  • Problem Using POI To Set CellStyleProperty With HSSFCellUtil

    I have a Java class which uses Apache POI to generate reports in Excel. When I run the Java class from my IDE or command prompt, I only see warning messages from LOG4J as below: log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.apache.commons.beanutils.converters.BooleanConverter). log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly. log4j:WARN See http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/faq.html#noconfig for more info. Despite the warning messages, the report was generated successfully. But when I run it from my web app, which uses JSP and submits the form to a Servlet which calls the Java class, the Java class seems to have problems setting the style properties to the cell. Below are the Java code and also the stack trace. I'm testing this on a Standalone OC4J and the IDE which I'm using is Oracle's JDeveloper. And the Java JDK is 1.4.2. I've been looking high and low the whole day yesterday but can't seem to find out why. The default GlassFish 3 logging format of is very annoying, much too long.     JavaScript Sucks. Yes, I said it. Microsoft's announcement of TypeScript got me thinking today. Is this a step in the right direction? It sounds like it fixes a lot of problems with JavaScript development. But is it really just duct tape and super glue for a programming model that needs to be replaced?I have had a love hate relationship with JavaScript, like most developers who would prefer avoiding client side code. I started doing web development over 10 years ago and I have done some pretty cool stuff with JavaScript. It has came a long ways and is the universal standard these days for client side scripting in the web browser. Over the years the browsers have become much faster at processing JavaScript. Now people are even trying to use it on the server side via node.js. OK, so why do I think JavaScript sucks?Well first off, as an enterprise web application developer, I don't like any scripting or dynamic languages. I like code that compiles for lots of obvious reasons. It is messy to code with and lacks all kinds of modern programming features. We spend a lot of time trying to hack it to do things it was never really designed for.Ever try to use different jQuery based plugins that require conflicting jQuery versions? Yeah, that sucks.How about trying to figure out how to make 20 javascript include files load quicker as one request? Yeah that sucks too.Performance? Let me just point to the old Facebook mobile app made with JS & HTML5. It sucked. Enough said.How about unit testing JavaScript? I've never tried it, but it sure sounds like fun.My biggest problem with JavaScript is code security. If I make some awesome product, there is no way to protect my code. How can we expect game makers to write apps in 100% JavaScript and HTML5 if they can't protect their intellectual property?There are compiling tools like Closure, unit test frameworks, minify, coffee script, TypeScript and a bunch of other tools. But to me, they all try to make up for the weaknesses and problems with JavaScript. JavaScript is a mess and we spend a lot of time trying to work around all of it's problems. It is possible to program in Silverlight, Java or Flash and run that in the browser instead of JavaScript, but they all have their own problems and lack universal mobile support. I believe Microsoft's new TypeScript is a step forward for JavaScript, but I think we need to start planning to go a whole different direction. We need a new universal client side programming model, because JavaScript sucks.

  • How should data be passed between client-side Javascript and C# code behind an ASP.NET app?

    I'm looking for the most efficient / standard way of passing data between client-side Javascript code and C# code behind an ASP.NET application. I've been using the following methods to achieve this but they all feel a bit of a fudge. To pass data from Javascript to the C# code is by setting hidden ASP variables and triggering a postback: <asp:HiddenField ID="RandomList" runat="server" /> function SetDataField(data) { document.getElementById('<%=RandomList.ClientID%>').value = data; } Then in the C# code I collect the list: protected void GetData(object sender, EventArgs e) { var _list = RandomList.value; } Going back the other way I often use either ScriptManager to register a function and pass it data during Page_Load: ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), "Set","get("Test();",true); or I add attributes to controls before a post back or during the initialization or pre-rendering stages: Btn.Attributes.Add("onclick", "DisplayMessage("Hello");"); These methods have served me well and do the job, but they just dont feel complete. Is there a more standard way of passing data between client side Javascript and C# backend code? Ive seen some posts like this one that describe HtmlElement class; is this something I should look into?

  • Why the recent shift to removing/omitting semicolons from Javascript?

    It seems to be fashionable recently to omit semicolons from Javascript. There was a blog post a few years ago emphasising that in Javascript, semicolons are optional and the gist of the post seemed to be that you shouldn't bother with them because they're unnecessary. The post, widely cited, doesn't give any compelling reasons not to use them, just that leaving them out has few side-effects. Even GitHub has jumped on the no-semicolon bandwagon, requiring their omission in any internally-developed code, and a recent commit to the zepto.js project by its maintainer has removed all semicolons from the codebase. His chief justifications were: it's a matter of preference for his team; less typing Are there other good reasons to leave them out? Frankly I can see no reason to omit them, and certainly no reason to go back over code to erase them. It also goes against (years of) recommended practice, which I don't really buy the "cargo cult" argument for. So, why all the recent semicolon-hate? Is there a shortage looming? Or is this just the latest Javascript fad?

    Possible Duplicate: How good is it for SEO if you have a widget that lives on other sites? On my website I offer an option to let users embed information from my site with some kind of "homepage widget". If a user wants to embed it in his website, he basically has to add one line of Javascript to his HTML files like this: <script src="http://mysite.com/myscript.php?some_options_here"></script> Inside the widget, I export some content from my website and of course create a link back to my website. This is done in Javascript with document.write. document.writeln("My great exported content"); document.writeln('<a href="http://mysite.com?ref=widget>Check mysite.com</a>'); I have Google Analytics set up to track whether the links in there get clicked, and they do. Now I am asking myself if Google recognizes these links as valid backlinks from the embedding domain. I know that Googlebot can parse and execute Javascript, but I have not found any references whether these links also count as "normal" backlinks.

    I'm currently integrating Facebook with my website using the Javascript SDK. I've got the login portion working well. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is if there is a way to tell if it was the first time the user logged into my website using their Facebook credientials. I tried subscribing to auth.login, but that didn't seem to have any information about that. Is there a flag anywhere that lets me know this? Or another way to go about looking this up? I realize I could do some server side code, but I'd prefer to stay away from that if possible. Thanks in advance, Brandon

  • Logging on to two sites simultaneously

    I want to log on to two sites simultaneously to enable a single sign on solution. We have a smallish wiki that is created with Apple wiki and we have an intranet site on a aspx cms system by Elcom. Both use Active Directory for credentials. Currently they are on different domains, but we could enable a rewrite using our load-balancer (Citrix Netscaler) or IIS. These sites are on different servers, one a mysterious Mac system and the other an IIS v6.0 on windows 2003. Now I am almost certain that a reverse proxy set up will solve this but I really just need someone to agree that this solves this issue, and if there are things I should look out for what they might be. I just want to have an invisible log on screen in an iframe and enter clone the user name and password using javascript.

It took a little while to get used to it and can occasionally require some clicking when visiting a new site to investigate why the site's not working and where I need to allow javascript from. Is the extra security worth it? Some of the controversy is discussed here. I suppose it boils down to a matter of whether javascript is a genuine threat to your computer or not. Any thoughts on this?

  • IE8 Refuses to run Javascript from Local Hard Drive

    I have a problem that just started at work recently and the network manager is certain he did not change anything with the group policy. Anyways, here is a detailed description of the problem. My machine is Windows XP SP3, and I use IE8 to browse. We have McAffee anti-virus software that I am unable to configure. I use the following file to test... <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>Javascript Test</title> </head> <body> <script type="text/javascript"> document.write("<h1>PASS</h1>"); </script> <noscript> <h1>FAIL</h1> </noscript> </body> </html> When I open this file from the C: drive, it fails every time. If I execute it anywhere else (local/remote web server or on a mapped network drive), it works just fine. When I am simply browsing the Internet, Javascript on web sites works just fine. It is only failing on files running from my C: drive. Additionally, I have had a couple other programmers in the department try this file on their C: drive, and it works fine for them. So I don't believe it is a group policy thing. I need to fix this because I do extensive testing from my C: drive, and I am accustomed to doing so. I don't want to get into the habit of moving files to a different drive just to test. Things I have tried: Enabled "Allow Active Content to Run Files on My Computer" in Options | Advanced | Security Enabled "Allow Active Scripting" in Options | Security | Custom Level Verified that "Script" was not checked as disabled in Developer Toolbar Added localhost to Trusted Sites in Options Disabled McAffee completely (momentarily, with help from network admin) Used an older DOCTYPE in my test HTML page Re-installed IE8 completely Ran regsvr32 on the JScript.dll Slammed keyboard I am sure that there is a setting somewhere that will fix this problem, possibly in the registry. I would not be surprised if it was related to the developer toolbar. At this point I do not know where else to look. Can anyone help me resolve this problem? EDIT: Regardless of the bounty, this issue is still ongoing.

I would like to try to stop the glimps of the banner, when the page first loads, any help?

It works when I load jquery from remote. Like <script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.5.1/jquery.min.js"type="text/javascript" ></script></head> I dont know why. Second, I can't load my own-created javascript to my html file, say I create a javascript like layout. Js and I try to load it like this in my child html file, which, by the way, inherits from the base html. <body><script src="layout.js" type="text/javascript"></script></body>, And it doesn't work at all, the only way it works I have tried is that I put the actual javascript in the body of my base html file.   • Eclipse > Javascript > Code highlighting not working with Object Notation

    I am using Eclipse Helios with PDT, and when I am editing JavaScript files with the default JavaScript Editor (JSDT), code highlighting (Mark Occurrences) is not working for half of the code, for example JSON-style (or Object Literal if you will) declarations. Little example: Foo = {}; Foo.Bar = Foo.Bar || {}; Foo.Bar = { bar: function(str) { alert(str) }, baz: function(str) { this.bar(str); // This bar *is* highlighted though } }; Foo.Bar.baz('text'); No Bar, bar or baz is highlighted. For now, I humbly edit the JavaScript part of projects in Notepad++ because it just highlights every occurrence of whatever is currently selected. Is there a common practice for Eclipse JavaScript developers to get code highlighting work correctly, using the popular Object Literal notation? An option or update I missed? -update- I have found that code highlighting depends on the code being properly outlined. Altough commonly used, Object Literal outlining still seems rare in javascript editors. the Spket Javascript Editor does partial Object Literal outlining, and the Aptana Javascript Editor does full Object Literal outlining. But both loses other important functionality. A quest for the editor with the least loss of functionality is currently in progress in this question.

  • loading remote page into DOM with javascript

    I am trying to write a web widget which will allow users to display customized information (from my website) in their own web page. The mechanism I want to use (for creating the web widget) is javascript. So basically, I want to be able to write some javascript code like this (this is what the end user copies into their HTML page, to get my widget displayed in their page) <script type="text/javascript"> /* javascript here to fetch page from remote url and insert into DOM */ </script> I have two questions: how do I write a javascript code to fetch the page from the remote url? Ideally this will be PLAIN javascript (i.e. not using jQuery etc - since I dont want to force the user to get third party scripts jQuery which may conflict with other scripts on their page etc) The page I am fetching contains inline javascript, which gets executed in an body.onLoad event, as well as other functions which are used in response to user actions - my questions are: i). will the body.onLoad event be triggered for the retrieved document?. ii). If the retrieved page is dumped directly into the DOM, then the document will contain two <body> sections, which is no longer valid (X)HTML - however, I need the body.onLoad event to be triggered for the page to be setup correctly, and I also need the other functions in the retrieved page, for the retrieved page to be able to respond to the user interaction. Any suggestions/tips on how I can solve these problems?

  • Assigning console.log to another object (Webkit issue)

    I wanted to keep my logging statements as short as possible while preventing console from being accessed when it doesn't exist; I came up with the following solution: var _ = {}; if (console) { _.log = console.debug; } else { _.log = function() { } } To me, this seems quite elegant, and it works great in Firefox 3.6 (including preserving the line numbers that make console.debug more useful than console.log). But it doesn't work in Safari 4. [Update: Or in Chrome. So the issue seems to be a difference between Firebug and the Webkit console.] If I follow the above with console.debug('A') _.log('B'); the first statement works fine in both browsers, but the second generates a "TypeError: Type Error" in Safari. Is this just a difference between how Firebug and the Safari Web Developer Tools implement console? If so, it is VERY annoying on Apple's Webkit's part. Binding the console function to a prototype and then instantiating, rather than binding it directly to the object, doesn't help. I could, of course, just call console.debug from an anonymous function assigned to _.log, but then I'd lose my line numbers. Any other ideas?

  • Using Transaction Logging to Recover Post-Archived Essbase data

    Data recovery is typically performed by restoring data from an archive.  Data added or removed since the last archive took place can also be recovered by enabling transaction logging in Essbase.  Transaction logging works by writing transactions to a log store.  The information in the log store can then be recovered by replaying the log store entries in sequence since the last archive took place.  The following information is recorded within a transaction log entry: Sequence ID Username Start Time End Time Request Type A request type can be one of the following categories: Calculations, including the default calculation as well as both server and client side calculations Data loads, including data imports as well as data loaded using a load rule Data clears as well as outline resets Locking and sending data from SmartView and the Spreadsheet Add-In.  Changes from Planning web forms are also tracked since a lock and send operation occurs during this process. You can use the Display Transactions command in the EAS console or the query database MAXL command to view the transaction log entries. Enabling Transaction Logging Transaction logging can be enabled at the Essbase server, application or database level by adding the TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION essbase.cfg setting.  The following is the TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION syntax: TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION [appname [dbname]] LOGLOCATION NATIVE ENABLE | DISABLE Note that you can have multiple TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION entries in the essbase.cfg file.  For example: TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION Hyperion/trlog NATIVE ENABLE TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION Sample Hyperion/trlog NATIVE DISABLE The first statement will enable transaction logging for all Essbase applications, and the second statement will disable transaction logging for the Sample application.  As a result, transaction logging will be enabled for all applications except the Sample application. A location on a physical disk other than the disk where ARBORPATH or the disk files reside is recommended to optimize overall Essbase performance. Configuring Transaction Log Replay Although transaction log entries are stored based on the LOGLOCATION parameter of the TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION essbase.cfg setting, copies of data load and rules files are stored in the ARBORPATH/app/appname/dbname/Replay directory to optimize the performance of replaying logged transactions.  The default is to archive client data loads, but this configuration setting can be used to archive server data loads (including SQL server data loads) or both client and server data loads. To change the type of data to be archived, add the TRANSACTIONLOGDATALOADARCHIVE configuration setting to the essbase.cfg file.  Note that you can have multiple TRANSACTIONLOGDATALOADARCHIVE entries in the essbase.cfg file to adjust settings for individual applications and databases. Replaying the Transaction Log and Transaction Log Security Considerations To replay the transactions, use either the Replay Transactions command in the EAS console or the alter database MAXL command using the replay transactions grammar.  Transactions can be replayed either after a specified log time or using a range of transaction sequence IDs. The default when replaying transactions is to use the security settings of the user who originally performed the transaction.  However, if that user no longer exists or that user's username was changed, the replay operation will fail. Instead of using the default security setting, add the REPLAYSECURITYOPTION essbase.cfg setting to use the security settings of the administrator who performs the replay operation.  REPLAYSECURITYOPTION 2 will explicitly use the security settings of the administrator performing the replay operation.  REPLAYSECURITYOPTION 3 will use the administrator security settings if the original user’s security settings cannot be used. Removing Transaction Logs and Archived Replay Data Load and Rules Files Transaction logs and archived replay data load and rules files are not automatically removed and are only removed manually.  Since these files can consume a considerable amount of space, the files should be removed on a periodic basis. The transaction logs should be removed one database at a time instead of all databases simultaneously.  The data load and rules files associated with the replayed transactions should be removed in chronological order from earliest to latest.  In addition, do not remove any data load and rules files with a timestamp later than the timestamp of the most recent archive file. Partitioned Database Considerations For partitioned databases, partition commands such as synchronization commands cannot be replayed.  When recovering data, the partition changes must be replayed manually and logged transactions must be replayed in the correct chronological order. If the partitioned database includes any @XREF commands in the calc script, the logged transactions must be selectively replayed in the correct chronological order between the source and target databases.     More than 20 million websites nowadays are running jQuery and more than 1/5 of the top million websites are also doing so. What if we, as designers and developers, could take advantage of locally cached JavaScript libraries like jQuery, Prototype, script.aculo.us, etc? Wouldn't it be great if we could provide users with faster websites and experiences? EDIT: My apologies, I ment to ask how hould it be if browsers hosted JavaScript frameworks, not support them. Actually, there's no sense in my previous question. Sorry for that.

  • Is there an alternative to javascript for the web that can do multi-threading and synchronous execution?

    I would like to program web applications as I do with desktop programming languages, where the code is synchronously executed and browser doesn't freeze when doing loops. Yes I know there are workarounds using callbacks and setTimeout, but they are all workarounds after all and they don't give the same flexibility when programming in the orthodox way I've been looking at Dart as a possibilty, but I can't seem to find where it says it can do either of these. The same with haxe, emscript, and the hundreds of other converters that try to circumvent javascript. In the end it gets converted to Javascript so you ultimately have to be conscious about asynchronous/multi threading.

I'm willing to try a prototype project. What are the steps that I could take towards implementing such a thing?
