• Any experience with SATA SAS Interposer Cards?

  Driven by the current price difference between SATA and SAS disks on one side and the potentially bad behaviour of SATA disks in bigger storage arrays on the other side, I have found so-called SATA-to-SAS interposer cards. Advertised as "seamlessly adding SAS capabilities to existing SATA disk drives", I wonder if anyone here has had some experience with these or similar products. The major benefits I can identify are the increased cable voltage (if all drives are SAS connected), the ability to power-cycle the drive and multipath (if desired). Obviously the SATA drive will still have to be RAID edition. The question is: Do these cards indeed increase the overall reliability of a storage system, or will failing SATA disks cause trouble nevertheless? Edit: I'm not asking for hypothetical answers, only actual experience please. I'm well aware that the typical 10k SAS drive is more reliable (and better performing) than 7200 SATA drives. But how does a nearline SAS, which is phyiscally the same disk as its SATA counterpart, compare to the SATA version with interposer?

• Show a DB as a directory (Like Sharepoint Does)

  Hi, My team and I are programming a sort of Document Manager and the idea is to store them completely on DB. Is there a protocol or Extensions that allows us to show a "Virtual Directory" or files that are really non existent (only in DB). How does Sharepoint do this? I understand that Sharepoint uses WebDav but it implies that the files do exist physically somewhere. We intend to develop this application on .NET 4.0 and deploy it on IIS. Any suggestions? • Can I run Linux on the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless, with a built-in 3G modem, and connect using the built in modem?

  I apologize if my question made little sense, I am very tired at the moment. Anyway, Recently I purchases the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless. It runs on the Intel Atom processor and came with Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is quite possibly the worst and most restrictive OS I have ever used. I plan on installing CRUX, after doing a little research on minimal, free, Linux operating systems, as I am working on web programming using Python, among other things. My only worry is that, because my HP Mini uses a built in wireless card (and I have no wifi connection, only a 3G connection) that has a "mobile access" connection to Verizon wireless, I am not sure if after installing CRUX that I would still be able to connect using this option. I have never used Linux before, and am hoping this will work. So if anybody has experience with this...please answer, can I connect to vzw 3G with linux, using an internal mobile access card...

  I'm considering getting a Mini for web programming. I do a lot of text searches so I want to put a SSD in it. Does the Mini have any limitations that might effect the performance of a SSD? I'm trying to decide if I should get a Mini Server. I'd like to be able to have two internal drives so one can be SSD for OS and the code I'm working on, and the other can be my storage drive. However, I'm not sure if I'll be using the extra functionality of the server edition OSX or not, so I'm reluctant to pay the $200 premium. In a "regular" Mini I could put the SSD internal and use an external big drive, but would the external drive be fast enough via Firewire? Thanks in advance for any info.

• Network? or router? problem

  I have two computers networked through a Netgear WG914 router which is connected to an Ipstar satellite modem via the RG47 LAN connector. The main computer is running Windows 7 Pro 64bit and the secondary computer is running Windows 7 Home Edition 32bit. On occasion there is a loss of internet connection usually on the main computer, often followed by a loss on the secondary comuter. Not, however, always the case. Windows troubleshooter, naturally, is about as much use as a politician in government.......NONE. There appears to be no problem with the ISP bad as it is and often the connection will be remade without any help from me. The difference in the OS's is not of any relevance since I had this problem before I changed over to Windows 7. Not being a nerd when it comes to networking I wonder if anyone has any constructive suggestions.

• Windows 2008 Server SP2 64bit - TCP Connections never releasing after TIME_WAIT

  Hello fellow admins :) We have an issue with Windows 2008 Datacenter edition SP2 64bit. We have a process that is polling very frequently and establishing new TCP connections. The system gets in a state where we end up with over 16k connections in TIME_WAIT state. The default OS timeout is 120 seconds after which these connections should go away, but that never happens. These connections persist and never get cleaned up even after the originating process has long terminated (we are still at 16k connections two days after the process was killed). The OS is supposed to time them out but it doesn't. Has anyone else seen this behavior and if so what was done to resolve it. We are aware of how to tune the tcp stack to make the timeout shorter or allow more connections but this is not the issue here. Thanks!

• How does one go about fixing a pixelation issue?

  I've been having a lot of trouble with pixelation and also in-game display driver crashes. At first I thought the problem may have been my graphics card (Sapphire 5750) but I have RMA'd it three times and I'm still having trouble. So what I think it might be is my PSU, its 650Watt but its made by Azza so it was cheap and not made by a necessarily good company. Or maybe it could be the CPU (AMD Phenom Black Edition 3.4Ghz) It runs hot (60C) but it passes Everest's test. Someone told me it could be the memory (8GB DDR3) but I don't really see how RAM has anything to do with my problem. So what are some of you suggestions? • PC cannot see Clonezilla server when using PXE Boot

  Hi I have about 15 workstations, all have the same hardware specs so I figured clonezilla is perfect for cloning them. So I followed everything this guide says :cloning groups of school computers That guide above makes it all look easy but when I tried setting up Clonezilla Server Edition on my laptop (Kubuntu 10.10) and configured the master computer for PXE boot, the master computer could not see the Clonezilla server. It just shows 'DHCP...' which seems it trying to grab an IP address but to no avail. Please help. Thanks!

• I can't get my Android program to run correctly on an AVM in Eclipse

I have followed all the tutorials on the developer site for installing Eclipse, the SDK and the ADT plugin. When trying to run a simple Hello World program, everything seems to compile correctly, but then the virtual machine comes up empty. • Ethernet port sleeping on PS3 running linux

  My lab has a PS3 running Ubuntu Linux 9.04 Server Edition. After a period of a few hours with no use, the Ethernet connection (eth0) seems to go to sleep, causing the connection to be lost. Pinging or trying to SSH into the machine results in no response. The fix I've been using is to access the machine locally and restart it (trying to bring eth0 down then up doesn't seem to correct it). I've tried setting up an hourly cron job that runs on the PS3 and pings another machine just to create network activity, but this doesn't seem to solve the problem either. Update: The solution was to run the above cron job much more frequently: every 10 minutes works.

A vmware workstation vm running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition server in my laptop w/o internet connectivity Some of my peers' machines connected to internet I want to create a VPN with these machines, provided the VM will not have any direct internet connection and my peers should able to connect to the SVN server application running on this Win2003 server VM. Can anybody please suggest me how to setup this network, what software I need to install in both physical machine and vm, what kind of network connectivity should be there between vmware guest and host machine? EDIT: I deliberately don't want to connect the VM with internet. The host will work more of a gateway of the VPN connection for the VM.

• Is it possible to use a static IP assigned by my ISP for an offsite web server on a VPS (different ISP)?

  I have a web server on a Virtual Private Server with a hosting provider. Unfortunately, they are really stingy with IP addresses and I need to run several SSL certificates on my server, so I will need a few more than I have. I have a block of 5 static IP addresses on a business package through a different ISP and I am only using 1 of them for connectivity in the office. What I am wondering is if it is possible to use the 4 unused static IP addresses from this ISP on my VPS, which is hosted by another ISP? The VPS (web server) is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Edition. If this can be done, please let me know how to configure it.

• Folder cannot be deleted

  I am using Windows XP Home Edition. When I try to delete a folder I have named cygwin. When I try to delete it or any file or folder within it, there is a long pause, and then an error pops up, saying: Cannot delete Cygwin: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or read-write protected and that the file is not currently in use. I have tried deleting the folder and the files it contains with FileAssassin, and unlocking it with LockHunter. Neither report any errors unless I try to have them delete the file or folder, then I get an error message saying Access Denied. I have rebooted into Safe Mode to change the ownership, but I get Access Denied when I click OK or Apply. How can I delete this folder?

• Hard Drive upgrade advice for a Dell PowerEdge 1950

  My setup is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with 2x 140Gb Hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. The OS is Windows 2003 Web Edition and disk is partitioned into to two, a 12Gb C: partition and the remainder is the D: drive. Both are very close to full capacity. Ideally I want to replace those drives with 2x 1Tb drives while retaining all data. First of all is this possible without rebuilding the server?   I know that it's possible in Excel to toggle between displaying values and displaying formulas. I'm required to turn in assignments for a statistics class as a printed Excel sheet showing both the formula and the result. Right now the instructor makes us either copy the formula and paste it as text next to the computed value, or copy the value and paste it next to the formula. This is very inefficient, prone to error (if you change the formula or values after doing the copy-paste), and generally a waste of time. Is there any way to have Excel show the formula and its value in the same cell? If not, is there any function which will display the formula from a referenced cell as plain text, e.g. =showformula(A1) which would print out =sum(A2:A5) instead of 25 (if those were the formula and value of cell A1)? I'm using Excel 2010, but a general answer that works for any recent edition of Excel would be nice.
