  • Problems setting NTP sever with w32tm for a DC that is a Hyper-V guest

    Hello ! I have tried to sett my DC to get its time from several NTP severs. I follow this answer (http://serverfault.com/questions/24298/w32time-sync-problems-for-hyper-v-guests-w32time-event-ids-38-24-29-35/24299#24299) to do it. First I disable Time Synchronization in the Hyper-V Integration Services for each guest. Then restart the Windows Time serviceon the guest. I had before this used this command: w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntp.uio.no;timekeeper. uio.no;nissen.uio.no;0.no.pool.ntp.org;1.no.pool.ntp.org;2.no.pool.ntp.org" /syn cfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update And the cmd sad: The command completed successfully. But the time was still 10 min wrong... I run w32tm again after restarted the DC without it having any effect.   • syspolicy_purge_history generates failed logins

    I have a development server with 3 instances: Default, A and B. It is a physical server, non clustered. Whenever the syspolicy_purge_history job runs at 2 am, I get failed login alerts. Looking at the job steps, all are successfully completed. It appears that some point during the step "Erase Phantom System Health Records" is when the failed logins occur. syspolicy_purge_history on instance B works OK. syspolicy_purge_history on the Default instance seems to want to connect to instance B, resulting in: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-B'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . No errors are reported by Powershell. syspolicy_purge_history on the A instance seems to want to connect to the Default instance resulting in Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-Default'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . Then it tries to connect to the B instance, resulting in Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-B'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . No errors are reported by Powershell. I tried the steps posted here hoping they would fix it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955726 But again, this is not a virtual server nor is it in a cluster. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

  • MultiView 2000 terminal emulator not printing correctly to Generic/Text Printer on Windows 7

    Guys & gals, Hope someone can shed some light on this. I am downloading reports from an AIX-based system by directing them to a TT printer which the terminal emulator (MultiView 2000) intercepts and directs to the default printer on the local system. This local printer is configured as a vanilla Generic/Text printer attached to a FILE port. When I print from AIX, the output is spooled down and the local printer prompts for a file name into which to save the file...but not under Windows 7. This has worked fine for many years, on both Win2K and WinXP. However, on Windows 7 the output gets spooled as a file into spool\PRINTERS (and looks as expected) but the print job then hangs with a status of "Error - Printing" and never prompts for a file name. I have to cancel the job. The Generic/Text printer works as expected with other applications. I have tried setting the printer to print directly rather than spooling but this only serves to hang the terminal session too. I've also tried to run the emulator in Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode and as Administrator in case it was something like that but with no luck. As you might expect, it does work fine in XP Mode (as long as I print to a printer defined therein and not the host's printer) but operationally this isn't going to be an option. Obviously this emulation software is a decade old (at least) and I could just cross/upgrade all the users (at a cost) but, before I do so, has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before and found some sort of fix?     I am trying to allow inbound unsolicited ICMPv6 requests from an external link-local address to my outside (external) interfaces link-local address. I can ping (echo-request) the external address and receive a pong (echo-reply) but ICMPv6 messages initiated on the far side are dropped. I am running 9.0(1) in order to use some of the newer features. Does the Cisco ASA not allow unsolicited inbound requests from a link-local address? Should it matter if all ICMPv6 is allowed?     Hi I'm trying to get RDP services running with Windows 2008 R2. I'm at a WINXP SP3 client that was modified to run RDP with NLA. When I start the client connect to the local DC and get an authentification error (Code 0x507). I've already done the following: • Server Setup to run as a standalone local "DC" to provide Terminal services to a single application. Remote Desktop Session Host CAL License is running & operational, RD Gateway Manager w/ Local Server RAP & CAP running NLA & operational etc..... Server has NLA & temporary use of port 3389 (which is directly connected to and accessible from the internet (I am planning to change the port to 443, but want to get the current system running first). • XP Client(s): RDP-Version on win xp clients is 6.1 If had SP2, then added SP3 and edited the registry settings to allow NLA, by: Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa In the details pane, right-click Security Packages, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type tspkg. Leave any data that is specific to other SSPs, and then click OK. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders In the details pane, right-click SecurityProviders, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type credssp.dll. Leave any data that is specific to other SSPs, and then click OK. Exit Registry Editor. Restart the computer.

  • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

    Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process.   • Can't get my OpenVpn client to connect

    Hi Guys, I am trying to setup a test vpn between my home desktop and my laptop. So far I have got the server on the desktop to connect fine but I can not get my laptop to finish the connection. I have tried several different configurations and they all give me the same result. Obviously it has nothing to do with my Client configuration but possibly something on my laptop?   • Getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN

    I'm having issues getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN. The server setup consists of a security device (DrayTek V3300) which passes the PPTP authentication to a SBS2003 server running RRAS. The server is the DC and provides DNS and WINS, the single NIC's name server is set to the NIC's IP (192.168...), and DHCP on the DrayTek sets the server IP as the DNS. If I create a new VPN connection in Win7, leaving everything as default apart from the server, username, password and domain, I can: ping everything by IP address resolve IPs with nslookup using their fully-qualified name, as in nslookup fileserver.mydomain.local ping machines by fully-qualified name, as in ping fileserver.mydomain.local However if I try to access a file share: within Explorer, I get "Windows cannot access ..." with "Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified Error", using net use z: \\fileserver.mydomain.local\share, I get "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found." If I add the machine name to my HOSTS file I can use the file share, which is my last-ditch workaround, but I have a number of VPN users and would rather a solution that doesn't involve me trying to hand-edit system files on computers half a country away. If I set the WINS server explicitly in the connection's IPv4 settings I don't have to use the FQN to ping the machine, but that doesn't change anything else. EDIT: The PC I'm having the issue on is running Win 7 Home Premium. After more testing I actually have two other PCs that work, one W7HP, one XP Home, and another Vista PC that doesn't work (not tested as much as the others), all four on the same internet connection (behind the same router). All of them were tested with a straight-forward, all defaults, new VPN configuration.

  • Exchange 2003: Fresh install, couple noob questions.

    Hi All, Thanks for reading! I have a small network set up for a local office here, and have a fresh install of Exchange 2003 on our sole-server PDC. The network uses one domain, call it ourdomain.net, which is DNSed locally, but not DNSed for the actual domain, so ourdomain.net works from within the network, but from outside, it's just pointed to some domain parking. I have a completely different domain, call it emaildomain.com, which is currently setup for our website and email, which is hosted with a standard hosting company. We've been using a combination of Thunderbird and Outlook (with local .pst files) for email. I've been asked to setup Exchange to work with our email, but am not familiar with it. The install seems to have gone just fine. The question is: How do I get email from a domain outside our network to work with the exchange server? Do I need to move the email for that domain to point to our local server (I so hope not!), or can I just set exchange so somehow slurp mail from the existing mailboxes on our host for that domain's mail? Or are there better ideas I don't know to ask for? Any help very appreciated - thanks!

    We recently updated our SQL 2008 server to use SP 2 and its causing a few headaches. We use SSRS on this server and when a client tries to print a report by the built-in print function, we're needing to download the RsClientPrint ActiveX control from the server from the client gets the following error Unable to load client print control. We have about 700 computers that are needing this fixed and I've followed the instructions found on the following URL: http://www.kodyaz.com/articles/client-side-printing-silent-deployment-of-rsclientPrint.aspx We have two issues: Most of the users who will be using this ActiveX control are not local administrators so they will not be able to install the control themselves Since there are so many computers, this has to be done silently behind the scenes run by a local admin account After following the information from the link above, we're able to put the files in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and register the DLL but we still get the same problem. The only small thing I've noticed is that in the HTML for the report page, everything that references a version is referencing version 2007.100.4000.00 and the version of the DLL that I pulled from the report server is 2007.100.1600.22. Also, for some clients that are local administrators, they are prompted every time to install the ActiveX control when they click print. This works successfully but we can't have the user asked if they want to install the same control every time they need to print.

    I am trying to forward web traffic from a remote server to my local machine in order to test out some API integration (tropo, paypal, etc). Basically, I'm trying to setup something similar to what tunnlr.com provides. I've initiated the ssh tunnel with the command $ssh –nNT –R :7777:localhost:5000 user@server Then I can see that server has is now listening on port 7777 with user@server:$netstat -ant | grep 7777 tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:7777 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 ::1:7777 :::* LISTEN $user@server:curl localhost:7777 Hello from local machine So that works fine. The curl request is actually served from the local machine. Now, how do I enable server.com:8888 to be routed through that tunnel?   • Cisco 891w multiple VLAN configuration

    I'm having trouble getting my guest network up. I have VLAN 1 that contains all our network resources (servers, desktops, printers, etc). I have the wireless configured to use VLAN1 but authenticate with wpa2 enterprise. The guest network I just wanted to be open or configured with a simple WPA2 personal password on it's own VLAN2. I've looked at tons of documentation and it should be working but I can't even authenticate on the guest network! I've posted this on cisco's support forum a week ago but no one has really responded. I have updated my Linksys router with TomatoVPN and used the following config: Interface Type:TAP Protocol:UDP Port:1195 Firewall Custom Authorization Mode:Static Key I have then inserted the static key generated in OpenVPN saved and started the service. connect.ovpn. # Use the following to have your client computer send all traffic through your router # (remote gateway) remote (entered my DNS/DHCP servers external IP address here) port 1195 dev tap secret static.key.txt proto udp comp-lzo route-gateway 192.168.1.1 redirect-gateway float I've then placed my static key in a file in the same directory as your connect.ovpn (static.key.txt) Now OpenVPN is installed on a laptop that I use at home. I have plugged in the laptop to my home connection and started connect.ovpn The Local Area Connection is connected as 'Home Network 3' - and when I start OpenVPN it is connected as 'Local Area Connection 2' and this is showing as 'Unidentified Network' and it appears there is no network access. TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 appears to be the adaptors name and the IP and DNS properties are set to automatic. If I open up the OpenVPN GUI it shows an error message saying "Connecting to connect has failed". Looking at the error message behind this pop-up one line says "TCP/UDP Socket bind failed on local address [undef]:1195 Address already in use [WSAEADDRINUSE] Could anyone possibly help me further with this please?

    I have a strange problem with Internet Connection Sharing on a laptop running Vista Business. This laptop is connected to the internet via the ethernet port, which goes to an ADSL modem. it is automatically assigned the IP address 192.168.1.50, and the modem/gateway is 192.168.1.1 My friends laptop is running Vista Home. Previously, I would create an ad hoc wireless network, enable ICS, and everything would be perfect. My friend would have internet access via this. However, something has now mysteriously broken. If I enable ICS on the wireless connection, it resets my Local Area Connection, assigning it the manual IP address of 192.168.0.1, which means my connection to the internet is destroyed. Both wireless adapters on each network are assigned auto configuration addresses, in the 168. range. They can see each other fine, but my friends laptop cannot access the internet via mine, even after I have restored the Local Area Connection settings. I understand the computer with ICS enabled must have the IP of 192.168.0.1, but previously, before whatever went wrong, my wireless adapter would be 192.168.0.1 and my friends computer would get an IP via DHCP. I have also tried setting static IP address and making a bridge, none of which works. How can I fix this problem, and prevent enabling ICS from touching my Local Area Connection? Both machines have no firewall, have appropriate settings etc...

  • How to restore infrared support in Windows XP?

    My infrared port is not working on my Windows XP SP 3 (Thinkpad X60). I can see it Device Manager, and it's status is, that it is working probably. The problem manifests in several ways. Originally I was trying to transfer data from my Polar RS800CX watch, and the Polar ProTrainer 5 software gave me the this error message: "Communication port couldn't be opened". Then I tried to connect the watch to another computer, and the infrared connection was established immediately. I then tried to connect the other computer to my Thinkpad X60. The other computer again immediately showed the Wireless Link icon "'computername' is in range" in the notification area. But nothing is shown on the Thinkpad, and a file transfer to the Thinkpad is unsuccessful with an error message that reports that "the target machine actively refused it [the connection]". This brings me to conclude that the infrared support in Windows on the Thinkpad is somehow broken. This is further supported by the fact that I can't find the "Wireless Link" icon in the Control Panel and when I try to run the irprops.cpl nothing happens. So the question is, how to reinstall the infrared support? Some of the solutions that I have explored is: I have tried to disable/enable the infrared in the BIOS - to trick a re-installation. The IR modules settings on the other computer that can get a successful IR connection is an exact match to the ThinkPad that can't get a connection. The was a problem in Windows XP SP 2 with the Wireless Link icon - MS KB article - but that hotfix can't be applied on SP 3 installation. I also guess that the hotfix is included in SP 3. Any other suggestions?

  • Setting Ubuntu Global PATH for Ruby Enterprise Edition

    Context: I recently installed Ruby Enterprise Edition (REE) on an Ubuntu 8.04 server. I would like for this new version of Ruby to globally supersede (for all users, crontabs, etc) the older version in /usr/local/bin. Attempted Solution #1: The REE documentation recommends placing the REE bin folder at the beginning of the global PATH in /etc/environment. I altered the PATH line in this file to read: PATH="/opt/ruby_ee/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games" This did affect my PATH at all. Attempted Solution #2: Next I followed these instructions and updated the PATH setting in the /etc/login.defs and /etc/crontab files. (I did not change /etc/sudoers.) This didn't affect my PATH either, even after logging out and rebooting the server. Other information: I seem to be having the same problem described here. I'm testing using the command: echo $PATH My shell is bash. My .bashrc doesn't not alter my PATH. I'm ssh'ed into the system for all testing. /opt/ruby_ee/ is a sym-link to /opt/ruby-enterprise-1.8.7-2011.03/

    I am using Hylafax 6.0.5 on Fedora 13 x86_64. As there are no rpm package available for Fedora 13, I use the source tar ball to install hylafax myself. Everything seems fine during compile and install.
