• Need Java Swing equivalent of "scrollIntoView" from Browser DOM

- by bgould
I have a JPanel with several levels of child components, also with a JScrollPane. I'm placing a focus listener on some of the child components to add some behavior to those components, but I would also like to have that component scroll into the JPanel's viewport when focus is gained. My question is, does anyone have a general purpose function to do this, similar to the browser DOM function "scrollIntoView"? I've tried muddling through this with various inputs to JComponent.scrollRectToVisible but I guess I haven't figured out the magic word. Thanks in advance.

• How does file creation work in Java

- by Ankur
I am trying to create a file using File newFile = new File("myFile"); However no file called "myFile" is created. This is within a Web application Project i.e. proper form to be pakaged as a WAR but I am calling it as part of a main method (just to see how this works). How can I make it so that a new file is created at a location relative to the current one i.e not have to put in an absolute path.

• Java regular expression: how to include '-'

- by changed
I am using this pattern and matching a string. String s = "//name:value /name:value"; if (s.matches("(//?\\s*\\w+:\\w+\\s*)+")) { // it fits } This works properly. But if I want to have a string like "/name-or-address:value/name-or-address:value" which has this '-' in second part, it doesn't work. I am using \w to match A-Za-z_, but how can I include - in that?

• Java blocking socket returning incomplete ByteBuffer

- by evandro-carrenho
I have a socketChannel configured as blocking, but when reading byte buffers of 5K from this socket, I get an incomplete buffer sometimes. ByteBuffer messageBody = ByteBuffer.allocate(5*1024); messageBody.mark(); messageBody.order(ByteOrder.BIG_ENDIAN); int msgByteCount = channel.read(messageBody); Ocasionally, messageBody is not completely filled and channel.read() does not return -1 or an exception, but the actual number of bytes read (which is less than 5k). Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

• java /TableModel of Objects/Update Object"

- by Tomás Ó Briain
I've a collection of Stock objects that I'm updating about 10/15 variables for in real-time. I'm accessing each Stock by its ID in the collection. I'm also trying to display this in a JTable and have implemented an AbstractTablemodel. It's not working too well. I've a RowMap that I add each ID to as Stocks are added to the TableModel. To update the prices and variables of all the stocks in the TableModel, I want to send a Stock object to an updateModel(Stock s) method. I can find the relevant row by searching the map, but how do I handle this nicely, so I don't have to start iterating through table columns and comparing the values of the cells to the variables of the object to see whether there are any differences?? Basically, i want to send a Stock object to the TableModel and update cells if there are changes and do nothing if there aren't. Any ideas about how to implement a TableModel that might do this? Any pointeres at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Java - problems with polymorphism

- by cc0
I have a book class, then a novel- and a science book class that extend the book class. I made an ArrayList using the book class, then inserted the novels and the science books into that. Now I'm trying to iterate through the ArrayList to count how many novels are there. How can I tell? Would love to see some examples of this! I've been at it for a while.

• Java replace all capturing groups

- by Don
Hi, If I have a regex with a capturing group, e.g. foo(g.*f). If I match this against a string and want to replace the first capturing group in all matches with baz so that foog___f blah foog________f is converted to: foobaz blah foobaz There doesn't appear to be any easy way to do this using the standard libraries, because the Matcher.replaceAll() method will only replace all matches of the entire pattern, am I missing something? Obviously I can just iterate through the matches, store the start and end index of each capturing group, then go back and replace them, but is there an easier way? Thanks, Don

• synchronized in java - Proper use

- by ZoharYosef
I'm building a simple program to use in multi processes (Threads). My question is more to understand - when I have to use a reserved word synchronized? Do I need to use this word in any method that affects the bone variables? I know I can put it on any method that is not static, but I want to understand more. thank you! here is the code: public class Container { // *** data members *** public static final int INIT_SIZE=10; // the first (init) size of the set. public static final int RESCALE=10; // the re-scale factor of this set. private int _sp=0; public Object[] _data; /************ Constructors ************/ public Container(){ _sp=0; _data = new Object[INIT_SIZE]; } public Container(Container other) { // copy constructor this(); for(int i=0;i<other.size();i++) this.add(other.at(i)); } /** return true is this collection is empty, else return false. */ public synchronized boolean isEmpty() {return _sp==0;} /** add an Object to this set */ public synchronized void add (Object p){ if (_sp==_data.length) rescale(RESCALE); _data[_sp] = p; // shellow copy semantic. _sp++; } /** returns the actual amount of Objects contained in this collection */ public synchronized int size() {return _sp;} /** returns true if this container contains an element which is equals to ob */ public synchronized boolean isMember(Object ob) { return get(ob)!=-1; } /** return the index of the first object which equals ob, if none returns -1 */ public synchronized int get(Object ob) { int ans=-1; for(int i=0;i<size();i=i+1) if(at(i).equals(ob)) return i; return ans; } /** returns the element located at the ind place in this container (null if out of range) */ public synchronized Object at(int p){ if (p>=0 && p<size()) return _data[p]; else return null; }

• Connection and Collection Interfaces in Java

- by Bhupi
Which class implements all the Connection Interfaces which are in javax.microedition.io package and how? And in the same way which class implements the some of Collection interfaces like Iterator interface. I saw a code: - Iterator it; ArrayList list = new ArrayList(); it = list.iterator(); The iterator() return type is "Iterator" which is an interface. Please tell me what this code is doing is it returning an object of type Iterator? but as far as I know, interface can't be initialized.

• Need a Java based interruptible timer thread

- by LambeauLeap
I have a Main Program which is running a script on the target device(smart phone) and in a while loop waiting for stdout messages. However in this particular case, some of the heartbeat messages on the stdout could be spaced almost 45secs to a 1minute apart. something like: stream = device.runProgram(RESTORE_LOGS, new String[] {}); stream.flush(); String line = stream.readLine(); while (line.compareTo("") != 0) { reporter.commentOnJob(jobId, line); line = stream.readLine(); } So, I want to be a able to start a new interruptible thread after reading line from stdout with a required a sleep window. Upon being able to read a new line, I want to be able to interrupt/stop(having trouble killing the process), handle the newline of stdout text and restart a process. And it the event I am not able to read a line within the timer window(say 45secs) I want to a way to get out of my while loop either. I already tried the thread.run, thread.interrupt approach. But having trouble killing and starting a new thread. Is this the best way out or am I missing something obvious?

• Java - Handling Non-Blocking Calls

- by sarav
In my application I am using a third-party API. It is a non-blocking method which returns immediately. I have a collection of elements over which I have to invoke this method. Now, my problem is that I have to find a way till all the method execution gets completed and do my next operation. How can I handle this? I cannot modify the third-party API. In short it looks like this for(Object object: objects){ methodA(object); //this is a non-blocking call and returns immediately } // here I want to do my next task only after all the methodA calls completed execution

• What is the best way to automated (integration) test with java with OpenId4Java against real OpenIdP

- by mP
I would like to do a bit more than manually test my openid glue code which happens to use the openid4java library. My goals would be to be able to run it within my IDE with a bunch of tests using Junit or similar. Selenium & tomcat I was thinking of using selenium and a tomcat but thats not exactly a nice approach as this is a bit heavy and not really lightweight. httpunit A solution with http-unit is incomplete because it doesnt really fit with the redirect to my openid provider, authenticate and redirect back. Perhaps i am wrong but this looks like it could get quite involved just to make sure this works. Mocks My last solution is to mock everything and assume thats its accurate and works. If google or yahoo ever change in some way, then ill have to verify manually. The approach is simple but with a major flaw.

• How to strip specific contents of a String in Java

- by user2974877
So I have a string, and I want to strip out some parts of it using, for example, the firt and last characters of the "interesting" part. String dirty = "$!$!%!%$something interesting&!!$!%$something interesting2"; And the output something like: String clean = "something interesting:something interesting2"; Note: The code needs to work without knowing the random part, changing everytime the program runs. I researched and only found code that does it, but only knowing the random segment.

• How to explicitly add a piece of code to a java project

- by user435245
Hi there, I’m working with Net beans IDE and I want to add a piece of code to my project in a way that the source code won’t be visible to the user who is running the project, I decided to export that piece of code as a jar file in eclipse and then add that jar file to the project. But unfortunately net beans does not let me import that. It says which it is expecting a . Or when I insert. It goes in to that class and I cannot import that jar file into the project by import instruction. Is there a command in net beans which creates and object from jar file and then makes access to the functions and classes of the jar file? Would you please give the format of that instruction? If you know a better way to do this task I would be so happy if you share it with me

• Java URI.resolve

- by twip
I'm trying to resolve two URIs, but it's not as straightforward as I'd like it to be. URI a = new URI("http://www.foo.com"); URI b = new URI("bar.html"); The trouble is that a.resolve(b).toString() is now "http://www.foo.combar.html". How can I get away with that?

• java: converting part of a ByteBuffer to a string

- by Jason S
I have a ByteBuffer containing bytes that were derived by String.getBytes(charsetName), where "containing" means that the string comprises the entire sequence of bytes between the ByteBuffer's position() and limit(). What's the best way for me to get the string back? (assuming I know the encoding charset) Is there anything better than the following (which seems a little clunky) byte[] ba = new byte[bbuf.remaining()]; bbuf.get(ba); try { String s = new String(ba, charsetName); } catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) { /* take appropriate action */ }

• java + increasing performance and scalability

- by varun
Hi, below is the a code snippet, which returns the object of a class. now the object is basially comparing to some parameter in loop. my concern is what if there are thousands of objects in loop, in that case performance and scalability can be an issue. please suggest how to improve this code for performance part public Widget get(String name,int major,int minor,boolean exact) { Widget widgetToReturn = null; if(exact) { Widget w = new Widget(name, major, minor); // for loop using JDK 1.5 version for(Widget wid : set) { if((w.getName().equals(wid.getName())) && (wid.getVersion()).equals(w.getVersion())) { widgetToReturn = w; break; } } } else { Widget w = new Widget(name, major, minor); WidgetVersion widgetVersion = new WidgetVersion(major, minor); // for loop using JDK 1.5 version for(Widget wid : set) { WidgetVersion wv = wid.getVersion(); if((w.getName().equals(wid.getName())) && major == wv.getMajor() && WidgetVersion.isCompatibleAndNewer(wv, widgetVersion)) { widgetToReturn = wid; } else if((w.getName().equals(wid.getName())) && wv.equals(widgetVersion.getMajor(), widgetVersion.getMinor())) { widgetToReturn = w; } } } return widgetToReturn; }

• JAVA: XML parsers gives null element

- by Johan
When I try to parse a XML-file, it gives sometimes a null element by the title. I think it has to do with HTML-tags ' How can I solve this problem? I have the follow XML-file:

' Nieuwe DVD '

tekst, tekst tekst

And the follow code to parse the xml-file: //DocumentBuilderFactory, DocumentBuilder are used for //xml parsing DocumentBuilderFactory dbf = DocumentBuilderFactory .newInstance(); DocumentBuilder db = dbf.newDocumentBuilder(); //using db (Document Builder) parse xml data and assign //it to Element Document document = db.parse(is); Element element = document.getDocumentElement(); //take rss nodes to NodeList element.normalize(); NodeList nodeList = element.getElementsByTagName("item"); if (nodeList.getLength() > 0) { for (int i = 0; i < nodeList.getLength(); i++) { //take each entry (corresponds to

tags in //xml data Element entry = (Element) nodeList.item(i); entry.normalize(); Element _titleE = (Element) entry.getElementsByTagName( "title").item(0); Element _categoryE = (Element) entry .getElementsByTagName("category").item(0); Element _pubDateE = (Element) entry .getElementsByTagName("pubDate").item(0); Element _linkE = (Element) entry.getElementsByTagName( "link").item(0); String _title = _titleE.getFirstChild().getNodeValue(); String _category = _categoryE.getFirstChild().getNodeValue(); Date _pubDate = new Date(_pubDateE.getFirstChild().getNodeValue()); String _link = _linkE.getFirstChild().getNodeValue(); //create RssItemObject and add it to the ArrayList RssItem rssItem = new RssItem(_title, _category, _pubDate, _link); rssItems.add(rssItem); conn.disconnect(); }

• Java: Comparing a class with another within that class using a my own .equals

- by user1670252
I am making a method .equals replacing the equals method used. It accepts a object. I want it to check if that object equals the class that runs the .equals class. I know I want to compare all the private methods I have to that object. Is there a way to do this without making another private class to get the private variables from the object? How do I do this to compare equality not identity? I am stuck on this. Do i have to use == to compare? Also looking online i see others use recursion. If this is the way i have to do it can you show and explain it to me? so an example i have public boolean equals(Object o) { this is in a class we will call bobtheBuilder (first thing to pop in my head) I want to check if the object o is equal to the class he has private object array and a private int. I assume I want to check if the array and int of this class equal the array and int of the object.
