Can I float a block of text like an image?

If you change "float:right" to "float:left" in this W3schools example, you'll get an image floating to the left of the paragraph. I want to do the same thing with a block of text. The purpose is to be able to have little annotations to the left of paragraphs. If you know of any way to do this, I'd be very grateful. I'd be really grateful (and amazed) if there were a way to place this annotation midway in a paragraph and have text flow around it. I've searched all over for an answer but possibly don't know how to ask the question so that search engines can help me. So now I'm appealing to humans!!

jQuery validation plugin: valid() does not work with remote validation ?

I got started by following this awesome tutorial, but wanted to do the validation on on keyup and place my errors somewhere else. The remote validation shows its own error message at the appropriate times, making me think I had it working. But if I ask specifically if a field with remote validation is valid, it says no, actually, its not. "false" : "true" } end end I think that my problem might have everything to do with this ticket over at jQuery, and tried to implement that code, but, being new to jQuery, it's all a bit over my head. When I say bit, I mean way way. Any ideas to fix it, or a new way to look at it, would be a big help.

How can I dynamically resize the jQuery Colorbox plugin?

The AJAX content loaded in a Colorbox has some JavaScript included that resizes things within the content. Colorbox determines its sizing based on the sizes before all of the AJAX happens. How can I make the Colorbox resize after the content has been loaded? AutoFit in PowerPoint: Turn it OFF

Once a feature has shipped, it is very hard to eliminate it from the next release. If I was in charge of the PowerPoint product, I would not hesitate for a second to remove the dreadful AutoFit feature. Fortunately, AutoFit can be turned off on a slide-by-slide basis and, even better, globally: go to the PowerPoint "Options" and under "Proofing" find the "AutoCorrect Options…" button which brings up the dialog where you need to uncheck the last two checkboxes (see the screenshot to the right). AutoFit is the ability for the user to keep hitting the Enter key as they type more and more text into a slide and it magically still fits, by shrinking the space between the lines and then the text font size. It is the root of all slide evil. It encourages people to think of a slide as a Word document (which may be your goal, if you are presenting to execs in Microsoft, but that is a different story). AutoFit is the reason you fall asleep in presentations. AutoFit causes too much text to appear on a slide which by extension causes the following: When the slide appears, the text is so small so it is not readable by everyone in the audience. They dismiss the presenter as someone who does not care for them and then they stop paying attention. If the text is readable, but it is too much (hence the AutoFit feature kicked in when the slide was authored), the audience is busy reading the slide and not paying attention to the presenter. Humans can either listen well or read well at the same time, so when they are done reading they now feel that they missed whatever the speaker was saying. So they "switch off" for the rest of the slide until the next slide kicks in, which is the natural point for them to pick up paying attention again. Every slide ends up with different sized text. The less visual consistency between slides, the more your presentation feels unprofessional. You can do better than dismiss the (subconscious) negative effect a deck with inconsistent slides has on an audience. In contrast, the absence of AutoFit Leads to consistency among all slides in a deck with regards to amount of text and size of said text. Ensures the text is readable by everyone in the audience (presuming the PowerPoint template is designed for the room where the presentation is delivered). Encourages the presenter to create slides with the minimum necessary text to help the audience understand the basic structure, flow, and key points of the presentation. The "meat" of the presentation is delivered verbally by the presenter themselves, which is why they are in the room in the first place. Following on from the previous point, the audience can at a quick glance consume the text on the slide when it appears and then concentrate entirely on the presenter and what they have to say. You could argue that everything above has nothing to do with the AutoFit feature and all to do with the advice to keep slide content short. You would be right, but the on-by-default AutoFit feature is the one that stops most people from seeing and embracing that truth. In other words, the slides are the tool that aids the presenter in delivering their message, instead of the presenter being the tool that advances the slides which hold the message. To get there, embrace terse slides: the first step is to turn off this horrible feature (that was probably introduced due to the misuse of this tool within Microsoft). Unity GUI not in build, but works fine in editor

I have: GUITexture attached to an object A script that has GUIStyles created for the Textfield and Buttons that are created in OnGUI(). This script is attached to the same object in number 1 3 GUIText objects each separate from the above. A script that enables the GUITexture and the script in number 1 and 2 respectively This is how it is supposed to work: When I cross the finish line, number 4 script enables number 1 GUITexture component and number 2 script component. The script component uses one of number 3's GUIText objects to show you your best lap time, and also makes a GUI.Textfield for name entry and 2 GUI.Buttons for "Submit" and "Skip". If you hit "Submit" the script will submit the time. No matter which button you press, The remaining 2 GUIText objects from number 3 will show you the top 10 best times. For some reason, when I run it in editor, everything works 100%, but when I'm in different kinds of builds, the results vary. When I am in a webplayer, The GUITexture and the textfield and buttons appear, but the textfield and buttons are plain and have no evidence of GUIStyles. When I click one of the buttons, the score gets submitted but I do not get the fastest times showing. When I am in a standalone build, the GUITexture shows up, but nothing else does. If I remove the GUIStyle parameter of the GUI.Textfield and GUI.Button, they show up. Why am I getting these variations and how can I fix it? #include file vs iframe or is there a better way

Sonar Analysis crashing with default configuration in Maven

I'm starting to experiment with Sonar, and having trouble. I'm running everything on the same Red Hat Linux server, against Java 1.6.10. I launched the server with "bin/linux-x86-32" (the JVM is 32-bit). The sonar.log shows no SEVERE or ERROR and one WARNING, that I'm using the default Derby database (I'll fix that once I get things running at all). I am trying to build a Maven project that builds a JAR. I made no Sonar-specific changes (other than one described below). I can run "mvn clean install" with no problem. However, if I then run "mvn -e sonar:sonar", I get the stacktrace listed below. The server logs no events. I added the dependency "commons-pool:commons-pool:20030825.183949, but to no avail. There is no extra <hr/> on the page, and I cannot figure out why it is there. Do you see anything that is causing it? I am sorry for posting the whole thing, I do not know exactly where it starts. What do I need in order to extract and combine text files from multiple ZIP files, via command line?

I've got an interesting scripting challenge in front of me. I'm fairly certain there's a way to do it, but I feel like I'm probably lacking some particular tools and/or functional knowledge. There's some fifty-plus ZIP files that each contain, among other things, text files that need to be merged with one another. The structure is something like this: C:\Reports\FirstJob-1.zip |-MyName |-FirstJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt C:\Reports\FirstJob-2.zip |-MyName |-FirstJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt C:\Reports\SecondJob-1.zip |-MyName |-SecondJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt If I had all the Report.txt files in one regular folder, and uniquely named, I could probably just write a FOR statement that targets *.txt and runs something like type filename.txt >> Consolidated.txt on each. However, these all have the same file name and are embedded deep within separate ZIP files. The potentially useful tools I currently have at my disposal are Windows XP Professional SP3, PowerShell, and WinZip. I'd rather not download or install anything else, but I do understand that third-party tools (or additional tools from Microsoft or WinZip) may be necessary. Whatever tools I use should run natively in Windows. I really don't want to have to mess with Cygwin or other emulators on this system. At the very least, I need a tool that will allow me to analyze and manipulate ZIP files from the command line. Also, are there any other particular complications to this that I've not yet thought of?

What could cause the file command in Linux to report a text file as data?

I have a couple of C++ source files (one .cpp and one .h) that are being reported as type data by the file command in Linux. When I run the file -bi command against these files, I'm given this output (same output for each file): application/octet-stream; charset=binary Each file is clearly plain-text (I can view them in vi). What's causing file to misreport the type of these files? Could it be some sort of Unicode thing? Both of these files were created in Windows-land (using Visual Studio 2005), but they're being compiled in Linux (it's a cross-platform application). Any ideas would be appreciated. Update: I don't see any null characters in either file. I found some extended characters in the .cpp file (in a comment block), removed them, but file still reports the same encoding. I've tried forcing the encoding in SlickEdit, but that didn't seem to have an effect. When I open the file in vim, I see a [converted] line as soon as I open the file. Perhaps I can get vim to force the encoding?

How can I make non-anti-aliased text look good in Firefox on Mac OS X?

After being a Windows user for the last 10 years, I got a MacBook Pro, which I'm working on configuring to my liking. I find small-size anti-aliased text to be blurry and hard to read, so I typically disable it. I've found the settings in the General Control Panel, and used TinkerTool to increase the anti-alias threshold size to 18pt. Mac OS X and other applications appear to respect these settings. A problem appears when I use Firefox. By default, it's configured to ignore the Mac OS anti-alias settings. This is changed by going to about:config, and setting gfx.use_text_smoothing_setting = true (default is false). However, even with this setting, it appears Firefox is still rendering the fonts under the assumption that they will be anti-aliased, which results in very odd and uneven spacing, as you can see in this example (pay attention to the placement of the "s" in "Disable"): With anti-aliasing: Without anti-aliasing: How can I configure Firefox to both not use anti-aliasing and to use correct font spacing? Starting programs from terminal then exiting terminal exits started programs?

I really was unsure how to phrase the question title. What I mean is that when I use the terminal to start a program, most of the time when the terminal is closed it also exits the programs started from it. Now this makes sense if we look at it from a hierarchical standpoint of the terminal being the parent process which spawns child processes, and any halt of the parent causes subsequent halting of the children as well. However, I've noticed this to not always be the case. For example, I downloaded Sublime Text Editor and created a symlink in PATH. I can start this program by issuing a sublime command from the terminal, but subsequent closure of the terminal program does nothing to sublime. However, other times either the child process that was started it also closed or it hangs up and causes problems. tl;dr: Is it always the case that programs started from a closed parent process will be closed when the parent is exited? And if so, is there way to start a program from the terminal and then close the terminal without exiting the started process? The whole point here is to start programs from the terminal so I do not overly-populate my desktop with symlinks.

Formatting not retained in paste from Ditto (clipboard manager). Plain text pasted instead [Solved] Add supported types

I'm trying to use Ditto on the Ditto documentation. If I were to copy the table of contents, then paste it (without Ditto) to the word processor, I get http://i.imgur.com/V1GU3.png, and the formatting is maintained. As as a result of the copy operation, the table of contents also goes into the Saved Items List (= History List = Lists the Clips saved from the Clipboard) in Ditto’s Main Window: I open a blank document to paste from Ditto instead of the default clipboard, and press either Ctrl-`, the default Ditto window activation Global Hot Key, or click the tray icon. From this point, I can do 3 things to close the Ditto window, and place the item on the clipboard (the default clipboard?). Select the item, and press Enter Put the cursor on the item, and double-click Select the item, and press Ctrl-c 1) and 2) send a right-click where the cursor is, after the Ditto window closes (presumably to have the paste option ready to access?): Ctrl-c just closes the Ditto window. Whichever method is used, the contents are pasted in what I believe is plain text: http://i.imgur.com/mQAZH.png How do I keep the formatting that the default clipboard keeps? Thanks.

I am using HTTPWatch automation API to launch a new Firefox instance like that: HttpWatch.Controller ct = new HttpWatch.Controller(); HttpWatch.Plugin plugin = ct.FireFox.New(""); plugin.GotoURL("http://www.google.com"); These codes could start a Firefox browser successfully. Then I want to control the browser in WatiN 2.0: FireFox ff = Browser.AttachTo<FireFox>(Find.ByTitle("Google")); WatiN could not find Firefox window (JSSH plugin has been added in Firefox). But the same test on IE 7 is ok. I even tried to open a Firefox window manually and visit google.com page. WaitN in IE7 could attach to the browser, but Firefox failed. Is there anything wrong with my codes? Or any other advice? Thanks in advance! Error handling in Rails Controller for adding embedded Mongoid documents to Model

I have a Item model that has embedded documents. Currently, the following comments_controller code will add a comment to the item successfully. Positioning SVG Elements

In the course of toying with SVG for the first time (using the Raphael library), I've run into a problem positioning dynamic elements on the canvas in such a way that they're completely contained within the canvas. What I'm trying to do is randomly position n words/short phrases. Since the text is variable, its position needs to be variable as well so what I'm doing is: Initially creating the text at point 0,0 with no opacity. Checking the width of the drawn text element using text.getBBox().width. Setting a new x coordinate as Math.random() * (canvas_width - ( text_width/2 ) - pad). Altering the x coordinate of the text to the newly set value (text.attr( 'x', x ) ). Setting the opacity attribute of the text to 1. I'll be the first to admit that my math acumen is limited, but this seems pretty straightforward. Somehow, I still end up with text running off beyond the right edge of my canvas. For simplicity above, I removed the bit that also sets a minimum x value by adding it to the Math.random() result. It is there, though, and I see the same problem on the leading edge of the canvas. My understanding (such as it is), is that the Math.random() bits would generate a number between 0 and 1 which could then be multiplied by some number (in my case, the canvas width - half of the text width - some arbitrary padding) to get the outer bound. I'm dividing the width of the text in half because its position on the grid is set at its center. I hope I've just been staring at this for too long, but is my math that rusty or am I misunderstanding something about the behavior of Math.random(), SVG, text or anything else that's under the hood of this solution?

What is a robust jQuery Rich Text Editor with image upload capabilities?

I know this question has been asked countless times, but answers are mixed, so I thought I'd test the waters and see what the latest verdict is out in the development community. I need a [preferably jQuery] rich text editor plugin that simply attaches itself to <textarea> elements and supports image uploads. It doesn't need to be too advanced. Just alignment, bold, italic, styles and image support. I tried CKEditor (along with CKFinder for image uploads), but it just has too many features and is too heavy for what I need. This is going to be used for simple webpage editing.

Recommended way to remove events on destroy with jQuery UI Widget Factory

I'm using the jQuery UI Widget Factory to build a jQuery plugin. My plugin binds custom events to the window... _subscribe: function() { $(window).on("dragger.started", function() { ... }); } I am wondering how to go about removing these events, when a particular instance of the plugin is destroyed. If I use... destroy: function() { $(window).off("dragger.started"); } ...then that will mess up any other instances of the plugin on the page, as it will remove all "dragger.started" events. What is the recommended way to go about destroying only those events that are associated with an instance of the plugin? Thanks (in advance) for your help.

Is it dangerous to store user-enterable text into a hidden form via javascript?

In my asp.net MVC application I am using in place editors to allow users to edit fields without having a standard form view. Unfortunately, since I am using Linq to Sql combined with my data mapping layer I cannot just update one field at a time and instead need to send all fields over at once. So the solution I came up with was to store all my model fields into hidden fields, and provide span tags that contain the visible data (these span tags become editable due to my jquery plugin). When a user triggers a save of their edits of a field, jquery then takes their value and places it in the hidden form, and sends the whole form to the server to commit via ajax. When the data goes into the hidden field originally (page load) and into the span tags the data is properly encoded, but upon the user changing the data in the contenteditable span field, I just run $("#hiddenfield").val($("#spanfield").html(); Am I opening any holes this method? Obviously the server also properly encodes stuff prior to database entry.

How to run a .exe with dll in different location

I am working in C# and implementing Plugin Management feature to our application. I look through dll and exe to load up plugins that are in a specific folder say Plugins. These plugin applications have their own folder when they are installed and I will copy over the plugin application exe/dll to the Plugins folder. However, there are some plugin applications that requires other dlls to run, but I want to minimize the duplication. Is there a way that I can just copy over the .exe to the Plugins folder and have the other dependent dll files locate in other folder? How would I load the the plugin in c# if the .exe and .dll is not in the same location? Thanks.
