• SSL Certificate Stops Working after Server Reboot on IIS7, W2K8

  We recently upgraded from W2K3/IIS6 to W2K8/IIS7 and have been having problems with our SSL Certificate (Thawte 123 SSL certificate) ceasing to work after rebooting. Initially, the intermediate certificates would stop working and we could repair the problem by reinstalling all of them after the reboot (annoying, but not the end of the world). Unfortunately, this is no longer working. The certificate chain has been doublechecked by several tools and people with decent knowledge but no one has been able to identify the cause of the problem. The bindings in IIS have been checked as well The cert itself is also still valid. NOTE 1: I have seen THIS question which seems to be very similar, but there is no satisfactory answer in that post and it's a year old so not likely to get one any time soon. NOTE 2: I'm asking this on behalf of a co-worker so won't be able to provide instant feedback to any questions/suggestions but I will pass it on. • Is it a bad idea to release software on the night before Christmas?

  We're about to go live with a new version of our system. It's getting really close to Christmas. I work in a very small company. Everyone will be on leave or sporadically available over the next week or so. I've argued with my boss that this is very risky and that we should go live in the new year when everyone is back and when we can provide full support. He is unflinching - he argues that we need to go live sooner - so that we can get new users and more revenue which we need. The number of new users will be minor amount over the next week or so. There has been a decent amount of system testing performed on the system. However a new live system, in my experience, needs a lot of care and attention in the first few days. Am I being pessimistic or realistic? Update - January: The system did not go live over Christmas. Ongoing system testing revealed various problems. So no support issues to deal with. Still preparing for release...

• javaws crashes, error in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit client as Dom0 and Xen. I am having problems getting java up and running. Java itself seems to work fine, however I get strange errors, for example when I start javaws. I tried different versions and always get the same errors. I tried openjdk 1.6 and 1.7 as well as sunjava6 and 7. I alway get an error in the same lib All other applications are working fine, so it seems ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 is working fine. Any hints what could be wrong? What to do against fork bombs and other shell scripting problems? • I want to version control my entire slice

  I'm renting a slice (i.e., a VPS) from Slicehost. I've a spent a day or two filling up /usr with my favorite packages, /etc with configs and init scripts, and so on. Now I want to: save this whole setup somewhere (e.g., to load onto another machine). see what changes I've made to which files revert changes, tag revisions, and all that other good version control stuff Saving a disk image gives me (1), but not (2) and (3). Using Subversion (svn import / svn://someotherhost) might give me all three, but I expect problems if I actually try to check a project out into / and maintain .svn directories in root-owned areas. And to load my setup onto a fresh slice, I'd need to install an svn client on it first. Is there a good way to do what I want to do?

• Floating point undesireable in highly critical code?

  Question 11 in the Software Quality section of "IEEE Computer Society Real-World Software Engineering Problems", Naveda, Seidman, lists fp computation as undesirable because "the accuracy of the computations cannot be guaranteed". This is in the context of computing acceleration for an emergency braking system for a high speed train. This thinking seems to be invoking possible errors in small differences between measurements of a moving object but small differences at slow speeds aren't a problem (or shouldn't be), small differences between two measurements at high speed are irrelevant - can there be a problem with small roundoff errors during deceleration for an emergency braking system? This problem has been observed with airplane braking systems resulting in hydroplaning but could this actually happen in the context of a high speed train? The concern about fp errors seems to not be well-founded in this context. Any insight? The fp is used for acceleration so perhaps the concern is inching over a speed limit? But fp should be just fine if they use a double in whatever implementation language. The actual problem in the text states: During the inspection of the code for the emergency braking system of a new high speed train (a highly critical, real-time application), the review team identifies several characteristics of the code. Which of these characteristics are generally viewed as undesirable? The code contains three recursive functions (well that one is obvious). The computation of acceleration uses floating point arithmetic. All other computations use integer arithmetic. The code contains one linked list that uses dynamic memory allocation (second obvious problem). All inputs are checked to determine that they are within expected bounds before they are used.

• Connected to internet but can't browse after trying to remove Covenant Eyes

  I recently got a MacBook Pro. It connects to ethernet\wifi and has internet but when I open Safari or Firefox, nothing happens. I get a timeout for all websites. I had Covenant Eyes on my Mac before and tried to remove it. My friends who work with computers have tried everything (ping, nslookup etc). Network diagnostics show no problems I can see I'm connected through ifconfig because I get an IP. I also get a response pinging www.google.gr. There are no proxies set in my Network preferences. Any ideas?

• Changing the RSS and Dynamic Views layout when using Blogger as a Podcast index

  I'm trying to set up a podcast service at present. This is just a 'spare time' task - so I wanted a quick, easy way to do it. To get this working: I've ripped (with owner permission) some YouTube content across to MP3 and hosted this content on Azure Blob Storage. I've posted blog posts - with linked mp3 content - inside a Blogger website. I've registered the RSS feed with iTunes This all seems to be working OK - http://dotnetmobilepodcast.blogspot.co.uk/ However, when it comes to a couple of final touches, then I'm hitting problems. RSS I would like to add iTunes metadata to the RSS feed. However, I can't find any way to do this inside the Blogger system. To workaround this I've tried using FeedBurner with its StreamCast plugin. However, the output from FeedBurner doesn't seem to be accepted by iTunes - e.g. http://feeds.feedburner.com/MobileAppCSharpPodcasts leads to this very unhelpful 11111 message: Is there any other way I can get this iTunes metadata content into the Blogger RSS feed - e.g. maybe an alternative service or a Yahoo! Pipe? Showing the MP3 files in the Blog I'm trying to work out how to automatically display the linked enclosures inside the blog posts - do the blogger Dynamic Views don't seem to have any way of doing this? I've found the HTML in those views very difficult to follow. If necessary I can workaround this using manual entries into each blog post... but I'd prefer to do this programatically if I can.

• RGB to DVI adapter not working for Projector-to-PC

  We have a wall-mounted projector (dell 4320) with VGA In and the other end of the cable is RGB. We have an RGB to DVI-I adapter (w/ DIP switches) inorder to plug the cable into a PC (video card has 1 VGA and 1 DVI-I port). We had no problems until recently, when the PCs hard drive crashed. After re-imaging the PC, the computer no longer "sees" the projector (the computer doesn't detect the projector as a second monitor anymore). The PC is an older Dell with an after-market video card and runs win XP. I also tried it on a new HP box (win 7), but had to add a DVI-I to DVI-D adapter. Any ideas?

• Lexmark E240 printing issues

  I have Lexmark E240 laser printer. I have been using it with 12.04 (32bit) for 2 years with no significant issues. Since lexmark does not support this printer on linux, I used alternatives drivers that were suggested by the community, such as HP-lasterjet, E238, generic PS, etc. They all worked fine, more or less. After upgrading to 14.04 (64bit fresh install) I tried to configure the printer as before, but now I have problems. The test page is ok, but when printing, most of the times, the first page in the document will be printed very partially and in 300% zoom. Next page might be ok. If I turn off the printer and back on, the first page might be ok, but in the next print job, it will be broken again. I used all the above printer options. Same results. I did NOT install the lexmark drivers since they are intended for 12.04 and the package manager report that it is in "bad quality" (don't know why). Does anyone has any experience with this printer in 14.04 64bit ?

• Fix for poor hd playback for 11.04 upwards

  Hi guys ive seen loads of posts on this site about poor 720/1080p playback in recent ubuntu versions I had this problem and fixed it so I thought id share it with everyone.... 1 install mplayer 2 install smplayer frontend {in software center} 3 open smplayer 4 go to "OPTIONS" then "PREFRENCES" then "GENRAL" 5 if you have a nvidia card choose "OUTPUT DRIVER" and select "VDPAU" {for ATI or AMD choose xv (0 - ATI Radeon AVIVO video) I dont know if this will work as my card is nvidia but it should) 6 go to performance on the left hand side and set both local and streaming cache to 99999 (this may also fix dvd playback if you set that cache aswell} 7 check the box for "ALLOW HARD FRAME DROP" and set "LOOP FILTER" to skip only on HD 8 Set the "THREDS FOR DECODING OPTION TO THE NUMBER OF CORES YOUR CPU HAS IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CPU ADD UP ALL THE CORES FOR BEST PERFORMANCE" 9 Enjoy you HD movies again on ubuntu...... I have a pretty avrage machine heres my spec.... 2x Pentium 4 ht 3 ghz Stock dell power and motherboard GFORCE 310 HDMI 24 inch full HD tv as a monitor so any one with dule core cpu should have no problems getting this to work. hope this helps someone out.

• Windows XP not able to boot after loading isapnp.sys driver

  Hi When i power on my DELL Latitude E6400 laptop running on Windows XP SP3, i get a black screen and hangs after that. So I tried to boot through safe mode which hangs after loading the driver isapnp.sys. Doing a bit of googling i found out Windows XP not booting up including safe mode So I loaded my XP boot cd and tried Recovery Console. In the Recovery console, doing "dir" gives the error "an error occurred during directory enumeration". Then i tried chkdsk /p /r which gave "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" How can i fix these please. Thanks in advance.

• What's the best practice to do SOA exception handling?

  Here's some interesting debate going on between me and my colleague when coming to handle SOA exceptions: On one side, I support what Juval Lowy said in Programming WCF Services 3rd Edition: As stated at the beginning of this chapter, it is a common illusion that clients care about errors or have anything meaningful to do when they occur. Any attempt to bake such capabilities into the client creates an inordinate degree of coupling between the client and the object, raising serious design questions. How could the client possibly know more about the error than the service, unless it is tightly coupled to it? What if the error originated several layers below the service—should the client be coupled to those lowlevel layers? Should the client try the call again? How often and how frequently? Should the client inform the user of the error? Is there a user? By having all service exceptions be indistinguishable from one another, WCF decouples the client from the service. The less the client knows about what happened on the service side, the more decoupled the interaction will be. On the other side, here's what my colleague suggest: I believe it’s simply incorrect, as it does not align with best practices in building a service oriented architecture and it ignores the general idea that there are problems that users are able to recover from, such as not keying a value correctly. If we considered only systems exceptions, perhaps this idea holds, but systems exceptions are only part of the exception domain. User recoverable exceptions are the other part of the domain and are likely to happen on a regular basis. I believe the correct way to build a service oriented architecture is to map user recoverable situations to checked exceptions, then to marshall each checked exception back to the client as a unique exception that client application programmers are able to handle appropriately. Marshall all runtime exceptions back to the client as a system exception, along with the stack trace so that it is easy to troubleshoot the root cause. I'd like to know what you think about this? • Trouble migrating Joomla from Linux to Windows server

  I'm having some trouble migrating a Joomla website from a Linux server to a Windows server. The database came over fine, Besides that, all I've done is download all the files from the current site, and change configuration.php so the log and tmp directories show "./tmp/" and "./logs/" I keep having an error in the PHP log stating PHP Fatal error: Class 'JTable' not found I've downloaded the site multiple times now, and I'm convinced this is a configuration problem, and not a missing file problem. I've even tried installing a mod for backup on the linux box to try and migrate the site, but sadly the mod had problems installing. The new server is running IIS 7.5 on Windows Web Server. • SSISDB Analysis Script on Gist

  I've created two simple, yet very useful, script to extract some useful data to quickly monitor SSIS packages execution in SQL Server 2012 and after.get-ssis-execution-status  get-ssis-data-pumped-rows  I've started to use gist since it comes very handy, for this "quick'n'dirty" scripts and snippets, and you can find the above scripts and others (hopefully the number will increase over time...I plan to use gist to store all the code snippet I used to store in a dedicated folder on my machine) there.Now, back to the aforementioned scripts. The first one ("get-ssis-execution-status") returns a list of all executed and executing packages along with latest successful and running executions (so that on can have an idea of the expected run time)error messageswarning messages related to duplicate rows found in lookupsthe second one ("get-ssis-data-pumped-rows") returns information on DataFlows status. Here there's something interesting, IMHO. Nothing exceptional, let it be clear, but nonetheless useful: the script extract information on destinations and row sent to destinations right from the messages produced by the DataFlow component. This helps to quickly understand how many rows as been sent and where...without having to increase the logging level.Enjoy! PSI haven't tested it with SQL Server 2014, but AFAIK they should work without problems. Of course any feedback on this is welcome.

• Static IP Address on Ubuntu 12.04 Virtual Machine

  I've setup a VM running Ubuntu 12.04 specifically for local web development and am having some problems ensuring it has a static IP address. A static IP address is important as I'm using the IP address in my hosts file to assign a .local suffix to addresses used both in browser and to connect to the correct database on the VM. Currently, every time I connect to a new network or my VM is assigned a new IP address I need to reconfigure my whole environment which is becoming quite a pain. It also probably doesn't help that the default-lease-time on the Ubuntu VM is set to 1800 by default. At the moment I'm using VMWare Fusion and the Network Adapter is enabled and set to "Autodetect" under Bridged Networking. I've tried to set a static IP address within the dhcpd.conf using the code below: host ubuntu { hardware ethernet 00:50:56:35:0f:f1; fixed-address: 192.168.100.100; } The fixed-address that I've used is also outside the range specified in the subnet block (which in this case is 192.168.100.128 to 192.168.100.254). I've tried adding and removing the network adapter and restarting my Mac after each time to no avail. • Outlook items suddenly disapears from inbox after synchronization

  We had some disk problems on Exchange server. We had to fix the Exchange 2007 using eseutil. Everything works fine excpet of following problem with one e-mail account: All inbox messages of mentioned e-mail account are fully accessible through the OWA. When any user creates new Outlook profile (using .OST mode) and starts synchronizing, all inbox messages are visible in the Outlook's inbox folder untill the Inbox synchronizing is completed. Once the synchronizing progress bar reaches 100% (and the Outlook starts synchronizing Sent items or another folder), most of messages disappears from the inbox view of the Outlook. The .OST file size does not reduce. New mails (delivered after Exchange server crash) remains all in the inbox. There is no special view or filter applied in the Outlook. The problem has been reproduced on two different computers (Vista+Office2007, Win7+Office2010). We assume there is some problem on the Exchange server but we don't know how to fix it. Can anybody give us some advice?

• Looking for a small, light scene graph style abstraction lib for shader based OpenGL

  I'm looking for a 'lean and mean' c/c++ scene graph library for OpenGL that doesn't use any deprecated functionality. It should be cross platform (strictly speaking I just dev on Linux so no love lost if it doesn't work on Windows), and it should be possible to deploy to mobile targets (ie OpenGLES2, and no crazy mandatory dependencies that wouldn't port well to modern mobile frameworks like iOS, Android, etc), with a license that's compatible with closed source software (LGPL or more liberal). Specific nice-to-haves would be: Cameras and Viewers (trackball, fly-by, etc) Object transform hierarchies (if B is a child of A, and you move A, B has the same transform applied to it) Simple animation Scene optimization (frustum culling, use VBOs, minimize state changes, etc) Text I've played around with OpenSceneGraph a lot and it's pretty amazing for fixed function pipeline stuff, but I've had a few of problems using it with the programmable pipeline and after going through their mailing list, it seems several people have had similar issues (going back years). Kitware's VES looks neat (http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/VES), but VES + VTK is pretty heavy. VTK is also typically for analyzing scientific data and I've read that it's not that appropriate for a general use case (not that great at rendering a lot of objects on scene,etc) I'm currently looking at VisualizationLibrary (http://www.visualizationlibrary.org/documentation/pag_gallery.html) which looks like it offers some of the functionality I'd like, but it doesn't explicitly support mobile targets. Other solutions like Ogre, Horde3D, Irrlicht, etc tend to be full on game engines and that's not really what I'm looking for. I'd like some suggestions for other libraries that I may have missed... please note I'm not willing to roll my own solution from scratch.

• Languages on a resume: Is it better to put "C/C++" or "C, C++"?

  I'm graduating in a couple of weeks, and my resume (as expected) lists the languages that I've had experience with. Previously I've put "C/C++", however back then I didn't have that much experience with these two languages as I do now. Now that I've formally learned these two languages, it has become evident to me (and anyone who really knows these languages) that they are similar, and completely disimilar at the same time. Sure, most C code is compilable C++ code, but syntax and incorporation of library functions is pretty much where these similarities end. In most non-trivial problems, chances are that the desirable C++ solution will be different from the desirable C solution. My question: Will recruiters take note or care about whether you put "C/C++" as opposed to "C, C++"? Will they assume a lack of knowledge of the workings of either because of the inclusion of the first form, or perhaps see the inclusion of the second form as a potential "resume beefer" (listing them as 2 languages, instead of "one")? Furthermore, for jobs that you've applied to that were particularly interested in these two langauges, did the interview process include questions about the differences between C programming and C++ programming (so, about actual programming techniques, not only the extra paradigms in the latter)?

• How do I reattach to Ubuntu Server's 'do-release-upgrade' process?

  I accidentally pressed Ctrl+C during Ubuntu Server's do-release-upgrade process. I'd dropped to a shell to compare a .conf file in /etc/. When I pressed Ctrl-C, it asked whether I wanted to try to reattach to the upgrade process, but it failed to do so. So I quit, and now there's a hanging dpkg process which is holding onto the apt lock. This is a virtualised server with no GUI frontend... Is it possible to recover the upgrade process, or do I have to kill the dpkg process and start again? UPDATE:- AFAICT, there was no way to reattach to the upgrade process. However, it wasn't a disaster at all. I killed the hanging dpkg process, and then ran dpkg --configure -a. This walks you through reconfiguring all packages already installed on the system, tidying up any problems whilst it does so. After that, I used aptitude to upgrade the remaining packages, which had already been downloaded, but hadn't been installed or configured.

• A synergy alternative that just works?

  I have been using Synergy for a few days now on my Windows 7 desktop (as server) and Macbook (client). Unfortunately, it seems to be buggy - often, the keyboard would stop working on the Mac to the point of forcing me to use the Macbook's keyboard. There are other weird problems as well. Is there a better/proprietary alternative to Synergy? It should support both Windows and Mac. I'd be more than willing to pay for it if it would just work. Edit: How is VNC/TeamViewer supposed to help? I'm not looking to merely access a remote desktop, I only want to share the keyboard/mouse with multiple computers (mac, windows) retaining their own display.

  Hi all! Some days ago I had some problems with updates, and this ended up with a problem that I already solved in this question . The problem is that now I want to update again, but it seems that I cannot do it automatically, because when I use the update manager it gets stuck while configuring mysql-server 5.1, in the line : Configuring mysql-server 5.1 (5.1.41-3ubuntu12.10)... I have been looking for some solution but it seems hard because actually I don't know where to start, so any hints are appreciated. Thanks in advance! Alf.
