• Can't Remote Desktop to server after rebooting via Remote Desktop

  When I reboot a Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 server via a Remote Desktop connection, the server comes back up and will not accept any RDP connections: the RDP client errors out with "Connection Refused." The Terminal Services service is running on the server and restarting it has no effect. No errors are logged on the server. The only way I've found to fix this is to login at the console or via the DRAC and reboot the machine again, which is an ugly solution for obvious reasons. Has anyone run into this before?

  Hello, I want to forward a port from my remote vps to my domestic server and I am quite a newbie with iptables. The problem is that I am using a dynamic dns service to reach my home server from the internet so I don't have a fixed ip and iptables doesn't like urls. The rules I am willing to use are these: -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 -d xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx --dport 8888 -j DNAT --to myhome.tld:80 -A FORWARD -p tcp -i eth0 -d myhome.tld --dport 80 -j ACCEPT Of course I recevie a Error BAD IP ADDRESS because of myhome.tld. What can I do?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Server ping gateway responds with destination host unreachable

  I consider myself fairly avid with Ubuntu and Linux, but this one has me stumped. I built up a Xen Server using Ubuntu 12.04 as the base operating system. It has multiple domUs running on it. My home network has a statically defined network where I got all the network connectivity going peachy. The server was moved to a permanent home this morning. So, the network configuration on the main system had to change. Again, another static network, but now I can't ping the upstream gateway from the host. As the VMs use this NIC over a bridge, they too are broken. Ping responds with "destination host unreachable." I simplified the networking down to a simple static network as seen below (no bridge or anything) just to get it to work. Here's the contents of my /etc/network/interfaces file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 216.7.188.228 gateway 216.7.188.225 netmask 255.255.255.240 broadcast 216.7.188.255 network 216.7.188.0 dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 Here's the contents of route -n 0.0.0.0 216.7.188.225 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 216.7.188.224 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.240 U 0 0 0 eth0 And the results of pinging the gateway: PING 216.7.188.225 (216.7.188.225) 56(84) bytes of data. I did try using eth1 (as there are two NICS on the server (in case the MAC address got flipped on bootup). No success there. Yes, the cable is in the right port now :) Any thoughts? • There's IP but can't reach gateway

  I have just installed ubuntu 12.04 on my new laptop, and brought it back to home, but I found the wireless network does not work. Strangely, it has the correct ip, but can't connect to the gateway. ifconfig gives ip 192.168.64.36, with broadcast 192.168.79.255 and mask 255.255.240.0, this are all correct, the gateway is at 192.168.64.1 cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 192.168.64.1 nameserver 127.0.0.1 which i think it's also right. but when I ping 192.168.64.1, all packages are lost. Please help me with this, I really do not know what happened to my network settings. • Spring MVC jQuery remote validation

  Hi, I am using Spring MVC on the server side, but in one of the pages I decided to create an AJAX validation with jQuery rather than the default Spring validation. Everything works great, except when I have to do a remote validation to check if a "title" already exists. • Sending microphone input over Remote Desktop 7.0

  I am using Remote Desktop 7 (the new version that came out with Windows 7) to control a Windows XP Pro machine. I have selected "Record from this computer" in the Remote Audio settings. When I connect to the machine, go to the control panel, open the sound panel, and go to the audio tab, I find that the default sound playback device is "Microsoft RDP Audio Driver". However, there is no default sound recording device. As expected, my IP phone thinks there is no recording device. If I am sitting in front of the computer with a mic plugged in, it works just fine. Has anybody else been able to get this work appropriately? Is there anything that I have to setup on the XP machine to get this working? Thanks in advance. Edit: As John T pointed out below, you have to be connecting to a Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate machine for this to work. I've also found out that Multi-monitor support has the same requirement.

  I am writing a powershell script to set up some HyperV VM's however there is one step I am having trouble automating. How do I check the box to allow Remote desktop access from the RemoteApp settings programmatically? • Windows Server 2008 Remote Desktop printing blank pages

  I have a Windows Server 2008 (not R2) machine which has problems with redirected printing. Clients connecting via Remote Desktop have their printers redirected and appearing for them to print to, but printing from applications on the server to local printers is giving blank pages, missing pages, or pages with headers/footers but no middle section. The issues are consistant for similar prints, but sometimes other prints and/or applications will work correctly. I have installed PDFCreator locally on the server, and the same print jobs sent by the same application appear correctly in the PDFs. Printing that PDF via the redirected printer prints correctly. I have tried the following: Installing drivers. I’ve installed several drivers different drivers, for both the client and server operating system and architecture, on the client and the server. Reinstalling the printers. I’ve tried reinstalling on remote print servers, the clients, and the host server, and tried different client machines. Granting everyone full permissions on the print spool folder on the server. Editing the registry to forward non-USB ports (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302361) None of these have made any difference. The clients are using Windows 7 or Windows XP and none of them have any issues with printing locally. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Windows 7 hangs while loading desktop

  I am facing a weird problem. My computer hangs while loading the desktop, and only the background shows up; no icons or bars load. If I power the system on and off about 4-6 times, I may be able to use it normally. The desktop loads normally after rebooting or in safe mode; this only occurs when I start the system normally. I've tried several things to fix it, such as removing all start-up items, but it still doesn't solve the problem. What should I do? • Bare-metal virtualisation for the desktop

  Hi, Does anyone have any knowledge about bare-metal virtualisation products? I'm interested in building a new desktop machine for home, I've been looking at the Intel Quad Core processors and I'd like to put 8GB of RAM in there, but, it got me thinking about making the most out of the available resources. I thought if I could get a good 64bit machine, put some bare-metal virtualisation on, then have a primary system, I'd also be able to bring up some extra virtualised systems as and when I needed. I know most of the bare metal systems are designed for the server market, but, is there anything out there that works well for a desktop. What are the caveats? I presume I won't be able to make the most out of any video cards I could buy, what about just getting a decent screen resolution, will this be a problem? I run a single 24" screen. What about DVD/CD writing, is this possible? I'd like to re-rip my CD collection, I was hoping the quad 64Bit goodness would help me out with the encoding. I currently use a Mac and couldn't go back to windows so that leaves Linux, I was thinking a primary OS of ubuntu. Does this make a difference? Thanks Andrew

• Multiple Remote Desktop Connection in Windows Server 2003?

  My company is transitioning all user PC's to Windows 7 64-Bit in anticipation of the 2014 cutoff for Windows XP support. So far everything has been going great except for one specific piece of software that will not run in Windows 7. The current plan is to give everyone a cheap secondary PC to run this software but I feel that's a little much for software that's not even used all the time, although it is essential. I've suggested we install virtual machines but the company does not want to pay for the XP licences. I have access to a copy of Windows Server 2003 that is no longer being used and I was wondering if it was possible to create a remote desktop server. I know it can be done on a one-to-one basis, but this is a 15 person helpdesk. I'd like to be able to support multiple remote dekstop sessions, each with their own logins and dekstops. Is this possible? Are there any other alternatives to my issue? FYI, I've been told that XP mode is only free for consumers. There are costs when used in a corporate environment.

• Ubuntu 10.10 forgets desktop theme.

  I am running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (on a Windows 7 host). Several times now, the top-level menu bar, the task bar — and seemingly every system dialog — have forgotten the out-of-the-box "Ambiance" theme they conform to when I first installed the system. Window captions still preserve the theme, but pretty much nothing else does. I have searched high and low on Google for assistance with this problem. Everything I've found suggests either running some gconf reset or deleting .gconf* .gnome* and other similar directories. I have followed all this advice and nothing works. I still get a boring Windows-95-style gray 3D look and feel. On previous occasions, after much messing around I've given up and rebooted the VM instance, and been pleasantly suprised to see the original "Ambience" theme restored throughout the UI, but invariably it disappears again some time later, usually after a reboot, so I can never figure out what I did that broke it. Here's a sample from Ubuntu's site of what I want it to look like. And here's a screenshot of my system as it currently looks. Also note that my GNOME Terminals normally have a nice purple semi-translucent look, and as can be seen from the screenshot, they are now just a solid matt white. This last time (just this morning), trying numerous combinations all the usual tricks and rebooting several times hasn't fixed it, so here I am on SU wondering: How do I recover the out-of-the-box theme for my Gnome/Ubuntu desktop, noting that blowing away all config files — as suggested in many places online — fails to achieve this? EDIT: It might help to know that it seems to fail either after I resize the VM instance, forcing the Ubuntu desktop to resize itself, or after I play around with Compiz settings. I haven't been able to figure out which of these it is, and it could be neither. Given the amount of pain I have had to go through to get things back to normal (and given that I am at a loss as to how to do so), it has proven difficult to definitively isolate the cause.

• Developer hardware autonomy in a managed desktop environment [closed]

  I’m looking for some feedback on how developer PCs are managed within environments that have a strict managed desktop policy (normally large corporations). For example, many corporate environments control the installation of software and the deployment of patches and virus updates through a centralised channel. This usually means also dictating the OS version and architecture (32 bit versus 64 bit) which will likely also mean standardised hardware configurations. I’m particularly interested in feedback from developers who work in this sort of environment but have a high degree of autonomy over their machines. This might mean choosing your own hardware vendor, OS type and version and perhaps how the machines are built and maintained. I have several specific questions: How do you satisfy the needs of security, governance etc whilst maintaining your autonomy? For example, how do you address concerns about keeping virus definitions and OS patches up to date? Do you have a process for gaining exemption from standard desktop builds and if so, what do you need to demonstrate in order to get this? How have you justified this need to the decision makers? Essentially, what is the benefit to your role as a developer by having this degree of autonomy? Thanks very much everyone. • Synchronizing local and remote cache in distributed caching

  With a distributed cache, a subset of the cache is kept locally while the rest is held remotely. In a get operation, if the entry is not available locally, the remote cache will be used and and the entry is added to local cache. In a put operation, both the local cache and remote cache are updated. Other nodes in the cluster also need to be notified to invalidate their local cache as well. What's a simplest way to achieve this if you implemented it yourself, assuming that nodes are not aware of each other. Edit My current implementation goes like this: Each cache entry contains a time stamp. Put operation will update local cache and remote cache Get operation will try local cache then remote cache A background thread on each node will check remote cache periodically for each entry in local cache. If the timestamp on remote is newer overwrite the local. If entry is not found in remote, delete it from local.

• Linux Mint Cinamon 17 Qiana, Xfce desktop background problem [on hold]

  I've installed Xfce4 on my laptop which runs Linux Mint 17 with Cinamon default desktop. Everything works OK and I customized my lightweight Xfce, like change menu location and desktop background that it is similar to my Cinamon desktop and used it for a while. Suddenly after last restart my desktop background becomes black and there is no option for desktop background change when I right click on desktop. I should mention that xfdesktop & didn't help, which tells it's already running. Some icons like Computer, Home and Oracle VM that was already there is showing, but my Trash or other icons did not. I've tried everywhere in xfce4-settings-manager but could not get my desktop background back

  I get a warning event with ID 20499 for TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager.The error is: Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \server.domain.home for user administrator. Yet, I don't see any issues (I'm guessing because that user is on the machine local). Why am I getting this warning? I'm on Windows Server 2012 R2 connecting from a Windows 8.1.

  Hi.. when I go through the set up in xp pro sp3 to create incoming network connection i get this message, incoming conections depends on routing and remote access serice which was unable to start.. This happens on both of my machines I try it on.. Help Thanks Reed..

  Howdy, I just recently installed hyper-v server 2008 r2 on a dedicated server i have, but i'm having trouble enabling remote management. Running the HVRemote - http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote - tool seems to have yielded some positive results, and all tests on the server pass (firewall, permissions, etc), but client-side things are not working. I'm stuck at this step : 5: - Simple query to root\cimv2 WMI namespace FAIL - Simple query failed Cannot perform simple query against root\cimv2 Anyone could help me figure this out? I'm almost giving up and installing XenServer... Thanks

• Unable to establish remote access to workplace pc windows 7

  I am successfully connected to my workplace via vpn. But when I try to connect to my pc via remote desktop it keep asking for credentials even I am providing the right one. This works fine in windows xp but unable to connect using win 7. Also after establishing a vpn I lost my internet access. Any idea.
