• Ubuntu hardware compatability

  I have only previously played with ubuntu using virtual machines with VMware Fusion. So everything just sort of worked. I've never had to install any drivers. I'm considering putting it on some real hardware and using it as a media center. What should I be looking for as far as checking hardware compatibility? How does installing drivers work? Any quick and easy recommendations / guides?

  While doing a kernel backup of an mtd (Memory Technology Device) from /dev/mtd/mtd3ro of a TI board gives many "BCH decoding failed", Here are system info #cat /proc/mtd dev: size erasesize name mtd0: 00080000 00020000 "X-Loader" mtd1: 00140000 00020000 "U-Boot" mtd2: 000c0000 00020000 "U-Boot Env" mtd3: 00500000 00020000 "Kernel" mtd4: 1f880000 00020000 "File System" here is the method used, dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd3ro of=/data/local/tmp/mtd3.bin doing a cat also returns the same error, and here is the error, BCH decoding failed BCH decoding failed yes, the destination has enough space ;) tell me what do you think? • Symbol LL500 Scanner Interface Not Detected

  I have an old Symbol LL500 scanner interface box and a scanner to go with it. The box's original cable used one of the old microsoft mouse connectors, but I got a converter to USB. The problem is that when I connect it to my MacBook, the interface powers up and works, but the computer dosen't recognize it or even say that a device is connected. Is there any way to make it see that the interface is there or am I just screwed?

• Networking Mac OS X 10.6 and Vista via ethernet?

  How can I make Vista home premium access OS X hard drive? and the other way around? I'd like to transfer files via direct ethernet. Plugging in an ethernet cable makes both computers recognize a network, but not the other device. Each firewall is turned off, but no luck. Edit: I don't see Windows Sharing in the Service Column.

• How to mount LUKS partition securely on server

  I'm curious if it is possible to mount a partition encrypted by cryptsetup with LUKS securely and automatically on Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS. For example, if I use the key for the encrypted partition, than that key has to be presented on a device that is not encrypted and if someone steals my disk they'll be able to find the key and decrypt the partition. Is there any safe way to mount an encrypted partition? If not, does anything exist to do what I want?

  I'm trying to add a second SSD to a Centos 6 system. But I get the Error 5 partition table invalid or corrupt at boot. The system already has a single SSD (sdb) and a pair of HDDs (sd{a,c}) in a RAID 1 array from where it boots. It is as if the new SSD assumes one of the devices of the RAID array. Is it?   Is there a way I can get this behavior on Mac OS? alt + right-click-drag will resize the window, relative to where you've clicked within the window and the window's center alt + left-click-drag will move the window, regardless of where you've clicked within the window. • Annoying sound from microphone in headphone

  I recently bought a Plantronics bluetooth headset for VOIP in Skype. But I am facing an annoying problem. The microphone is really sensitive and I could hear all the background noises and my sound though the headphone (of blutooth headset). I tried to disable the bluetooth headset in Playback devices and I could hear the amplified background noise through speakers! I checked if there is a microphone boost option enabled, but couldn't find it in the properties of the headset recording device

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) with grub 1.99. I installed on a RAID10 multidevice BTRFS partition. I thought that multidevice support is included in grub for a while but on boot I'm dropped to a initramfs shell, because it fails to mount root ("invalid argument"). This is actually the same message I get if I want to mount a btrfs volume without executing btrfs device scan. Therefore I wonder: Does Ubuntu's grub version even support boot from btrfs mutlidevice ?

  I'm trying to use an old parallel-port based printer with a USB-to-parallel port adapter on Windows 7. When I plug it into the USB port on the computer it's listed as an unrecognized device. I know that these cables typically use the "USB Printing Support" driver with makes USB ports show up as printer ports in the printer dialog. Is there a way to manually add USB Printing Support to Windows 7, since it isn't being added automatically?

• unable to mount disks in usb dvd drive

  I have 2 USB DVD drives. One that I borrowed from work which I have been testing with which works fine for me, which is why I brought one of myself. When I try and mount my new dvd drive this happens: [18:06:45][arcath@londinium][~] sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/dvd/ mount: special device /dev/sr0 does not exist /dev/sr0 is only in the list when the drive is attached and it works on other machines using the same cables so it must be something with my server.
