• What is the easiest way to deploy a MVC2 application from Visual Studio 2010 to IIS 7.5?

  I´ve tried a couple of different ways to deploy a application to a IIS 7.5 running on my machine for testing purposes and i´ve sort of hit a wall. Nothing works out of the box. Everything assumes I have knowledge I don't have and would prefer not to have to aqquire. Google isn't really helping either with answers ranging from "copy files by hand" to "install teamcity and set it up for CI". I have set up TeamCity for java projects before and it's really over kill for my needs at the moment. So anyone know of a fast, simple and easy way to deploy a application during testing/building?

• Upgrade to 4.0 Framework, then downgraded, now can't find Linq namespace?

  I just upgraded from VS2008 to VS2010. In the process, I allowed it to upgrade my DLL's to 4.0. I've decided that wasn't a good idea and now I've rolled back. It all works fine in VS2010, but when it hits my CI server (CruiseControl.Net), I get an error of: The type or namespace name 'Linq' does not exist in the namespace 'System' (are you missing an assembly reference? 3.5 is on the server, and other projects that use 3.5 build fine, so I don't think it's a framework issue. Anyone have any hints?

• codeigniter problem with mod_rewrite on apache 1.3

  Anybody came into this before? Hosting a site on godaddy, the site is developed in codeigniter framework(php), to get pretty url, put this into .htacess RewriteEngine on RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|images|robots\.txt) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php/$1 [L] problem is only domain.com/index.php seems to work, other urls e.g domain.com/user/login won't work, codeigniter always returns '404 page'. Is there anything going on with godaddy's mod_rewrite or just their apache which as I know is version 1.3. Any clue? [update] a bit CI debug, found /system/libraries/Router.php line 239, line show_404( $segments[0] ); always gets invoded. $segments [ 0='index.php' ], that seems to be the problem, but why? All works on my dev box which is in apache2

• Running CodeIgniter cron on localhost

  I'm trying to get a cron job to run every 5 min on my localhost. Using the Cronnix app I entered the following command 0,5 * * * * root curl http://localhost:8888/site/ > /dev/null The script runs fine when I visit http://localhost:8888/site/ in my browser. I've read some stuff about getting CI to run on Cron, using wget and various other options but none make a lot of sense. In another SO post I found the following command wget -O - -q -t 1 http://www.example.com/cron/run What is the "-O - -q -t 1" syntax exactly? Are there other options?

In the config file I have the prefix defined as such: $config['subclass_prefix'] = 'DD_'; Any idea of what I'm missing? TIA

• Getting the hang of CodeIgniter - Templating / loading views

  Attempting to learn CI and going through the docs to get a better understanding. Without getting a separate library, I could make a template by including a list of views like so: $this->load->view('header'); $this->load->view('navigation'); $this->load->view('sidenav_open'); $this->load->view('blocks/userinfo'); $this->load->view('blocks/stats'); $this->load->view('sidenav_close'); $this->load->view('content',$data); $this->load->view('footer'); This makes sense but would I actually have that on each of my controllers (pages)? Not sure if there is a way to include this in the initial controller (welcome) and then in the others somehow reference it? Or perhaps there is something I am missing completely

• Mercurial adding new file gives no match found error

  I have a strange problem with updating Mercurial. Everytime when I add a file to my repository and then update another location of the repository (for example with in CI process), the error "no match found" occures. Then when I remove to whole folder and clone it again there are no problems and the new added file(s) are there. Updating and removing doesnt give problems When I do "a" Verify the following is shown: data/test.txt.i@54: missing revlog! 54: empty or missing test.txt test.txt@54: b80de5d13875 in manifests not found 3 integrity errors encountered! (first damaged changeset appears to be 54) Any idea what could be causing this?

• Import/commit to svn branch from a different codebase

  I am trying to migrate to svn from a not-so-famous version control system (lets call it nsfvc). svn trunk was created some time ago from nsfvc's trunk. There is an active branch in nsfvc that I have to import to svn branch. The diff between nsfvc's trunk and branch is huge (updates, renames, additions, deletions, moves).   I'm new to php and CI, and I'm having some trouble in my controller. I feel that I'm doing this the wrong way, and it could be easier, I just don't know the syntax: $data['members'] = $this->home_model->getUser($id); $credit = $this->home_model->getCredit($id); if ($credit == '0'){stuff...} So I'm getting the user's data that has their the same information as "getCredit" does, but I don't know how to get the single variable that I need for my if statement... How can I just use the "getUser" function so that I'm not pulling redundant information?

• Codeigniter: how do I select count when `$query->num_rows()` doesn't work for me?

  I have a query which is returning a sum, so naturally it returns one row. I need to count the number of records in the DB which made that sum. Here's a sample of the type of query I am talking about (MySQL): SELECT i.id, i.vendor_quote_id, i.product_id_requested, SUM(i.quantity_on_hand) AS qty, COUNT(i.quantity_on_hand) AS count FROM vendor_quote_item AS i JOIN vendor_quote_container AS c ON i.vendor_quote_id = c.id LEFT JOIN company_types ON company_types.company_id = c.company_id WHERE company_types.company_type = 'f' AND i.product_id_requested = 12345678 I have found and am now using the select_min(), select_max(), and select_sum() functions, but my COUNT() is still hard-coded in. The main problem is that I am having to specify the table name in a tightly coupled manner with something like $this->$db->select( 'COUNT(myDbPrefix_vendor_quote_item.quantity_on_hand) AS count' ) which kills portability and makes switching environments a PIA. How can/should I get my the count values I am after with CI in an uncoupled way??

• What is Database Continuous Integration?

  Although not everyone is practicing continuous integration, many have at least heard of the concept. A recent poll on www.simple-talk.com indicates that 40% of respondents are employing the technique. It is widely accepted that the earlier issues are identified in the development process, the lower the cost to the development process. The worst case scenario, of course, is for the bug to be found by the customer following the product release. A number of Agile development best practices have evolved to combat this problem early in the development process, including pair programming, code inspections and unit testing. Continuous integration is one such Agile concept that tackles the problem at the point of committing a change to source control. This can alternatively be run on a regular schedule. This triggers a sequence of events that compiles the code and performs a variety of tests. Often the continuous integration process is regarded as a build validation test, and if issues were to be identified at this stage, the testers would simply not 'waste their time ' and touch the build at all. Such a ‘broken build’ will trigger an alert and the development team’s number one priority should be to resolve the issue. How application code is compiled and tested as part of continuous integration is well understood. However, this isn’t so clear for databases. Indeed, before I cover the mechanics of implementation, we need to decide what we mean by database continuous integration. For me, database continuous integration can be implemented as one or more of the following: 1)      Your application code is being compiled and tested. You therefore need a database to be maintained at the corresponding version. 2)      Just as a valid application should compile, so should the database. It should therefore be possible to build a new database from scratch. 3)     Likewise, it should be possible to generate an upgrade script to take your already deployed databases to the latest version. • Business Choices and Evony

  Recently, I’ve been playing a game called Evony, and I finally decided to quit the game and thought I should warn others who might be tempted.  I also find a lot of insight with this game as an example.  A few of the companies that I’ve worked with or worked for have been like this and they are NOT good places to be. Evony is a joke designed to milk as much money out of people as possible.  As a professional software developer who mentors teams on how to build better software, here's what I see: They obviously offshore all development and have little oversight over that offshore development, and they probably have a small team at that.  Evidenced by the poor grammar throughout the game. They're seeking to maximize revenue and pushing to do as little development as possible, which would mean a small team. They're horribly understaffed in the customer support department as evidenced by never replying to this forum and never responding to bug reports or help requests (I've had one open with no response AT ALL for over a month . . .) They have way inadequate testing, no CI, and probably no automated unit tests.  You can see this by the poor grammar throughout the game and the type of bugs that show up. They aren't following a formal development process (no Agile, Waterfall, or anything else) as evidenced by their lack of predictable release cycle and lack of visibility. I'm guessing that the internal code base is terrible, otherwise, there wouldn't be an "Age II" that had nothing more than a new visual interface and a few rule tweaks.  This is also evidenced by the itty bitty scope of bug fixes and their inability to really fix bugs. Their Architect sucks.  Really, 42k user is all you can handle on a single server?  Could you REALLY not come up with a better way to scale to handle users?  They've built isolated worlds, instead of a single continuous world. Back to milking people for money--to really progress, you have to spend money. All of this adds up to knowing, deliberate actions on the part of management.  They CHOOSE to do this (like AOL choosing to send more discs instead of improve quality). So, what can we learn? This game will never really improve, since the bosses don't care, they're only in it for the money. The game will never have good support.  Again, the owners don't care. Giving them money only perpetuates this scam (and yes, I've given them money, way too much money. :() They don't care if you quit.  There's a new sucker born every day. Don't EVER go to work for them.  I've worked both with and for people like this and the culture is NEVER good. Ah well. Technorati Tags: Evony

• Database unit testing is now available for SSDT

  Good news was announced yesterday for those that are using SSDT and want to write unit tests, unit testing functionality is now available. The announcement was made on the SSDT team blog in post Available Today: SSDT—December 2012. Here are a few thoughts about this news. Firstly, there seems to be a general impression that database unit testing was not previously available for SSDT – that’s not entirely true. Database unit testing was most recently delivered in Visual Studio 2010 and any database unit tests written therein work perfectly well against SQL Server databases created using SSDT (why wouldn’t they – its just a database after all). In other words, if you’re running SSDT inside Visual Studio 2010 then you could carry on freely writing database unit tests; some of the tight integration between the two (e.g. right-click on an object in SQL Server Object Explorer and choose to create a unit test) was not there – but I’ve never found that to be a problem. I am currently working on a project that uses SSDT for database development and have been happily running VS2010 database unit tests for a few months now. All that being said, delivery of database unit testing for SSDT is now with us and that is good news, not least because we now have the ability to create unit tests in VS2012. We also get tight integration with SSDT itself, the like of which I mentioned above. Having now had a look at the new features I was delighted to find that one of my big complaints about database unit testing has been solved. As I reported here on Connect a refactor operation would cause unit test code to get completely mangled. • Paranoid management, contractor checking work [closed]

  Just wanted to get some opinions and experiences on an issue I'm having at work. First, a little background. I've been working at a company for some time (past any probation periods) and rewriting a horrendous system. No tests, incomplete and broken functionality everywhere, enough copypasta to feed a small village, redundant code, more unused SQL tables than used ones and terrible performance. I've never seen such bad code, pretty much all of it is worthy of being posted on TheDailyWTF. The company has been operating for a number of years and have had a string of bad developers working on this system. I made a call on rewriting instead of refactoring since I judged it to be less work overall and decided that the result will address the requirements more appropriately, since the central requirement is to have a future-proof system for the next decade with plenty of room to scale up. Refactoring would have entailed untangling a huge ball of yarn and at the same time integrating it with a proper foundation or building a foundation from scratch. I've introduced the latest spiffy framework, unit & functional testing, CI, a bug tracker and agile workflow to the environment. I've fixed most of the performance issues of the old system (there were no indexes on any of the tables, for example). I've created an automated deployment process for the old system. The CTO has been maintaining the old system while I have been building the new one and he has been advising management that everything is being done as per best practices. However, management is hiring a contractor to come in and verify my work. In my experience, this is unprecedented. I can understand their reasoning to an extent, since they've had bad luck in the past, but can't help but feel somewhat offended at the fact that they distrust two senior developers who have been working with them for some time enough that a third party is being brought in. And it's not just me who is under watch - people's emails are constantly checked, someone had a remote desktop application installed on their computer of which I was asked to check the usage logs to try to determine if they were stealing sensitive data and there are CCTV cameras in one of the rooms. It's the first time I've decided to disable my Skype history at work. Am I right to feel indignant here? Has anyone else ever encountered such a situation? If so, how did it work out in the end? Was it worth sticking around? Should I just find another job?

  I've been a backend developer for a long time, and I really swim in that field. C++/C#/Java, databases, NoSql, caching - I feel very much at ease around these platforms/concepts. In the past few years, I started to taste end-to-end web programming, and recently I decided to take a job offer in a front end team developing a large, complex product. I wanted to break out of my comfort zone and become more of an "all around developer". Problem is, I'm getting more and more convinced I don't like it. Things I like about backend programming, and missing in frontend stuff: More interesting problems - When I compare designing a server that handle massive data, to adding another form to a page or changing the validation logic, I find the former a lot more interesting. Refactoring refactoring refactoring - I am addicted to Visual Studio with Resharper, or IntelliJ. I feel very comfortable writing code as it goes without investing too much thought, because I know that with a few clicks I can refactor it into beautiful code. To my knowledge, this doesn't exist at all in javascript. Intellisense and navigation - I hate looking at a bunch of JS code without instantly being able to know what it does. In VS/IntelliJ I can summon the documentation, navigate to the code, climb up inheritance hiererchies ... life is sweet. Auto-completion - Just hit Ctrl-Space on an object to see what you can do with it. Easier to test - With almost any backend feature, I can use TDD to capture the requirements, see a bunch of failing tests, then implement, knowing that if the tests pass I did my job well. With frontend, while tests can help a bit, I find that most of the testing is still manual - fire up that browser and verify the site didn't break. I miss that feeling of "A green CI means everything is well with the world." Now, I've only seriously practiced frontend development for about two months now, so this might seem premature ... but I'm getting a nagging feeling that I should abandon this quest and return to my comfort zone, because, well, it's so comfy and fun. Another point worth mentioning in this context is that while I am learning some frontend tools, a lot of what I'm learning is our company's specific infrastructure, which I'm not sure will be very useful later on in my career. Any suggestions or tips? Do you think I should give frontend programming "a proper chance" of at least six to twelve months before calling it quits? Could all my pains be growing pains, and will they magically disappear as I get more experienced? Or is gaining this perspective is valuable enough, even if plan to do more "backend stuff" later on, that it's worth grinding my teeth and continuing with my learning?

• How to fix subfolders IIS7 functionality?

  I have a problem in my sharing hosting that all websites in subfolders, their URL appear like this: http://amrelgarhy.com/amrelgarhy/ I sent to godaddy, and they sent me that its because of IIS7 and they can't solve, any one can tell me how to fix that? Here what i sent to godaddy and their reply: "as i saw before on this page http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.asp?ci=9009 compare windows plans, "Multiple Web sites: unlimited" so i have the right to run more than one website inside my hosting.   ... like my title says... I cannot connect to my instance on sql server express from sql server standard... I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... I get this error. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
