  • Cannot update Eclipse due to conflicting dependencies

    I installed Eclipse via the Ubuntu repos (I'm on Ubuntu 11.10). Then I added the Indigo repo (http://download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo/) as only Helios repos were listed as part of the default install. If I go to HelpCheck for Updates then a number of updates are listed for install, however when I click Next I get the following error: Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency. Here’s a rundown of the session: Bank of America, TALX, and St. Jude Medical all have users communities that expect systems to be available around the clock. In this customer panel session, Bank of America discusses how it will be leveraging Oracle GoldenGate. St. Jude Medical shares how it is using Oracle GoldenGate to achieve a zero-downtime migration for a 5 TB Oracle online transaction processing (OLTP) 24/7 mission-critical database. TALX discusses how Equifax Workforce Information Services used Oracle GoldenGate to move from processing online transactions in a single site to processing concurrently from two geographically disparate data centers, providing a highly available solution with significant burst capacity. On Tuesday at 11:45 in Moscone West 3005 we switch gears and host a customer panel on Operational Reporting. The theme of this customer panel is all around reporting and how Oracle GoldenGate raises the bar on reporting by enabling real-time access to real-time data. Here’s a rundown of the session: Turk Telekom and Comcast are half a world away from each other, but these two powerhouse companies have both drastically improved performance and access to real-time data by using Oracle GoldenGate.   • Stand-Up Desk 2012 Update

    One of the more popular topics here on my technical blog doesn't have to do with technology, per-se - it's about the choice I made to go to a stand-up desk work environment. If you're interested in the history of those, check here: Stand-Up Desk Part One Stand-Up Desk Part Two I have made some changes and I was asked to post those here.Yes, I'm still standing - I think the experiment has worked well, so I'm continuing to work this way. I've become so used to it that I notice when I sit for a long time. If I'm flying, or driving a long way, or have long meetings, I take breaks to stand up and move around. That being said, I don't stand as much as I did. I started out by standing the entire day - which did not end well. As you can read in my second post, I found that sitting down for a few minutes each hour worked out much better. And over time I would say that I now stand about 70-80% of the day, depending on the day. Some days I don't even notice I'm standing, so I don't sit as often. Other days I find that I really tire quickly - so I sit more often. But in both cases, I stand more than I sit. In the first post you can read about how I used a simple coffee-table from Ikea to elevate my desktop to the right height. I then adjusted the height where I stand by using a small plastic square and some carpet. Over time I found this did not work as well as I'd like. The primary reason is that the front of these are at the same depth - so my knees would hit the desk or table when I sat down. Also, the desk was at a certain height, and I had to adjust, rather than the other way around.  Also, I like a lot of surface area on top of a desk - almost more of a table. Routing cables and wiring was a pain, and of course moving it was out of the question.   So I've changed what I use. I found a perfect solution for what I was looking for - industrial wire shelving: I bought one, built only half of it (for the right height I wanted) and arranged the shelves the way I wanted. I then got a 5'x4' piece of wood from Lowes, and mounted it to where the top was balanced, but had an over-hang  I could get my knees under easily.My wife sewed a piece of fake-leather for the top. This arrangement provides the following benefits: Very strong Rolls easily, wheels can lock to prevent rolling Long, wide shelves Wire-frame allows me to route any kind of wiring and other things all over the desk I plugged in my UPS and ran it's longer power-cable to the wall outlet. I then ran the router's LAN connection along that wire, and covered both with a large insulation sleeve. I then plugged in everything to the UPS, and routed all the wiring. I can now roll the desk almost anywhere in the room so that I can record, look out the window, get closer to or farther away from the door and more. I put a few boxes on the shelves as "drawers" and tidied that part up. Even my printer fits on a shelf. Laser-dog not included - some assembly required In the second post you can read about the bar-stool I purchased from Target for the desk. I cheaped-out on this one, and it proved to be a bad choice. Because I had to raise it so high, and was constantly sitting on it and then standing up, the gas-cylinder in it just gave out. So it became a very short stool that I ended up getting rid of. In the end, this one from Ikea proved to be a better choice: And so this arrangement is working out perfectly. I'm finding myself VERY productive this way. I hope these posts help you if you decide to try working at a stand-up desk. Although I was skeptical at first, I've found it to be a very healthy, easy way to code, design and especially present over a web-cam. It's natural to stand to speak when you're presenting, and it feels more energetic than sitting down to talk to others.

  • Update to kernel 3.12 seems to fail: uname reports old rc7

    I currently run Xubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.12 rc7. Today I tried updating to the latest 3.12 kernel (non-rc), but this seems to fail. When installing the image and headers I see the following error passing by: ... run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.12.0-031200-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.12.0-031200-generichis Error! The dkms.conf for this module includes a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE directive which does not match this kernel/arch. This indicates that it should not be built. ... After rebooting, when I do uname -r or cat /proc/version it tells me that I'm still running on the old rc7 kernel. Since my microphone wasn't working on my Sony Vaio Pro 13 I did download and install the latest ALSA drivers using the oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms package which seem to fix the problem (with the mic). Maybe this has something to do with it? I also tried removing the package using sudo apt-get purge oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms but no success.

  • Postgres update rule returning number of rows affected

    I have a view table which is a union of two seperate tables (say Table _A and Table _B). I need to be able to update a row in the view table, and it seems the way to do this was through a 'view rule'. All entries in the view table have seperate id's, so an id that exists in table _A won't exist in table _B. I created the following rule: CREATE OR REPLACE RULE view_update AS ON UPDATE TO viewtable DO INSTEAD ( UPDATE _A SET foo = false WHERE old.id = _A.id; UPDATE _B SET foo = false WHERE old.id = _B.id; ); If I do an update on table _B it returns the correct number of rows affected (1). However if I update table _A it returns (0) rows affected even though the data was changed. If I swap out the order of the updates then the same thing happens, but in reverse. How can I solve this problem so that it returns the correct number of rows affected. Thanks.

I need it to generate a list of members with checkbox [done] Add an option for it [done] What i don't know how to do is to update, to say, give all the selected users the selected power. Then i went searching for something and found most of them uses array to do this, but i never found one that actually explains how it works.   • How to get hibernate3-maven-plugin hbm2ddl to find JDBC driver?

    I have a Java project I am building with Maven. I am now trying to get the hibernate3-maven-plugin to run the hbm2ddl tool to generate a schema.sql file I can use to create the database schema from my annotated domain classes. This is a JPA application that uses Hibernate as the provider. In my persistence.xml file I call out the mysql driver: <property name="hibernate.dialect" value="org.hibernate.dialect.MySQLDialect"/> <property name="hibernate.connection.driver_class" value="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"/> When I run Maven, I see it processing all my classes, but when it goes to output the schema, I get the following error: ERROR org.hibernate.connection.DriverManagerConnectionProvider - JDBC Driver class not found: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver I have the MySQL driver as a dependency of this module. However it seems like the hbm2ddl tool cannot find it. I would have guessed that the Maven plugin would have known to search the local Maven file repository for this driver. What gives?   • Can not access Internet (DNS names do not resolve) after update today

    I have been using Precise for a few weeks now for work with no problem. Today, I am not able to access any website using either wired or wireless connections. I installed the updates today which included nautilus, xserver, and a new kernel (3.2.0-24). After restarting I no longer was able to browse the Internet using firefox or chrome. Trying to ping google in terminal gives ping: unknown host google.ca I have tried: Connecting to wireless or wired networks (both working on other machines) Restart the machine and boot with previous Kernel Manually configure opendns on my wired connection Restart the network and the laptop and the wireless card Without any success so far. I am not sure where to go next. Please let me know the cause of the issue or help me troubleshoot it. Note that the laptop does receive an ip address, and it can ping ip address of google.ca (74.125.127.94) but not the domain name, or any domain name for that matter. This system was upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 more two weeks ago.

  • auto-update and email

    I've got several Ubuntu 10.10 servers which should all be set to do automatic security updates. Is there any way I could get them to send me an email when they apply updates (particularly if they fail)? I'm using r-u-on to monitor availability, disk space etc but the security updates are very important and I don't have a good way to monitor them. I could possibly script something myself but I figured it's the kind of thing that's probably been solved many times already.
