• Colour output piped to less

  Operating system: Mac OS 10.6.2 I'd like to be able to see colour output when piping certain commands through less. Two examples: I've got ls aliased to ls --color=auto, so I'd like to be able to see colour when I do this: ls -l | less I've also got the color extension turned on in Mercurial, so I'd like to see colour output from: hg diff | less and hg st | less After some googling, it seems like some versions of less support either -r or -R to make this work, but no dice for me. I can't see anything in the man page that looks like what I need. (-r or -R SEEM to be the right options, but again, they don't seem to work)

• Passing empty list as parameter to JPA query throws error

  If I pass an empty list into a JPA query, I get an error. For example: List<Municipality> municipalities = myDao.findAll(); // returns empty list em.createQuery("SELECT p FROM Profile p JOIN p.municipality m WHERE m IN (:municipalities)") .setParameter("municipalities", municipalities) .getResultList(); Because the list is empty, Hibernate generates this in SQL as "IN ()", which gives me error with Hypersonic database. There is a ticket for this in Hibernate issue tracking but there are not many comments/activity there. I don't know about support in other ORM products or in JPA spec either. I don't like the idea of having to manually check for null objects and empty lists every time. Is there some commonly known approach/extension to this? How do you handle these situations?

• CSS : overflow : auto will not work under FireFox 3.6.2

  Hello everyone: This is a CSS related question, I got one good answer from my previous question, which suggested to use some CSS code like overflow:auto together with a fixed height container. And here is my actual implementation : on uni server Please follow the instructions on screen and buy more than 4 kinds of tickets. If you are using IE8, Opera, Safari, Chrome, you would notice that the lower right corner of the page now has a vertical scroll bar, which scrolls the content inside it and prevent it from overflowing. That's what I want to have in this section. Now the problem is, this would not do in FireFox 3.6.2. Am I doing something not compliant to the CSS standard or FireFox has its own way of overflow control? You can inspect the elements on screen, and all controlling functions are done in one javascript using jQuery. All CSS code are kept in a separated file as well. According to the professor, FireFox would be the target browser, although the version was set to 2.0...

• Webservice won't accept JSON requests

  Hi, The main issue is that I cannot run a webservice that accepts requests in JSON format. I keep getting a 500 Server error stating that the "request format is invalid." My ASP.NET AJAX extensions are installed. My server is running Plesk Control Panel 8.6 which is undoubtedly causing these problems. The default handler for this specified extension is shown in the web.config like so: For my applications webservice to handle JSON it needs to have this reference: <add name="ScriptHandlerFactory" verb="*" path="*.asmx" preCondition="integratedMode" type="System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptHandlerFactory, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/> Plesk is not allowing the request to be handled properly. I need to know the correct http directive(s) to put into the web.config to properly handle JSON webservices. I tried posting to the Plesk forum two days ago but no response yet. Any insight would be great =)

• Why has Javascript been (mostly) only a browser-side technology for more than 10 years?

  Recently there is a lot of projects that pushes Javascript into other directions: as a general purpose scripting language (GLUEScript, Rhino), as an extension language (QTScript, Adobe Reader, OO Macros), Widgets (Yahoo Widgets, MS Gadgets, Dashboard), and even server-side JS & web frameworks (CommonJS, Helma, Phobos, V8cgi), which seems obvious since it is already a language widely used for web development. But wait, everything is so new and nothing is really mature. However JS is around for almost 15 years, being as powerfull as any other scripting languages, being standardised by the ECMA, and being a mandatory technology for web development. Why did it take so much time to gain acceptance into other domains than web browsers?

  In my asp.net web app, I create a popup window with a button. When that button is clicked, I want to set the value of an asp:TextBox (id=TextBox1) contained in the parent window. However, it doesn't work like all the examples I've read indicate. I've tried the following lines of code in my javascript onclick handler: window.opener.document.getElementById('<%= TextBox1.ClientID %').value = "abc"; window.opener.document.getElementById("TextBox1").value = "abc"; window.opener.document.getElementById("ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_TextBox1").value = "abc"; Only example 3 works. All the stuff I've read indicates that #1 is the preferred method, but I can't seem to make it work at all. Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've tried this in Firefox, Chrome and IE. • WinForms: How do I simulate button behavior on an image?

  I have an extension of the winforms TabControl, it's draws an X on each tab to allow the user to close the tab. How can I similate button look&feel on that image? It's not a button, it's not even an image control. It's just been drawn there. Is there a way to draw an inset border on MouseDown and Raised on MouseUp? Would I be better off generating another image, for the "inset" phase? anyone done this before?   hi I have a joomla project. In this the text editor is tiny mace. But there is no option to upload a pdf file. So I want to implement Ck editor or fck editor instead of tiny mce. I have downloaded ck editor and install as usual way (admin side -extension-install- uninstall section) and disabled the tiny mce in Plugin Manager. But I can't show the editor; I think I am in wrong way. Does any one have any idea? Please help me.

• Renaming and Moving Files in Bash or Perl

  HI, I'm completely new to Bash and StackOverflow. I need to move a set of files (all contained in the same folder) to a target folder where files with the same name could already exist. In case a specific file exists, I need to rename the file before moving it, by appending for example an incremental integer to the file name. The extensions should be preserved (in other words, that appended incremental integer should go before the extension). The file names could contain dots in the middle. Originally, I was thinking about comparing the two folders to have a list of the existing files (I did this with "comm"), but then I got a bit stuck. I think I'm just trying to do things in the most complicated possible way. Any hint to do this in the "bash way"? It's OK if it is done in a script other than bash script.

• Very slow remote page load performance in QtWebKit (Windows)

  I get very slow load times on QtWebKit on Windows 7, through ADSL. I am using the Qt Demo Browser, on a Core2 Quad, 64 bit Windows 7, 4GB ram, 2gb processor. through a VPN. Simplest example: google search page takes ~18 seconds to load, compared to 2.5 on Chrome (cash cleared). On larger pages, with scripts etc. it is worse. I tried Qt 4.6 and also the Qt 4.7 beta, but don't see any difference. I see the same results with Arora browser. Are there any settings, or patches that can be applied to fix this? Thanks

• How to install ferret gem on Windows 7 ?

  Hi, I was trying to run an OpenSource project which requires ferret to be installed. While installing it using gem install ferret, it's giving this error - Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing ferret: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. C:/Ruby/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile nmake 'nmake' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.11.6 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.11.6/ext/gem_make.out So, I tried installing nmake (nmake15.exe), but the one I could find. It does not installs on Windows 7.Please help. A quick search of stack-overflow told me I need to use something called a background worker. • Safari Jquery Dialog and Ckeditor

  Hi I am using a CKEditor in a Jquery Dialog... and in Safari the first time it loads it works but each subsequent time it is blank and no buttons or anything else works in the ckeditor... • Div that should take up the "rest of the page" expands beyond the page in ie.

  Okay, this is REALLY starting to bug me... This page works fine in both Chrome and Firefox. www.bloggan.tk But if it's opened in internet-explorer it always expands beyond the page and introduces the scrollbar no matter what the resolution of the browser is. I have NO idea what change in the html it was that cause this... Here's the blogger-template-html-source I'd REALLY appreciate if someone could help me with this. Thanks in advance! Edit: I've "solved" it for IE using javascript, but that's only temporary (i hope). The version without javascript can be seen here, so that you still will be able to know what I'm talking about. • Current state of client-side XSLT

  Last I heard, Blizzard was one of the few companies to put client-side XSLT into practice (2008). Is this still the case in 2011, or are more people now exploring this technique in production?  It seems that modern browsers (IE9, FF4, Chrome) and client processing power are primed to exploit this standard for tangible savings in server CPU power and bandwidth on large scale properties. Am I missing something? The negative aspects I'm aware of include * additional rendering time * additional assets required on uncached page load * additional layer of complexity * noticably less developer experience than server-side template techniques The benefits I perceive include * distributed template composition (offloaded on the client) * caching of common template fragments offloaded on the client * logical separation of document structure and data * well-documented web standard supported by all modern browsers Finally, although I know it's impossible to predict the future, I am curious to know opinions on whether or not client-side XSLT's day will come. With interest in HTML5 driving users to upgrade their browsers and developers to explore new techniques, I would say yes. How about you? Thanks in advance, Casey

• Is OO design's strength in semantics or encapsulation?

  Object-oriented design (OOD) combines data and its methods. This, as far as I can see, achieves two great things: it provides encapsulation (so I don't care what data there is, only how I get values I want) and semantics (it relates the data together with names, and its methods consistently use the data as originally intended). So where does OOD's strength lie? In constrast, functional programming attributes the richness to the verbs rather than the nouns, and so both encapsulation and semantics are provided by the methods rather than the data structures. I work with a system that is on the functional end of the spectrum, and continually long for the semantics and encapsulation of OO. But I can see that OO's encapsulation can be a barrier to flexible extension of an object. So at the moment, I can see the semantics as a greater strength. Or is encapsulation the key to all worthwhile code?

  I need to implement a horizontal scrollable timeline. I've drawn the timeline/grids/rulers etc. I just need to catch mousewheel up/down to scroll the timeline (backward - past/forward - future). First I need to catch the event: but nothing I've found seems to work. Need browser support only for chrome/firefox (latest versions). • Get the XPath to an XElement?

  I've got an XElement deep within a document. Given the XElement (and XDocument?), is there an extension method to get its full (i.e. absolute, e.g. /root/item/element/child) XPath? E.g. myXElement.GetXPath()? EDIT: Okay, looks like I overlooked something very important. Whoops! The index of the element needs to be taken into account. • Adding barcodes to pdfs

  is there any way to do something like a mail merge, where the data (9-15 chars long) is converted to a barcode? im using trying to use openoffice's code128 for calc, but for some reason, every 10 strings, the barcode goes crazy, and the ascii tells me to register at the site where the extension came from, which i dont want to do i also found one for oodraw, but that requires the values to be inputted manually. since im not familiar with the macros, i can't write something that will do it automatically what im trying to do is: take an old pdf (only 1 page) covert it to word or picture or something add a function/macro/whatever to show a barcode (whether or not the barcode shows in this file, i dont care), given a string from excel data reconvert to separate pdfs or some other way that adds barcodes to pdfs all other free programs i have found do not do this nicely, and since im not really a pdf person, im not going to buy random programs. i just need this done for one large batch of data
