  In short I'm creating a 2D mmorpg and unlike my last "mmo" I started developing I want to make sure that this one will scale well and work well when I want to add new in-game features or modify existing ones. With my last attempt with an avatar chat within the first few thousand lines of code and just getting basic features added into the game I seen my code quality lowering and my ability to add new features or modify old ones was getting lower too as I added more features in. It turned into one big mess that some how ran, lol. This time I really need to buckle down and find a design that will allow me to create a game framework that will be easy to add and remove features (aka things like playing mini-games within my world or a mail system or buddy list or a new public area with interactive items). I'm thinking that maybe a component based approach MIGHT be what I'm looking for but I'm really not sure. I have read documents on mmorpg design and 2d game engine architecture but nothing really explained a way of designing a game framework that will basically let me "plug-in" new features into the main game and use the resources of the main game without changing much within my 'main game code'. Hope someone understands what I mean, any help will is appreciated.

• Can't create new xib files in Xcode projects

  This one is a doozy... My buddy just downloaded the iPhone SDK on his Snow Leopard MacBook Pro. No matter what kind of project he creates (Window Based, View Based, etc...,) he can't create or use his own xib files. The project will compile and run fine until he adds a new xib file. Here are some symptoms: When he selects a pre-generated xib in Xcode (such as MainWindow.xib), no preview is shown on the right hand side. Double clicking on this file will open it in interface builder (This is correct behavior). When he selects his own custom xib, the preview pane displays the XML content of the xib. Double clicking on his custom xib opens up the XML file in Xcode - as if it were a standard code file (This is jacked up). Opening his custom xib from finder opens it in Interface Builder. When building the application, the build warning says something to the effect of "Warning: No rule to process file /path/to/CustomXib of type sourcecode.xib for architecture i386" At runtime he gets the error: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[UIViewController _loadViewFromNibNamed:bundle:] was unable to load a nib named "MyCustomXib"' We've uninstalled Xcode from the command line and reinstalled. I've verified that it's the right version for his machine. I'm stumped!

• MVC 2 - Name Attributes on HTML Input Field when using Parent/Child Entities

  Hi All, I'm pretty new to MVC 2 using the Entity Framework. I have two tables Company {ID int identity PK,Name nvarchar} and User {ID int identity PK,UserName nvarchar,CompanyID int FK}. A Foreign Key exists between User and Company. I generated my ADO.NET Entity Data Model, a Controller and a view to insert a record. My HTML form has the fields Company and UserName and the idea is when I click save a Company and User is inserted into the database. Sounds straight forward right! My question is as follows: I created a strongly-typed view derived from my 'User' entity. I'm using the the html helper Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.Organisation.Name) but the html name attribute for this input field is 'Organisation.Name'. My problem with this is that the dot throws up all sorts of issues in JQuery, which sees this as a property. If I want to change the name I read that I can use DataAnnotations but because I used the Entity Designer this involves using Buddy Classes. Seems like a bit of overkill just to change the html name attribute on this input field. Am I approaching this the right way or am I missing something here? Thanks for the help !

• What tasks aren't easy for PHP, ColdFusion and ASP?

  PHP, ColdFusion, and ASP (among many others) are usually sold on their strengths. What are their weaknesses? If one were to develop a niche product to handle the things that these products weren't so good at, what should it focus on? EDIT I'm trying to figure out what things PHP etc are bad at. They're all good at doing the nuts and bolts stuff, if one is looking with a bottom-to-top mindset. I'm thinking a little more globally, more top-to-bottom; what's difficult to achieve in PHP/ASP/CF without thousands of lines of code and twenty minutes of server time? EDIT Suppose company A comes up to you and says, "We want you to do x in PHP." What values of x will cause you to say, "Forget it, buddy, no one in their right mind would use PHP for that"? (swap PHP in the above quote for your favourite tool) EDIT Have we got to the point where everyone's needs can be met with PHP frameworks, Rails and ... er ... Java?

  Hello! I am trying to draw a TextView into the cell of a TreeView. (Why? I would like to have custom tags on text, so they can be clickable and trigger different actions/popup menus depending on where user clicks). I have been trying to write a customized CellRenderer for this purpose, but so far I failed because I find it extremely difficult to find generic documentation on rendering design in gtk. More than an answer at the specific question (that might be hard/not doable, and I'm not expecting you to do everything for me), I am first looking for documentation on how a widget is rendered, to understand how one is supposed to implement a CellRenderer. Can you share any link that explains, either for gtk or for pygtk, the rendering mechanism? More specifically: size allocation mechanism (should I say protocol?). I understand that a window has a defined size, and then queries its children, saying "my size is w x h, what would be your ideal size, buddy?", and then sometimes shrinks children when all children cant fit together at their ideal sizes. Any specific documentation on that, and on particular on when this happens during rendering? How are rendered "builtin" widgets? What kind of methods do they call on Widget base class? On the parent Window? When? Do they use pango.Layout? can you manually draw a TextView onto a pango.Layout object? This link gives an interesting example showing how you can draw content in a pango.Layout object and use it in a CellRenderer. I guess that I could adapt it if only I understood how TextView widget are rendered. Or perhaps, to put it more simply: given an existing widget instance, how does one render it at a specific gdk.Rectangle? Thanks a lot.

  Hey all, Does anyone have any ideas on what could be used as a way to filter untrustworthy user submitted content? Take Yelp for instance, they would need to prevent competitors writing business reviews on their competitors. They would need to prevent business owners favourably reviewing their own business, or forcing friends/family to do so. They would need to prevent poor quality reviews from affecting a businesses rating and so on. I can't think what they might use to do this: Prevent multiple users from the same IP reviewing certain things Prevent business owners reviewing their own business (maybe even other businesses in the same categories as their own?) Somehow determine what a review is about and what the actual intentions behind it are Other than the first and second points, I can't think of any clever/easy way to filter potentially harmful reviews from being made available, other than a human doing it. Obviously for a site the size of Yelp this wouldn't be feasible, so what parameters could they take into consideration? Even with human intervention, how would anyone know it was the owners best buddy writing a fake review without knowing the people? I'm using this as an example in a larger study on the subject of filtering user content automatically. Does anyone have any ideas how these systems may work and what they take into consideration? • why are read only form fields in django a bad idea?

  I've been looking for a way to create a read-only form field and every article I've found on the subject comes with a statement that "this is a bad idea". Now for an individual form, I can understand that there are other ways to solve the problem, but using a read only form field in a modelformset seems like a completely natural idea. Consider a teacher grade book application where the teacher would like to be able to enter all the students' (note the plural students) grades with a single SUBMIT. A modelformset could iterate over all the student-grades in such a way that the student name is read-only and the grade is the editable field. I like the power and convenience of the error checking and error reporting you get with a modelformset but leaving the student name editable in such a formset is crazy. Since the expert django consensus is that read-only form fields are a bad idea, I was wondering what the standard django best practice is for the example student-grade example above?

• jQuery animate mouseover/mouseout keep drop menu visible

  I'm trying to make a basic drop down menu with animate and am running into the issue where I can't seem to figure out how to keep the dropdown part open until the mouse leaves. Is there an easy way to tell this to stay open? I know what I have is completely wrong regarding the .clickme mouseout function since it will unload the menu accordingly. If anyone can help in this specific instance, I would be super grateful. • SQLXML with Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008

  Hi all, I have an application that uses SQLXML to access data on the database. We have it working on a Windows 2003 server and SQL Server 2005. Now the client wants to install it on Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008 and we are getting errors like: Microsoft.Data.SqlXml.SqlXmlException: Class not registered --- System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040154): Class not registered at Microsoft.Data.SqlXml.Common.UnsafeNativeMethods. ISQLXMLCommandManagedInterface.ExecuteToOutputStream() at Microsoft.Data.SqlXml.SqlXmlCommand.innerExecute(Stream strm) ... etc etc This is driving me crazy. SQLXML is quite an obsolete technology, and we are trying to use it with the latest SO. I can't find official information about SQLXML and Windows 2008, it seems it's not officially supported but they don't say it's not supported either. The SQLXML4.0SP1 installation seems to work fine, but it seems like it fails on runtime. Do you have any ideas? Has someone tried anything like this?

• iPhone: Failed to launch simulated application: Unknown error.

  This is a new iPhone project, only 1 target (different from this question) On build we get: Failed to launch simulated application: Unknown error. The google again gives us nothing, lots of people have encountered this and there are lots of crazy ideas to try "oh clean the build", "clear the cache", "twiddle this flag" and none of them work and work consistently. We can reproduce this on two different machines with SDK 2.2.1 and 3.0 beta. Not the install on the machines since other iphone projects work just fine so we believe it has something to do with the config of this particular project but after combing through the config twice we can't spot the problem. Vanna, I'd like to buy a clue for $200 please. Tried: XCode menu-Clear cache Tried: clean all targets Tried: rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/iPhone\ Simulator

• Mapping Enums to Database with NHibernate/Castle ActiveRecord

  There's a few other posts on mapping Enums to the DB with ActiveRecord, but none of them answer my question. I have an enum called OrderState: public enum OrderState {InQueue, Ordered, Error, Cancelled} And I have the following property on the table: [Property(NotNull = true, SqlType = "orderstate", ColumnType = "DB.EnumMapper, WebSite")] public OrderState State { get { return state; } set { state = value; } } And I have the following type class: public class EnumMapper : NHibernate.Type.EnumStringType<OrderState> { public EnumMapper() { } public override NHibernate.SqlTypes.SqlType SqlType { get { return new NHibernate.SqlTypes.SqlType(DbType.Object); } } } Now this actually works the way I want, but the problem is I have tons of enums and I don't want to create a EnumMapper class for each one of them. Isn't there some way to just tell ActiveRecord to use DbType.Object for any enum? It seems to either want to be an integer or a string, but nothing else. This one's been driving me crazy for the last 2 hours.. Mike

• [android] Screen Orientation Landscape back to Portrait not working

  Hello, I've racked my brain for hours over this issue. I have created a main.xml and designed one for the res/layout-land (landscape) format and another one for portrait in res/layout. When I rotate the emulator (ctrl-F11), my app rotates properly to landscape using the correct main.xml, but a subsequent rotation back to portrait just keeps the landscape mail.xml. This was done in a 2.0 AVD.. Out of despiration I downloaded the new Sample Code for Multiple Resolutions and had to create a new 2.1 AVD, to my surprise rotation with this app works correctly as expected. So I then decided to try my app on the 2.1 AVD and it works perfectly. So, is this a Bug in a 2.0 AVD or is there something special I need to be doing for < 2.1 SDK versions? This is driving me crazy because no where did anyone mention this issue. Thanks in advance

  Fellows, I'm going crazy with looks like a really stupid problem. I'm trying to build a simple example using PostSharp as a log AOP utility. I've not installed PostSharp, and I don't want to, I want to reference the necessaries DLLs, change my .csproj and see everything working. Change the project and add references was kind of easy, byt just after adding the LogAttribute to a method I got two errors: Error 1 'Log4PostSharp.LogAttribute' is not an attribute class C:\Dev\LogWithPostsharp\LogWithPostsharpCmd\Program.cs 17 10 LogWithPostsharpCmd Error 2 The type 'PostSharp.Extensibility.MulticastAttribute' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must add a reference to assembly 'PostSharp.Public, Version=1.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b13fd38b8f9c99d7'. C:\Dev\LogWithPostsharp\LogWithPostsharpCmd\Program.cs 18 22 LogWithPostsharpCmd The first error really looks like consequence of the second, but here is the deal: the PostSharp.Public.* simply doesn't exist in the downloaded .zip. • Problem with Richfaces running with NGinx proxy

  Hi, I got a problem with my Richfaces application. I am using it with JSF and GlassFish v.2 on my localhost and combination od dataTable and dataScroller works fine. While moving the app to the VPS running Tomcat but proxied by Nginx server, everything crashes. Exactly the scroller is working, but the dataTable view is not refreshed! I looked at responses with Firebug and figured out, that even on VPS the response contains 2nd page of the dataTable, but it is not shown on the screen. I tried everything - changing page attribute of dataScroller (it was taken from session bean, I changed that to request bean). I also removed page attribute from dataScroller - did not help either. Finally I added my table to reRender attribute of dataScroller - still whichever page I choose I am seeing only the first one. Does anyone even heard about such problem? I am going crazy with this. • Why is -[UISwitch superlayer] being called?

  I've got sort of a crazy thing going on where I have an NSProxy subclass standing in for a UISwitch. Messages sent to the proxy are forwarded to the switch. Please don't comment on whether or not this is a good design, because in context, it makes sense as an incredibly cool thing. The dealio is that when I try to add this object as an accessory view to a UITableViewCell, I get the following crash: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[UISwitch superlayer]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x5889740' Yes, I could just set the proxy's target as the accessory view, but then I would have to keep track of the proxy so that I could release it at the right time. So, what I really want is to be able to have the proxy retained by the table cell, and released when it is removed from the view just like a normal accessory view. So, why is -[UISwitch superlayer] (a method which does not exist) being called, and how do I save the world?

  Hi, I'm trying to implement SwfUpload in my web page, and I'm using php to save files on server. As is the first time I use this component, I choose to run the algoritm is suggested from the SwfUpload team (http://swfupload.org/forum/generaldiscussion/214): I've put it in a file and I've said the control to use it as code file. It didn't work, as I'm asking help, but what really drives me crazy is that i really don't know how to debug that stuff! The request to the file is encapsulated into the flash object, and i can't get any feedback from it if something goes wrong. Anyone is more experienced than me about this control? Thanks

• Asp.net Response.Redirect Error

  My team and I are working on a portal applicaiton. When a user requests a page, we get a page object (contianing permissions, actual file to use and what not). We then do a Response.Redirect to "~/Default.aspx". The crazy thing is that when the code to validate access and what not is called from a button click event from within an ajax update panel, response.redirect is pasting a "&f2" or a "/" into the url. So rather than http://localhost/Default.aspx, the webbrowser is being redirected to http://localhost/%f2Default.aspx, and is subsequently returning a 404 error. HttpContext.Current.Response.Redirect("~/Default.aspx", false); Anyone have an idea of why this would occur? And it only happens when the click event fires inside an update panel.

• How to get rid of Drupal CSS stylesheets?

  I am trying to accomplish the following. I need to use Drupal 6 as a project requirement, but I want to use it with my own HTML and CSS stylesheets for each node/view/panel etc. The problem is, whatever the theme, I always found that Drupal applies to my HTML content both my CSS stylesheets and the CSS related to the theme chosen. I have also tried, without success, using the stylestripper module (installed in sites/all/modules). No matter what I do, additional CSS stylesheets are applied to my pages, completely destroying my layout. What is the proper way to achieve this? Why stylestripper does not work at all? Is there a completely blank theme available? I have tried basic, mothership, zen etc, but I always see additional CSS stylesheets applied to my pages. This is driving me crazy, Drupal was chosen by someone else for its flexibility. Thank you in advance.

  I'm struggling with this probelm for few hours and it's drives me crazy. I want my drop down menu put over flash area and it works but only in FF. Unfotunelly IE and Opera shows my menu under flash. The DHTML menu system is the simplest as possible and it was wrote from scratch by me. I've been trying everything, and still it doesn't work like it should. I tried to put the flash element by jquery.flashEmbed script and by standard code with param transparent, but it never works.   I have a aspx page I'm trying to (remotely) debug. It should add an image and set the src. The value seems correct if i msgbox the value that should be used for the "ImageUrl" But viewing the page there is no image and the src is: http://portal.mxlogic.com/images/transparent.gif This is a mcaffee page so is this some security thing...that is just a wild\crazy guess. Maybe i'm missing something very obvious...I did not write the code and I'm not really a aspx developer. Any ideas?? llf as requested some code... • TortoiseSVN: how to set up projects on a existing directory structure of source code

  I have an old pet project I want to revive (haven't had enough time for it last year - small kid - you know) - so restored old copy of my dev folder from archive, but since I have rebuilt my machine since when - I can't remember what needs to be done now. I installed the latest version of TortoiseSVN, and the existing directory structure from my old dev machine looks like: ProjectName *SubProject1 **branches ***1.1 ***1.2 **tags **trunk *SubProject2 **branches **1.0.3 **1.0.4 **1.0.5 **tags **trunk I tried "import project" but it ask for a url - don't know what to specify there ... can someone post a url to a good TortSVN tutorial - so I could set up my projects quickly (I guess I need to setup SubProject1 and SubProject2) - then I install AnkhSVN for VS2008 and will spend this Sunday coding like crazy while I still have some time ;-)
