  • Simulating a belongs_to_many in rails

    I have a situation where in theory I would need to use a belongs_to_many relationship. I have an Example model and a Sentence model. Each example object has one sentence but these sentences are not necessarily unique. So, for example, I could have two example models that each have one sentence that is the same sentence. I'm not sure how to go about doing this in rails. I tried using has_and_belongs_to_many, but ran into problems. It seems that I only need the belongs_to :many part of that relationship. Ideally it would look something like this, but I know there is no belongs_to :many. Example has_one :sentence end Sentence belongs_to_many :examples end

  • Can I combine atom feeds from separate resources into one?

    I have two resources for which I would like to generate feeds; they are called podcasts and posts. The problem is that when I include the auto_discovery_link in my templates, I have to add one for each of the two atom feeds that I've generated. The reason why this is a problem is that there are now two feeds for users to choose from, and most people probably won't realise that they need both so will only pick one. Is there a way to combine atom feeds from different resources into one atom feed? Like application.atom or something? I'm using builder to generate the feed.

  • Rails - Format number as currency format in the Getter

    I am making a simple retail commerce solution, where there are prices in a few different models. These prices contribute to a total price. Imagine paying $0.30 more for selecting a topping for your yogurt. When I set the price field to t.decimal :price, precision:8, scale:2 The database stores 6.50 as 6.5. I know in the standard rails way, you call number_to_currency(price) to get the formatted value in the Views. I need to programmatically call the price field as well formatted string, i.e. $6.50 a few places that are not directly part of the View. Also, my needs are simple (no currency conversion etc), I prefer to have the price formatted universally in the model without repeated calling number_to_currency in views. Is there a good way I can modify my getter for price such that it always returns two decimal place with a dollar sign, i.e. $6.50 when it's called? Thanks in advance.

Right now when I click the "Finish" button, facebook permissions dialogue is initiated but before I am prompted for the actual permission submission window, the browser freezes. Just like I have pressed Esc during the process. In fact status bar of the browser says "Stopped". Any help is highly appreciated.

How should i go about checking for Post :has_many :comments. Should I stub Post.comments method and then check this with by returning a mock object of array of comment objects? Is testing for AR associations really required ?

  • Rails Multiple Table Inheritance question

    I am starting to implement an MTI solution and have a basic question. I have 3 physical models - SMSNotifications, EmailNotifications, TwitterNotifications and they are subclasses of notification. At times in my code, I want to say Notifications.find(:all)so that I can get a set of results sorted by their creation time. Then I want to do things based on their subclass. What is the way to write Notifications.find(:all) and have Rails look through the subclass tables and combine the results? Right now Rails still thinks I have a physical Notifications table which goes against my MTI design. I am also considering the possibility that I should be using STI instead. I would probably have 10 empty columns per row but if getting all notifications requires a query for each type of notification, then I feel like this could be a big issue. Thanks!

  • Rails page caching and flash messages

    I'm pretty sure I can page cache the vast majority of my site but the one thing preventing me from doing so is that my flash messages will not show, or they'll show at the wrong time. One thing I'm considering is writing the flash message to a cookie, reading it and displaying it via javascript and clearing the cookie once the message has been displayed. Has anyone had any success doing this or are there better methods? Thanks.

  • link_to for calling an action, instead of a button_to

    I'd like to call an action with a link_to button without being redirected to another page(I don't want ajax). For you to have an idea, I'm trying to accomplish a sort "link button" in a search page. So, when the link is clicked, the page should be refreshed showing the list ordered as I tell it in the action. If I do the following in my view, it will ask me for a template called as the action, and I don't want it: <%= link_to 'M&Aacute;S RELEVANTES', search_filter_relevance_path %> My routes file looks like this: map.search_filter_relevance "/anuncios/buscar", :controller => 'announcements', :action => 'search_filter_relevance' And my controller looks like this(I haven't developed the functionality yet): def search_filter_relevance end Any help on this will be appreciated.

    I recently configured an EC2 instance with a Git deployment workflow that resembles Heroku, but I can't seem to figure out how Heroku prevents the Git post-receive hook from outputting 'remote:' on each line.   • Resque: Slow worker startup and Forking

    I'm currently moving my application from a Linode setup to EC2. Redis is currently installed on a remote instance with various worker instances interacting with the queue. Thats all going fantastic. My problem is with the amount of time it takes for a worker to be 'instantiated' and slow forking. Starting a worker will usually take between 30 seconds and a minute(from god.rb starting the worker rake task and the worker actively starting work on the queue). I could live with that, but I've not experienced such a wait time on my current Linode production box so I believe its one of my symptoms to a bigger problem. Next issue is that jobs that took a second or less in my previous environment now seem to take about 5 to 10 times longer.. I'm assuming this must be some sort of issue with my Ubuntu install on EC2? One notable difference is that I'm running REE 1.8.7-2010.01 in my new setup, and REE 1.8.6 on the old Linode boxes. Anyone else experienced these issues?

  • Where to put to_xls and from_xls in a rails app

    So I have a model that I need to be able to serialize to/read from an Excel(XLS) document. I am a bit of a loss as to where this code actually belongs. My initial thought is that the to_xls is a view, but after poking around and seeing things like (to|from)_xml and (to|from)_json in ActiveRecord, I was wondering if maybe this stuff belonged in the model. Alternatively, does it belong in just a whole separate container somewhere? For what it's worth, users will be downloading models from the site, modifying them in excel, then posting them.

    I use devise and cancan gems and have simple model association: user has_many subscriptions, subscription belongs_to :user. And have no problems with UsersController. When i delete following lines from SubscriptionsController: load_and_authorize_resource :user load_and_authorize_resource :subscription, through: :user before_filter :authenticate_user! Have no problems at all. So the issue in these lines or in Ability.rb. Any suggestions?

  • In Sinatra, best way to serve iPhone layout vs. normal layout?

    I'm writing a Sinatra app which needs to render different layouts based on whether the user is using an iPhone or a regular browser. I can detect the browser type using Rack-Mobile-Detect but I'm not sure of the best way to tell Sinatra which layout to use. Also, I have a feeling that how I choose to do this may also break page caching. Is that true?     I'm trying to grade a quiz application I would like to make. I have a questions model with and ask(the actual question), 4 choices(a-d), and a correct answer(string). In the view I have the 4 question being diplayed then the correct answer choice (This is just a test for functionality) and then I created a text_field to accept the users answer choice and a button to refresh the index action which has the scoring logic, for now.. --Do I need to put the text_field within a form_tag? <p>1. <%= h @question.q1 %></p> <p>2. <%= h @question.q2 %></p> <p>3. <%= h @question.q3 %></p> <p>4. <%= h @question.q4 %></p> <p>Answer: <%= h @question.correct %></p> <%= text_field_tag :choice, params[:choice] %> <%= button_to "Grade", {:controller => 'site', :action => "index"} %> <p> <%= @answer %></p> Heres the index controller action def index @question = Question.find(1) if @question.correct == params[:choice] @answer = 'right' else @answer = 'wrong' end end Its not really working. The textfield is supposed to take a letter choice like 'a' or 'c' and compare it with the correct answer in the database. I would love this to work by radiobuttons, but I'm a newbie to rails so I thought I'd take baby steps. So if anyone can help me with how to fix this by string, or preferably by radiobuttons, I'd really appreciate it.
