• How do I force apt-get to install a package that will not install due to a bug introduced by Ubuntu 11.10?

  Ubuntu 11.10 separated out python-profiler from the Python standard library due to licensing philosophies. (According to what I could Google, correct me if I'm wrong.) This is an active bug since October for 11.10. I have Python 2.7.2 installed, so the dependency errors are wrong. 'apt-get check' does not resolve the problem. • How to get access to console to reset Cisco 3750?

  I acquired two Cisco 3750 switches from another part of my organization. I was able to complete the standard password/config reset procedure on one without any issues -- boot it, put it into express config mode, telnet in, reset the passwords, etc. The second one doesn't ever boot to the point where it displays anything on the console. When power cycled, the 'SYST' light flashes green a few times, then comes on a solid green and stays lit. None of the other lights ever flash or light up. Holding down the 'MODE' button for up to 30 seconds produces no noticeable effects. Nothing ever comes out on the console. Since I was able to configure the first one without any problems, I know my connectinon is good -- console port configured right, good cable, etc. Is this just a hardware problem with the switch? Is there any way I can recover from this and get the switch back into a state where I can configure it?

• Designing generic render/graphics component in C++?

  I'm trying to learn more about Component Entity systems. So I decided to write a Tetris clone. I'm using the "style" of component-entity system where the Entity is just a bag of Components, the Components are just data, a Node is a set of Components needed to accomplish something, and a System is a set of methods that operates on a Node. All of my components inherit from a basic IComponent interface. I'm trying to figure out how to design the Render/Graphics/Drawable Components. Originally, I was going to use SFML, and everything was going to be good. However, as this is an experimental system, I got the idea of being able to change out the render library at will. I thought that since the Rendering would be fairly componentized, this should be doable. However, I'm having problems figuring out how I would design a common Interface for the different types of Render Components. Should I be using C++ Template types? It seems that having the RenderComponent somehow return it's own mesh/sprite/whatever to the RenderSystem would be the simplest, but would be difficult to generalize. However, letting the RenderComponent just hold on to data about what it would render would make it hard to re-use this component for different renderable objects (background, falling piece, field of already fallen blocks, etc). I realize this is fairly over-engineered for a regular Tetris clone, but I'm trying to learn about component entity systems and making interchangeable components. It's just that rendering seems to be the hardest to split out for me.

• dpkg error when using apt-get install

  I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 from 12.04 and every time I use apt-get install for any package it ends with a bunch of errors about processing some of my latex packages. Including a snippet below: Sometimes, not accepting conffile updates in /etc/texmf/updmap.d causes updmap-sys to fail. Please check for files with extension .dpkg-dist or .ucf-dist in this directory dpkg: error processing package tex-common (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of lmodern: lmodern depends on tex-common (>= 3); however: Package tex-common is not configured yet. • openVPN Mac(Tunnelblick) all traffic over vpn

  Hello@all, the problem is that we want to use openVPN here as default VPN Server. Now we have the same problem like everytime. On Windows all works fine but on Mac we have problems with the routing. When you are logged on to the network all you internet traffic goes through the vpn connection. We have set routes for this in the Serverconfig but they have no effect on the target system. Is here anybody who have a solution for this? thx for you help

• Need advice to choose correct wi-fi drivers for Dell Vostro 3560

  I'm having problems with my Dell notebook's Wi-Fi, it can't see some of the available access points, despite they are close and I used to be connected to them yesterday. Other notebooks and my phone can see them. I believe it's a driver issue, since after installing system I haven't downloaded any network drivers. • How do you encode Algebraic Data Types in a C#- or Java-like language?

  There are some problems which are easily solved by Algebraic Data Types, for example a List type can be very succinctly expressed as: data ConsList a = Empty | ConsCell a (ConsList a) consmap f Empty = Empty consmap f (ConsCell a b) = ConsCell (f a) (consmap f b) l = ConsCell 1 (ConsCell 2 (ConsCell 3 Empty)) consmap (+1) l This particular example is in Haskell, but it would be similar in other languages with native support for Algebraic Data Types. It turns out that there is an obvious mapping to OO-style subtyping: the datatype becomes an abstract base class and every data constructor becomes a concrete subclass. • Lotus Notes "Format painter" or Quick access to fonts.

  I got Lotus Notes 7.0.3 at my job and I miss the "format painter" to copy the style in my mails. Does it exist? If not, the biggest problems I got are when I paste text form another program. The style is imported and I don't like that. I got to search for the "Default sans serif" font (witch is somewhere in the middle of the font list, another annoying thing). Basically, I use "Default sans serif" for text and "Default Monospace" for code. Is there a way to put them at the top of the font list of to get a quick access to them, or maybe in a toolbar or something?

• Options for PCI-DSS on AWS - file integrity monitoring and intrusion detection

  I need to deploy some file integrity monitoring and intrusion detections software on AWS instances. I really wanted to use OSSEC, however it does not work well in an environment where servers can auto deploy and shut down based on load, because it requires server managed keys to be generated. Including the agent in the AMI will not allow monitoring as soon as it comes up because of that. There are many options out there, and several are listed in other posts on this site, however none that I've seen so far deal with the unique problems inherent in AWS or cloud based deployments in general. Can anyone point me at some products, preferably open source, that we might use to cover those portions of PCI DSS that require this software? Has anyone else achieved this on AWS?

• How to create an UEFI bootable USB stick from an ISO

  I have an ISO image of my backup solution's recovery cd. When I burn the image to a CD-ROM, I can boot from it in UEFI or normal mode without problems. Unfortunately, this is no solution for my laptop, as it does not have an optical drive. Thus, I tried to create a bootable USB stick that can also boot in UEFI mode, but so far I have not been successful (note that the laptop has UEFI and boots Windows 7 in UEFI mode). So my question is, if anyone knows how I can get said ISO on my USB stick so that it boots as if I would use a CD-ROM?

• SMART says disk failure is imminent due to bad blocks, what do I need to do?

  I have on my hard drive 2 OSes: Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows Vista (I keep it just because of school). Everything was OK on both OSes, but one day on Ubuntu I was getting awkward noises from my notebooks' hard drive and then everything stopped and I couldn't do anything. On Windows everything was OK. Every time I boot Ubuntu I can get 5 minutes normal run time, without problems. After that the hard drive sounds crazy and nothing works. I could run S.M.A.R.T tests from a older Ubuntu CD (10.04) from the GUI (Disk Utility, or something like that and from terminal). From the GUI, I got that the DISK FAILURE IS IMMINENT and I have ~700 bad blocks (or broken blocks, I had that test I while ago) on my HDD. From the terminal (I don't remember if it was fsck or a SMART test command) I got that the HDD will fail in under 24 hours. Since then it passed 2-3 weeks. I've tried "badblocks" but after 10 hours it was still running and I had to stop it. Now I have to use cygwin and other alternatives for my Linux apps on Windows. How can I separate the bad blocks from Ubuntu so it wouldn't use them? Please help.

  I have a problem with my Windows installation running very slow and my Windows folder being too large. I thought that the problems are related. My Windows folder is 17.4 GB I have 1807 folders totalling 2.4 GB that are prefaced with a $. My System32 folder is 1.55 GB My Microsoft.NET folder is 654 MB – I don't know what if any programs I have that are using it. My Service Pack folder is 568 MB. The Software Distribution folder is 536 MB The ie8updates folder is 380 MB. How can I reduce the size of these folders and could their size be why I am running do slow?

• ASUS K55VM Laptop unexpectedly shuts down

  I've read quite a few questions on SuperUser of people having laptop shutdown problems but mine is different. My laptop specs: Intel Core i7 3610QM (IvyBridge) NVIDIA GT630M 2GB and Intel GMA4000 8GB RAM Windows 7 64 Bit My laptop occasionally shuts down when playing FarCry 3. It's around 5 months old. I've played games like Crysis and it never shuts down unexpectedly. Since I experienced this shut down recently, I decided for GPU-Z to log the temperatures. The final log value at the time of shutdown were thus: GPU Core Clock [MHz] - 797.3 GPU Memory Clock [MHz] - 896.8 GPU Temperature [°C] - 89.0 GPU Load [%] - 99 Memory Controller Load [%] - 36 Video Engine Load [%] - 0 Memory Usage (Dedicated) [MB] - 535 Memory Usage (Dynamic) [MB] - 53 VDDC [V] - 1.0620 My drivers are up-to-date and I didn't encounter any BSODs at the time of shut down. It simply turns off.

  The Oracle Benelux User Group (OBUG) have given me an amazing opportunity to present a one day Optimizer workshop at their annual Connect Conference in Maastricht on April 24th. • My Macbook Pro wifi intermittently won't turn on sometimes after sleep, does anyone know how to solve this?

  Hello, My current-generation MacBook Pro 15" (10.6.5) intermittently has problems turning the wifi (airport) on. The usual symptom happens when I: Sleep the machine Open from sleep Wifi is off (the airport signal is blank) I click on airport icon-Turn Airport On, but nothing happens. I googled around a bit and found one recommended solution where I delete the "automatic" location and create a new one and enable the wifi, or I delete the "AirPort" from the location and add it back, but neither of these resolve the problem. I also called AppleCare and they had me delete /Library/SystemConfiguration and restart, but that hasn't solved the problem. I have to reboot, which is very painful. Does anyone have any idea of how to solve this?

If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

• Most effective way to do daily standup meeting when a few people are remote

  I am a software developer in a small team of seven. We are not an Agile (with a big 'A') team but are experimenting with some aspects of agile. One of these is the daily "standup" meeting. The difficulty here is that for two days of the week we have at least one person working from home so the full team isn't available in the same room. What is the best way to carry out a daily standup in this situation? Some facts that may be relevant: We all work in a single open plan room. We use Skype in our company. We don't have any video conferencing capability. We all work the same hours so there are no timezone complexities involved. The development manager is one of the people who works from home one day a week. Things we have tried: Conference call using Skype: This is tricky for those in the office because you can hear people speak in the room and then a split second later through the headset. This can e very distracting. Conference phone: Awful experience. Hard to get them to work and poor quality audio. Text-based updates using Skype. This is not as engaging and is no different than just firing off a status email in the morning. I have seen other questions about remote collaboration but they are mainly about completely remote teams and/or teams that span multiple time zones. We are not affected by either of these problems. What can we do to make our standup meetings better in these circumstances?

• Monitor turns off about 1 second after turning it on

  Hi all! I have a hardware issue with some of the LCD monitors we have in our office. My problems is not related to video cards or anything else with the computer itself. I have 2 Dell 17" LCD screens that goes off (blank) after 1 or 2 seconds. The light remains green so it's not idling or sleeping. Just this morning, I had to replace one that goes off on 2 workstations and also on my laptop. Nothing to do with it. I tried the VGA and DVI connection w/out luck. I strongly think that this is something with a capacitor or something inside the screen but I can't figure out what it is... Is anybody heard of that kind of issue before? Regards, David.

  Google has an Easter egg that draws 3D graph but when I tried it out on chrome it complained about no WebGL support. I've also tested it on Firefox whose WebGL support was enabled but ended up with the same problem. Thus, I suspect it's an issue of my GPU.   I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit client as Dom0 and Xen. I am having problems getting java up and running. Java itself seems to work fine, however I get strange errors, for example when I start javaws. I tried different versions and always get the same errors. I tried openjdk 1.6 and 1.7 as well as sunjava6 and 7. I alway get an error in the same lib All other applications are working fine, so it seems ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 is working fine. Any hints what could be wrong? • Is it a bad idea to release software on the night before Christmas?

  We're about to go live with a new version of our system. It's getting really close to Christmas. I work in a very small company. Everyone will be on leave or sporadically available over the next week or so. I've argued with my boss that this is very risky and that we should go live in the new year when everyone is back and when we can provide full support. He is unflinching - he argues that we need to go live sooner - so that we can get new users and more revenue which we need. The number of new users will be minor amount over the next week or so. There has been a decent amount of system testing performed on the system. However a new live system, in my experience, needs a lot of care and attention in the first few days. Am I being pessimistic or realistic? Update - January: The system did not go live over Christmas. Ongoing system testing revealed various problems. So no support issues to deal with. Still preparing for release...

Initially, the intermediate certificates would stop working and we could repair the problem by reinstalling all of them after the reboot (annoying, but not the end of the world). Unfortunately, this is no longer working. The certificate chain has been doublechecked by several tools and people with decent knowledge but no one has been able to identify the cause of the problem. The bindings in IIS have been checked as well The cert itself is also still valid. NOTE 1: I have seen THIS question which seems to be very similar, but there is no satisfactory answer in that post and it's a year old so not likely to get one any time soon.
