• How to perform a non-polymorphic HQL query in Hibernate?

  Hi all, I'm using Hibernate 3.1.1, and in particular, I'm using HQL queries. According to the documentation, Hibernate's queries are polymorphic: A query like: from Cat as cat returns instances not only of Cat, but also of subclasses like DomesticCat. How can I query for instances of Cat, but not of any of its subclasses? I'd like to be able to do it without having to explicitly mention each subclass. I'm aware of the following options, and don't find them satisfactory: Manually filtering the instances after the query, OR: Manually adding a WHERE clause on the discriminator column. It would make sense for Hibernate to allow the user to decide whether a query should be polymorphic or not, but I can't find such an option. Thanks in advance!

• Python: How do I pass a variable by reference?

  The Python documentation seems unclear about whether parameters are passed by reference or value, and the following code produces the unchanged value 'Original' class PassByReference: def __init__(self): self.variable = 'Original' self.Change(self.variable) print self.variable def Change(self, var): var = 'Changed' Is there something I can do to pass the variable by actual reference? Update: I am coming to the conclusion that while Andrea answered my actual question (Can you... No but you can...), on the subject of pass by reference Blair Conrad is more technically correct. As I understand it the crux is that a copy of a reference is being passed. If you assign that copy, as in my example, then you lose the reference to the original and it remains unchanged. If, however, you 'use' that reference, for example append on a passed list, then the original is changed. I will see how the comments and votes go before choosing the answer people think is the best

• Scriptom (groovy) leaves Excel process running - am I doing something wrong?

  I am using the Scriptom extension to Groovy 1.7.0 to automate some processing using Excel 2007 under Windows XP. This always seems to leave an Excel process running despite my calling quit on the excel activeX object. (There is a passing reference to this phenomenon in the Scriptom example documentation too.) Code looks like: import org.codehaus.groovy.scriptom.ActiveXObject; def xls = new ActiveXObject("Excel.Application") xls.Visible = true // do xls stuff xls.Quit() The visible excel window does disappear but an EXCEL process is left in the task manager (and more processes pile up with each run of the script). There are no error message or exceptions. Can anyone explain why the Excel process is left behind and is there any way to prevent it from happening?

• YUI Autocomplete: search after pasting?

  I'm using an auto-complete widget from YUI to implement live search as in the examples. However, it works fine when search text is typed in, but fails to work when the text is pasted into the field. Which would be the proper way to initiate an autocompletion on paste? Haven't found anything for that in the documentation... EDIT: Pasting is not Ctrl-V, it's usually "Paste" from the context-menu. YUI does react to a keypress, but doesn't if anything is pasted by the mouse.

• Sqlalchemy layout with WSGI application

  I'm working on writing a small WSGI application using Bottle and SqlAlchemy and am confused on how the "layout" of my application should be in terms of SqlAlchemy. My confusion is with creating engines and sessions. My understanding is that I should only create one engine with the 'create_engine' method. Should I be creating an engine instance in the global namespace in some sort of singleton pattern and creating sessions based off of it? How have you done this in your projects? Any insight would be appreciated. The examples in the documentation dont seem to make this entirely clear (unless I'm missing something obvious). Any thoughts?

• iPhone: Setup static content of UITableView

  This guide from apple https://developer.apple.com/iphone/prerelease/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/TableView_iPhone/TableViewCells/TableViewCells.html (you need login) explains how to use "The Technique for Static Row Content" to use Interface Builder to setup the cells in a tableview. I have some cells with different heights in my tableview. Without using the heightForRowAtIndexPath method everything get messed up. Do I still need to use this method or can I in some way setup the height of the cells inside the IB as I created them there? Also when using the "The Technique for Static Row Content" from the guide you still need to use the cellForRowAtIndexPath to setup the cells even if they are created in IB. I would like to setup the full layout of the tableview with all cells in IB (drag the cells right into the tableview), is that possible in some way? Thanks!

But: All these acronyms and different libraries, GEOS, GDAL, PROJ, PCL, Shaply, OpenGEO, OGR, OGC, OWS and what not, each seemingly depending on any number of others, is slightly overwhelming me. Here's what I would like to do: Given a number of points and a linestring, I want to determine the location on the line closest to a certain point. The form display the data correctly and everything is fine what I want to do is to add styling to each field. • Need help using the Windows IP Helper API & ParseNetworString in C#.

  I'm attempting to rewrite some C# web service code that uses the Windows IP Helper API call "SendARP" to retreive a remote system's MAC address. SendARP works great - until you cross a network segment as Arp requests aren't routed. I've been looking at the "ParseNetworkString" documentation after happening across its existance on StackOverflow.   Hi guys, i'm using the jquery cookie plugin. Everything works fine except the fact that I have no idea how to set an expiration-time for the cookie? $.cookie('opt_visible', 'true'); the jquery-cookie documentation says: hoursToLive (DEPRECATED for expiresAt) NUMBER For how many hours should the cookie be valid? (Passing 0 means to delete the cookie at the end of the browser session--this is default. Negative values will delete the cookie, but you should use the del() method instead.) That's exactly what I'd like to have. The cookie should be available as long as i'm browsing the site. As soon as i close the window or browsertab, the cookie should be deleted. How can i implement this hoursToLive thingy to my mentioned line above? Thank you

  As per the documentation link given below: When a lock wait timeout occurs, the current statement is not executed. The current transaction is not rolled back. (Until MySQL 5.0.13 InnoDB rolled back the entire transaction if a lock wait timeout happened. You can restore this behavior by starting the server with the --innodb_rollback_on_timeout option, available as of MySQL 5.0.32. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/innodb-parameters.html#sysvar_innodb_lock_wait_timeout Does it mean that when a lock wait timeout occurs, it compromises the transactional integrity? "roollback on timeout" was the default behaviour till 5.0.13 and I guess that was the correct way to handle such situations. Does anyone think that this should be the default behaviour and the user should not be asked to add a parameter for a functionality that is taken for granted?

• Beginners PHP e-mail problem

  I'm working on my first PHP project, and it's going well. I've been able to figure out how to do most of what I need so far, but there's one big problem for me now: E-mail. I'm on a shared server, so I can't install PEAR, and I can't modify my php.ini. According to my host's very limited documentation, I have to use SMTP so I can't (correct me if I'm wrong) use the mail() function. So does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? At this point I just want to send a basic text message, so where would I specify my SMTP port number, user, password and so on? Thanks

• Google Web Optimizer -- How long until winning combination?

  I've had an A/B Test running in Google Web Optimizer for six weeks now, and there's still no end in sight. Google is still saying: "We have not gathered enough data yet to show any significant results. When we collect more data we should be able to show you a winning combination." Is there any way of telling how close Google is to making up its mind? (Does anyone know what algorithm does it use to decide if there's been any "high confidence winners"?) According to the Google help documentation: Sometimes we simply need more data to be able to reach a level of high confidence. A tested combination typically needs around 200 conversions for us to judge its performance with certainty. But all of our conversions have over 200 conversations at the moment: 230 / 4061 (Original) 223 / 3937 (Variation 1) 205 / 3984 (Variation 2) 205 / 4007 (Variation 3) How much longer is it going to have to run?? • Coldfusion 9 Inter portlet communication?

  I am having a hard time trying to find documentation at achieving IPC using Coldfusion 9 portlets under JBOSS. Does anyone have any good references I can take a look at? Or maybe some example code that I can go off of? So far I've been successful in getting my portlets working under Liferay (JBOSS), form submission, different views (edit/help) all work fine. Just need to know how to have one portlet on the page talk with another portlet. So far have been unsuccessful :( Anyone?

• cakephp why can't I have an admin route and a superuser route?

  In core.php I can define Configure::write('Routing.admin', 'admin'); and /admin/controller/index will work. but if I define both Configure::write('Routing.admin', 'admin'); Configure::write('Routing.superuser', 'superuser'); and try to look at /superuser/blah/index/ instead of it saying the controller doesn't exist it says Error: SuperuserController could not be found. instead of saying Error: BlahController could not be found. When I first read the documentation I was under the impression I could run both routes, and not just one or the other. Is there something more I need to do?

• CKEditor plugin: Hightlight selected text by hovering on a new item in the toolbar and selecting fro

  I'm new to the CKEditor and I'm trying to create a simple plugin. What I'm hoping to accomplish is to allow the user to highlight some text and then hover on a new item in the toolbar that drops down on mouse over a few different highlight color options for the text. For example, the user could highlight some text, hover on my new item and then select a highlight color. This will be similar to the 'BGColor' plugin except instead of opening a color palette to choose from, the user would select from a drop down of options similar to when you choose to change the font size you have a list of options such as '10', '11', '12', etc. Any help would be appreciated on how to pull this off. I was hoping to check out how 'BGColor' and 'FontSize' plugins where implemented, but I can't find these in ../ckeditor/_source/plugins. Am I looking in the right spot? Also, the link for plugins here - http://docs.cksource.com/CKEditor_3.x/Developers_Guide isn't clickable so I'm not sure if there's a place for plugin documentation that I can check out.

• nested columns in compass/sass

  I've been studying compass and while it is a fun thing to play with and use, one thing bothers me(besides being unable to add padding as it wrecks the grid), how do I nest columns? I want to be able to do what blueprint does: nest containers like say, I have a 24-column page divided in two(17 and 7 columns). In the right part of that page(the one with 7 columns), I want to divided some elements into two(2 and 5 columns). I tried this: #main +container #main-content +column(17) +box-padding(17, 10px) :margin :right 0 #sidebar +column(7, true) +box-padding(7, 10px) That's the code for the main page. The sidebar contains a list with some labels and input fields li +container :margin :bottom 5px label +column(2) :margin :right 0 input +column(5, true) It kinda works, but inspecting the li in firebug shows that it's width is actually 950px as opposed to be just 270px since it is just 7 columns. I tried googling about nested columns but I can't seem to find any example in compass. I've also tried the wiki and the documentation to no avail.

• Multiple classes in body tag, multi-dimensional css structure or blueprint for insanity?

  This question is about an approach to css structuring, and so is more discussion oriented. I'm working with some outsourced css where the body tags have multiple classes assigned, up to half a dozen. (To make things a little worse, none of the css selectors include an html tag which is making it confusing to analyze the css.) These body classes are then used to modify classed or id'd widgets within. It seems like this approach is like adding an additional dimension to the css, perhaps in some attempt to create a structured css approach. Documentation might have helped, had we been provided any. This differs from my approach where widgets are styled primarily via id'd divs, perhaps extracting the more generic elements into a class, i.e. div#MyWidget.widgets. Any ideas on whether such an approach is maintainable, especially considering I am dealing with websites with thousands of pages including tons of legacy stuff, all done by different people with different skill levels?   I'm trying to compile a simple example of generic classes / type patterns (see http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/users_guide/generic-classes.html) in Haskell but it won't compile. Any ideas about what's wrong with the code would be helpful. According to the documentation there should be a module Generics with the data types Unit, :*:, and :+: but ghc (6.12.1) complaints about Not in scope: data constructor 'Unit' etc. It seems like there's a package instant-generics with the data types :*:, :+: and U but when I import that module (instead of Generics) I get the error Illegal type pattern in the generic bindings {myPrint _ = ""} The complete source code is import Generics.Instant class MyPrint a where myPrint :: a -> String myPrint {| U |} _ = "" myPrint {| a :*: b |} (x :*: y) = "" (show x) ++ ":*:" ++ (show y) myPrint {| a :+: b |} _ = "" data Foo = Foo String instance MyPrint a => MyPrint a main = myPrint $ Foo "hi" and I compile it using ghc --make Foo.hs -fglasgow-exts -XGenerics -XUndecidableInstances P.S. • phing nested if conditions

  Hello - I am having trouble understanding the Phing documentation regarding multiple conditions for a given tag. It implies you cannot have multiple conditions unless you use the tag, but there are no examples of how to use it. Consequently I nested two tags, however I feel silly doing this when I know there is a better way. Does anyone know how I can use the tag to accomplish the following: <if><equals arg1="${deployment.host.type}" arg2="unrestricted" /><then> <if><equals arg1="${db.adapter}" arg2="PDO_MYSQL"/><then> <!-- Code Here --> </then></if> </then></if>

  In the latest version of Lucene (or Lucene.NET), what is the proper way to get the search results back in sorted order? I have a document like this: var document = new Lucene.Document(); document.AddField("Text", "foobar"); document.AddField("CreationDate", DateTime.Now.Ticks.ToString()); // store the date as an int lucene.AddDocument(document); Now I want do a search and get my results back in order of most recent. How can I do a search that orders results by CreationDate? All the documentation I see is for old Lucene versions that use now-deprecated APIs.

• resetting the image in an NSView

  I think this is a very simple question, but I’m new to programming so I may be going about it in a wrong-headed way. I have a basic understanding of Objective-C writing terminal applications and am teaching myself how to use the Cocoa GUI. I understand how to use IBOutlet and IBAction to connect a simple button to a method that will repeatedly send random numbers to a textfield . I understand how to add a NSView file, connect it to a custom view in interface builder and draw a path through random points in the view when the application launches. (I’ve been putting this code inside the - (void)drawRect:(NSRect)dirtyRect method that is declared when the file is created). What I can’t seem to figure out is how to connect a button to an action that will then ‘refresh’ the view – in this case repopulate it with another set of random points connected with a path. Looking at the documentation, I think I should somehow be using – (void) setNeedsDisplay(BOOL)flag but nothing I have tried so far had worked. Please tell me, what am I missing here?
