  Hi, I'm trying to get the jQuery UI sortable plugin to work and I've created a list that looks like this: <ul id="sortable"> <li>Item 1</li> <li>Item 2</li> <li>Item 3</li> <li>Item 4</li> <li>Item 5</li> </ul> And I've included the plugin script files: $(function() { $("#sortable").sortable(); alert('test'); $("#sortable").disableSelection(); }); So I just tried putting the alert box before .sortable is run and the alertbox is showing. But putting it after .sortable isn't working. Which means that .sortable is failing right? • adding an uncertain number of fields using javascript

  I'm new to javascript and a novice programmer, so this might be a really easy question to answer. I would like to loop over the values of x number of fields and add them up to display the sum in a final field. I can perform this function if I explicitly call each field, but I want to abstract this so I can deal with a flexible number of fields. Here's example code I've come up with (that's not working for me).   I have two objects, Users and Mail. Users create Mail objects and send them to other users. If I wanted to get all mail for a User, I could create a method like GetMail() that would return an array of Mail objects owned by that User. But if I wanted to get all mail across the system, what "type" of object would be responsible for that? To solve this problem, I usually create a Manager, which is an object responsible for dealing with a collection of a particular type of object. MailManager deals with collections of Mail objects. GetMailForUser() is one method, GetAllMail() is another method. The User objects invokes the MailManager and executes GetMailForUser(me). Is this stupid? When a user executes the controller CreateMail, a new instance of the Mail object is created. The Mail object, seeing it is creating a new Mail of type 'sent', decides to go ahead and create a second Mail object for the recipient, of type 'received'. Creating one Mail object triggers the creation of a second Mail object. Is this stupid? Should the controller have created both Mail objects, or just the first 'sent' one? When two Users are friends, the association is stored in a table of Relationships. I use a simple object for Relationships. A RelationshipManager has a method called GetFriendsForUser(). The User object has a method GetFriends(), which invokes the RelationshipManager. Is this stupid?

• SOLR not searching on certain fields

  hey guys, just installed solr, edited the schema.xml, and am now trying to index it and search on it with some test data. In the XML file I'm sending to SOLR, one of my fields look like this: <field name="PageContent"><![CDATA[<p>some text in a paragrah tag</p>]]></field> There's HTML there, so I've wrapped it in CDATA. In my SOLR schema.xml, the definition for that field looks like this: <field name="PageContent" type="text" indexed="true" stored="true"/> When I ran the POSTing tool, everything went ok, but when I search for content which I know is inside the PageContent field, I get no results. However, when I set the node to PageContent, it works. But if I set it to any other field, it doesn't search in PageContent. Am I doing something wrong? what's the issue? thanks very much for any help cheers! UPDATE Just to clarify on the error. I've uploaded a "doc" with the following data: <field name="PageID">928</field> <field name="PageName">some name</field> <field name="PageContent"><![CDATA[<p>html content</p>]]></field> In my schema I've defined the fields as such: <field name="PageID" type="integer" indexed="true" stored="true" required="true"/> <field name="PageName" type="text" indexed="true" stored="true"/> <field name="PageContent" type="text" indexed="true" stored="true"/> And: <uniqueKey>PageID</uniqueKey> <defaultSearchField>PageName</defaultSearchField> Now, when I use the Solr admin tool and search for "some name" I get a result.   Hi: I am using myXmlDataDoc.DataSet.ReadXml(xml_file_name, XmlReadMode.InferSchema); to populate the tables within the dataset created by reading in a xml schema using: myStreamReader = new StreamReader(xsd_file_name); myXmlDataDoc.DataSet.ReadXmlSchema(myStreamReader); The problems I am facing is when it comes to read the xml tag: The readXml function puts the element in a different table and everything in the tables are 0s. • Using shared_ptr to implement RCU (read-copy-update)?

  I'm very interested in the user-space RCU (read-copy-update), and trying to simulate one via tr1::shared_ptr, here is the code, while I'm really a newbie in concurrent programming, would some experts help me to review? The basic idea is, reader calls get_reading_copy() to gain the pointer of current protected data (let's say it's generation one, or G1). writer calls get_updating_copy() to gain a copy of the G1 (let's say it's G2), and only one writer is allowed to enter the critical section. After the updating is done, writer calls update() to do a swap, and make the m_data_ptr pointing to data G2. The ongoing readers and the writer now hold the shared_ptr of G1, and either a reader or a writer will eventually deallocate the G1 data. Any new readers would get the pointer to G2, and a new writer would get the copy of G2 (let's say G3). • Binding ComboBoxes to enums... in Silverlight!

  So, the web, and StackOverflow, have plenty of nice answers for how to bind a combobox to an enum property in WPF. But Silverlight is missing all of the features that make this possible :(. For example: You can't use a generic EnumDisplayer-style IValueConverter that accepts a type parameter, since Silverlight doesn't support x:Type. You can't use ObjectDataProvider, like in this approach, since it doesn't exist in Silverlight. You can't use a custom markup extension like in the comments on the link from #2, since markup extensions don't exist in Silverlight. You can't do a version of #1 using generics instead of Type properties of the object, since generics aren't supported in XAML (and the hacks to make them work all depend on markup extensions, not supported in Silverlight). Massive fail! As I see it, the only way to make this work is to either Cheat and bind to a string property in my ViewModel, whose setter/getter does the conversion, loading values into the ComboBox using code-behind in the View. Make a custom IValueConverter for every enum I want to bind to. Are there any alternatives that are more generic, i.e. don't involve writing the same code over and over for every enum I want? I suppose I could do solution #2 using a generic class accepting the enum as a type parameter, and then create new classes for every enum I want that are simply class MyEnumConverter : GenericEnumConverter<MyEnum> {} What are your thoughts, guys?

• SqlCE DB occasionally freezes on one handheld, not another

  I have two types of custom handhelds which are similar, but slightly different, each running the same WinForm application and a WinCE database: Type 1: WinCE 4.2, 400 mhz, 93244 kb Type 2: WinCE 5.0, 520 mhz, 84208 kb Type 1 will happily proceed through a large batch db operation (initiated) by the app, by Type 2 will consistently begin c-r-a-w-l-i-n-g (for several to many cycles) at around the 200 cycle mark. As several points it will begin running normally and then crawl again. The app does several db op's (inserts, updates and selects, no deletes). To simplify my situation, I've built a small test app which essentially does this: command_s.CommandText = "select dvr from vr where vid = 2211250"; command_u.CommandText = "update pvr set LocationID=81 where Status='OK' and vri = 27861"; while(going) { command_s.ExecuteScalar(); command_u.ExecuteNonQuery(); } and set it off running on the two units side by side. Sure enough, the slower (400 mhz) unit is outpacing the faster (520 mhz) unit (it's about 5000 cycles ahead right now) and I can see noticable pauses on the 520 mhz unit. What is causing this?

  I've got code that looks like it should be correct based on what I can find, but the spewed output doesn't indicate that it's using FastInfoset. My understanding is the Accept should indicate it can accept Fastinfoset and the response would actually use it, meaning it's not text/xml as the response type. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? • Comparing two Objects which implement the same interface for equality / equivalence - Design help

  Hi All, I have an interface and two objects implementing that interface, massively simplied; public interface MyInterface { public int getId(); public int getName(); ... } public class A implements MyInterface { ... } public class B implements MyInterface { ... } We are migrating from using one implementation to the other but I need to check that the objects of type B that are generated are equivalent to those of type A. Specifically I mean that for all of the interface methods an object of Type A and Type B will return the same value (I'm just checking my code for generating this objects is correct). How would you go about this? Map<String, MyInterface> oldGeneratedObjects = getOldGeneratedObjects(); Map<String, MyInterface> newGeneratedObjects = getNewGeneratedObjects(); // TODO: Establish that for each Key the Values in the two maps return equivalent values. I'm looking for good coding practices and style here. I appreciate that I could just iterate through one key set pulling out both objects which should be equivalent and then just call all the methods and compare, I'm just thinking there may be a cleaner, more extensible way and I'm interested to learn what options there might be. • How do I get Spotlight attributes to display in the get info window?

  I have created a spotlight importer for comic files. The attributes are successfully imported and searchable. The one thing that remains is getting the attributes to display in a file's get info window. It seems that this should be a simple matter of editing the schema.xml file so the attributes are nested inside displayattrs tags. Unfortunately this does not seem to be working. I simplified the plugin for testing.
