus posts/foos/update.js.erb. I've used all of these (and probably others I'm not thinking of). Often in the same app, which leads to confusing code. Are there best practices for this sort of thing? It seems like a common enough use-case that you'd want to call controllers via Ajax actions from different views and expect different things to happen (without having to do tedious things like escaping and string-replacing partials and helpers client side). Any thoughts?

• Handling Model Inheritance in ASP.NET MVC2

  I've gotten myself stuck on how to handle inheritance in my model when it comes to my controllers/views. So, I do things like list all the procedures: public class ProcedureController : Controller { public virtual ActionResult List() { IEnumerable<Procedure> procedures = _repository.GetAll(); return View(procedures); } } but now I'm kinda stuck. Basically, from the list page, I need to link to pages where the specific subclass details can be viewed/edited and I'm not sure what the best strategy is. I thought I could add an action on the ProcedureController that would conjure up the right subclass by dynamically figuring out what repository to use and loading the subclass to pass to the view. I had to store the class in the ProcedureType object. I'm wondering if this is a good approach? This makes determining the URL easy. It makes reusing the Procedure display code easy. Another approach is specific controllers for each subclass. It simplifies the controller code, but also means many simple controllers for the many procedure subclasses. Can work out the shared Procedure details with a partial view. How to get to construct the URL to get to the controller/action in the first place? Time to not think about it. Hopefully someone can show me the light. Thanks in advance.

• What language/framework (technology) to use for website (flash games portal)

  Hello, I know there are a lot of similar questions on the net, but because I am a newbie in web development I didn't find the solution for my specific problem. I am planing on creating a flash games portal from scratch. It is a big chance that there will be big traffic from the beginning (millions of pageviews). I want to reduce the server costs as much as possible but in the same time to not be tide to an expensive contract as there is a chance that the project will not be as successfully as I want and in that case the money would be very little. The question is : what technology to use? I don't know any web dev technology yet so it doesn't matter what I will learn. My web dev experience is a little php 8 years ago, and from then I programmed in C++ / Java- game and mobile development. I like Java and C syntax and language very much and I tend to dislike dynamic typing or non robust scripting (like php)- but I can get along if these are the best choices. The candidates are now: - Grails (my best for now) Ruby on Rails Cake PHP Other technologies (Google App Engine, Python/Django etc...) I was considering at first using pure C and compiling the web app in the server- just to squeeze more from the servers, but soon I understand that this is overkill. Next my eyes came on Ruby - as there is a lot of buzz for it's easiness of use. Next I discovered Grails and looked at Java because it is said that it is "faster". But I don't know what this "Faster" really means on my needs, so here comes the first question: 1) What will be my biggest consumption on the server, other than bandwidth, for a lot of flash content requests? Is it memory? I heard that Java needs a lot of memory, but is faster. Is it CPU? I am planning to take some daily VPS.NET nodes at first, to see if there is a demand, and if the "spike" is permanent to move to a dedicated server (serverloft.com has some good offers), else to remain with less nodes. I was also considering developing in Google App Engine- cheap or free hosting to use at first - so I can test my assumption- and also very easy to use (no need for sys administration) but the costs became high if used more ( 3 million games played / month .. x mb/ each). And the issue with Google is that it looks me in this technology. My other concern is scalability (not only for traffic/users, but as adding functionality) My plans are to release a functional site in just 4 weeks (just the basics frontend and some quick basic backend - so I can be able to modify some things and add games manually) - but then to raise it and add more things to it. I am planning to take a little different approach than other portals so I need to write it from scratch (a script will not do). 2) Will Grails take much more resources than RoR or Php server wise? I heard that making it on Java stack will be hardware expensive and is overkill if you don't make a bank application. My application will not be very complex (I hope and i will try to) but will have a lot of traffic. I also took in account using CDN for files, but the cheapest CDN found was 5c/GB (vps.net) and the cost per gb on serverloft (http://www.serverloft.com/dedizierte-server/server-details.php?products=4) is only 1.79 cents/GB and comes with the other resources either. I am new to this domain (web). I am learning the ropes and searching on the web for ~half of year but don't have any really practical experience, so I know that I must have some naive thinking and other issues that i don't know from now, so please give me any advice you want regarding anything, not just the specific questions asked. • preg_replace replacing with array

  What I want to do is replace the "[replace]" in input string with the corresponding vaule in the replace array. The total number of values will change but there will always be the same number in the replace array as in input string. I have tried doing this with preg_replace and preg_replace_callback but I can't get the pattern right for [replace], I also tried using vsprintf but the % in <table width="100%"> was messing it up. All help is greatly appreciated! • Does this type of function or technique have a name?

  HI there, I'm slightly new to programming, more of a hobby. I am wondering if a the following logic or technique has a specific name, or term. My current project has 7 check boxes, one for each day of the week. I needed an easy to save which boxes were checked. The following is the method to saved the checked boxes to a single number. Each checkbox gets a value that is double from the last check box. • 1-DimArray Counting same elements (0,1)

  Hello, I have a 1-dim array that fills up a table of 40 random elements (all the values are either 0 or 1). So i wanne "count" the largest row of the values net to each otherto each other.. Meaning for example : 111100101 = the longest row would be 1111 (= 4 elements of the same kind closest to each other). So 011100 would result in the longest row being 3 elements (3 x 1). My problem i have no idea how to check upon the "next element" and check if its a 0 or 1. Like the first would be 1111 (count 4) but the next would be a 0 value = meaning i have to stop counting. My idea was placing this value (4) in a other array (example: 111100101) , and place the value of the 1's back on zero. And start the process all over again. To find the largest value i have made a other method that checks up the biggest value in the array that keeps track of the count of 0's 1's, this is not the problem. But i cannot find a way to fill the array tabelLdr up. (having all the values of the group of elements of the same kind (being 0 or 1). • Parsing ip addresses in php

  I am trying to get the number of active connections (Real Time) from a log file by IP connected and having a Play status but instead, it's giving me the total number of IP with status play. The number doesn't decrease at all. Keeps on increasing as soon as a new ip is added. How can I fix it? ' play actions'; But whenever I use my code, I am getting "Number of connections: xxxxx(actual count of IPs). My concern is that I only need the count of IPs with PLAY status. If that IP changes to STOP then it wont count.

• Indexing on only part of a field in MongoDB

  Is there a way to create an index on only part of a field in MongoDB, for example on the first 10 characters? I couldn't find it documented (or asked about on here). The MySQL equivalent would be CREATE INDEX part_of_name ON customer (name(10));. Reason: I have a collection with a single field that varies in length from a few characters up to over 1000 characters, average 50 characters. As there are a hundred million or so documents it's going to be hard to fit the full index in memory (testing with 8% of the data the index is already 400MB, according to stats). Indexing just the first part of the field would reduce the index size by about 75%. In most cases the search term is quite short, it's not a full-text search. A work-around would be to add a second field of 10 (lowercased) characters for each item, index that, then add logic to filter the results if the search term is over ten characters (and that extra field is probably needed anyway for case-insensitive searches, unless anybody has a better way). Seems like an ugly way to do it though. [added later] I tried adding the second field, containing the first 12 characters from the main field, lowercased. It wasn't a big success. Previously, the average object size was 50 bytes, but I forgot that includes the _id and other overheads, so my main field length (there was only one) averaged nearer to 30 bytes than 50. Then, the second field index contains the _id and other overheads. Net result (for my 8% sample) is the index on the main field is 415MB and on the 12 byte field is 330MB - only a 20% saving in space, not worthwhile. I could duplicate the entire field (to work around the case insensitive search problem) but realistically it looks like I should reconsider whether MongoDB is the right tool for the job (or just buy more memory and use twice as much disk space). [added even later] This is a typical document, with the source field, and the short lowercased field: { "_id" : ObjectId("505d0e89f56588f20f000041"), "q" : "Continental Airlines", "f" : "continental " } Indexes: db.test.ensureIndex({q:1}); db.test.ensureIndex({f:1}); The 'f" index, working on a shorter field, is 80% of the size of the "q" index. I didn't mean to imply I included the _id in the index, just that it needs to use that somewhere to show where the index will point to, so it's an overhead that probably helps explain why a shorter key makes so little difference. Access to the index will be essentially random, no part of it is more likely to be accessed than any other. Total index size for the full file will likely be 5GB, so it's not extreme for that one index. Adding some other fields for other search cases, and their associated indexes, and copies of data for lower case, does start to add up, which I why I started looking into a more concise index.
