• fix pavucontrol Alsa mixer with creative card

  I have been desperately trying to get my creative x-fi soundcard to work with my 10.10 install and I am almost there! I have 1 speaker working and when I open volume control I see that my device is Creative X-fi (Also mixer). However, it appears to be stuck on mono. When I open pavucontrol I get a message that says Connection failed: Connection refused and it exits. Before it closes I can see that playback is set to mono but it won't let me change before it closes. Can someone help me over this last hump? I am running 32 bit 10.10 any advice is much appreciated.

  After installing gnome shell, without any problem, after log in the fonts are missing and it looks like crap...nothing is readable. Don't want to make it a double post, because my issue is similar to the one from this question but for me the problems have not been solved properly. After running the commands from that post, and installing the latest AMD 11.10 driver, the Gnome shell display issues have been solved. But each time I move the mouse in the upper left corner, to bring up the applications...my entire screen flickers. Without the applications been displayed, everything looks fine. Hardware: ATI HD4870, Intel Q6600.

• Split screen and other issues on Ubuntu 11.10 with ATI graphics card

  Ever since updating my Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 I experience issues with graphics. The biggest is the "split screen" effect where my desktop is shifted to the right, resulting in having Unity bar in the middle of the screen. As shown here: http://i.imgur.com/I8nmZ.jpg This changes from boot to boot, sometimes it's on the left, sometimes in the middle. What I tried: Removing fglrx drivers completely Installing post-update version of them, but installation is broken ATM in the Ubuntu, so no go. No one is even trying to fix it (bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-common/+bug/873058 and a couple of duplicates out there) Also using the open source "radeon" driver results in the same (I have a better successful boot ratio with this one, proprietary rarely lets me boot) Other artifacts are: serious screen tearing weird lines flickering in random places lagginess Did anyone experience that? • Why doesn't my graphic card support 1280*1024?

  Hi, I have an external monitor which is an 20" 1280*1024. In windows 7 it works fine with that resolution but in ubuntu it can't. Example: In windows I connect it and activates it, done. In ubuntu I connect and the only resolution that is available is the ones my laptop screen support, 12" 1366*768. My laptop is an asus 1201n. • ubuntu nic card issue

  I am trying to install NIC r8168 and it shows everything installed ok. It is a brand new NIC and the lights wont come on when I plug in a ethernet. The NIC is that is not working is eth0. Why does it show the r8168 driver being used by 0?   Yesterday i was playing around of the wireless settings, and set up a tftp server. Today, i found the wireless icon does not show up on the panel anymore.. monitor and bluetooth are still there... I did: ifconfig -a, and it shows: etho0 link encap:ethernet, and it has: HWaddress inet6 addresss. RXbytes 0 TX bytes: 0, but it does not even have a ip4 address, nor a mask. The other one is: l0 link encap: local loopback inet addr 127.0.0.1. mask 2550 0 0 Can anyone help me how to reset the settings for my wireless connection? Thanks

• Wired card not connecting after trying to connect

  I have an Ubuntu 12.10 PC. When I plug in my internet cable it starts connecting and after a minute it says it can't connect. I tried different cables but nothing works. Wlan works. I think it's the network driver but I don't know how to install/update it.   So I've bought the GT70 2PE Dominator Pro a few weeks ago and I installed Zorin OS 9 Ultimate on it. Today I tried to install the Nvidia drivers on my laptop since it has the GTX 880M, but my system became unbootable. Can anyone help me with this issue? I will write down what I've tried so far. This is what I've tried so far: Downloaded the newest Nvidia drivers from their website. Pressed CTRL+ALT+F2 to open the terminal page thingy. Logged in and got root access. Stopped the lightdm service. Ran the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.32.run installer. Pressed the accept button and right after that it told me the following message: The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! Continue installation anyway?. When I install anyway, it will crash my system and makes it unbootable, Does anyone know how to use my GTX 880M? Do I need to enable it on boot time somehow? Thanks for the support, Sapphire ~

  I am installing Ubuntu 12.04 on an IBM x3250 M2 server, It has an ATI ES1000 with no acceleration (that does not bother me, we don't need it), we use it to connect remotely via FreeNX. FreeNX works fine, (except than in Windows 7 machines NX Client shows only icons and no text ?!) but the only resolution I can get in the monitor directly attached to the server is 800x600. The display manager also shows me two monitors!, the real one and one IBM 15". Which driver should I install?. It seems that the ATI driver that comes with Ubuntu does not work properly. • AR9485 wireless card loses ability to connect after hibernation

  This has happened twice now, the first time it happened I just reinstalled Ubuntu. The only things that I've been messing with in terms of networking, have been restarting the network-manager service after I resume from hibernate (because it never works right after resume, but restarting the service fixes that), and changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 down && ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 11:22:33:44:55 && ifconfig wlan0 up. using tail | dmesg returns a bunch of attempts to connect, saying something like authenticating ... okay you're connected! now I'm going to just disconnect because I feel like it. (reason=3). Any ideas? If it helps maybe I'll add a picture of the tail|dmesg output later. My wireless drivers are as follows: Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter Hamachi Network Interface Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter Here is a pastebin of some terminal outputs that could help. Also, the reddit thread has a few answers, for anyone curious. It's located here. It is entirely possible that it's just my school wifi blocking out my laptop, and my home wifi sucks.   The volume increment or decrement is happening double the intended amount using amixer for my alsa driver using ./amixer -c 0 set Master 1- command. This happens becuase by default volume controls apply for both playback and capture moduels. My alsa driver config doesnt enabled any of the capture controls. even there is no capture enabled, the function from simple_none.c returns true for capture channel. • Is F# a good language for card game AI?

  I'm writing a Mahjong Game in C# (the Chinese traditional game, not the solitaire kind). While writing the code for the bot player's AI, I'm wondering if a functional language like F# would be a more suitable language than what I currently use which is C# with a lot of Linq. I don't know much about F# which is why I ask here. To illustrate what I try to solve, here's a quick summary of Mahjong: Mahjong plays a bit like Gin Rummy. You have 13 tiles in your hand, and each turn, you draw a tile and discard another one, trying to improve your hand towards a winning Mahjong hand, which consists or 4 sets and a pair. Sets can be a 3 of a kind (pungs), 4 of a kind (kongs) or a sequence of 3 consecutive tiles (chows). You can also steal another player's discard, if it can complete one of your sets. The code I had to write to detect if the bot can declare 3 consecutive tiles set (chow) is pretty tedious. I have to find all the unique tiles in the hand, and then start checking if there's a sequence of 3 tiles that contain that one in the hand. Detecting if the bot can go Mahjong is even more complicated since it's a combination of detecting if there's 4 sets and a pair in his hand. And that's just a standard Mahjong hand. There's also numerous "special" hands that break those rules but are still a Mahjong hand. For example, "13 unique wonders" consists of 13 specific tiles, "Jade Empire" consists of only tiles colored green, etc. In a perfect world, I'd love to be able to just state the 'rules' of Mahjong, and have the language be able to match a set of 13 tiles against those rules to retrieve which rules it fulfills, for example, checking if it's a Mahjong hand or if it includes a 4 of a kind. Is this something F#'s pattern matching feature can help solve?

I have created an application that allows my clients to accept online donations and what I want to do is take % percent of that transaction off the top. The problems I have run into are: Authroize does not allow me to take on an additional fee that is paid out to my account I could run a report every month on all my clients transactions to determine what they owe but this is less than ideal All of the companies I looked at do not allow for aggregation where by all of the donation systems pay into my account then I remit payment to my clients Does anyone know of a company that allows for this or is my only option here going to be to setup my own Payment Gateway or is there a simpler solution?

  My problem comes from that my laptop [PB TJ-75] has a faulty Alcor card reader. It’s 100% sure, the device is dead and unusable whatever the OS is. It cannot be disabled in BIOS [latest: Vendor: Phoenix Technologies LTD Version: V1.26 Release Date: 05/04/2010]. If I could take it apart from the main board easily, and if with that, the system would never look again for it, I’ll be very happy! Is it possible, has anyone ever tried this? Or maybe, replacing the BIOS with a more open one, which let you disable the card reader. Does this exists? Here's what I've tried to disable it so far. In Win7, I choose ‘disable’ in device manager and that’s ok. If not, the device keeps on appearing and disappearing and lot of resources are used. In Lubuntu 13.04, I got extra boot time, with the msg:'sdb, assuming drive cache, etc.’ I tried other distros (isos booted by grub). I can boot Puppy, Gparted, and Redobackup apparently without any problem. I cannot boot Debian, live or install + tried Crunchbang and Tails. I got a loop :’usb device, scsi n+1 blabla‘. I tried "nousb", no result, I have blacklisted EHCI, no result, then usb_storage module, better boot time in Lubuntu, with just the message "...data transfer failed", better shutdown time too. But, no way to use usb storage medias. In Debian, it ends with BusyBox prompt. Is it possible to just disable that Alcor card reader? Does it have a specific module? Is there a special kernel boot option that I missed? Does it have something to do with kernel recompiling, and if yes, how to do with isos? Programming a driver which says everything is ok (out of my comprehension for the moment)? Disabling device by vendor id? What is the best way?

• Move an SSD with Windows 7 to a new PCIe SATA controller card

  This is my current setup: Abit AB9 QuadGT motherboard which has an Intel P965 chipset with Intel ICH8 SATA Rev. 2.0 controller Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD which supports SATA Rev. 3.0 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 For some reason I was unable to install Windows with the controller set in AHCI mode, even with the correct driver from Intel so it is currently in IDE mode. Due to the ICH8 controller being SATA Rev 2.0 and running in IDE mode, the SSD is operating well under it's published read/write speeds. I have ordered an Asus U3S6 controller card to add both SATA Rev. 3.0 and USB 3.0 to my computer. The motherboard does have a PCIe x4 slot available so I will hopefully achieve the full potential of my SSD. My question is this - am I able to swap the SSD over to the controller card from the motherboard controller without having to clean install Windows? I am hoping that all I will need to do is ensure that the controller card drivers are available to Windows and set the registry as per this KB article. Will this work or should I perform a clean installation?

• How to access the SD card through my Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Phone?

  I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc phone and I cannot access its SD card through the USB cable provided. I have set the USB connection mode to MSC yet when I connect the phone to my computer I cannot see the SD card (or anything for that matter). The Disk Utility however, does see an SEMC Mass Storage device but it says that no media was detected. I have validated that the SD card works as I removed it from the camera and plugged it into a card reader and saw all the photos and files stored on it. I have validated that the phone works as I have connected it (in MSC mode) to my wife's Windows 7 computer. Can anyone please tell me how I can access the SD card on my phone.
