• Post bacc CS certificate of Java Certification?

  I have a BS in biology, MS in Environmental Science, but I've been writing software in C++ and Java throughout grad school and a bit in my current job. I'd love to transition to a programming career. I've thought about getting what's called a "Post baccalaureate Certificate" or Java certification in lieu of another degree in CS. • Writing a Python extension in Go (golang)

  I currently use Cython to link C and Python, and get speedup in slow bits of python code. However, I'd like to use go routines to implement a really slow (and very parallelizable) bit of code, but it must be callable from python. (I've already seen this question) I'm (sort of) happy to go via C (or Cython) to set up data structures etc if necessary, but avoiding this extra layer would be good from a bug fix/avoidance point of view. What is the simplest way to do this without having to reinvent any wheels?

• apt-get commands pausing at 'Waiting for headers' [closed]

  I have a VM running Ubuntu Server 9.10 running a basic web server setup. Whenever I run an apt function it will pause for around 1 minute at 'Waiting for headers...'. It will eventually clear through and continue as normal but it is a bit of an annoyance. Everything else on the server seems to run fine. Any ideas?

• How does JSON compare to XML in terms of file size and serialisation/deserialisation time?

  I have an application that performs a little slow over the internet due to bandwidth reasons. I have enabled GZip which has improved download time by a significant amout, but I was also considering whether or not I could switch from XML to JSON in order to squeeze out that last bit of performance. Would using JSON make the message size significantly smaller, or just somewhat smaller? Let's say we're talking about 250kB of XML data (which compresses to 30kB).

  Using simple type like class A { public int X, Y; } with object intializers, one can write var a = new A { X=0, Y=0 }; But the following is also accepted by the compiler: var a = new A { X=0, Y=0, }; // notice the additional ',' Same for int[] v = new int[] { 1, 2, }; This looks a bit strange ... Did they forgot to reject the additional ',' in the compiler or is there a deeper meaning behind this?

• Is there any way to group edit buttons in MediaWiki?

  Is there any way to group the edit buttons displayed above the edit dialog in MediaWiki? By grouping, I mean like Word does (and even this editor) - you can add dividing lines to group them so that e.g. Bold and Italic are in one group, numbered list and bullet points in another. We've added lots of new buttons (in EditPage.php) and they are in a logical order, but at 30 buttons it is a bit overwhelming for some users.

  In Qt 4, by default, tabbing through a dialog changes the default button to be the button tabbed to. This makes tabbing look a bit ugly and distracting as extra redraws take place during tab navigation which distract from point of user focus. Is there a way to disable this Qt functionality and leave the default button unmodified by tab navigation?

• Drupal - special css file if JS is turned off?

  I'm building a Drupal theme up and want to know if there is a Drupalish way to add a css file only if the user has js turned off. This would ideally go in the theme.info file to keep it neat! Something like this would be ideal: conditional-stylesheets[if no javascript][all][] = nojs.css If this isn't possible then I'm going to keep all the css that needs JS out of the css files, and add it dynamically using JS but this seems a bit messy... Any ideas?

  Is there a way to break the line in a line-chart, if the gap between 2 values on the x axis is bigger then a given value? For example there are 20 values but the first 13 are close to each other on the x axis and should be connected with a line, but the other 7 are a bit far from these and should be connected with another line. • Is there a built-in class to handle encryption in C#?

  I need to encrypt bytecode to send over a connection to a webservice, preferably using a GUID as a key. I have done a bit of research and found several classes developed for a similar purpose, but haven't been able to turn up much that is built into the Windows libraries.
