• Failed to mount to nfs server with "Program not Registered"

  I'm trying to setup nfs server on Fedora 17 and I'm getting "Program not Registered" error when I'm trying to mount. I guess the main reason for this is rpcbind. I'm a newbie in linux, so I don't know what info should I provide you with. • Ubuntu 10.04 upgrade: gdm-simple-greeter no seat-id found

  Upgraded a machine straight from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04. After a successful upgrade, GDM shows no users on the login screen, with the error message: "gdm-simple-greeter no seat-id found" Users can log in via text mode. A recovery user can startx without issue. I'm convinced this is an issue with GDM and/or ConsoleKit. What are my options? I've debated a reinstall but would rather not. I've also thought of switching to KDM or XDM instead. I've filed a launchpad bug--no responses yet.

• Set up heads up for two people

  Is there a way to set up a Mac or Linux so that one can connect two mice and two keyboards with both users having independent input on the screen with their respective mice and keyboards? I'd like to set up an environment for pairwise programming, and in particular have two developers be able to concurrently edit different documents on the same computer screen, but each person having different keyboards and mice. I'd be much obliged for any input and direction.

• Editing tags in bunch of MP3 files?

  I have a bunch of files whose filename looks like "<Track> - <Title> - <Artist>.mp3". I'd like to rewrite their MP3 Title tag to be "<Track> - <Title>.mp3" so that each song is displayed correctly on my elcheapo MP3 player. Since I rarely edit MP3 files anyway, MP3 Tag Tools 1.2 Build 008 from 2003 was good enough, but I can't figure out how to do this with this application. I just tried MP3Tag 2.46, but couldn't figure out if it can do this (created a new Action, to no avail). I also tried TagScanner 5.1.558, without success. Does someone know of a good, free Windows application that can do this? Thank you.

• How to boot windows 8 in a dual boot along with windows 7?

  I have installed a WIndows 8 evaluation about a week ago. Usually, it asks me every time I turn on my computer whether to boot into windows 8 or windows 7. The default was windows 8 after 30 seconds. I changed that just yesterday to be default windows 7 after 5 seconds. And after I changed the setting, I went ahead and went into windows 8 and did my work. Today, when I turned on my computer, it is failing to ask me which one to boot it in. It simply boots directly into Windows 7. Is there any reason for this? Can I no longer boot into Windows 8?

• Windows crash report pop up 3 times when Windows XP starts after updating IE7 to IE8

  I just updated Internet Explorer 7 to IE 8. After the reboot, I have the Windows XP "send error report" dialog 3 times all with this info in it: AppName: update_kb24b8.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16981 ModName: urlmon.dll ModVer: 8.0.6001.18904 Offset: 0002df76 I uninstalled/updated all of my plugins and I still have this error 3 times each time I log in. Anyone know what is update_kb24b8.exe I didn't found a Microsoft KB with this number... BTW, after these 3 errors, everything s working well, including IE... Thanks!

• greyed out folder in OS X

  Hi all, I installed the intel compiler on my Mac (10.6), and it installed fine, but the folder in which it is installed (/opt, i.e. at the root) is not visible by default, and when I use the Finder "go to" feature, it appears, but as greyed out. What does it mean? I also checked out the permissions, and the only odd thing is that there is an @ at the end of permissions. Any ideas? I'm asking because while the intel compiler is installed (all the files are there), I cant use it from XCode (3.2), and I'm wondering whether this could be why. Thank in advance A

• Dell Media Direct is rebooting my machine when it goes into sleep mode

  I've got a Dell Studio 1535 laptop, which shipped w/ Vista 32-bit. I've since formatted and installed Windows 7 64-bit. Everything has been fine for months, but recently, every time I leave my machine unattended and it goes to sleep, it wakes with the Dell Media Direct splash screen, and then goes to the "Windows was not shut down properly..." dialog that asks if you want to boot safe mode/start Windows normally/etc. The stupid button is also stuck on currently, but even when it is off, the problem still occurs. From the searching I've done, I've learned that the program is installed on its own partition, but I'm fairly certain I formatted everything. See screenie of my partitions: How can I stop the madness? Update: I've removed the 39 MB OEM Partition and it is still happening.

However, you can not split a test so I do not want the next test to begin if there is not enough time within the specified working hours of the day to complete it. Also, I would like to begin each day with a set-up period before the actual testing can begin. Is there a way to automatically begin each day with a setup period and have tasks that can not complete before the end of the specified work day defer starting until the next day?

• Hosting DokuWiki on a Stick

  I have a rather middlish DokuWiki on a stick project documentation which I've always used offline, since I was the only author which did documentation. Now the mentioned project is somewhat expanding, and I need a way and a place to host it somewhere. Can anyone recommend where such a place might be found? (few several beginner questions will follow now) Also, (at this point I might mention that I chose DokuWiki because of it "just works" attitude and because I didn't want to learn server adminstration and the like ...) I'm interested, how much are Wiki systems "compatible"? What I mean under compatible? As far as I understood DokuWiki saves data as text files. If I were to wish to convert it to some other Wiki system would it be possible? Or some other format more suitable for printing (at some point it will be necessary to convert a lot of documentation to a manual format for users). All advices and constructive approaches to this appreciated.

  Which is the preferable of the following two processors? Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 1.70 GHz, 256K Cache, 400 MHz FSB Willamette Intel® Celeron® Processor 2.40 GHz, 128K Cache, 400 MHz FSB Northwood Details: A few months ago my motherboard died, so I bought a used computer that had a 2.4GHz Celeron. My old system had a 1.7GHz Pentium 4, so now I’m trying to decide which CPU to use. Obviously a P4 is preferable over a Celeron, but the Celeron is (significantly?) faster than the P4. I’m wondering if the faster Celeron might be better for certain tasks (ie, stronger but dumber is better at some things than smarter but weaker). I tried Googling for some reviews and comparisons for graphs to get a clear depiction of which is better overall, but found nothing that helped. (I did manage to find one page that indicates (apparently by poll, not benchmark) that the Celeron is better.) So which CPU should I use? Does anyone know of some graphs that I can use to compare the two? The system is a general-purpose machine for word-processing, Internet, and casual games (not Crysis, but not Solitaire either). It will be running Windows XP. The board is a 478 with 400MHz FSB.

• Changing the cell range of conditional formatting in LibreOffice Calc

  Is there any way of changing the range of conditional formatting in LibreOffice Calc (version 3.6)? I have a set applied already to a range of cells, but there is no obvious way of changing which cells a given set of conditional formatting is applied to. I either have to copy and paste the formatting, which results in multiple entries in the conditional formatting (which makes it difficult to manage), or delete the entire thing and create a new one every single time I want to change the range of cells. • Colors differ in the dual monitor

  I use a dual monitor. The colors appear entirely different on the new monitor than they do on my laptop. When you are selecting colors etc, to be included in a website design, it totally freaks me out. Is there no software solution that finds how the settings of one of the monitor is and puts that to the second one? Otherwise what all settings do I need to change manually on the second monitor to make it appear as it does on the laptop? Thanks in advance.

• BIOS corrupted? How to proceed? Acer Travelmate 290

  I have a older ACER Travelmate 290 (manufactured in 2002 or 2003), which I recently tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10. After doing the upgrade process it appeared as if I had a problem with my x server configuration, as on the first reboot post-install I heard the Ubuntu startup sound, but had a black screen. I thought I would then reboot again to drop down into text-mode to trouble shoot the x configuration problem. However, when I tried rebooting, something went wrong and since then when I start up the machine I get absolutely nothing except the first hardware check (i.e. HDD light flashes, CD/DVD drive spins, etc.). Other than that the screen remains totally black and I have no HDD or processor activity at all. I have tried restarting it a number of time holding down all kinds of key combinations to try and coax it into the BIOS (if possible) with no luck. I have also tried putting in both a live Linux disc and a Windows install disk without any luck. With a disk in the drive it will spin for a few seconds and then stop. All this has lead me to suspect that the BIOS is somehow corrupt (not sure about the right terminology). I have tried putting a new BIOS image and installer program downloaded from ACER on a USB key to see if it will run when I start up the machine, but no luck. I'm not sure if this method of interacting/updating/flashing the BIOS will work outside of Windows/DOS as both OSs are mentioned kind of ambiguously in the documentation. I have also taken the laptop case apart and inspected the various cards and cannot find any obviously burned out components. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point in terms of components to try, or how to try and load a new BIOS image onto the board. Any advice here would be great, especially from those with experience with this particular line of laptops. Thanks!

  If I use the 'cd' BASH built-in in a command substitution, it prints extra stuff to stdout, but only when piped to, eg., less. $ echo `cd .` # The output is a single newline, appended by echo. $ echo `cd .` | less # less displays: ESC]2;my.hostname.com - tmp/testenv^G (END) What's going on there? This behavior isn't documented in the bash man page for cd. Obviously, running just 'cd' in a command substitution is silly, but something like NEWDIR=`cd mypath; pwd` could be useful. I solved this by instead using NEWVAR=`cd mypath > /dev/null 2>&1; pwd` but I still want to know what's going on.   In need of shell scripts / bash commands to verify data integrity of local harddrives, usb-drives, etc, ... Like the famous www.heise.de/download/h2testw; or something that is at least common within repositories. (h2testw writes a specific datastring over and over onto the medium, then reads it again to verify if it was written correctly and displays write/read time/speed.) please no dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdx bs=1k && dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/null bs=1k since it won't verify if everything was written correctly. It is only a test if read/write is successful to the device. So far, I'm not too happy with badblocks -w -v /dev/sdx1 either, since it seems rather slow and I don't know what it exactly writes, and if it considers wear-leveling on flash media. There is also a program named F3 http://oss.digirati.com.br/f3/ that needs to be compiled. Designed after h2testw, the concept sounds interesting, i'd just rather have it as a ready to go bash script.

• Formatted a Bootcamped drive as a dynamic disk, now can't boot to either Mac or Windows

  I was trying to create an extra partition to get a file from the Windows side of my Macbook Air to the Mac side, and I accidentally made the disk dynamic without realizing it. I am now unable to boot to the Mac side (holding Alt to go into the system manager at startup doesn't even list the Mac partition), and the Windows side blue screens during boot (goes so quickly that it doesn't even get to the error code before restarting). What can I do to fix the issue? I don't know how to make a bootable flash drive that a Mac will recognize, and Disk Utility (via Internet Recovery) couldn't do anything.   I have two computers with gigabit LAN, one running Windows 7 and the other running Vista. I have a D-Link DIR-655 router, with gigabit LAN ports. I created a shared directory on the Vista computer, mapped it as a network drive on the Win 7 computer, and tried copying a 2 GB file... and it's going at 900 KB/s Yep... 900 kilobytes per second, about 7 Mb/s. Why so slow? Any ideas?

• How do I stop VMware Workstation 6.5 from giving up input focus for no reason on Ubuntu 10.4?

  After patching some kernel modules, I got VMware Workstation 6.5.4 running on my Ubuntu 10.4 x86_64 machine. However, now my Windows XP SP3 guest instance cannot keep mouse input captured for any length of time. I can sometimes activate a control in the guest if a double click very quickly, but it's not reliable (and extremely annoying). Everything appears to be fine in Unity; the problem just appears when I'm running the instance in the VMware window.
