• Hiring a Junior Developer, What should I ask?

  We are currently hiring a junior developer to help me out, as I have more projects than I can currently manage. I have never hired anyone who wasn't a friend or at least an acquaintance. I have a phone interview with the only applicant that actually stood out to me (on paper), but I have never done this before. Our projects are all high scalability, data intensive web applications that process millions of transactions an hour, across multiple servers and clients. To be language/stack specific, we use ASP.Net MVC2, WebForms and C# 4, MSSQL 2008 R2, all running atop Windows Server 2008 R2 What should I ask him? How should I structure the phone call?

• Ubuntu 11.10 cannot boot. It stucks at BusyBox

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10. An hour ago I had my laptop Sony Vaio VPCEB1S1E running. I saw there are updates to install and I installed them. Turned off the laptop and now when I want to turn it on. It loads until BusyBox v1.18.4 appear. I've saw what the people suggest in other askubuntu topics. I've booted Puppy Linux from USB, repaired the partition where the Ubuntu is installed. Rebooted and nothing changed. I saw other suggestions like writing "exit" in the command line when the BusyBox comes. This didn't help neither. I love the Ubuntu OS, but these days I get similar problem with not able to boot OS. The last times I could repair it with Gparted, but then it wasn't problem with the BusyBox, it was something missing in the OS, like "cannot boot /". The same problem occurred on an older version of Ubuntu 10.10 and there I've repaired it again with Gparted.

• Big label generator

  Sometimes I write blog posts mainly so that I can find stuff when I need it later. This is such a blog post. Of late I have been writing lots of deployment scripts and I am fan of putting big labels into deployment scripts (which, these days, reside in SSDT) so one can easily see what’s going on as they execute. Here’s such an example from my current project: which results in this being displayed when the script is run: In case you care….PM_EDW is the name of one of our databases. • Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition

  Have got a new kickn server as new DEV machine It has got two 3ware 9650 Cached Controllers with 8 x 300gig Velociraptor Drives First Problem was the 9.5.1.1 drivers Had to press F8 as soon as the Win 2008 r2 server cd started to load. Once in Adavanced Startup options Disable Driver Signing options Next Issue was I got everything running and accidently selected wrong raid part to do install once I restarted All I would get after waiting the 10 mins for the reboot to start & loading the driver was "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition"  Finally after about 1 hour I removed all drives apart from the 2 needed for system part on cont 0 deleted system part and recreated this RAID1 mirror. (ALso make sure all USB drives are out on boot..only add them when browsing  the driver to be added )  Restarted loaded driver selected install and Once system is up I will go back and add drives and new parts on both controllers AT least I did not get stuck for a day as is the norm..lol

• Ubuntu 14.04.1 will not load - stops in tty1

  I was following some "guides" on how to clean my system and have cleaned it so well that it doesn't work anymore. Example: in synaptic, I completely removed all packages in "Not installed: residual configuration" and a ton of other packages I "don't need". I know this has probably been asked a trillion times but I really need to find out how to get back to the working OS I had about two hours ago. One hour of googling has not helped me, so I am asking here. When I start Ubuntu, usually nothing happens for quite some time and then tty1 starts. I can log in normally, but I don't know how to proceed from there. I can do: less /var/log/apt/history.log and get a log, but I don't know how to get started with this...

• Should I be paid for time spent learning a framework?

  To give light to the situation: I am currently one of two programmers working in a small startup software company. Part of my job requires me to learn a Web development framework that I am not currently familiar with. I get paid by the hour. So the question is: Is it wholly ethical to spend multiple hours of the day reading through documentation and tutorials and be paid for this time where I am not actively developing for our product? Or should the bulk of this learning be done at home, or otherwise off hours, to allow for more full-on development of our application during the work day?

• Screen goes nuts and unreadable

  Running Ubuntu 10.10 in its own partition, also have Oracle Virtualbox 4 with Windows XP. Because i previously had a problem with a dark screen when i let the laptop on and i didn't use it for a long while i had set Power settings to Never sleep, never let the Display sleep. Monitor on install set to Laptop resolution 1400 by 1050, refresh rate 60 Hz, rotation Normal. The problem was when the computer was left on and i returned after about an hour, the screen was unreadable, similar to what used to happen to graphics cards before multisync became normal. So it appears as though the graphics card was asked to use a resolution it couldn't handle and went nuts. I had to power off the system, on restart everything was fine. Thanks for any suggestions. • Installing 12.04 Ubuntu Studio on VMware Workstation 7, won't install VMware Tools

  I'm attempting to install Ubuntu Studio 12.04 on my laptop by using VMware Workstation 7.1.5, and I've encountered a problem. The install goes well until the installation of Ubuntu has completed and the installation of VMware Tools starts; after that it just stops. I have waited about an hour and a half and nothing has changed. The installation is on VMware Easy Install, and I am running Windows Vista 32-bit with 3 GB system RAM and 2 GB of RAM on the virtual machine. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

  My laptop housing my life in entirety decided to go south this last weekend, cant blame it because I wanted it to do things that not even normal people :)  but it corrupted and could not get it going no matter what I tried. Imagining what I would loose (my POC's, Couple of VM's and lots and lots of documentation) pushed me to try anything short of reinstall. • How should I log time spent on multiple tasks?

  In Joel's blog on evidence based scheduling he suggests making estimates based on the smallest unit of work and logging extra work back to the original task. The problem I'm now experiencing is that I'll have create object A with subtask method A which creates object B and test all of the above. I create tasks for each of these that seems to be resulting in ok-ish estimates (need practice), but when I go to log work I find that I worked on 4 tasks at once because I tweak method A and find a bug in the test and refactor object B all while coding it. How should I go about logging this work? should I say I spent, for example, 2 hours on each of the 4 tasks I worked on in the 8 hour day?
