  • How do I get the Virtual Machines folder on Win7?

    - by xpmore
I'm writing a tool called XP-More, which should help manage Windows 7 Virtual Machines. The first thing the tool has to do when launched is find the VM folder. However, turns out that folder is not listed as a Windows Special Folder. I use a workaround, but it's unreliable. Ideally, Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.VMFolder) or so would have done the job, but VMFolder is a fiction of my imagination. Is there any real way to get that folder?

  • Hadoop write directory

    - by FaultyJuggler
Simple question but reading through documentation and configuration I can't quite seem to figure it out. How do I A) know where hadoop is writing to on the local disk and B) change that For initial testing I setup HDFS on a 20gb linux VM - to it we've added a 500gb networked drive for moving towards prototyping the full system. So now how do I point HDFS at that drive, or do I simply move the home directory/install with some slight change in setup and restart the process?

  • why do you write tests and what is a unit test and how does it differ other types of testing ?

    - by dfafa
im curious as to know, why tests are written? why would bother writing it ? why not just compile and run the code or view it in your browser, click around and test out stuff. i mean i can understand, a crawler that checks your web app's functions....but why is tests written, maintained and treated as important as the main feature codes ? is it crucial to always write and use tests ?

  • File mode for creating+reading+appending+binary

    - by MihaiD
I need to open a file for reading and writing. If the file is not found, it should be created. It should also be treated as a binary for Windows. Can you tell me the file mode sequence I need to use for this? I tried 'r+ab' but that doesn't create the files if they are not found. Thanks

  • Class definition thinks setting a variable is a Unit?

    - by DeLongey
Writing out a Scala class and problem here is that the compiler thinks that the code is a unit not returning the proper value. It's a method used to set a property in the class: def setObject(`object`:StripeObject):StripeObject = { this.`object` = `object` } The error is: type mismatch; found : Unit required: com.stripe.StripeObject The full class is: case class EventData(var previousAttributes: HashMap[String,Object], var `object`:StripeObject) extends StripeObject { def getPreviousAttributes = { previousAttributes } def setPreviousAttributes(previousAttributes: HashMap[String, Object]) = { this.previousAttributes = previousAttributes } def getObject = { `object` } def setObject(`object`:StripeObject):StripeObject = { this.`object` = `object` } } How do I make sure it doesn't return a Unit?

  • STL container to pop() by priority?

    - by Pirate for Profit
I'm writing a thread-pool for Qt as QRunnable doesn't handle event loops in new threads. Not too familiar with STL, what would be the best way to pop() something by priority? Priority should probably be a property of MyRunnable imo, but I can always give that info to an STL container when adding the runnable to the queue.

  • Should I bother with C++ or go straight to C#?

    - by Pat Riley
I have been writing embedded C applications for almost 20 years. In the last few years I have written quite a few PC based GUI interfaces in Visual C so I could interface my embedded systems to a PC. Although my primary work will still be in deeply embedded C, I have finally decided to move my PC based tools into Ruby - (for quick scripting type stuff) and C++ or C# for GUI based interfaces and applications. Should I bother with C++ or just move straight to C#?

  • Android layouts within layouts, with separate classes handling their input?

    - by Demonofloom
Hey all, I have created a program in Java that uses Jpanels within Jpanels. One example of this is having a side view containing buttons that change the main view when pressed. The main view also has buttons that can be used to alter itself. I am trying to re-create this on the android. I have my layout set up from an xml, with a side panel containing buttons and the main view. There is another xml that contains what I want in the main view. Now I am struggling to get this separate xml to be displayed in the main view and can’t figure out how I would get the class to handle its own input. I don’t want to paste the code into the main.xml as I want to keep things object orientated and each view needs some custom elements such as different textviews. An example of what I am trying to convert for the android is below:- //The ViewInt class has its own layout ViewInt tempView = new ViewInt(i, mFloorNo); //The viewInt class is then added to the main window. mainWindowPanel.add(tempView); This small bit of code would create a view, add it to the main view and then any input in the main window is handled by that class, but at the same time any input not in this main window is handled by another class (probably the root class). Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. To clarify: The program has a side panel layout, containing buttons. And a main view layout that is empty. I am trying to set a .xml layout to this main view layout, and have it so that if any buttons are pressed in that main view then a class for that layout will handle it.

  • iPhone App made using XCode 3.2.3 does not run on 3.1.3 OS

    - by balexandre
I can't figure this out and I thought that someone might run through the same thing. I have XCode 3.2.3 (Pre Release with OS 4 beta) and I started to create my application, after the final touches and everything worked ok, I changed the Simulator - 4.0 to Simulator - 3.1.3 (latest iPhone OS) and I could never start my app again :-( Does anyone know what I should do? I created a simple Screencast of the problem so everyone can see what I'm writing about. Thank you for all the help.

  • Limits GUIs in C#

    - by xarzu
What are the limits of writing a C# app when you want a truly impressive GUI? At what point does one have to leave Visual C# behind and go into WPF? Also, if I choose to go with WPF, do I have to ditch the Visual Studio IDE and go with Expression Studio?

  • How to notify a Windows .net service from PHP on Linux?

    - by Louis Haußknecht
I'm writing a service in C# on Windows which should be triggert by an PHP driven web frontend, which runs on Linux. Both processes share the same SQL Server 2005 database. There is no messaging middleware available atm. The PHP process inserts an row in a SQL Server table. The Windows process should read this entry and process it. I have no experience in PHP, so what would you suggest to notify the Windows process?

  • Write to text file using ArrayList

    - by Ugochukwutubelum Chiemenam
    The program is basically about reading from a text file, storing the current data into an ArrayList, then writing data (from user input) into the same text file. Kindly let me know where I am going wrong in this sub-part? The data inside the text file is as follows: abc t1 1900 xyz t2 1700 The compiler is showing an error at the line output.format("%s%s%s%n", public class justTesting { private Scanner input; private Formatter output; private ArrayList<Student> tk = new ArrayList<Student>(); public static void main(String[] args) { justTesting app = new justTesting(); app.create(); app.writeToFile(); } public void create() { Text entry = new Text(); Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.printf("%s\n", "Please enter your name, ID, and year: "); while (input.hasNext()) { try { entry.setName(input.next()); entry.setTelNumber(input.next()); entry.setDOB(input.next()); for (int i = 0; i < tk.size(); i++) { output.format("%s%s%s%n", tk.get(i).getName(), tk.get(i) .getTelNumber(), tk.get(i).getDOB()); } } catch (FormatterClosedException fce) { System.err.println("Error writing to file."); return; } catch (NoSuchElementException nsee) { System.err.println("Invalid input. Try again: "); input.nextLine(); } System.out.printf("%s\n", "Please enter your name, ID, and year: "); } } public void writeToFile() { try { output = new Formatter("testing.txt"); } catch (SecurityException se) { System.err .println("You do not have write access permission to this file."); System.exit(1); } catch (FileNotFoundException fnfe) { System.err.println("Error opening or creating file."); System.exit(1); } } }

  • How do I move my git repo down level in the directory tree?

    - by edude05
I'm currently writing an app in C# using using Visual Studio. As such, VS2010 created a Solution directory with my project directories inside. So my Hierarchy is like this: Solution .git project1 project2 What I'd like to do is make it like this: Solution Project 1 .git Project 2 As of right now the files in the solution are tracked, except for the project 2 (so stuff like project.sln for example). Is there a way I can do this without rewriting the history? Thanks in advance.

  • What is the fastest / best Base64 en/decoder for Java ?

    - by mP
Just found the MIG Base 64 utility but its over 6 years old since its last release. It would appear to be quicker than the Apache commons equivalent but I have yet to confirm by writing up an actual test. Has anyone verified its correctness which is always a worry. If someone takes a look at the methods, please note i a referring to the non fast methods which make assumptions trading possible correctness for pure speed.

  • How do I keep my app from tracking bot requests as views

    - by trustfundbaby
This is a general question about writing web apps. I have an application that counts page views of articles as well as a url shortner script that I've installed for a client of mine. The problem is that, whenever bots hit the site, they tend to inflate the page views. Does anyone have an idea on how to go about eliminating bot views from the view count of these applications?

  • event handling in C++

    - by Max
Hi. I'm writing a game in C++, and I'm trying to get it to recognize keyboard and mouse events. Google tells me that boost.signal is suitable for event handling, but none of the code samples or tutorials I've found tell me how to associate a keypress or mouseclick with a function. Can anyone shed any light on this?

  • iPhone to Android Market

    - by BahaiResearch.com
(I am coming from an iPhone experience) When we create an iPhone app, Apple gives us a http URL that we can put on web pages that when clicked will open iTunes and give the user a chance to buy on their desktop. As Android has no "iTunes" Windows/Mac application on the desktop, what do I link to on my Web pages/email marketing so that users can go and buy the Android apps we are writing? Ian
