  • How will I support 100,000 requests an hour?!

    I know this question is a little strange but I got lucky with an idea and I need some numbers to use for when I try to make a deal with a company. I'm wondering how much it'll cost me to run a site that's heavy on PHP and gets between 70,000 and 100,000 requests an hour on something like Rackspace's Cloud Servers. I have no idea how many servers I need or how much RAM each one should have. There will be a decent number of images on the site (probably something like 10,000 in the first couple weeks) and the site runs on about 2,500 lines of PHP code. I figure I should sign up for a CDN of some kind, although CDN In A Box is all I've heard of and I'm not sure it's necessary for a site that's already on a cloud platform. I've obviously never done anything like this before so I'm just looking to get an estimation of what I need for this massive site... Also, I use a database and I was wondering how that works - would I dedicate one of the cloud servers to running the database or would I need to put the database into each of the cloud servers?   • Unicenter Software Delivery 4 not able to connect to MS SQL 2000 Database after W2003 SP2 upgrade

    Hello Everyone Yesterday I installed the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 on a Windows Server 2003 which has Unicenter Software Delivery 4 installed. Prior to the installation I disabled every CA service on the server (Brightstor, SDO , RCO, TNG) and the MS SQL 2000 service. After the installation of the SP2 I enabled the services again but the Unicenter Service is not able to connect to the MS SQL 2000 Database anymore. The database itself is up and running and I can connect to it with the Enterprise Manager. A dbcc checkdb doesnt return any errors on the Unicenter database.   • GPO Software Uninstall Not Taking Place

    I am having some trouble with my software GPO's and can't seem to find any answers using Google. I successfully deployed software using my policy but when I delete another, the uninstallation of the software does not take place. What I did: Deployed software using a GPO, used gpupdate /force on the workstation to update, reboot, and install the software Deleted another software installation by: Right-Click All Tasks Remove 'Immediately uninstall the software from users and computers' From there, I did another gpupdate /force to try and get the GPO to refresh and uninstall the software on the workstation. This did not work. I then forced replication between my domain controllers and ran another gpupdate /force on the workstation and this did not uninstall the software. There are not error logs or indications that the uninstall is being triggered when I go into the event viewer, and I know for a fact that the policy is working in other aspects. So my questions is: Where do I look next to find the answer as to why GPO software deployments are working but un-installations are not, based off of what I have already tried? Thank you in advance. UPDATE: After using gpresult /z, there is no indication of a pending un-installation or removal of software. Under the section entitled "Software Installations", the software I am trying to uninstall is not listed. There is no other indication that the software I am trying to uninstall even exists. I also turned on RSoP logging and did (yet another) gpupdate /force to yield no blatant results. There is no indication that an uninstall event was even triggered, let alone incapability or failure. Although I am sure I marked it to uninstall in case of two events (the falling out of the scope of management, as well as the removal of the entry), I am beginning to think the entry just never triggered something that should have been triggered. UPDATE #2: After troubleshooting this (frustrating) application assignment, I have chalked it up as a fluke. I have tested with other software to make sure that the uninstall of other application assignments is actually working, so I am assuming it is something related to the package directly. There is the possibility that my problem resides in something related to what @joeqwerty linked in a comment below but because I can't go back in time, I don't think I will be able to prove it. I will probably be running a script via another GPO to guarantee the un-installation of left over package installs.   • Best Practices: How can admin deploy software to 100s of PC ?

    Hi ... The Environment: I am working for a college. We have a couple of labs (about 100 PCs) for students. At the end of the semester, the PCs will be full of viruses, corrupt system files, all sorts of illegal downloads etc. (everything you can expect from a student environment). At the end of the semester, we would like to wipe out all the systems and do a clean install (WindowsXP + a set of application suites) to get ready for the next batch of students. Question: Is there any free software that will enable an admin to deploy a clean disk image to all the PCs in one go?

We're currently using McAfee for our Windows desktops but to get updates and alerts with the latest version it looks like you need to be running their EPO server software. I'd like to avoid the cost of hardware and Windows licensing, and if possible to run just client-based antivirus.   • Resealing windows XP stops PXE working

    I'm trying to capture a drive image of a windows xp pro machine. I've gone through the steps and resealed the machine. When i try and network boot the PXE instantly gives the message "PXE-MOF" and ends. I have managed to get network boot to work on this machine whenever XP is not resealed. I have tried Multiple times to get PXE to work after resealing windows, but with no luck. As soon as i unseal it, PXE works every time. I know PXE is supposed to work independent of what's on the hard drive. Is there any way that resealing windows could cause PXE to stop working.

  • Disable Bing search entirely from IE when using sysprep

    I'm creating a Windows Server 2012 R2 image for our product (an all-in-one appliance installed on server hardware) and I am having incredible trouble with getting Bing removed from Internet Explorer. Our clients do not want Bing at all, not as a default search, not as a "search from address bar" feature, not in any sense. I've managed to configure everything else that I want in IE using WAIK to generate an unattend XML file but this has me completely stuck. Ideally I want Bing removed from IE altogether but I would make do with it just being completely disabled. I can find no options in either WAIK or Group Policy to configure this as I need it. Any ideas gratefully received.

    I have a server with Hyper-V configured, it is easy to create a new virtual machine using the management tools, but it can take some time. I often see those hosts that say "We can have your server ready in 5 seconds". And I wonder how do they manage this? I would also like to deploy a full functional clean server in 5 seconds. So how is this done? Is it by first installing a clean server, then take a snapshot of that for later to deploy a new server based on that snapshot? I tried doing this, but I did not find any where to install a new virtual machine based on the snapshot. Anyone got any thoughts to share on this?

    We recently purchased EMCO Remote Installer to deploy MSI packages we're creating. We are still (unfortunately) in an NT4 domain, and when I try to deploy a package using domain's administrator credentials I'm getting "access denied". Under the "requirements for remote computers" section on the EMCO website (http://www.emco.is/products/remote-installer/requirements.php), it says that it requires remote machines to have: * Started services: Computer Browser, Remote Registry * File and Printer sharing enabled * Windows Installer 3.1 * TCP ports opened: 135, 139, 445 * UDP ports opened: 137, 138 Is there any way of scripting these changes? Then, I wanna use that big HDD and the "stuff" in it to be able to deploy new machines without the hassle of reinstalling Windows and whatnot(i.e. I do not want to restore nor simply clone a same machine, I literally want to use clones to save time during machine set up). Obviously I'd deploy the "stuff" onto an HDD going into a machine that I know the hardware of to avoid driver issues and whatnot. I alos have enough Windows keys to deal with the multiple activations. I tried using Acronis True Image but it doesn't seem to do what I want(unless idk how to use it properly). Any advice is welcome thanks :)

  • System Reserved Partition has Drive Letter After Applying a WIM Image with ImageX

    I have installed Windows Vista on a computer using ImageX from WinPE. I followed the instructions here for partitioning the hard drive, creating a 300 MB system partition and using the rest of the drive for a Windows partition. The install has worked perfectly apart from the fact that the system partition has been assigned the drive letter C: and the Windows has been assigned the drive letter D:. I would like the system drive to have no letter and the Windows partition to have the drive letter C:. I think I have managed to figure out why it is doing this. See my answer below. Can anyone confirm this?

  • Installing software after .wim image

    I have been looking all day into how to install software to a .wim image. I have a .wim image of a laptop that will be deplyed to 20 more. The image is pretty much good to go except I need to add a couple more drivers and a couple more applications. Is there a way to do this in the answer file? Do I have to deploy the image, install the drivers/application, sysprep, and recapture the image? Any information relating to this will be greatly appreciated. Leon ps I have only been using answer files and imagex. Would like to stick with this for the time being. I plan on using WDT and WDS when I have some time to learn about it.

And I want to run the program on server C. So using caspol I can allow the executable to be ran remotely. that means from B I can run \C\shared\my.exe What I want to do is from A run \C\shared\my.exe on B. SysInternals\PsExec.exe -u username -p password -accepteula \\ServerC -i 0 -d -w \\ServerB\Nightly\Server \\ServerB\Nightly\Server\server.exe The user has all the necessary rights. But, the -w (working directory) options apparently wants a path relative to the server I point to. Any idea?

  • How can I fix puppet refusing to start and asking for "master.pp"?

    I'm using the very latest version of puppet and have been following the Apress "Pro Puppet" guide step by step. I have installed puppet sudo aptitude install ruby libshadow-ruby1.8 sudo aptitude install puppet puppetmaster facter I have edited /etc/puppet/puppet.conf to include certname [master] certname=puppet.mydomain.com I have edited /etc/hosts and added the following line 127.0.0.1 puppet.mydomain.com puppet I have set the hostname of the server echo "puppet.mydomain.com" > /etc/hostname hostname -F /etc/hostname And then I try and run puppet from the command line. puppet master --verbose --no-daemonize And puppet gives me this error: Could not parse for environment production: Could not find file /master.pp I'm running all commands with sudo and the last line of the error message always says that it can't find master.pp and the path before it is to my current working directory. What am I doing wrong? I should also mention that I don't have a DNS record set up for puppet.mydomain.com - I saw some online documentation mentioning this might be a problem - however I was fairly sure that the hosts file would let me get around that.

  • Deploying Windows Service through group policy fails with Event ID 102

    I'm trying to deploy a custom Windows Service (written in C#; installed through a VS setup project) using a group policy. To help debug this, I also have two additional MSIs in the same policy. All three packages are deployed as a machine policy, not a user one. On one machine (runs Windows Server 2008; no UAC), all three deploy fine. The service is set to Automatic, as expected. On two machines (run Windows 7; UAC), the two other MSIs deploy fine, but my service fails to install. The event log gives an event ID of 102, which appears to be a permissions problem: The install of application "Package Name" from policy "Policy Name" failed. The error was The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it. However, all three packages come from the same share linked through UNC, so this is unlikely. My guess is that UAC is the problem; that the service requires additional permissions. Do I need to alter the MSI somehow?

  • Executed PHP files are stale unitl "touched" (Symlinked NFS mount as web root)

    We have a PHP application that has 3 web servers (running Nginx and Apache). The web server's directory root are symlinked directories that point to an NFS mount. For example: web01 has an NFS mount at /data/webapp, which is symlinked to /home/webapp. Apache serves content from /home/webapp/www. We also use ACP for our PHP opcode cache. When we deploy code, we SCP an archive file to the NFS server and extract it. Since upgrading RedHat 6, when we deploy our code the webserver execute "stale" PHP files until touch is run on the PHP files. We thought that APC might be causing a problem, but the issue exists, even after clearing the opcode cache. Any ideas on how to diagnose why the stale PHP code is being executed?

  • Deploying ASP.Net MVC 4 application to IIS 6 - Bundles are not working

    We have a ASP.Net MVC 4 application we are trying to deploy to a Windows 2003 machine running IIS 6. We have it running on a separate app pool and it is setup to use asp.net 4.0. We have a Wildcard application mapping to aspnet_isapi.dll which was required to get the page to appear. The problem we've ran into now is that the bundling which is part of asp.net mvc 4 isn't working. When you try to follow the /js?v=ASDfljkFSDlkjDSF link you get a 404 returned to you. We know it uses extensionless urls but these should be handled by the Wildcard application mapping if I'm not mistaken? Has anyone got this working or have any ideas?

  • How do I make wallpaper fit both monitors in dual monitor setup?

    I am deploying some custom corporate wallpaper as part of a Windows 7 rollout. Some people will be using dual monitors, and the additional monitors may be either 4:3 or widescreen. I want to use the same wallpaper on both screens (i.e. 2 copies of the same wallpaper, not stretched across both.) If I set the background to "stretch", it uses the aspect ratio of the primary monitor to stretch the wallpaper on both monitors. So, for example, if I have a dual monitor setup using a 4:3 TFT as primary and my (widescreen) laptop LCD as secondary - the image shows on the laptop LCD in 4:3, with a black stripe down either side. I've only noticed this as an issue with my "custom" wallpaper. Both the default MS wallpaper and the built in Lenovo wallpaper don't seem to have this issue. Is this by using "trickery" such as using an image larger than the largest resolution you will have and centering it? (i.e. so you crop out part of the image.) Or can this be done "properly"? I don't want to use 3rd party software to do this, but would happily do a bit of Powershell scripting if this would solve the issue. Thanks in advance, Ben
