• Why is address zero used for null pointer?

  In C (or C++ for that matter), pointers are special if they have the value zero: I am adviced to set pointers to zero after freeing their memory, because it means freeing the pointer again isn't dangerous; when I call malloc it returns a pointer with the value zero if it can't get me memory; I use if (p != 0) all the time to make sure passed pointers are valid etc. But since memory addressing starts at 0, isn't 0 just as a valid address as any other? How can 0 be used for handling null pointers if that is the case? Why isn't a negative number null instead?

• Oracle: Finding Columns with only null values

  I have a table with a lot of columns and a type column. Some columns seem to be always empty for a specific type. I want to create a view for each type and only show the relevant columns for each type. Working under the assumption that if a column has ONLY null values for a specific type, then that columns should not be part of the view, how can you find that out with queries? Is there a SELECT [columnName] FROM [table] WHERE [columnValues] ARE ALL [null] I know I COMPLETELY made it all up above... I'm just trying to get the idea across. Thanks in advance!

• Which is the better way to simulate optional parameters in Java?

  I have a Java method that takes 3 parameters, and I'd like it to also have a 4th "optional" parameter. I know that Java doesn't support optional parameters directly, so I coded in a 4th parameter and when I don't want to pass it I pass null. (And then the method checks for null before using it.) I know this is kind of clunky... but the other way is to overload the method which will result in quite a bit of duplication. Which is the better way to implement optional method parameters in Java: using a nullable parameter, or overloading? And why?

  I'm using Drupal's db_fetch_array to fetch rows from my db_query. However, every row returned is equal to NULL. Typing the query into PHP myadmin works, so I have no idea whats going on. db_num_rows returns the number of rows as well.   Hi, I really don't like to call String.IsNullOrEmpty(str). That makes me need to think "String" class first, then call it on the object "str". I like to call str.IsNullOrEmpty(), which doesn't need me to think "String" class. The problem is that extension method accept null instance to call on, which is not the usual case when you call a normal method. My question what do you think will be a convetion name for extension methods that accept null? For string, that is easy, "IsNullOrEmpty()" (anything that contains "IsNull") sounds good for me. For others, like GetDisplayName(), do we name it as "NullOrGetDisplayName" ?

  For example. Lets say we have a stackpanel on a form. Its full of both Grids and Labels. I want to loop through all the Grids and do some operation on them but leave the Lables intact. The 'Domain null' issue re-appears as soon as I go into the SAP Runtime Workbench. Please can you tell me why it says domain.null and how to resolve it?

  I've been using the SQLite Manager extension for Firefox to edit my Chrome web data file in order to restore my keyword searches, and I think I have everything in place except that when I import a CSV file into a table, (a) it won't import into the actual table because the table doesn't allow null values (b) if I import it into a new table that does allow null values, then all the empty strings end up as null and I have to manually edit the row, type and delete a character, and then it's set to empty string and it's fine So: is there either a way to import the CSV so that empty cells are automatically turned into empty strings instead of null, OR is there a way once a table is imported that has null values to convert it into one that doesn't allow null values, where each formerly null value is the empty string? Here's the db design. table A [id, b_id_1, b_id_2] table B [id, other fields...] b_id_1 and b_id_2 can be NULL if any of them is null, it means NO B records for corresponding FK (there are 2 of them) so (b_id_1,b_id_2) can be (null,null), (100, null), (null, 100_or_any_other_number) etc How in one SQL query both set b_id_1 or b_id_2 to null and delete all rows from B that have this id? What FK design should be applied to the 2 tables? what foreign keys should be added? A - B (FK_1: A.b_id_1 references B.id, FK_2: A.b_id_2 references B.id) and also B-A (FK_3: B.id references A.b_id_1, FK_4: B.id references A.b_id_2) ? But again, setting an A's b_id_1 or A's b_id_2 to null - will it remove any of B's records? I don't think so. So how to do that?

The message displayed is the one returned from the db ie "The value '32/4/1967' is not valid for DateOfBirth.". I tried to enter some break points around the code, and found out that the "value" in attribute is always null when the date is incorrect, but always gets a value if the date is in correct format. The same ( value == null) is passed also in the code generated by the designer. This thing is driving me nuts. Please can anyone help me deal with this? Also if someone can tell me where exactly is the point of entry from the view to the database. Is it related to the model binder? because i wanted to check exactly what value is passed once i press the "submit" button. Thank you.

• Jaxb unmarshalls fixml object but all fields are null

  I have a small XML document in the FIXML format. I'm unmarshalling them using jaxb. The problem The process complete without errors but the objects which are created are completely null. Every field is empty. The fields which are lists (like the Qty) have the right number of object in them. But the fields of those objects are also null. Setup I've downloaded the FIXML schema from here and I've created the classes with xjc and the maven plugin. They are all in the package org.fixprotocol.fixml_5_0_sp2. In the above sample the Amt array will have five element which matches the number of amts in the file. But all the fields like ccy are null. I've put breakpoints in the classes created by xjc and none of the setters are ever called. So it appears that jaxb is unmarshalling and creating all the correct objects, but it's never calling the setters?? I'm completely stumped on this. I've seen a few posts that suggrest making sure the package.info file that was generated by xjc is in the packags and I've made sure that it's there. There are no working in the IDE about the generated code. Any help much appreciated.
