• Cannot get Virtualbox to install properly on Ubuntu 12.04

  I cannot get Virtualbox to install properly on my 12.04. I first went with a manual install for the .deb from the old builds section of the Virtualbox page. That .deb opened up the Software Center and installed. Then I got the error coming up of VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration is not available on your system. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot. which I can only assume was due to my Ubuntu version being 32-bit (System Details - Overview - OC type: 32-bit, right?) So I followed these instructions to remove the .deb manually, restarted my laptop, and then FOUND the actual Virtualbox install in the Software Center and installed from that (assuming it would give me the correct version I need for my system) So after all that (and then some), I'm still getting the same error when I connect to my new job's project in Virtualbox. Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to do here? This is the first time I've ever worked with Virtualbox, and no one at this company is using Ubuntu, so I'm on my own here. • Opportunity Nokia's

  Nokia’s alliance with Microsoft is likely to be good news for anyone using Microsoft technologies, and particularly for .NET developers. Before the announcement, the future wasn’t looking so bright for the ‘mobile’ version of Windows, Windows Phone. Microsoft currently has only 3.1% of the Smartphone market, even though it has been involved in it for longer than its main rivals. Windows Phone has now got the basics right, but that is hardly sufficient by itself to change its predicament significantly. With Nokia's help, it is possible. Despite the promise of multi-tasking for third party apps, integration with Microsoft platforms such as Xbox and Office, direct integration of Twitter support, and the introduction of IE 9 “later this year”, there have been frustratingly few signs of urgency on Microsoft’s part in improving the Windows Phone  product. Until this happens, there seems little prospect of reward for third-party developers brave enough to support the platform with applications. This is puzzling when one sees how well SQL Server and Microsoft’s other server technologies have thrived in recent years, under good leadership from a management that understands the technology. The same just hasn’t been true for some of the consumer products. In consequence, iPads and Android tablets have already exposed diehard Windows users, for the first time, to an alternative GUI for consumer Tablet PCs, and the comparisons aren’t always in Windows’ favour. Nokia’s problem is obvious: Android’s meteoric rise. Android now has 33% of the worldwide market for smartphones, while the market share of Nokia’s Symbian has dropped from 44% to 31%. As details of the agreement emerge, it would seem that Nokia will bring a great deal of expertise, such as imaging and Nokia Maps, to Windows Phone that should make it more competitive. It is wrong to assume that Nokia’s decline will continue: the shock of Android’s sudden rise could be enough to sting them back to their previous form, and they have Microsoft’s huge resources and marketing clout to help them. For the sake of the whole Windows stack, I really hope the alliance succeeds.

• Can non-IT people learn and take advantage of regular expressions? [closed]

  Often times, not-IT people has to deal with massive text data, clean it, filter it, modify it. Often times normal office tools like Excel lack the tools to make complex search and replace operations on text. Could this people benefit from regexps ? Can regexp be taught to them ? Are regular expressions the exclusive domain of programmers and unix/linux technicians ? Can they be learned by non-IT people, given regexps are not a programming language? Is this a valid or achievable goal to make some users regexp-literate through appopriate training ? Have you have any experiences on this issue? and if so, have it been successful ?

• Which toolkit to use for 3D MMO game development?

  Lately i've been thinking about which path to follow for developing an 3D Online game. I have googled a lot but i couldnt find a good article that covers both game development and online server & client development in same context. This question has been in mind for about 2 weeks now. So.. yesterday i started developing a game from scratch by using Irrlicht.Net Wrapper to use Socket library of .NET which im already familiar. But i found out .Net wrapper of Irrlicht is not totally finished yet and still have lacks from the original. So i lost all my motives :/. So i thought why not to ask the experts before i run into another dead end... What Game Engine and Networking Library is best way to go for 3D MMO Development? Here is some of my early conclusions: Please let me know the ones im wrong. C++: Best Performance for 3D Graphics. Most Game Engines has native C++ Libraries. • How can I pretty print erb in BBedit indenting rails tags and not just markup?

  I want to re-indent my code but the rails tags <% foo %> get aligned to the left with no indentation. What I'm using is: markup utilities format pretty print Does anyone know if there is a way to reconfigure this behavior? UPDATE: I just found this out but cant seem to get it working: "The 'Pretty print' option for Markup - Utilities - Format is now implemented internally using a Dreamweaver-style source format profile. This affords slightly prettier output than was possible before. Advanced users can override the factory format profile by placing an appropriately constructed file at ~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/SourceFormat.profile." I opened the bbedit app package, found the file, copied it to the folder indicated in "application support" and tweaked the desired indentation width just as a test before touching anything else, and it doesnt seem to do anything.

• Kernel panic error

  We have a dedicated server with software RAID1 and one of the disk failed recently. The disk was replaced but after rebuilding the array and rebooting the server freezes with a Kernel Panic message No filesystem could mount root, tried: reiserfs ext3 ext2 cramfs msdos vfat iso9660 romfs fuseblk xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(9,1) The filesystem on both disks is ext4. It seems the kernel can't load ext4 support. Is there any way to add ext4 support or do I need to recompile a new kernel again ? Interesting point that before disk replacement all was fine. The kernel is a stock kernel bzImage-2.6.34.6-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64 from our provider OVH Kind regards,

  I have this client that wants a single-product website. The product is a training-video that they want to deliver virtually and optionally physically. I usually do all the front-end design and back-end development but the budget is close to $0 to start with. So I'm looking for a platform like shopify or something where a shop/cart can be set up quickly and simply with minimal up-front cost - but which can accomodate some kind of paywall (DRM too?) for the online video with an option to purchase for an aditional cost the physical DVD. Am I approaching the wrong way all together? Or do you know of any platform that will accomodate the specs?

• Enable Remote Desktop File Transfer

  Most of the servers I RDP to support cut-and-paste file transfer (from my Win7 64 machine). One does not, and I can't figure out what configuration step is missing. I followed the steps outlined here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313292 but do not see the local file system on the remote server (or vice versa for that matter), and I cannot cut and paste files from the local to the remote system. If I try to cut and paste from the remote system to the local one, I get the error Cannot copy FILENAME: Windows cannot find '%1!ls!'. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking Search. The remote server is Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.

  Where can I get a list of recommended PDF viewer and form-filler components that I can buy and install in C#? I query on C# component PDF viewer on Google and get a lot of hits, but I'm not certain what programmers have tried and liked. Background: See, my employer is wanting me to build one in C# as a kind of training exercise, but also to be a product for sales lead generation for another product they sell. The employer is perfectly okay buying something, as long as it's good. I've learned VB6 and PHP, and know a little C and C++, so I'm trying to learn where people get the best-rated addon components for it, and especially for this PDF viewer and form filler thing he wants.

• Xml Serialization and the [Obsolete] Attribute

  I learned something new today: Starting with .NET 3.5, the XmlSerializer no longer serializes properties that are marked with the Obsolete attribute.  I can’t say that I really agree with this.  Marking something Obsolete is supposed to be something for a developer to deal with in source code.  Once an object is serialized to XML, it becomes data.  I think using the Obsolete attribute as both a compiler flag as well as controlling XML serialization is a bad idea. In this post, I’ll show you how I ran into this and how I got around it. The Setup Let’s start with some make-believe code to demonstrate the issue.  We have a simple data class for storing some information.  We use XML serialization to read and write the data: public class MyData { public int Age { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public List<String> Hobbies { get; set; }   public MyData() { this.Hobbies = new List<string>(); } } Now a few simple lines of code to serialize it to XML: static void Main(string[] args) { var data = new MyData {    FirstName = "Zachary", LastName = "Smith", Age = 50, Hobbies = {"Mischief", "Sabotage"}, }; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof (MyData)); serializer.Serialize(Console.Out, data); Console.ReadKey(); } And this is what we see on the console: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="IBM437"?> <MyData xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>   The Change So we decided to track the hobbies as a list of strings.  As always, things change and we have more information we need to store per-hobby.  We create a custom “Hobby” object, add a List<Hobby> to our MyData class and we obsolete the old “Hobbies” list to let developers know they shouldn’t use it going forward: public class Hobby { public string Name { get; set; } public int Frequency { get; set; } public int TimesCaught { get; set; }   public override string ToString() { return this.Name; } } public class MyData { public int Age { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } [Obsolete("Use HobbyData collection instead.")] public List<String> Hobbies { get; set; } public List<Hobby> HobbyData { get; set; }   public MyData() { this.Hobbies = new List<string>(); this.HobbyData = new List<Hobby>(); } } Here’s the kicker: This serialization is done in another application.  The consumers of the XML will be older clients (clients that expect only a “Hobbies” collection) as well as newer clients (that support the new “HobbyData” collection).  This really shouldn’t be a problem – the obsolete attribute is metadata for .NET compilers.  Unfortunately, the XmlSerializer also looks at the compiler attribute to determine what items to serialize/deserialize.  Here’s an example of our problem: static void Main(string[] args) { var xml = @"<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""IBM437""?> <MyData xmlns:xsi=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"" xmlns:xsd=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema""> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>"; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyData)); var stream = new StringReader(xml); var data = (MyData) serializer.Deserialize(stream);   if( data.Hobbies.Count != 2) { throw new ApplicationException("Hobbies did not deserialize properly"); } } If you run the code above, you’ll hit the exception.  Even though the XML contains a “<Hobbies>” node, the obsolete attribute prevents the node from being processed.  This will break old clients that use the new library, but don’t yet access the HobbyData collection. The Fix This fix (in this case), isn’t too painful.  The XmlSerializer exposes events for times when it runs into items (Elements, Attributes, Nodes, etc…) it doesn’t know what to do with.  We can hook in to those events and check and see if we’re getting something that we want to support (like our “Hobbies” node). • How do I install root-cern?

  Cern's ROOT environment installs fine on 10.10, and is even available in the Software Center, but it will not install or compile on Natty because the x11 directories are in new locations. I can redefine the paths, but then I get compile errors because only gcc 4.3 is supported through ROOT and Natty uses 4.5. I've given up and gone back to 10.10, but my question is, after installing ROOT on Maverick, if I upgrade back to Natty, will my old software still work with these new directory paths?

• Why would you use EAP-TTLS instead of PEAP?

  As I understood EAP-TTLS and PEAP share same level of security when implemented in wireless networks. Both only provide server side authentication via certificate. The drawback of EAP-TTLS can be non native support in Microsoft Windows so every user has to install additional software. The benefit of EAP-TTLS can be support for less secure authentication mechanisms (PAP, CHAP, MS-CHAP) but why would you need them in modern and properly secure wireless system? What are you opinions? Why should I implement EAP-TTLS instead of PEAP? Let's say that I have most Windows users, medium Linux users and least iOS, OSX users.
