  • How to take a collection of bytes and pull typed values out of it?

    - by Pat
    Say I have a collection of bytes var bytes = new byte[] {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}; and I want to pull out a defined value from the bytes as a managed type, e.g. a ushort. What is a simple way to define what types reside at what location in the collection and pull out those values? One (ugly) way is to use System.BitConverter and a Queue or byte[] with an index and simply iterate through, e.g.: int index = 0; ushort first = System.BitConverter.ToUint16(bytes, index); index += 2; // size of a ushort int second = System.BitConverter.ToInt32(bytes, index); index += 4; ... This method gets very, very tedious when you deal with a lot of these structures! I know that there is the System.Runtime.InteropServices.StructLayoutAttribute which allows me to define the locations of types inside a struct or class, but there doesn't seem to be a way to import the collection of bytes into that struct. If I could somehow overlay the struct on the collection of bytes and pull out the values, that would be ideal. E.g. Foo foo = (Foo)bytes; // doesn't work because I'd need to implement the implicit operator ushort first = foo.first; int second = foo.second; ... [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Explicit, Size=FOO_SIZE)] public struct Foo { [FieldOffset(0)] public ushort first; [FieldOffset(2)] public int second; } Any thoughts on how to achieve this?

  • Why I can't get all UDP packets?

    - by Jack
    My program use UdpClient to try to receive 27 responses from 27 hosts. The size of the response is 10KB. My broadband incoming bandwidth is 150KB/s. The 27 responses are sent from the hosts almost at the same time and for every 10 secs. However, I can only receive 8 - 17 responses each time. The number of responses that I can receive is quite dynamic but within the range. Can anyone tell me why? why can't I receive all? I understand UDP is not reliable. but I tried receiving 5 - 10 responses at the same time, it worked. I guess the network links are not so bad. The code is very simple. ON the 27 hosts, I just use UdpClient to send 10KB to my machine. On my machine, I have one UdpClient receive datagrams. Each time I get a data, I create a thread to handle it (basically handling it means just print out "I received 10KB", but it runs in a thread). listener = new UDPListener(Port); listener.Start(); while (true) { try { UDPContext context = listener.Accept(); ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(new WaitCallback(HandleMessage), context); } catch (Exception) { } } If I reduce the size of the response down to 3KB, the case gets much better that roughly 25 responses can be received. Any more idea? UDP buffer problems???

  • Creating UIButton using helper method

    - by ddawber
    I have a subclass of UITableView and in it I want to generate number of labels that share the same properties (font, textColor, backgroundColor, etc.). I decided the easiest way to achieve this would be to create a helper method which creates the label with some common properties set: - (UILabel *)defaultLabelWithFrame:(CGRect)frame { UILabel *label = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:frame]; label.font = [UIFont fontWithName:@"Helvetica" size:14]; label.textColor = [UIColor colorWithWhite:128.0/255.0 alpha:1.0]; label.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; return label; } I use the method like this: UILabel *someLabel = [self defaultLabelWithFrame:CGRectMake(0,0,100,100)]; [self addSubview:someLabel]; [someLabel release]; My concern here is that when creating the label in the method it is retained, but when I then assign it to someLabel, it is retained again and I have no way of releasing the memory when created in the method. What would be best the best approach here? I fee like I have two options: Create a subclass of UILabel for the default label type. Create an NSMutableArray called defaultLabels and store the labels in this: - (UILabel *)defaultLabelWithFrame:(CGRect)frame { UILabel *label = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:frame]; label.font = [UIFont fontWithName:@"Helvetica" size:14]; label.textColor = [UIColor colorWithWhite:128.0/255.0 alpha:1.0]; label.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; [defaultLabels addObject:label]; [labels release]; //I can release here return [defaultLabels lastObject]; //I can release defaultLabels when done } I appreciate your thoughts. Cheers.

  • Efficient Multiplication of Varying-Length #s [Conceptual]

    - by Milan Patel
    Write the pseudocode of an algorithm that takes in two arbitrary length numbers (provided as strings), and computes the product of these numbers. Use an efficient procedure for multiplication of large numbers of arbitrary length. Analyze the efficiency of your algorithm. I decided to take the (semi) easy way out and use the Russian Peasant Algorithm. It works like this: a * b = a/2 * 2b if a is even a * b = (a-1)/2 * 2b + a if a is odd My pseudocode is: rpa(x, y){ if x is 1 return y if x is even return rpa(x/2, 2y) if x is odd return rpa((x-1)/2, 2y) + y } I have 3 questions: Is this efficient for arbitrary length numbers? I implemented it in C and tried varying length numbers. The run-time in was near-instant in all cases so it's hard to tell empirically... Can I apply the Master's Theorem to understand the complexity...? a = # subproblems in recursion = 1 (max 1 recursive call across all states) n / b = size of each subproblem = n / 1 - b = 1 (problem doesn't change size...?) f(n^d) = work done outside recursive calls = 1 - d = 0 (the addition when a is odd) a = 1, b^d = 1, a = b^d - complexity is in n^d*log(n) = log(n) this makes sense logically since we are halving the problem at each step, right? What might my professor mean by providing arbitrary length numbers "as strings". Why do that? Many thanks in advance

  • How to validate an array in a PHP form?

    - by SlAcKeR
    I'm fairly new to php and was wondering how do I validate the array for the states and where do I place the php code at? I already did the address part but I'm stuck at the states part. Here is the validation code. if (isset($_POST['contact_info_submitted'])) { // Handle the form. $address = mysqli_real_escape_string(htmlentities($_POST['address'])); } Here is the form code. <li><label for="address-1">Address 1: </label><input type="text" name="address-1" id="address-1" size="25" class="input-size" value="<?php if (isset($_POST['address'])) echo $_POST['address']; ?>" /></li> <li><label for="state-province">State/Province: </label> <?php echo '<select name="state-province" id="state-province">' . "\n"; foreach($state_options as $option) { if ($option == $state) { echo '<option value="' . $option . '" selected="selected">' . $option . '</option>' . "\n"; } else { echo '<option value="'. $option . '">' . $option . '</option>'."\n"; } } echo '</select>'; ?> </li>

  • Issue with WatchService in java 7

    - by user972590
    I'm using jdk7's WatchService API for monitoring the folder on file system.I'm sending a new file through email to that folder, when the file comes into that folder i m triggering the ENTRY_CRATE option. its working fine. But the issue is its generating two events of ENTRY_CREATE instead of one event which i'm invoking. BELOW IS THE CODE: Path dir = Paths.get(/var/mail); WatchService watcher = dir.getFileSystem().newWatchService(); dir.register(watcher, StandardWatchEventKinds.ENTRY_CREATE); System.out.println("waiting for new file"); WatchKey watckKey = watcher.take(); List<WatchEvent<?>> events = watckKey.pollEvents(); System.out.println(events.size()); for(WatchEvent<?> event : events){ if(event.kind() == StandardWatchEventKinds.ENTRY_CREATE){ String fileCreated=event.context().toString().trim(); } } In the above code I'm gettng the events size as 2. Can any one please help me in finding out the reason why i'm getting two events.

  • Getting a "for each" loop in Java to run in different order everytime

    - by R Stokes
    Hi, Basically my problem is that I'm trying to write a method that finds a random path in a graph of strings, which takes as it's parameters a start string, an integer length and a Vector of strings that will store the path. I'm attempting to do this by first adding the starting string to our blank vector, recursing through its neighbors until the vector's length (not including the start node) is the same as the integer length specified in the parameters. I've provided my code so far here: public Vector<String> findRandomPathFrom(String n, int len, Vector<String> randomPath){ randomPath.add(n); if (randomPath.size() == len + 1) return randomPath; for (String m : this.neighbours(n)){ if (!randomPath.contains(m) && findRandomPathFrom(m, len, randomPath) != null) return randomPath; } path.setSize(path.size() - 1); return null; } It seems to be working fine, returning a path with exactly the number of strings specified after the given start string. However, for any given starting string it generates the EXACT same path everytime, which kind of defeats the purpose of it being a random path generator. I'm guessing this problem is related to my "for each" loop, which loops through all the neighbouring strings of your current string. It seems to just be going with the first string in the neighbours vector every single time. Can anyone help me fix this problem so that it will choose a random neighbour instead of going in order? tl;dr - Any way of getting a "for each" loop in java to process a collection in a random order as oppoosed to start-to-finsih? Thanks in advance

  • How to zoom IFRAME content only without using a frame set?

    - by Baskaran
    I need to zoom frame content only. Here in my web page I used zoom: 0.75; height: 520px; width: 800px;. If I increase the zoom value it means that the frame size will be increased. <HTML> <HEAD> <TITLE> New Document </TITLE> <STYLE> #frame { width: 800px; height: 520px; border: 1px solid black; } #frame { zoom: 0.75; -moz-transform: scale(0.75); -moz-transform-origin: 0 0; } </STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY> <IFRAME id="frame" src="http://www.google.com"></IFRAME> </BODY> </HTML> In the above sample HTML page I want to zoom the content of the IFRAME without changing the size of that IFRAME.

  • Radio buttons change variable in JavaScript

    - by dmanexe
    I have two fields which calculate a total, but I have a radio button pair that determines a variable within the equation. Here's the radio button code: <input type="radio" name="estimate_pool_shape" value="1" /> Angle <input type="radio" name="estimate_pool_shape" value=".86392" /> Freeform Immediately after that, this JavaScript is then calculating the surface area of the pool based of these fields and script: (Length <input type="text" size="5" name="estimate_pool_length" onBlur="conv2inches(document.forms.mainform);" />) x (Width <input type="text" name="estimate_pool_width" size="5" onBlur="conv2inches(document.forms.mainform);" />) The following JavaScript already works to update the fields, I just need the variable it uses to set the field values to change based on the radio buttons. function conv2inches(mainform) { var oin; var oinches; if(isNaN(mainform.estimate_pool_width.value)||isNaN(mainform.estimate_pool_length.value)){ alert("Please enter numbers only"); return false; } oin = ((mainform.estimate_pool_width.value) + (mainform.estimate_pool_length.value) * %%%RADIO BUTTON VARIABLE HERE%%%); oinches = (oin); if(oinches==0){ alert("Please enter valid values into the boxes"); } mainform.estimate_pool_sqft.value = oinches; return false; }

  • An html input box isn't being displayed, Firebug says it has style="display: none" but I haven't don

    - by Ankur
    I have placed a form on a page which looks like this: <form id="editClassList" name="editClassList" method="get" action="EditClassList"> <label> <input name="class-to-add" id="class-to-add" size="42" type="text"> </label> <label> <input name="save-class-btn" id="save-class-btn" value="Save Class(es)" type="submit"> </label> </form> But when it get's rendered by a browser it comes out like this: <form id="editClassList" name="editClassList" method="get" action="EditClassList"> <label> <input style="display: none;" name="class-to-add" id="class-to-add" size="42" type="text"> </label> <label> <input name="save-class-btn" id="save-class-btn" value="Save Class(es)" type="submit"> </label> </form> For some reason style="display: none;" is being added, and I cann't understand why. This results in the text box not displaying.

  • Winforms App Not Displaying Graphical Elements in Design Mode

    - by Sev
    I wrote a bunch of code in the .cs file in c# for a winforms application. The application runs fine, and everything is in it's place. Something like this: using.. namespace Temp { public class Temp : Form { Button b1; TextBox t1; Temp() { b1.Text = "Some Text"; b1.Size = new Size(50,20); ... } void function1() { // stuff } static void Main() { Application.Run(new Temp()); } } } How can I modify my code (or fix it somehow) so that the design view displays the elements in their correct positions and view so that I can visually edit them instead of having to trial/error everything. Edit for Clarification My application runs fine. The problem is, that I didn't use designer to create the application and so in the designer view, the app is empty. But not empty when I run it, since everything is positioned programmatically in the .cs file. My question is, how can I fix this, so that the designer shows the objects correctly. There is no quick fix other than to redesign everything?

  • c++ malloc segment fault

    - by chnet
    I have a problem about malloc(). It is wired. My code is in the following. I use random generator to generate elements for an array. The array is opened by malloc(). If the array size is smaller than 8192, it is OK. If the size is larger than 8192, it shows segment fault. void random_generator(int num, int * array) { srand((unsigned)time(0)); int random_integer; for(int index=0; index< num; index++){ random_integer = (rand()%10000)+1; *(array+index) = random_integer; cout << index << endl; } } int main() { int array_size = 10000; int *input_array; input_array = (int*) malloc((array_size)); random_generator(8192, input_array); // if the number is larger than 8192, segment fault free(input_array); }

  • How to accommodate for the different screen resolution of iPhone 4?

    - by mystify
    This is a programming question! Read on before you vote to close! According to Apple, iPhone 4 has a new screen resolution: 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi This little detail affects our apps in a heavy way. Most of the demo apps on the net have one thing in common: They position views in the believe that the screen has a fixed size of 320 x 480 pixels. So what most -if not all- developers do is: They designed everything in such a way, that a touchable area is -for example- 50 x 50 pixels big. Just enough to tap it. Things have been positioned relative to the upper left, to reach a specific position on screen - let's say the center, or somewhere at the bottom. Edit: It seems Apple has integrated an switch that allows to tell if an app is highRes or not. Nice. When we develop high-resolution apps, probably they won't work on older devices. And if they did, they would suffer a lot from 4-times the size of any image, having to scale them down in memory. This is community wiki. Just add anything that you think is relevant to this huge problem (constant screen res was one of the main reasons why I didn't go for Android!!).

  • Loading more than 10 images on iPhone??

    - by SeniorLee
    I'm trying to add more than 10 pictures on ScrollView. NSUInteger i; for (i = 1; i <= numberOfImage; i++) { NSString *imageName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"d%dimage%d.png", imageSection, i]; UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:imageName]; UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; // setup each frame to a default height and width, it will be properly placed when we call "updateScrollList" CGRect rect = imageView.frame; rect.size.height = kScrollObjHeight; rect.size.width = kScrollObjWidth; imageView.frame = rect; imageView.tag = i; // tag our images for later use when we place them in serial fashion [scrollView addSubview:imageView]; [imageView release]; } This code is from Apple example and it works fine. But if the variable 'i' is bigger than 10, 'UIImage *image' is empty. The imageName seems to correct. But I don't know why it does not load image. Does anybody sees the problem?? And one more thing. If I do like that, does iOS controls memory automatically? I mean it's kind of wasting memory if all (more than 10) images are loaded on memory even they are not displayed. I've heard that iOS loads images only displayed on screen and free images those are not displayed. Is that right? Thanks for reading.

  • Added CAGradientLayer, getting this in my UIView dealloc: [CALayer release]: message sent to deallocated instance

    - by developerdoug
    Here there, I have a custom UIView. This view acts as a activity indicator but as label above the UIActivityIndicatorView. In the init, I add a CAGradientLayer. I allocate and initialize it and insert it at index 0 as a sublayer of the UIView layer property. In my dealloc method was called, I received a message in the console: - [CALayer release]: message sent to deallocated instance. My code: @interface LabelActivityIndicatorView () { UILabel *_label; UIActivityIndicatorView *_activityIndicatorView; CAGradientLayer *_gradientLayer; } @end @implementation LabelActivityIndicatorView //dealloc - (void) dealloc { [_label release]; [_activityIndicatorView release]; //even tried to remove the layer [_gradientLayer removeFromSuperLayer]; [_gradientLayer release]; [super dealloc]; } // init - (id) initWithFrame:(CGRect)frame { if ( (self = [super initWithFrame:frame]) ) { // init the label // init the gradient layer _gradientLayer = [[CAGradientLayer alloc] init]; [_gradientLayer setBounds:[self bounds]]; [_gradientLayer setPosition:CGPointMake(frame.size.width/2, frame.size.height/2)]; [[self layer] insertSublayer:_gradientLayer atIndex:0]; [[self layer] setNeedsDisplay]; } return self; } @end Anyone have any ideas. Since I'm allocating and initializing the gradient layer I'm responsible for releasing it. I should be able to alloc and init and assign to some ivar. Perhaps I should create a property with retain on it. Thanks,

  • Client-Side caching on IIS7 doesn't seem to work

    - by thomasbtv
    I have set content caching on a specific folder by following the local web.config method. I don't think it works, and I would like to fix this. I activate the cache using the IIS / HTTP Headers / Common headers feature. I set them to 1 day of expiration. I opened a page with Google Chrome in private navigation, and then open the Network tab in the console. The first time I load the page, everything loads from the site, obviously. If I refresh the page, I see 2 types of loading in the Network console: the files from Google and Facebook and such have a status of 200, and a size of (from cache). the files from the folder for which I set the caching have a status of 304 and their size is displayed. So, I guess the caching setting doesn't work? Or does the 304 response means that it's loaded from the cache? If they aren't, how can I make it work ? Thanks !

  • ViewController behaving oddly when pushed on the window

    - by ayazalavi
    I am using multiple controller during launch of an application in app delegate. One controller is for registration and the second controller is tabbar. tabbar was loading fine but when I pushed registration controller on window, contents went up by 20 units and I have good white blank screen at bottom. Therefore I recreated frame of my registration view controller in its viewdidload method and slided it 20 units down. The code is self.view.frame = CGRectMake(0, 20, self.view.frame.size.width, self.view.frame.size.height); and code in my app delegate for launch application was - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions { if (![self accountExists]) { //code if account does not exists on iphone app database self.registerAccount = [[registerViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"registerViewController" bundle:nil]; [window addSubview:registerAccount.view]; } else if([self autoLoginForAnyAccount]){ //code for autologin to app } else { self.tabBarController.selectedIndex = 1; self.tabBarController.delegate = self; [window addSubview:tabBarController.view]; } [window makeKeyAndVisible]; return YES; } if anyone knows why there is a white space at bottom when registration controller is pushed then please share it with me.

  • Adding fields until screen is full

    - by Eric
    For the sake of this question, let us suppose that I want a row of buttons. I want to put as many buttons in that row as I can fit on the screen, but no more. In other words, as long as a prospective button will not be cut off or have its text shortened, add it. It seems that I should be able to do something like: HorizontalFieldManager hfm = new HorizontalFieldManager(); int remainingWidth = Display.getWidth(); int i =0; while(true) { ButtonField bf = new ButtonField("B " + i); remainingWidth -= bf.getWidth(); if(remainingWidth<0) break; hfm.add(bf); i++; } add(hfm); But this doesn't work. bf.getWidth() is always 0. I suspect that this is because the button has not yet been laid out when I query for the width. So, perhaps I could just make sure the buttons are always the same size. But this won't work for a few reasons: Different BB platforms have different looks for buttons and text that will fit on a button on a Curve won't fit on a button on a Storm. 3rd party themes may change the look of buttons, so I can't even count on buttons being a certain size on a certain platform. Is there no way for me to actually check the remaining space before adding a button? It feels like a fairly useful feature; am I just missing something?

  • How to check if a position inside a std string exists ?? (c++)

    - by yox
    Hello, i have a long string variable and i want to search in it for specific words and limit text according to thoses words. Say i have the following text : "This amazing new wearable audio solution features a working speaker embedded into the front of the shirt and can play music or sound effects appropriate for any situation. It's just like starring in your own movie" and the words : "solution" , "movie". I want to substract from the big string (like google in results page): "...new wearable audio solution features a working speaker embedded..." and "...just like starring in your own movie" for that i'm using the code : for (std::vector<string>::iterator it = words.begin(); it != words.end(); ++it) { int loc1 = (int)desc.find( *it, 0 ); if( loc1 != string::npos ) { while(desc.at(loc1-i) && i<=80){ i++; from=loc1-i; if(i==80) fromdots=true; } i=0; while(desc.at(loc1+(int)(*it).size()+i) && i<=80){ i++; to=loc1+(int)(*it).size()+i; if(i==80) todots=true; } for(int i=from;i<=to;i++){ if(fromdots) mini+="..."; mini+=desc.at(i); if(todots) mini+="..."; } } but desc.at(loc1-i) causes OutOfRange exception... I don't know how to check if that position exists without causing an exception ! Help please!

  • Why doesn't line-height work on FF/3.5.8(Mac)?

    - by Znarkus
    I can't get line-height on a text input to work on Firefox 3.5.8/(Mac). Works flawlessly on: IE6 IE7 IE8 FF3.6/PC FF3.6/Mac Safari Test code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <title>asd</title> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://yui.yahooapis.com/2.8.0r4/build/reset/reset-min.css" /> </head> <body> <input type="text" value="Hello" style="line-height:50px;height:50px;font-size:16px;" /> <input type="text" value="Hello" style="padding:17px 0;font-size:16px;" /> </body> </html> Is there an alternate solution or any idea how to fix this? Edit: Updated the test code, to compare line-height vs. padding technique. Padding works on all above browsers except IE8. Whaat? I can't test on FF/3.5.8 anymore, could someone please report the result from this browser on any plattform? I'm now thinking this is a Firefox 3.5.8 issue, plattform independent.

  • Why isn't our c# graphics code working any more?

    - by Jared
    Here's the situation: We have some generic graphics code that we use for one of our projects. After doing some clean-up of the code, it seems like something isn't working anymore (The graphics output looks completely wrong). I ran a diff against the last version of the code that gave the correct output, and it looks like we changed one of our functions as follows: static public Rectangle FitRectangleOld(Rectangle rect, Size targetSize) { if (rect.Width <= 0 || rect.Height <= 0) { rect.Width = targetSize.Width; rect.Height = targetSize.Height; } else if (targetSize.Width * rect.Height > rect.Width * targetSize.Height) { rect.Width = rect.Width * targetSize.Height / rect.Height; rect.Height = targetSize.Height; } else { rect.Height = rect.Height * targetSize.Width / rect.Width; rect.Width = targetSize.Width; } return rect; } to static public Rectangle FitRectangle(Rectangle rect, Size targetSize) { if (rect.Width <= 0 || rect.Height <= 0) { rect.Width = targetSize.Width; rect.Height = targetSize.Height; } else if (targetSize.Width * rect.Height > rect.Width * targetSize.Height) { rect.Width *= targetSize.Height / rect.Height; rect.Height = targetSize.Height; } else { rect.Height *= targetSize.Width / rect.Width; rect.Width = targetSize.Width; } return rect; } All of our unit tests are all passing, and nothing in the code has changed except for some syntactic shortcuts. But like I said, the output is wrong. We'll probably just revert back to the old code, but I'm curious if anyone has any idea what's going on here. Thanks.

  • How can i create an n-dimensional array in c

    - by shortCircuit
    I was thinking of making a function that would accept the size of array as a parameter and create a n dimensional array. My room-mate took the liberty of making it complex. He said lets write a function that takes n parameters and returns an n-dimensional array using those parameters as the dimensions. Now i realize an one-day and d array is easy to implement with pointers. For 2d array the snippet would be something like (standard way) : int** x; int* temp; x = (int**)malloc(m * sizeof(int*)); temp = (int*)malloc(m*n * sizeof(int)); for (int i = 0; i < m; i++) { x[i] = temp + (i * n); } where the array is of size m*n; But the problem lies how do we find the nested loop parameters for a n-dimensional array? Is there any way to optimize the code?

  • Determing if an unordered vector<T> has all unique elements

    - by Hooked
    Profiling my cpu-bound code has suggested I that spend a long time checking to see if a container contains completely unique elements. Assuming that I have some large container of unsorted elements (with < and = defined), I have two ideas on how this might be done: The first using a set: template <class T> bool is_unique(vector<T> X) { set<T> Y(X.begin(), X.end()); return X.size() == Y.size(); } The second looping over the elements: template <class T> bool is_unique2(vector<T> X) { typename vector<T>::iterator i,j; for(i=X.begin();i!=X.end();++i) { for(j=i+1;j!=X.end();++j) { if(*i == *j) return 0; } } return 1; } I've tested them the best I can, and from what I can gather from reading the documentation about STL, the answer is (as usual), it depends. I think that in the first case, if all the elements are unique it is very quick, but if there is a large degeneracy the operation seems to take O(N^2) time. For the nested iterator approach the opposite seems to be true, it is lighting fast if X[0]==X[1] but takes (understandably) O(N^2) time if all the elements are unique. Is there a better way to do this, perhaps a STL algorithm built for this very purpose? If not, are there any suggestions eek out a bit more efficiency?

    struct ptr{ int node; ptr *next; ptr(){} ptr(int _node, ptr *_next){ node=_node; next=_next; } }; struct list_t{ ptr *sht; int size; void push(int node){ size++; sht=new ptr(node,sht); } }shthead[100001], comp[200001], tree[200001]; The struct ptr is a smart pointer, be used as a linked list. But when I debug the code in gdb, I found that the ptr*'s were all converted to void*. GDB output: (gdb) pt ptr type = struct ptr { int node; void *next; public: ptr(void); ptr(int, void *); } However, I can still see the data of the struct if I covert them back to ptr* in gdb. What's the reason for this please?

  • error catching exception while System.out.print

    - by user1702633
    I have 2 classes, one that implements a double lookup( int i); and one where I use that lookup(int i) in solving a question, or in this case printing the lookup values. This case is for an array. So I read the exception documentation or google/textbook and come with the following code: public double lookup(int i) throws Exception { if( i > numItems) throw new Exception("out of bounds"); return items[i]; } and take it over to my class and try to print my set, where set is a name of the object type I define in the class above. public void print() { for (int i = 0; i < set.size() - 1; i++) { System.out.print(set.lookup(i) + ","); } System.out.print(set.lookup(set.size())); } I'm using two print()'s to avoid the last "," in the print, but am getting an unhandled exception Exception (my exception's name was Exception) I think I have to catch my exception in my print() but cannot find the correct formatting online. Do I have to write catch exception Exception? because that gives me a syntax error saying invalid type on catch. Sources like http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/exceptions/ are of little help to me, I'm can't seem to grasp what the text is telling me. I'm also having trouble finding sources with multiple examples where I can actually understand the coding in the examples. so could anybody give me a source/example for the above catch phrase and perhaps a decent source of examples for new Java programmers? my book is horrendous and I cannot seem to find an understandable example for the above catch phrase online.
