• What are some good ways to promote my Android application?

  I'm a new Android developer and I just released a free, open source tipping calculator app called Tippy Tipper. I created this app to get myself familiar with Android and to hopefully provide a good example app for other new developers to look at. Now that I've overcome the challenges of learning how to program, test and release my Android app, I've come across a new challenge: marketing! What are some good ways to promote my app to the Android community? Can anyone with some experience talk about how they did this successfully with their own app?

• How do i run the Android command line tools?

  I'm still pretty new to Android and programming in general, and I can't seem to get the command line tools packaged with the Android SDK to work. I'm running Mac OSX and each time I try to run layoutopt, for example, the terminal returns, *-bash: cmd: command not found * Also, is it okay to have my SDK located in the Developer directory and my android project in some unrelated directory when using these tools?

• Programmatically created GridView cells don't scale to fit screen

  I've read a ton of other responses about GridView already but almost all deal with the XML format (which I had working). I wanted to learn the programmatic way of designing Android, though, so I'm trying to build most of this app without XML. All I define in XML are the GridView and the first TextView. After that I add the other LinearLayouts in onCreate(). I would like to have a 2 column GridView containing a title and several (4 for now) LinearLayouts. I realize from documentation that the GridView won't scale cells unless they have a gravity set, but no matter how I try to do this I can't get it to work. After adding two cells, my GridView tree would look like: GridView -> TextView (colspan 2) -> LinearLayout (Vertical) -> TextView -> LinearLayout (Horizontal) -> TextView -> TextView -> LinearLayout (Horizontal) -> TextView -> TextView -> LinearLayout (Vertical) -> TextView -> LinearLayout (Horizontal) -> TextView -> TextView -> LinearLayout (Horizontal) -> TextView -> TextView I've tried about every combination of FILL and FILL_HORIZONTAL I could think of on either the outermost LinearLayouts, or also trying on the TextViews and inner LinearLayouts. No matter what I do, the LinearLayouts I add are always sized as small as possible and pushed to the left of the screen. Meanwhile, the first TextView (the colspan 2 one) with only CENTER_HORIZONTAL set is correctly centered in the screen. Its as if that TextView gets one idea of the column widths and the LinearLayouts get another! (If I add the FILL Gravity for it, it also moves all the way left.) I believe I had this working accidentally with 100% XML, but I would prefer not to switch back unless this is known to not work programatically. Any ideas what I can try to get this working?

• Proper Install Order For Visual Studio 2010 with SQL Server 2008 and Office 2007?

  I want to create a Windows 7 64-bit (Ultimate) virtual machine with: Visual Studio 2010 (Ultimate) Office 2007 Enterprise (with Visio 2007) SQL Server 2008 (with SSIS and SSRS) but I am not sure if there is a correct order to install those items such that there will not be a loss of "awareness" of one application from another on that list? For example, I want to make sure Visual Studio knows that Office exists but also that Visual Studio knows that SQL Server exists but if I install SQL Server before Office will that wipe out any data access drivers that are needed by VS 2010 if Office is installed after SQL Server? There are a lot of components and I never gave it a thought that install order would matter but I have a feeling it does. Ultimately I want to create a VM that I can save and use a base development VM from which to create additional VMs from.

• Are there any GOOD javascript addins for Visual Studio?

  In our daily work we maintain some rather large Javascript libaries. We use VS2008 and while they made some improvements to the Javascript IDE, I still find it lacking. There is no outlining, no collapsing, or other ways to keep the code organized. I have tried js-addin and JSLint which crash and don't have the features I want, respectively. I have actually gone as far as running Aptana Studio as their Javascript IDE is much better than what I can get out of Visual Studio. I'm getting tired of having to maintain 2 IDE's. Is there anything out there that can make Javascript editing less painful in Visual Studio 2008? (We don't have the option of 2010 yet).

• Updated to Android 2.2 and now my apps input-lines don't show well, do I need to update my SDK?

  My Android app has a couple input-lines made to receive numbers, it's a calc app. I just updated my Nexus One to Android 2.2 and now my apps input-lines don't respond like the way they should. When I touch the input-line, the Android keyboard used to pop-up just enough to kind of 'lift' the input-line above the keyboard - into the users view. Then when I scrolled down to the next input-line, that input-line used to 'lift-up' into view also. Now, after I updated my N1 to Android 2.2 - the input-lines are not lifting into view all the way. Also, when I scroll down to the next input-line and type in numbers - they don't appear, but when I scroll left...there they are. It's hard to describe my problem but things have definitely changed in the way my apps input-lines respond since the 2.2 update I did. If I try to update my SDk stuff in Eclipse and then recompile my app, might that fix it? Whenever there's an Android update - developers don't always have to recompile all of their apps do they?

  Hi, When I generate Javadoc for my android project in eclipse, there are lots of warnings like cannot find symbol symbol : class TextView and warning - Tag @see: reference not found: android.app.Dialog I also tried -link http://developer.android.com/reference/ -link http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/ in Extra javadoc options tab in Configure Javadoc Arguments dialog of eclipse-Export Javadoc. But only -link http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/ is working i.e for String class link http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang/String.html?is-external=true is generated. but for android.app.Dialog , no link is generated. Please help !!

• How to add an existing folder to a Visual Studio project?

  I have a web application project made in Visual Studio 2008. Well, I added a jquery folder and added it to source control and other such things. I forgot to add it to the visual studio project though. How do I add the existing folder now? I've tried just creating a new folder and naming it jquery but it gave me a cryptic error "the directory is already on the disk ... if you want to see this directory then check the Show All Files option in the project file" Yet I looked and saw no such option. Is the only way around this to rename jquery to jquery2 and then create a new folder via visual studio named jquery and copy all my files into it?

• android.intent.action.NOTIFICATION_REMOVE not available on all devices?

  I've got a receiver set up in my android application to catch android.intent.action.NOTIFICATION_REMOVE intents. On my Evo, it works fine - when a notification is cleared from the notification bar, I catch that event and can run some code. I tried running this on a Samsung Moment though, and it is never caught. So now I'm trying to figure out why, and I can't seem to find anything on Google about this intent action - and I set this code up a few months ago, so I don't remember where I even found this action, it doesn't seem to be in the API. The evo is running 2.2, and the moment is running 2.1-update1, so I'm guessing that it's undocumented, and only available in 2.2. Is there any other way to catch an event that a notification has been cleared? Note that I'm not trying to cancel a notification that I put up, or trying to cancel another app's notification, just catch an event when a notification has been cleared. • How can I make external script output link to code in Visual Studio?

  I sometimes need to search code for patterns in a way that goes beyond the regex capabilities of Visual Studio (e.g. patterns that depend on what was seen previously in the file or on the contents of other files). So I use Perl to analyze the source and output matching lines, along with the file name and line number. Since this is the exact same format as is produced by the search feature of Visual Studio, I wonder if there is a way to duplicate the functionality where I can double-click on a line and it will display that line in context in Visual Studio. Any ideas?

• How to connect android application running on a device to a local web application?

  I have my droid device connected through USB and using Eclipse for debugging my application running on the device. Everything is fine, except my application needs to connect to a web application running on the same host computer (Windows XP, IE). The web address on the IE was "http://local:4566/MyApp/". I tried to set my android app to "http://10.0.2.2:4566/MyApp", but no luck. The android app's connection simply times out. The document under http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html says that the ip address may be different for devices (see Network Address Space section) but no further details on how to find that. Question is, how to I connect to a local web application running on my host computer (windows xp) from an Android application connected through USB running debug under Eclipse? Unfortunately when examining sources of Android 1.6 I noticed that it's not so easy. Many classes including android.database.; packages use original provider, also many other parts of framework use android.database.sqlite.; packages directly, wich ofcourse make this abstraction a bit confusing and unnesesary. But going to my question. If there is any way that I could extend database interfaces to use custom implmentation of sqlite (or any other database)?

• Possible to change where Android Virtual Devices are saved?

  I've set up the Android SDK and Eclipse on my machine running Windows XP and AVDs (Android Virtual Devices) are saved to "Documents and Settings\user\.android" by default. Is there any way to change this behavior? I have all of the other components saved in a directory on a separate partition and would like everything to be consolidated. Obviously not a huge deal but does anyone here know a workaround for this?

  Android Code Style Guide defines "Android Code Style Rules". To conform to these rules one have to change quite a number of settings of the Java Code Formatter (Window-Preferences-Java-Formatter) default profile (in Eclipse IDE). Did anyone managed to configure the formatter to follow the "Android Code Style Rules" already? PS: I've tried to do this myself but I've found that there are too many formatter options available, and most of them are not mentioned in the Code Style Guide :-(

• Why does Visual Studio 2008 try to open a project from the wrong folder?

  I'm having a bizarre problem with Visual Studio 2008. I wanted to debug one of the libraries that my web application references. Therefore, I decide to add the project containing the library to my solution so that I can debug them together. The project containing my library sits at c:\webLibs\myproj.vbproj. However, when I try to add the project to my solution, Visual Studio throws the following error: "The project file 'c:\someOtherFolder\myproj.vbproj'. has been moved, renamed, or is not on your computer." As you can see, VS appears to be trying to open a different file than the one I clicked on. I used to have the file in that other location, but not anymore. I've tried restarting VS several times. What could cause this bizarre behavior? Why would Visual Studio try to open my project from the wrong folder?

• Building Visual Studio Setup Projects with TFS 2010 Team Build

  One of the most common complaints from people starting to use Team Build is that is doesn’t support building Microsoft’s own Setup and Deployment project (*.vdproj). When creating a default build definition that compiles a solution containing a setup project, you’ll get the following warning: The project file "MyProject.vdproj" is not supported by MSBuild and cannot be built.   This is what the problem is all about. MSBuild, that is used for compiling your projects, does not understand the proprietary vdproj format defined by Microsoft quite some time ago. Unfortunately there is no sign that this will change in the near future, in fact the setup projects has barely changed at all since they were introduced. VS 2010 brings no new features or improvements hen it comes to the setup projects. VS 2010 does include a limited version of InstallShield which promises to be more MSBuild friendly and with more or less the same features as VS setup projects. I hope to get a closer look at this installer project type soon. But, how do we go about to build a Visual Studio setup project and produce an MSI as part of a Team Build process? Well, since only one application known to man understands the vdproj projects, we will have to installa copy of Visual Studio on the build server. Sad but true. After doing this, we use the Visual Studio command line interface (devenv) to perform the build. In this post I will show how to do this by using the InvokeProcess activity directly in a build workflow template. You’ll want to run build your setup projects after you have successfully compiled the projects.   Install Visual Studio 2010 on the build server(s)   Open your build process template /remember to branch or copy the xaml file before modifying it!)   Locate the Try to Compile the Project activity   Drop an instance of the InvokeProcess activity from the toolbox onto the designer, after the Run MSBuild for Project activity   Drop an instance of the WriteBuildMessage activity inside the Handle Standard Output section. Set the Importance property to Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Client.BuildMessageImportance.High (NB: This is necessary if you want the output from devenv to show up in the build log when running the build with the default verbosity) Set the Message property to stdOutput   Drop an instance of the WriteBuildError activity to the Handle Error Output section Set the Message property to errOutput   Select the InvokeProcess activity and set the values of the parameters to:     The finished workflow should look like this:     This will generate the MSI files, but they won’t be copied to the drop location. This is because we are using devenv and not MSBuild, so we have to do this explicitly   Drop a Sequence activity somewhere after the Copy to Drop location activity.   Create a variable in the Sequence activity of type IEnumerable<String> and call it GeneratedInstallers   Drop a FindMatchingFiles activity in the sequence activity and set the properties to:     Drop a ForEach<String> activity after the FindMatchingFiles activity. Set the Value property to GeneratedInstallers   Drop an InvokeProcess activity inside the ForEach activity.  FileName: “xcopy.exe” Arguments: String.Format("""{0}"" ""{1}""", item, BuildDetail.DropLocation) The Sequence activity should look like this:     Save the build process template and check it in.   Run the build and verify that the MSI’s is built and copied to the drop location.   Note 1: One of the drawback of using devenv like this in a team build is that since all the output from the default compilations is placed in the Binaries folder, the outputs is not avaialable when devenv is invoked, which causes the whole solution to rebuild again. In TFS 2008, this was pretty simple to fix by using the CustomizableOutDir property. In TFS 2010, the same feature is not avaialble. • How to associate newly created SurfaceHolder to MediaPlayer

  In my code, I want to be able to temporarily hide (and subsequently show) a video. I am using a SurfaceView + MediaPlayer combination instead of the VideoView due to requirements. However, I am facing difficulties in getting video playback to occur as expected after I show the SurfaceView. My code excerpts includes the following: public void show() { if (mSurface != null) mSurface.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); } public void hide() { if (mSurface != null) { if (isInPlaybackState()) pause(); mSurface.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE); } } @Override public void surfaceCreated(final SurfaceHolder holder) { mHolder = holder; openVideo(); } @Override public void surfaceDestroyed(final SurfaceHolder holder) { // After this, the surface can't be used again mHolder = null; } private void openVideo() { if (mAssetPath == null || !mAssetPath.isEmpty() || mHolder == null) { // Not ready yet; try again later return; } // Pause music playback service Intent i = new Intent("com.android.music.musicservicecommand"); i.putExtra("command", "pause"); getActivity().sendBroadcast(i); if (mPlayer == null) { initializePlayer(); } else { mPlayer.setDisplay(mHolder); } } Based on the above, when I call hide(), surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder) gets triggered. When I later call show(), surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder) gets triggered, which will call openVideo() and associate the player with the newly provided SurfaceHolder.
