• Fixing Broken Links to Entries on This Blog

  I just found out that some built in redirects that were in place on the Oracle Blogging platform were removed, and as a result there is a good chance that if you were directed to an entry on this blog that is a bit older you'll get a 404 error. Luckily there is a simple URL hack that you can use to fix this - switch the "year/month" part for "entry" and then remove the ".html" from the URL. So for example instead of :  https://blogs.oracle.com/shay/2010/10/passing_parameters_to_adf_appl.html use: https://blogs.oracle.com/shay/entry/passing_parameters_to_adf_appl I fixed the links on my "Archives" page so you can also look for the entry by title there. Sorry for any inconvenience.

• How can I tweak this split-tar-gz-archive script?

  I came across this shell script that can be used to split an entire directory across multiple compressed files. I am interested in making a minor tweak to this script. Lets say I have n GB of files in a directory. I do not want the contents of a particular folder to be split across multiple tar files but inside the same file. I want the n MB folder to be fit within a single compressed file and the remaining (n GB -n MB) split across multiple files. I am not sure whether it is possible with this script. I was looking forward to some suggestions. Though the script has been well documented, it is quite complex to understand for me

• Convert Docx or Odt to Pdf

  Hi there, I need to find a way to convert docx or odt files to pdf on a linux web server. Therefore I'm not willing to install openoffice.org for obvious reasons. I've tried Google but it failed for me, so I'm here :-) I can't imagine there's no other solution to this problem than to install a huge chunk of binaries given that a) there are (or at least should be) lot's of packages which can read docx or at least odt and b) there are as many packages which can write pdf files What am I missing here? scratching head Regards, luxifer ps edit: I don't want to use a web service - neither free or paid edit 2: at this point it would also help to convert the docx back to doc so I could use wvpdf to generate the pdf... edit 3: of course it would also help if i could do search and replace on a doc file in the first place; or xps for that matter

• JavaOne Latin America Opening Keynotes

  Originally published on blogs.oracle.com/javaone It was a great first day at JavaOne Brazil, which included the Java Strategy and Java Technical keynotes. Henrik Stahl, Senior Director, Product Management for Java opened the keynotes by saying that this is the third year for JavaOne Latin America. He explained, "You know what they say, the first time doesn't count, the second time is a habit and the third time it's a tradition!" He mentioned that he was thrilled that this is largest JavaOne in Brazil to date, and he wants next year to be larger. He said that Oracle knows Latin America is an important hub for development.  "We continually come back to Latin America because of the dedication the community has with driving the continued innovation for Java," he said. Stahl explained that Oracle and the Java community must continue to innovate and Make the Future Java together. The success of Java depends on three important factors: technological innovation, Oracle as a strong steward of Java, and community participation. "The Latin American Java Community (especially in Brazil) is a shining example of how to be positive contributor to Java," Stahl said. Next, George Saab, VP software dev, Java Platform Group at Oracle, discussed some of the recent and upcoming changes to Java. "In addition to the incremental improvements to Java 7, we have also increased the set of platforms supported by Oracle from Linux, Windows, and Solaris to now also include Mac OS X and Linux/ARM for ARM-based PCs such as the Raspberry Pi and emerging ARM based microservers."  Saab announced that EA builds for Linux ARM Hard Float ABI will be available by the end of the year.  Staffan Friberg, Product Manager, Java Platform Group, provided an overview of some of the language coming in Java 8, including Lambda, remove of PermGen, improved data and time APIs and improved security, Java 8 development is moving along. He reminded the audience that they can go to OpenJDK to see this development being done in real-time, and that there are weekly early access builds of OracleJDK 8 that developers can download and try today. Judson Althoff, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Alliances and Channels and Embedded Sales, was invited to the stage, and the audience was told that "even though he is wearing a suit, he is still pretty technical." Althoff started off with a bang: "The Internet of Things is on a collision course with big data and this is a huge opportunity for developers."  For example, Althoff said, today cars are more a data device than a mechanical device. A car embedded with sensors for fuel efficiency, temperature, tire pressure, etc. can generate a petabyte of data A DAY. There are similar examples in healthcare (patient monitoring and privacy requirements creates a complex data problem) and transportation management (sending a package around the world with sensors for humidity, temperature and light). Althoff then brought on stage representatives from three companies that are successful with Java today, first Axel Hansmann, VP Strategy & Marketing Communications, Cinterion. Mr. Hansmann explained that Cinterion, a market leader in Latin America, enables M2M services with Java. At JavaOne San Francisco, Cinterion launched the EHS5, the smallest 3g solderable module, with Java installed on it. This provides Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with a cost effective, flexible platform for bringing advanced M2M technology to market.Next, Steve Nelson, Director of Marketing for the Americas, at Freescale explained that Freescale is #1 in Embedded Processors in Wired and Wireless Communications, and #1 in Automotive Semiconductors in the Americas. He said that Java provides a mature, proven platform that is uniquely suited to meet the requirements of almost any type of embedded device. He encouraged University students to get involved in the Freescale Cup, a global competition where student teams build, program, and race a model car around a track for speed.Roberto Franco, SBTVD Forum President, SBTVD, talked about Ginga, a Java-based standard for television in Brazil. He said there are 4 million Ginga TV sets in Brazil, and they expect over 20 million TV sets to be sold by the end of 2014. Ginga is also being adopted in other 11 countries in Latin America. Ginga brings interactive services not only at TV set, but also on other devices such as tablets,  PCs or smartphones, as the main or second screen. "Interactive services is already a reality," he said, ' but in a near future, we foresee interactivity enhanced TV content, convergence with OTT services and a big participation from the audience,  all integrated on TV, tablets, smartphones and second screen devices."Before he left the stage, Nandini Ramani thanked Judson for being part of the Java community and invited him to the next Geek Bike Ride in Brazil. She presented him an official geek bike ride jersey.For the Technical Keynote, a "blue screen of death" appeared. With mock concern, Stephin Chin asked the rest of the presenters if they could go on without slides. What followed was a interesting collection of demos, including JavaFX on a tablet, a look at Project Easel in NetBeans, and even Simon Ritter controlling legos with his brainwaves! • gkSudo fails with critical error

  I am trying to run gkSudo. This is my second day as a linux user. Yesterday I could do gksudo gedit and input my root password fine. Today, when i run that, the GUI comes up and ask's for my password, however then the program fails to run and all I get is: (gksudo:3262): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_str_has_prefix: assertion `str != NULL' failed I cannot sudo, I cannot su, i can't do anything. I am trying to add myself to the sudoers file but i can't even view it without being root. What can I do?

• 'sudo su -' vs 'sudo -i' vs 'sudo /bin/bash' - when does it matter which is used, or does it matter at all?

  When I'm doing something that requires root be typed in dozens of times in a row, I prefer to switch my session to a root session. In the various tutorials and instructions I have used on the Internet, I see sudo su, sudo su -, sudo -i and sudo /bin/bash being used to open a root session, but I'm not clear on the difference between these and when or if that difference matters. Can someone clear this up for me?

• Terminal stops working after closing a program window started from the Terminal

  System: I have XUbuntu 12.04 64bit and run Terminal 0.4.8 (Xfce Terminal Emulator). Problem: My Terminal always stops to accept any input after I close a program window started from the Terminal. Details: For example, I start leafpad, (or geany, tkdiff etc) from the terminal. I close the window after finishing my job by either clicking on the close button or using ctrl-w. Then when I go back to the terminal, it does not accept any input any more. Workaround: When this happens, I have to click on any other window (giving it the focus) and go back to Terminal again. Usually this causes the Terminal to starts to accept input again. So I always have to do a alt-tab, shift-alt-tab after I close a program started from Terminal. This is very annoying. Googled and did not find answer.

• Is it a bug or a task when something doesn't work, yet, in development process

  We usually have this dilemma in our team. Sometimes, in order to implement a task or a story we find out that the system must be in a specific state. For example, a specific system configuration has to be made beforehand. The task / story can be completed and it is working as specified on it with the proper configuration in place. Note that the configuration is not directly related with the task. Next, we have to create a new ... ??? ... something for the process of generating that configuration file. This is where the problems appear. Some say that it is a bug others say it is a task or an extra feature. So, where is the limit between bugs and tasks in the development phase? Should we even consider something a bug if all the tasks are working as stated in their definitions? Can a thing be considered a bug because one compares it to the current (unstable) state of the system? Short example: A feature requires configuring a communication service for a specific operation. In the process of the implementation the team discovers that the service requires the hostnames of the pears to be resolvable to an IP address. The team adds the hostnames to the DNS server (or hosts files) and continues implementing the required feature. After the initial feature is working, a question is risen. Should the sysadmin configure the DNS or hosts file or should our application do it automatically? An automatic solution is possible. So a decision is made to implement it. ... here start the discussions ... is this a bug or an extra feature / task? PS: I know that I mixed feature / task / story in the question. It is intentional. I am interested in separating bugs from the rest. Doesn't matter what the rest means in a particular case.

  A lot of people both internal to Oracle and customers keep asking about when should OWSM be used vs. OEG. Sometime back I posted Oracle's vision for layered SOA security Here is a quick summary: Use OWSM in Green Zone Use OEG in Red Zone (DMZ) If you need end-to-end security in which case they will want both OWSM and OEG. This is the topology I would recommend for most customers. If you need only Green Zone security - then use OWSM in conjunction with Oracle FMW products like SOA Suite, OSB, ADF, WLS, BI, etc both on the Client Side and Service Side (assuming you are using FMW technologies for both Clients and Services). If you need only Red Zone security - then use OEG on the Service Side. You can use OWSM for the Client Side if you are using FMW to build your clients.

I wanted to install rar password cracker for which I ran the .exe file which gave me following error : 'An error occurred while loading the archive'. Then I came to know that after installing wine, it will be possible to run my .exe file. But when I try to install wine from 'Ubuntu Software Center', i am getting another error saying 'Package dependencies cannot be resolved'. I am stuck now. Kindly help. I am using ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  I´m starting up a new project. It´s going to be a web browser game, developed using HTML5, JavaScript and CSS3. I have some general questions regarding the process of game developing. Should you know everything about your game by the time you start writing the first lines of code? I mean should you know all the details, all the things the player can and can not do? Basically: should you be done writing down new ideas before you begin coding? I understand the pre-production process is about documenting, doing research etc. What does that mean? • Download mirrors down after fresh installation

  I dont know whats the problem but it seems after every fresh installation of ubuntu in any device (have started noticing this problem since ubuntu 11.04) the connection to the software sources are down. I cannot download any software from either apt-get or software center. Also i cannot use the Universal Source for packages like chromium, etc. And then suddenly after a few days, the mirrors are back up again!! Its normal back again! I dont know what the problem is, but it happens every time. Is there any solution to this or we just have to wait for a few days till the mirrors are back again? (and I have also tried changing the download server, It doesn't helps!)

• Installed UBUNTU12.04 in Legacy, when changed to UEFI just runs the Terminal, not GUI

  Well, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 in a Gateway NE 522 with Windows 8. First, I had to install it in Legacy mode, because in UEFI it would not run the bootable USB. In the Legacy mode it runs perfect. Once done that with help of the "Boot-Repair" I changed it to the UEFI and disabled the secure boot mode. GRUB runs fine but when I run ubuntu I get the following message: microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd_fam16h.bin kvm: disabled by bios kvm: disabled by bios kvm: disabled by bios and then I just get access to the terminal. From there, I have already tried with reinstalling unity and gmd. When I try to install amd64-microcode the same error ocurrs ( microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd_fam16h.bin ) by the "updating the microcode on all online processors..." phase of the installation. Can somebody tell me how can I recover the graphical interphase of ubuntu from the terminal? Thanks a lot

  I have a bootable usb stick that has Ubuntu 12.10 on it, so I loaded it onto my computer which is semi old because it was really full and ubuntu is nice software when it works. And all went well until I booted it up the first time and it said that the Compiz thing was missing and I looked that up on the internet and I must have typed 20 different codes into terminal, and nothing seemed to work. Can you please help? I dont know what to do anymore and the only thing I can do it open up terminal because nothing pops up on the screen. Thanks :)

  Today Oracle announced the next release of it's Big Data Appliance, an engineered system composed of hardware and software targeting the efficient processing of big data.  The solution leverages 288 Intel cores running Cloudera's distribution of Apache Hadoop in 1.1 TB of main memory.  This monster helps companies acquire, organize, and analyze large volumes of structured and un-structured data. We will walk you through four key components of the product: Oracle Endeca Server—A highly scalable, search-analytical database that derives the data model based on the data presented to it, thereby reducing data modeling requirements. Studio—A highly interactive, component-based user interface for configuring advanced, yet intuitive, analytical applications. Integration Suite—Provides rapid unification and enrichment of diverse sources of information into a single integrated view. Extensible Value-Added Modules—Add-on modules that provide value quickly through configuration instead of custom coding. Topics covered will include Data Exploration with Endeca Information Discovery, Data Ingest, Project Lifecycle, Building an Endeca Server data model and advanced modeling techniques, and Working with Studio.
