• How to control admission policy in vmware HA?

  Simple question, I have 3 hosts running 4.1 Essentials Plus with vmware HA. I tried to create several virtual machines that filled 90% of each server's memory capacity. I know that vmware has really sophisticated memory management within virtual machines, but I do not understand how the vCenter can allow me even to power on the virtual machines that exceed the critical memory level, when the host failover can be still handled. Is it due to the fact that virtual machines does not use the memory, so that it is still considered as free, so virtual machines can be powered on ? But what would happen if all VMs would be really using the RAM before the host failure - they could not be migrated to other hosts after the failure. The default behaviour in XenServer is that, it automatically calculates the maximum memory level that can be used within the cluster so that the host failure is still protected. Vmware does the same thing ? The admission policy is enabled. Vmware HA enabled.

  Came across another gem of an article by Joel Spolsky. It's a pretty old article written in June of 2004, has lot of tidbits and I really enjoyed reading it, so much in fact that I read it twice! So hit the link below and give it a read if you haven't already, How Microsoft Lost the API War - Joel Spolsky excerpt, "I first heard about this from one of the developers of the hit game SimCity, who told me that there was a critical bug in his application: it used memory right after freeing it, a major no-no that happened to work OK on DOS but would not work under Windows where memory that is freed is likely to be snatched up by another running application right away. The testers on the Windows team were going through various popular applications, testing them to make sure they worked OK, but SimCity kept crashing. They reported this to the Windows developers, who disassembled SimCity, stepped through it in a debugger, found the bug, and added special code that checked if SimCity was running, and if it did, ran the memory allocator in a special mode in which you could still use memory after freeing it."

  I had Ubuntu 12.04 initially installed on my laptop. I upgraded to 12.10 then 13.04. Everything worked fine, including wireless. After adding a new memory card ( I only had 2 gb and one memory slot free) my wireess stopped working. I backed up all my data and reinstallled Ubuntu 13.04. Everything works fine except wireess. I bought this laptop in 2010 from Japan.   We are running JRun 4 and have lots of crashes. I am trying to understand where the problems are coming from and have modified the jrun.xml file to enable metrics logging. The Adobe documentation says it's "Threads currently running". Which is correct? Also, what does all this mean? If I'm reading it correctly, I have 100 total threads, and 3 busy ones. So what are the other 97 threads doing if they are neither busy nor delayed?

• 1080p playback on external monitor

  My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

• Unity desktop became transparent after installing VBox Guest Additions [closed]

  I have installed Ubuntu Desktop x64 12.01.1 as guest in VirtualBox. When I installed VirtualBox Guest Additions, Unity desktop (top bar and left program icons bar) becomes invisible. The problem was found in VirtualBox 4.1.20 and still exist in 4.1.22. Reinstalling doesn't help. Maybe someone knows how to overcome this issue? • Stop VLC player from saving effects & filter settings

  VLC Player v1.1.11 Windows 7 Ultimate VLC player launches each new video with setting I used once to brighten a dark video. On a second computer, VLC player opens all videos rotated 270 which was a feature I used once. I now have to manually uncheck Image adjust on one computer & uncheck Transform on another for each video to have it play without these custom settings. I've custom mapped VLC Hotkeys that I use extensively. As a result, I do not want to "reset preferences" and lose my Hotkey mapping. VLC Tools Settings Video Effects Basic Image Adjust (Brightness, Contrast, etc.) VLC Tools Settings Video Effects Basic Transform (Rotate 90, 180, 270) Is there a setting I'm not finding to stop VLC from applying a one time adjustment to all videos?

• full screen flash problems

  when i play flash videos from sites such as youtube, the videos initially play ok. However when the videos are full screened, a number of problems arise. Usually when the full screen button is first clicked, the video will take up the full screen, but will be frozen (however the video audio can still be heard). It can take several attempts to get the video to play in full screen. The video is also frozen if something triggers osd-notify (changing the volume, getting a new email etc.). Any ideas what might be going wrong?

  I want to setup my Ubuntu 12.04 with OpenCL(Open Computing Language) support for i7 2600k and Radeon HD5870. My Monitor is connected to the integrated Graphics of the i7. Intel OpenCL SDK is installed and working. Iteration of avaliable OpenCL devices shows 2 entries for Intel. As recommended I installed AMD APP SDK 2.6 first and then the fglrx driver. I installed fglrx from Ubuntu repositories. This works fine till here. When I run aticonfig --inital -f and restart the system I get into trouble. • How To Completely Disable Subtitles in VLC

  If you watch a lot of videos using VLC, you might have noticed that it enables subtitles by default if they are there, which can be pretty annoying at times. Here’s the quick tip to disable them entirely. Of course, you can always turn them back on if you want on an individual video basis. Disable Subtitles Head into the VLC preferences, and then click the All button at the bottom of the screen. On the left-hand side, choose Video –> Subtitles/OSD, and then uncheck the boxes for “Autodetect subtitle files”, Enable sub-pictures, and On Screen Display. That should do it, unless the subtitles are forced in the video for some reason. Note: Certain video formats like MKV can sometimes have subtitles enabled even though there isn’t a separate subtitles file. This is why you need to remove “Enable sub-pictures” as well, which totally disables the on-screen text. You can choose to only uncheck the autodetecting of subtitles instead if you’d prefer. And of course, you can simply right-click on the video, head to Video –> Subtitles Track and then choose the subtitles if you still wanted them. Note: this only works if the “enable sub-pictures” option is still enabled. And thus ends the tale of disabling those fracking subtitles. Starbuck approves. • Unable to extend desktop

  I'm trying to hook up my TV to my computer as a gaming/multimedia center but I'm having troubles setting it up. I have a custom built machine running Windows 7 RC. It has an ATI Radeon 4800 video card with 2 dvi output and 1 S-video output. I have an s-video to composite adapter that connects to my tv. (It's an old TV with only Cable, composite, and s-video connections). I can switch the desktop to my TV without a problem, but I can't duplicate or extend my desktop onto it. I've installed the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center, but it won't let it work any more readily than Windows would. Any suggestions? Would using an s-video cable instead of the adapter change anything? (The only reason I use the adapter is because it came with the graphics card) (Edit) I installed the latest drivers and I can now duplicate the screen (show on one monitor and on the TV), but I still can't extend the desktop.

  I'm looking for (free) Ubuntu YouTube software that can perform two tasks (could be separate software): display on screen notification (like transmission does when a download has finished) when a new video has been uploaded to your personal subscription box download videos in max quality (preferably automatically once a new video has been uploaded from specific channels / series) What I've found so far: All Video Downloader: only downloads manually, can't select quality MiniTube: Doesn't associate with your personal account, doesn't notify when new video has been uploaded from your subscriptions. Annoying GUI. Quite buggy. If this software doesn't exist yet, I'll try to make it myself.

• What camera to choose for using with JMF (Java Media Framework)

  For the past 2-3 weeks I've been searching for different ways to implement custom video streaming and in more general video capturing and manipulating, going through DVR-cards, Video Capture Cards and stuff like that. Somehow JMF was able to stay out of my sight for all this time, but since I find out about it I'm more and more sure that this is a comfortable level for me to start playing around with video and stuff. One major topic that occurs to me while searching for more info was the presence of many posts where people were complaining about the fact that any particular camera ( most of the time I think they mean web cameras) doesn't work with JMF. Even though there are a lot of different cameras (not necessarily a web cam) that are not that expensive I want to play it safe and buy one that is proven to work well with the JMF. Also due to lack of experience maybe this is irrelevant but since I'll buy the camera mostly for learning and experimenting I want to have the maximum freedom possible to mess with different features, options and so on.

• How do I get Graphics drivers / bluetooth / card reader working on an Acer Aspire V3-571G?

  A couple of days ago I bought an Acer Aspire V3-571G laptop without a system installed on it. The only thing that was there was Linux Linpus. I created a bootable CD with Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit - I read that my processor was 64 bit and that it might be a good configuration for my gear (I'm not especially fluent with all the computer stuff, still trying to learn) and replaced Linpus with Ubuntu. Everything seemed to work fine, but there're few exceptions to that which came pass my way. My bluetooth doesn't work. It seems to be switched on, but when I check my system settings the button is actually off, and I can't drag it 'perminently' to the 'on' position. Tried a couple of commands I found on the net, none of them helped and there was no word whatsoever in my BIOS settings about enabling bluetooth. My card reader has some serious problems with copying more than one file at a time. I tried to put some music on my phone through a MicroSD card adapter (because my bluetooth doesn't work) and it got stuck every single time I copied an album on it. • How do I make h.264 work on YouTube on Firefox on Windows 7 64 bit?

  Various news articles state that Firefox supports h.264 on Windows since version 20. As of this writing the version is 24, yet Firefox still can't play most YouTube videos. I did the HTML5 opt-in and tested both Firefox and Nightly. I also made sure media.windows-media-foundation.enabled in about:config is enabled, and it is by default both on Firefox and Nightly. What's wrong and how do I fix it? Edit: This video works. This video fails. They're both MP4 (right click video - stats for nerds), so Firefox's h.264 support works at least some of the time. Edit: When I go to a YouTube video that doesn't work, click Share - Embed and then copy-paste the src of the iframe tag into the address bar, the video works.

• Track url from Amazon S3 using Google Analytics

  I couldn't find any decent pay per view video solutions for low budget clients. So I'm considering using a membership extension with Joomla and hosting the video with amazon S3. The only issue is that once someone has signed up to view or download the video if they have any web development experience they will be able to get the url of the video and freely publish it on the web. How can this be prevented? It looks like it can be done using IAM User Temporary Credentials - AWS SDK for PHP but the client would prefer not to have to pay someone to spend hours writing custom php code to get this to work. With Amazon s3 I could at least check the log files I guess to manually monitor the url but is there a way to track the url with Google Analytics? or is there a more elegant solution?
