  • Uploading many large files to a remote server

    - by TiernanO
I am in the process of creating an offsite backup, and need to do a initial load of data. Currently, that's about 400Gb, give or take 10Gb or so... The backup system is producing files which are about 4Gb each, and has some other, smaller related files also. So, i need to transfer all 400ish gigs to a remote server, but how? What is the best method? I have full remote access to the server, so i can install anything i need to install. There are Windows, Linux and a Solaris VM running on the box itself, so any of those can be used there, and i have Windows and Linux at home. I have 2 internet connections in house, 10Mb/s uploading on each, so something that could potentially split the number of connections would be handy (kind of like GetRight, but in reverse... PutRight?).

  • Remote Desktop Solution without VPN, with locked PC

    - by ujjain
Sometimes I work from home and I use either of these 2 methods: Teamviewer VPN + Remote desktop When I connect with VPN I am however unable to browse any websites on my own computer, which can be very inconvenient when I am basically waiting an hour for somebody else to finish his job to do a 5 minute job. It would be nice if I could still continue browsing. A solution for this is Teamviewer. With Teamviewer I can manage the other computer, without suffering the restrictions of using the VPN. Everybody in the working area however, can see me using my computer remotely and this is not a good situation either, especially during work hours. I would like a solution that allows me to continue browsing normally and still control my remote workstation, without other people seeing every move I make on the workstation.

So the question is how to connect to computer without port forwarding, I know that is out there some programs like teamviewer, or some else that solve that task, but what I looking for is the some free site that can make "bridge" between are two computer, or is it possible to install on computer some program that simulate virtual router or something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIof7kFTgJE .... I need this cause I have my own simple remote desktop connection program, but I can't connect to other computer outside network cause don't have premission to configure router :( any comment, link, advice, or tutorials will be very helpful :)

  • Bad password when logging in via Remote Desktop

    - by Shiraz Bhaiji
I have just setup a windows 2003 server running in hyper-V. When I log in via Hyper-V it works fine. When I try to login via remote desktop I get a bad user name or password error. I have: Disabled the firewall Enabled remote connections Before I did the above I did not get to the login screen. I can ping the ip address of the image. I am trying to login as Administrator. Anyone have an idea about how to fix this? Edit I have now managed to fix this by changing the password to something without special characters. Strange thing is the I could not see any problems with the passord, had tried typing it into the user name field to check it.

  • Remote desktop on Mac

    - by Crystal
I just started a job using a Mac. I also have a Mac at home. The IT dpt here does not know how to remote login to my desktop from home. They installed the Cisco VPN client and game an account for that. I think at this point I need some remote desktop software to login to my work Machine. I looked online and downloaded the free version of TeamViewer. I didn't really understand how to use it. I have my work computer's name, and was hoping that would be enough to login, but I think I am mising a piece of the puzzle. Any thoughts on how to login to my work computer? Thanks.

  • changing desktop background picture from stretch on Windows 7

    - by nird
I have a brand new Windows 7 laptop, I've changed the desktop background picture using the "personalization" item of the desktop right click menu. Below the list that of images to choose there's a drop down with options "stretch", "fit", "tile", etc. When I change that from stretch to anything else nothing happens, and when I return to that dialog the drop down is still on "stretch". Anyone knows what's going on? Thanks. EDIT: apparently this is a know problem with HP/Compaq laptops.

  • Remote sessions limited to two of many monitors?

    - by Xaephen
I have 3 monitors attached to my local PC arranged in a triangle. My goal is to have the top monitor display local content, while displaying a remote session across the bottom two. I have gotten this to work with span and RDP, but I am looking for a software that would allow the remote sessions to be restricted to a number of monitors of my choosing, rather than spanning. Does this software exist? I've looked extensively. If there is a hack or something that might do it, I'm totally down for getting my hands dirty.

  • Windows Remote Desktop with multiple monitors

    - by BDW
I'm looking for a remote desktop product that will allow me to switch on the fly between how many monitors the desktop is using. This would be going from one Windows 7 machine to another, one is running Ultimate, the other Enterprise. I know I can use Windows RDP with multi-monitor support, but it seems that only allows me to use ALL monitors, and if I switch to a windowed view, I get huge scrollbars because I'm going from 3 monitors to 1 window. What I'm looking for is something that will allow me to switch from 1, 2, or 3 monitor displays without restarting the RDP and would end up with a true 1/2/3 display - ie, if I go from 3 monitors to 1, or a window, I don't get scrollbars. Is there any such product?

  • How to secure a VM while allowing customer RDS (or equivalent) access to its desktop

    - by ChrisA
We have a Windows Client/(SQL-)Server application which is normally installed at the customer's premises. We now need to provide a hosted solution, and browser-based isn't feasible in the short term. We're considering hosting the database ourselves, and also hosting the client in a VM. We can set all this up easily enough, so we need to: ensure that the customer can connect easily, and also ensure that we suitably restrict access to the VM (and its host, of course) We already access the host and guest machines across the internet via RDS, but we restrict access to it to only our own internal, very small, set of static IPs, and of course theres the 2 (or 3?)-user limit on RDS connections to a remote server. So I'd greatly appreciate ideas on how to manage: the security the multi-user aspect. We're hoping to be able to do this initially without a large investment in virtualisation infrastructure - it would be one customer only to start with, with perhaps two remote users. Thanks!

  • Remote desktop connection dos not respond anymore (no more task bar)

    - by Bronzato
I have a remote desktop connection (from my home) to the company's server. On this I opened a Remote Desktop Connection Manager and inside this connect to a specific server. I was busy copying a file but this task never ends. So I kill the process and now I have a blue screen and no more taskbar. Very frustrating. When I try CTRL+ALT+END (=CTRL+ALT+DEL) this is executed on the main server and not the server which gives me the blue screen. I don't know if I'm clear. I know I should have keep Task Manager open and type Run... explorer.exe but I closed it. Any help is really appreciated!

  • Remote Desktop from Mac to Windows (Microphone, Sounds must work)

    - by WebDevGuy
I have a laptop that is running Windows 7. I want to remotely connect to it using my 27" iMac. I was using an app called "Jump Desktop" and I really like it. The only problem is that I cannot use Skype, GoToMeeting, etc... because the microphone doesn't work remotely. Any recommendations on other apps that support remote mic/sound? In other works I want to use solely my iMac, remote into my Windows 7 laptop, use skype, etc.... on the laptop. Thanks

  • Windows X86 and ARM Compatible Remote Desktop

    - by John
I'm looking for super-easy to use X86/ARM compatible remote desktop software. I need to do remote work with a client and because they know absolutely nothing they walked out of Best Buy with an ARM laptop that can't run jack. It must be freeware. It must be compatible with both x86/win7 and ARM/fail8 versions of Windows. It must be able to have something the first time it comes up that the user can tell me and I know how to connect to their computer (simple like Ammyy Admin). She is running some kind of Windows RT ARM laptop. I am running an x86 Windows 7 desktop.

  • Windows 7 Desktop slideshow

    - by blackmastiff
I have my windows 7 (Home Professional if it matters) set to automatically change the background every 20 minutes with the source of the slideshow as a folder in the Pictures library. Recently, the slideshow has not been functioning. The pictures do not change while the computer is on; they only seem to change when it is shut down (i.e. there is a different desktop on each boot), or about 50% of the time when waking the computer from hibernation. I've changed the time settings, the folder location on the drive, and made sure to disable all programs that tweak the desktop with no luck. Any thoughts?

  • Sync laptop and desktop solution/ideas?

    - by user1078719
I have a laptop and a desktop I want to keep files up-to-date on both of them. I was thinking of creating a hard drive on 'server' and then changing "my documents" to that server path. It should work all right when there are two computers but what if a laptop uses wireless access at my house and more importantly, when it's connected wirelessly on a different IP range when I'm at college? For the second case, I guess, creating a VPN/remote server connection to the desktop will work, but if I want to make it automatic (my documents mapping), is there way to do that?

  • Add the Vista Style Sidebar Back to Windows 7

    - by Mysticgeek
If you are moving from Vista to Windows 7, you might miss the Sidebar which was introduced in Vista. Today we take a look at a couple options for getting a Sidebar back in Windows 7. Copy Files from Vista Note: In this example we are using 32-bit versions of Vista and Windows 7. Make sure you are logged in with Administrator credentials. If you have a Vista machine running, we can copy the Windows Sidebar files over to the Windows 7 machine. On the Vista machine navigate to C:\Program Files and copy the Windows Sidebar folder and all of its contents over to a flash drive or network location. On the Windows 7 machine go to C:\Program Files and rename the Windows Sidebar folder to something like Windows Sidebar_old. Now copy the Vista Windows Sidebar folder into C:\Program Files… Now you will have both folders…Windows Sidebar and Windows Sidebar_old in your C:\Program Files folder. Right-click on the desktop and select Gadgets. There you are…the Original Vista Sidebar is back and will act as it did in Vista. Move Sidebar Gadgets Another work around if you don’t have a copy of Vista, you can simply move the Desktop Gadgets you want over to the right side of the screen and they will stay there…no dock needed. Type gadgets into the Search box in the Windows Start Menu and click on Desktop Gadgets. Then drag the included Gadgets you want over to the right side of the screen. Or click on the link to Get more gadgets online to find more. Once you have them where you want, each time you reboot they will still be in the same location. This holds true no matter where you place them on your desktop as well. Install Desktop Sidebar If you want an enhanced sidebar that includes a lot of different features, and don’t have a copy of Vista, you might want to check out Desktop Sidebar Beta (link below). This is a freeware application that works with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. After installation you can access it from the Start Menu… Here is how it will look after you launch it… It includes several pre-installed panels including a clock, Media Player, Search Bar, Slideshow, Messenger, Outlook inbox, Tasks, Quick Launch, Performance…and a lot more. It is highly customizable and allows you to change skins, add various levels of transparency, and a lot more. One caveat with going with Desktop Sidebar is we didn’t find a way to add Windows Gadgets to it (though there might be a plugin for it that we’re not aware of). But there are so many options, you may not mind. However, you can still use the desktop gadgets as you normally would in Windows 7. Believe it or not, some people actually prefer the Vista style Sidebar and would like it back in Windows 7. With these options you can get the Vista Sidebar back if you have a copy of Vista, place the Gadgets on the desktop, or go the freeware route. • How to add a "Show desktop" icon to the launcher?

    - by Aleksandar Maricak
I recently upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04, and there is no show desktop in the launcher. I know I can use Ctrl+Super+D, but is there a way to get it in the launcher? Edit: I just installed the "show desktop" icon on the launcher with MyUnity (see below) and it worked fine. It did not install the icon above Dash launcher, but well below it. That bug has apparently been fixed. This is as of 2012.9.30.

  • web vs desktop? (php vs c++?)

    - by Dhaivat Pandya
I need to write a simple file transfer mechanism (that isn't ftp). Firstly, it must have a GUI. Secondly, it must not be dropbox. Third, it may not use any paid libraries, and hopefully, it uses open source components. The question that came to my mind is, where is everyone moving, from desktop to web, or from web to desktop? Would it be more useful to be experienced in say, C++ than in PHP (or vice versa)?

  • Desktop installation fails on Dell Precision T1600 with Nvidia Quadro card?

    - by Masao
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on a Dell Precision T1600, however, I get a blank screen with only a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner (this is after the grey screen with the small Ubuntu logo at the bottom). If I remove the Nvidia Quadro 2000 card and plug a monitor into the built-in VGA port, then the installation works fine. Also, I've tried an Nvidia Quadro 2000D by PNY, but I get the same problem. Has anyone installed Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on a Dell Precision workstation?

  • Exchange 2003 - how to route ALL mail (including internal) via an external SMTP gateway? (Or, domain

    - by Scandalon
Short version: Is there a way to have Exchange route all email, including internal AD users that would normally be routed directly, through an external gateway? (SMTP, probably a "Smart Host" in exchange nomenclature.) Longer version: I'm not an email expert/admin/orevencompetent. Inherited an exchange 2003 server, migrating to web-based SaaS provider. To add to the fun, we're also (forced by deadlines) transitioning domains. What we (my boss) wants is any email sent to the new domain to have a copy sent to both domains. Getting mail sent to the new domain/provider to then be copied/forwarded to our old domain/exchange is easy. But we want mail sent from the old domain to the old domain to get sent to the new domain as well. However: If we route all outgoing exchange mail through the new provider gateway, w/ the new domain forwarding to the old, we'd get an email loop. The "solution" desired is for an exchange user that sends to another exchange user to still be sent via the external gateway, which would in turn be sent to the new domain, and copied/forwarded back to the old domain. Is it possible? A bit of a strange request I'm sure. And I expect that what we're attempting to do is DoingItWrong(tm). Any better ideas?

  • Is there any way to adjust the width of taskbar items on Gnome desktop?

    - by David Thomas
Is there any way in which the width of items on the taskbar (or, rather, the lower panel) of the Gnome (2.32.0) desktop (Ubuntu 10.10) can be adjusted to take a more sensible width? While I can see the icons of the applications they represent, they seem a little over-compressed, given the width of the desktop/monitor resolution (1900 x 1080): Click the image, or this link, for a full-sized (1920x169, 169.7KB) graphic.

  • Is it possible to use multiple desktop environments on same system?

    - by Kshitiz Sharma
I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I want to try out KDE and other desktop environments. But I'm not sure if I'll like them enough to switch permanently. I want to be safe and make a transition in a piecemeal fashion. Is it possible to install KDE on Ubuntu and yet not do away with the default Unity shell? Could I install multiple desktop environments and switch between them by tweaking some startup configuration and then rebooting?

  • Gnome Desktop Icons Alignment

    - by Gabriel L. Oliveira
Hi all. It has been a long time since I started to compare the gnome desktop to the windows desktop. But since I began to use linux, I realized that the "gnome way" to align the icons on Desktop is not that nice for me. And comparing to Windows's way, windows is better for me. (remember, for me). I'd like to know if anyone has some tip to make "gnome desktop icon alignment" more like windows do. I tried to reduce the icon's size, did something, but was not that all. So, could anyone tell another tip? I like when I put something on windows desktop, and wherever I put the file, Windows organize the file and put the icon right after the last icon (in a cascade style) (and automatically). Any tips?

  • detect if extended desktop is to the left or to the right

    - by bobobobo
So, I have a screen capture utility (it takes full screen shots and saves it to png files) I've written, and it uses SM_CXVIRTUALSCREEN and SM_CYVIRTUALSCREEN to determine the width and height of the desktop. I then get the desktop DC and copy out the bits and save them as png. BitBlt( backDC, 0, 0, backBufferCX, backBufferCX, desktopDC, X_SRC, 0, SRCCOPY ); Here X_SRC is usually 0, UNLESS THE DESKTOP HAS BEEN EXTENDED "TO THE LEFT". In that case it needs to be -1280px, for example, if the left monitor measures 1280px. How can I determine if the desktop's starting point is negative (if the user has extended his desktop to the left?)
