• Benefits of classic OOP over Go-like language

  I've been thinking a lot about language design and what elements would be necessary for an "ideal" programming language, and studying Google's Go has led me to question a lot of otherwise common knowledge. Specifically, Go seems to have all of the interesting benefits from object oriented programming without actually having any of the structure of an object oriented language. There are no classes, only structures; there is no class/structure inheritance -- only structure embedding. There aren't any hierarchies, no parent classes, no explicit interface implementations. Instead, type casting rules are based on a loose system similar to duck-typing, such that if a struct implements the necessary elements of a "Reader" or a "Request" or an "Encoding", then you can cast it and use it as one. Does such a system obsolete the concept of OOP? Or is there something about OOP as implemented in C++ and Java and C# that is inherently more capable, more maintainable, somehow more powerful that you have to give up when moving to a language like Go? What benefit do you have to give up to gain the simplicity that this new paradigm represents?

• Using prefix incremented loops in C#

  Back when I started programming in college, a friend encouraged me to use the prefix incrementation operator ++i instead of the postfix i++, citing that there was a slight chance of better performance with no real chance of a downside. I realize this is true in C++, and it's become a general habit that I continue to do. I'm led to believe that it makes little to no difference when used in a loop in C#, regardless of data type. Apparently the ++ operator can't be overridden. Nevertheless, I like the appearance more, and don't see a direct downside to it. It did astonish a coworker just a moment ago though, he made the (fairly logical) assumption that my loop would terminate early as a result. He's a self-taught programmer, and apparently never came across the C++ convention. That made me question whether or not the equivalent behavior of pre- and post-fix increment and decrement operators in loops is well known enough. Is it acceptable for me to continue using ++i in looping constructs because of style preference, even though it has no real performance benefit? Or is it likely to cause confusion amongst other programmers? Note: This is assuming the ++i convention is used consistently throughout all code.

• BCM2046B1 Bluetooth Dongle connection problem

  Well i have a Blueooth dongle with an BCM2046 IC intrregated, my problem is that when i connect it, Ubuntu recognize it, but it don't work whe i try to scan or scan the PC from other device, i replaced the default Gnome Bluetooth manager and i installed Blueman, but the problem presists. • How do I get my programs to communicate with each other

  I'm basically just getting started with programming. The problem I have with progressing is that I have a hard time learning stuff just for the sake of knowing them - I do better when there's a problem to be solved or a task to be completed so I can learn 'on the job'. So I'm interested in starting some interesting project. I know the basics of Python, Java, Matlab and some C++ aswell and I know enough about microcontrollers to make LED blink etc. The type of stuff I'm looking for is for example scraping some weather forecast site (with Python) and outputting the chance of rain to a LCD display, or a program that makes chrome open and log in to facebook if I say "HAL, time for facebook", or more generally, a program that reads serial/USB input, looks for certain sequences and sends instructions to some other program if it finds one. Do you open some kind of shared stream in which one program reads and one writes? What do I need to read up on to do accomplish this myself? I have no experience with linux or the linux terminal, but looking over peoples shoulders makes me suspect that's what people use. Is that correct?

• Why is my fresh install of 12.04 running slow?

  Hey guys I'm a new linux user, I figured it would be the best for the laptop I just purchased because it's said to be faster than Windows 7. I'm currently dual-booting with Windows 7 Professial and Ubuntu 12.04. The laptop I am using is the LG X Note P210 Specs: Intel Core i5 470UM Dual Core clocked at 1.33GHz 12.5" HD LED LCD Screen at 1366 by 768 4GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHz RAM Integrated Intel HD Graphics Card 4 Cell Battery with 3150mAh It comes loaded Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit, it runs fine on that but my Ubuntu 12.04 runs slower than it and I don't understand why, it definitely has decent specs to run even a 64-bit operating system and do some gaming. Granted I know it's not the best but for a laptop it does the job so Ubuntu should work especially since it's said to make older units with worse specs run even better. I'm not all that familiar with coding and all so what are things I can do to optimize speed without overclocking? Boot up is fine, its program response time I believe, once Im in the actual OS, it lags, slows down, apps stop working, take forever to load up apps.

• Unity calendar lens not showing events in Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm trying to get proper/useful calendar integration into Ubuntu 12.04. I have a Google Calendar (& account) and I want to be able to use this without opening the browser. I want to get the Unity Calendar lens working, so that it shows events coming up, and it allows me a quick way to add new events. However, after installing it, it does not find any events, nor allow me to add a new event. Note that I've installed Lightning 1.4, Evolution mirror 0.2.3, Evolution, and unity-calendar lens. I've also installed Calendar-indicator. I suspect that somehow the lens is not getting the calendar information from thunderbird via evolution. A bit of searching around led me to try this command: /usr/lib/calendar-lens/calendar-lens-daemon.py. • Effect of using dedicated NVidia card instead of Intel HD4000

  Short version: Can someone please advise me of the effect of adding a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M card to an Ubuntu laptop in terms of power consumption and performance gains/losses when doing general productivity tasks and booting up. Also, how good are the closed source, open source, and Bumblebee drivers for these newer cards compared to support for the Intel HD4000? Long version/Background, if any info here is helpful: I'm thinking of ordering a laptop from PC Specialist (a UK company who actually sell machines without Windows pre-installed) with the following specifications: Genesis IV: 15.6" AUO Matte 95% Gamut LED Widescreen (1920x1080) Intel® Core™i5 Dual Core Mobile Processor i5-3210M (2.50GHz) 3MB 4GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (1 x 4GB) 120GB INTEL® 520 SERIES SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW) Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® N135 802.11N (150Mbps) + BLUETOOTH Now, as I want this laptop mainly for work and not for games, I would be more than content with the HD4000 integrated chip which comes with the processor. However, for compatibility reasons, I am not able to get the specs I want unless I choose a NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M 1GB graphics card, which I don't have a great deal of use for. I'm willing to buy it, however, as it's still cheaper than any other laptop with the specs I want. However, I know that Linux power management isn't fantastic with open-source graphics drivers, and I don't much about Bumblebee. Basically, whilst I'm happy to 'tolerate' the card being there, I don't want to experience any negative effects on the rest of my system (battery, performance etc) and if there are likely to be any, I might reconsider my purchase. • Problem with wake after suspend using USB remote.

  Hi, I'm a linux newbie looking for some help. I'm currently setting up an XBMC HTPC using a laptop and 10.10 and all works great except for waking from resume using the power button on the remote. The suspend works from remote works fine as does the resume using the power button on the laptop. I've checked /proc/acpi/wakeup which initially showed the following. It simply refuses to wakeup from the remote. The USB receiver shows no activity LED while suspended. Suspend/resume from the remote works fine from Windows 7 so I know the laptop is ok with it. • Using HTML5 Today part 4&ndash;What happened to XHTML?

  This is the fourth entry in a series of descriptions & demos from the “Using HTML5 Today” user group presentation. For practical purposes, the original XHTML standard is a historical footnote, although XHTML transitional will probably live on forever in the default web page templates of old web page editors. The original XHTML spec was released in 2000, on the heels of the HTML 4.01 spec.  The plan was to move web development away from HTML to the more formal, rigorous approach that XHTML offered, but it was built on a principle that conflicts with the history and culture of the Internet: XHTML introduced the idea of Draconian Error Handling, which essentially means that invalid XML markup on a page will cause a page to stop rendering. There is a transitional mode offered in the original XHTML spec, but the goal was to move to D.E.H.  You can see the result by changing the doc type for a document to “application/xhtml+xml” - for my class example we change this setting in the web.config file: <staticContent> <remove fileExtension=".html" /> <mimeMap fileExtension=".html" mimeType="application/xhtml+xml" /> </staticContent> With the new strict syntax a simple error, in this case a duplicate </td> tag, can cause a critical page error: While XHTML became very popular in the ensuing decade, the Strict form of XHTML never achieved widespread use. Draconian Error Handling was one of the factors that led in time to the creation of the WHATWG, or Web Hypertext Application Technology Group.  WHATWG contributed to the eventually disbanding of the XHTML 2.0 working group and the W3C’s move to embrace the HTML5 standard. For developers who long for XML markup the W3C HTML5 standard includes an XHTML5 syntax. • How to Effectively Create Bullet Patterns

  I'm currently creating a top-down shooter like Touhou. The most important factor of the game is that there are many diverse patterns and ways at which bullets are generated and shot at the player, see this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nb5Ohbt1Sg#start=0:60;end=9:53; At the moment, I'm using a class "Pattern" which has a series of steps on moving and shooting. However, I feel this method is quite laborous as I have to create a new Pattern for each attack and perhaps new Bullet classes that will implement a certain behavior. This question received a comment suggesting I should look into BulletML for easy creation and storage of bullets with a specific pattern. It looks decent, but it led me to wonder, what other solutions do you have that I should take into consideration? Update My current design is as follows: An example of an implemented pattern: My GigasPattern first executes a teleport which moves Alice to a certain point (X, Y) on the screen. After this is completed, the pattern starts using the Mover to move the sprite around (whereas teleporting has separate effects and animation). These are of no concern, really, as they are quite simple. The Shooter also creates various Attacks, which are classes again that the Shooter can use to create various patterns of bullets, much like the one in the question I posted. Once the Mover has reached it's destination, both it and the shooter stop and return to an inactive state. The pattern completes, is removed by the AI and a new one gets chosen.

• Ubuntu Tools for recovering data from damaged USB Flash Drive ~ 10 Gb

  I have technical issues with my USB Flash Drive - JetFlash®V15 (TS16GJFV15) It's very critical situation because I can not see the data from it and I should get a way to recover them ASAP. So, in general, I have connected Non-stop that USB Flash Disk at my laptop. Was appear Power surges and when I was coming back, I saw that problem with it. Details regarding JetFlash®V15 (in present): - when I connect it on USP slot, the led is working intermittent and later on remain with constant light. - if I inspect the computer drivers, I found "Generic USB Flash Disk" (when the stick it's connected). - if I inspect "Properties", I can see next details: --- Type: unknown (application/octet-stream) --- Size: unknown --- Volume: unknown --- Accessed: unknown --- Modified: unknown I inspected that stick on 2 different computers (as well in different different USB Ports) and was the same problem, I can not see the content. I was checking with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 OS, but without success. With both OS was working before this issue. I'll appreciate an answer which will solve the problem, not an answer which will certify the problem. What I have to do, to recover the information form it (nearly 10 Gb)? I'm looking forward to be guided from a technical expert.

• Ubuntu Boot Slow - Late Drive Access

  So I just installed Ubuntu on a brand new Samsung 840 Pro SSD and have noticed that it is slower than expected. The LED access light doesn't start blinking until after 20 seconds or so have passed, after which the boot up seems to actually start. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I have Windows 7 installed on a separate SSD and use Windows Loader as the main loader. Windows Loader points to GRUB2, from which I then start Ubuntu up. The 20 seconds count that I mentioned earlier starts AFTER I select Ubuntu 14.04.1 from the GRUB2 menu. Any help is appreciated. EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have only one partition for / and /home. I intend on using a shared NTFS drive for my documents and other personal files, so I had no need for the /home. I did not make a /swap since I have 12 GB of RAM. I also did not make a /boot since I was told that it's not really necessary in my case.

• why doesn't my computer resume after sleeping overnight?

  i'm having a weird, weird bug that's been haunting me since 11.10. if i listen to music or watch a video and my computer automatically goes to sleep at night, it won't properly resume in the morning. otherwise, suspend and resume works just fine. what happens is that the wi-fi and bluetooth indicator (that turns from white to orange when suspending) stays orange, the display doesn't turn on, and the only option i have is to hard reset the machine. here's what i've tried so far: installing (and uninstalling and reinstalling) laptop-mode-tools switching the proprietary wireless driver (broadcom-wl) to the open source one (brcmsmac & bcma) and back unloading (and blacklisting) all bluetooth modules (rfcomm, btusb, bnep, bluetooth) and stopping (# stop bluetooth) and disabling (# echo 'manual' /etc/init/bluetooth.override) the bluetooth service creating a custom pm sleep action as suggested here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11926504 not watching youtube / any stuff that uses flash before going to sleep (i have flashblock, and i checked $ ps aux | grep flash) because i suspected flash to be the culprit trying out different versions of fglrx (the one from the repos, then installing the latest one from amd's site via generated .deb files, then back to the official ones) none of these worked. i remember back in the days of 10.04, there was a gconf key called network sleep: i thought about disabling that, since re-enabling the wireless card seems to be the problem (according to the indicator led), but the option appears to be missing from gnome 3 (unity-2d, whatever). does anyone have any ideas? thanks, bamdad

• Why don't languages use explicit fall-through on switch statements?

  I was reading Why do we have to use break in switch?, and it led me to wonder why implicit fall-through is allowed in some languages (such as PHP and JavaScript), while there is no support (AFAIK) for explicit fall-through. It's not like a new keyword would need to be created, as continue would be perfectly appropriate, and would solve any issues of ambiguity for whether the author meant for a case to fall through. The currently supported form is: switch (s) { case 1: ... break; case 2: ... //ambiguous, was break forgotten? case 3: ... break; default: ... break; } Whereas it would make sense for it to be written as: switch (s) { case 1: ... break; case 2: ... continue; //unambiguous, the author was explicit case 3: ... break; default: ... break; } For purposes of this question lets ignore the issue of whether or not fall-throughs are a good coding style. Are there any languages that exist that allow fall-through and have made it explicit? Are there any historical reasons that switch allows for implicit fall-through instead of explicit?

  Yesterday Google released an updated Gmail application for Android 2.2 phones that supports the Priority Inbox feature—and more importantly, allows you to change your notifications to only alert you for important email. The idea is that it learns over time, so if you send a lot of emails back and forth with somebody, it will know that they are probably important—you can manually adjust the settings as well. To update the Gmail application, you’ll want to head into the Market and access Menu –> Downloads, where you should see Gmail in the list, and it should let you update from there.   hi people i hope you can help a little bit , i appreciate your time look: i have a this desktop i7 2600, 8gb ram ddr3, board intel dh61ww, Geforce Nvidia GT520-cn 2Gb ddr3, i just install ubuntu 64bits 12.04 kernel 3.2.0-23-generic , i want to setup two monitors samsung led 22" and get start mi video card 1) i download and installed nvidia driver 295.59 and also try with 302.17 to apt-update and upgrade, apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r), apt-get remove --purge nvidia*, apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, vim /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf blacklist vga16fb blacklist nouveau blacklist rivafb blacklist nvidiafb blacklist rivatv sh NVIDIA.run, sudo service lightdm start, reboot, nvidia-xorgconf 2)after reboot i get 800x600 and nvidia-settings say this. You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. • Why have we got so many Linux distributions? [closed]

  Pointed to from an answer to another question, I came across this graphic, and I'm shocked how many linux distributions currently exist. However, it seems that most of these distributions are forks of already popular distributions with minimal changes, usually limited to themes, wallpapers and buttons. It would still seem easier to create a sub-distribution with the required changes, such as XUbuntu with XFCE4, KUbuntu with KDE4, Fluxbuntu with Fluxbox, etc. In my mind there are a number of problems with having so many distributions - perhaps less security/stability due to smaller group of developers, and also the confusingly vast range of choice for newcomers to Linux. Some reasons that developers might decide to fork are: Specializing on a particular topic (work-related topic - i.e. for a Hospital, etc) An exceptional architecture, that requires a special set of software Use of non-FOSS, proprietary technology, and such So what other reasons are there that have caused so many people decided to create their own distributions? What are the thought processes that have led to this? And are these "valid" reasons - do we need so many distributions? If you can back your experiences up with references that would be great.

• Should I make up my own HTTP status codes? (a la Twitter 420: Enhance Your Calm)

  I'm currently implementing an HTTP API, my first ever. I've been spending a lot of time looking at the Wikipedia page for HTTP status codes, because I'm determined to implement the right codes for the right situations. Listed on that page is a code with number 420, which is a custom code that Twitter used to use for rate limiting. There is already a code for rate limiting, though. It's 429. This led me to wonder why they would set a custom one, when there is already a use case. Is that just being cute? And if so, then which circumstances would make it acceptable to return a different status code, and what, if any problems may clients have with it? I read somewhere that Mozilla doesn't implement the joke 418: I’m a teapot response, which makes me think that clients choose which status codes they implement. If that's true, then I can imagine Twitter's funny little enhance your calm code being problematic. Unless I'm mistaken, and we can appropriate any code number to mean whatever we like, and that only convention dictates that 404 means not found, and 429 means take it easy.

• The (non) Importance of Language

  Working with a variety of clients on EA initiatives one begins to realize that not everyone is a fan of EA. Specifically, they are not a fan of the "a-word". Some organizations have abused this term with creating and assigning the title to just about anyone who demonstrates above average prowess with a particular technology. Other organizations will assign the title to those managers left with no staff after a reorg. Some companies, unfortunately, have simply had a bad go of it with regard to EA...or any "A" for that matter. What we call "EA" is almost irrelevant. But what is not negotiable for those to succeed in business is to manage change. That is what EA is all about. I recall sitting in Zachman training led by himself. He posits the only organizations that don't need EA (or whatever you want to call it) are those that are not changing. My experience suggests those orgs that aren't changing aren't growing. And if you aren't growing, you're dying. Any EA program will not succeed unless there is a desire to change. No desire to change suggests the EA/Advisor/Change Agent should just walk the other way.

• Motivation for service layer (instead of just copying dlls)?

  I'm creating an application which has 2 different UIs so I'm making it with a service layer which I understood is appropriate for such case. However I found myself just creating web methods for every single method I have in the BL layer, so the services basically built from methods that looks like this: return customers_bl.Get_Customer_Prices(customer_id); I understood that a main point of the service layer is to prevent duplication of code so I asked myself - well, why not just import the BL.dll (and the DAL.dll) to the other UI, and whenever making a change re-copy the dll files, it might not be so 'neat', but is the all purpose of the service layer to prevent this? {I know something is wrong in my approach, I'm probably missing the importance of service layer, I'd like to get more motivation to create another layer, especially because as it is I found that many of my BL functions ALREADY looks like: return customers_dal.Get_Customer_Prices(cust_id) which led me to ask: was it really necessary to create the BL just because on several functions I actually have LOGIC inside the BL?} so I'm looking for more motivation to creating ONE MORE layer, I'm sure it's not just to make it more convenient that I won't have to re-copy the dlls on changes? Am I grasping it wrong? Any simple guidelines on how to design service layer (corresponding to all the BL layer functions or not? any simple example?) any enlightenment on the subject?
