  • What are all the disadvantages of using files as a means of communicating between two processes?

    I have legacy code which I need to improve for performance reasons. My application comprises of two executables that need to exchange certain information. In the legacy code, one exe writes to a file ( the file name is passed as an argument to exe) and the second executable first checks if such a file exists; if does not exist checks again and when it finds it, then goes on to read the contents of the file. This way information in transferred between the two executables. The way the code is structured, the second executable is successful on the first try itself. Now I have to clean this code up and was wondering what are the disadvantages of using files as a means of communication rather than some inter-process communication like pipes.Is opening and reading a file more expensive than pipes? Are there any other disadvantages? And how significant do you think would be the performance degradation. The legacy code is run on both windows and linux.

    This seems like a pretty straightforward thing to do, but I can't find anything off the open-source shelf. Is there a solution already out there that does the following: can be configured with an arbitrary XSL stylesheet generates a web form based on an arbitrary XML document and the XSL creates edit functionality in appropriate places in the rendered form updates the local representation of the XML document provides capabilities to view, save the new XML document Ideally, one that plugs into a Java web application. Even better if it can generate the XSL based on schema documents - but that might not be feasible, not really thought it through. For context, I'm thinking things like pleasant-for-humans editing of Maven POMs, ANT build.xml, etc. Cheers,

  • install grub on pendrive containing linux installation, making it system independent

    i have a win7 system and i want to install debian 6 on usb flash drive. the problem is grub loader. i want to install the grub loader on usb itself, so i can just plug in the pendrive in any computer and boot to deb6. so in effect making the flash drive an independent system. i tried it earlier, but ended up with grub loader needing me to insert the pendrive every time to give me boot options to even boot the win7 system, even though it was on primary hdd. so is there a way to turn the pendrive into full linux system with own boot loader, which can automatically detect os in the system i plug it in and be able to boot any of them. totally, self sufficient and system independent; making the pen drive so that it only needs a host system to run the os it carries. thank you, waiting for replies.

  • Is it safe to run an operating system from an USB flash drive?

    I've got a laptop that has a broken harddisk controller. Replacing the motherboard is quite expensive. I thought about buying a flash drive and installing & running the system from it. However, I'm concerned about some things. Speed: Are they fast enough for swap memory (I've got only 1GB RAM installed.) I'm considering buying 2 or 3 of them and making them into a RAID. What about limited write cycles? How long will it last for a system that has a filesystem with journaling enabled? I'd hate to abandon it. Are there significant differences between internal SSD which are used in modern laptops like MacBooks and USB flash drives? What should I expect in 10 years when the memory wear starts kicking in?

    Hi, Current ZMI management "Pack database" functionality is little rough. 1) Could it be possible to have some kind of progress indicator for web UI? E.g. one telling how many minutes/hours are left giving at least some kind of estimate 2) How does ZODB packing affect the responsivity of the site? Are all transactions blocked? 3) Any command line scripts with progress indicator available so you could do this from a ZEO command line client? 4) At least some kind of log markers to logout output...   • python interactive web data/forms/interface communicating with remote server

    What's an efficient method (preferably simple as well) for communicating with a remote server and allowing the user to 'interact' with it (IE submit commands, user interface) via the web browser (IE a text box to input commands, and an text area for output, or various command-less abstracted interfaces)? I have the 'standalone' python code finished for communicating and working(terminal/console based right now). My primary concern is with re-factoring the code to suite the web, which involves establishing a connection (python sockets), and maintaining the connection while the user is logged on. some further details: currently using django framework for the basic back end/templates.

    I discovered this when I tried to use EasyBCD to well, edit by bcd, but it said "The current file is in use and cannot be opened by EasyBCD..."     In a CD collection program, I have each artist's country of origin stored in the main database and want to display a map of the world which: Colour-codes each country depending on the number of CDs by artists in that country Allows clicking on each country to filter a list of CDs to only ones by artists in that country This is a heavily simplified version of what I'm trying to do, but if I can at least get this far the rest should be easy enough to figure out. So far the closest thing I've found to what I'm trying to do is here: http://www.synergetechsolutions.com/blog/analytics-world-map-control Ideally I don't want to be embedding Flash in my program though, and the only other solutions I've found all involve SVG which I haven't managed to get working in practice outside of a web browser control (and I DEFINITELY don't want to be embedding a browser in the forms). Something in pure managed code and either GDI+ or WPF would be preferable. Are there any existing components that would get me started, or can anyone suggest how to approach it from scratch?

  • Ant database rebuild script, avoiding interactive prompting

    Hi Guys. I'm writing an ant script to rebuild our database i.e. dropping everything and rebuilding from scratch. The problem our DBA adds a Y/N prompt before executing the rest of the script, and therefore we can't call this from an automated build process. Does anyone have any suggestions to circumvent the Y/N prompt? Obviously we could create seperate scripts, one for the DBA's and one for the automated build - but this requires maintaning both. We're running on Windows so it's not as easy as using sed to strip out the prompt...but i'm thinking something along those lines. Not sure if that's clear enough but hope you can help. Cheers.

I am interested in monitoring some server specific data like CPU/memory usage, disk/filesystem usage, network traffic, system load etc. and some other my process specific data. What are available open source that can serve my purpose? If it provides to customize the parameter to be monitored and monitor your own data by creating plugin / agent. Any suggestions? I heard of Nagios, Zabbix and Pandora but not sure if they provide such interface.

  • interactive (adding listeners to) DAE model in flex + papervision

    I have a DAE model that is parsed into several parts. I am able to deal with them separately, such as changing their material or colour but I am having problems adding click or hover listeners over the children. For example, lets say I have a model of a kitty where each facial feature is a child. I want to be able to hover or click the features and have a window pop up explaining the feature. I've tried parsing the model and adding listeners but it doesn't seem to work. Thanks in advance! L

My GUI application can provide functions like: get_input_from_screen(); and write_this_crap_out_to_screen(); and more functions I can write as necessary I also know how to embed a lua interpreter in my C++ code (short tutorial on the web) What I don't know .. is how to connect the input/output of a lua interpreter with my GUI stuff.   • Python Interactive Interpreter always returns "Invalid syntax" on Windows

    I've encountered an extremely confusing problem. Whatever I type into the Python interpreter returns "Invalid Syntax". See examples below. I've tried fooling around with the code page of the prompt I run the interpreter from, but it doesn't seem to help at all. Furthermore, I haven't been able to find this particular, weird bug elsewhere online. Any assistance anyone could provide would be lovely. I've already tried reinstalling Python, but I didn't have any luck - the problem is also there in both 3.13 and 2.7. Running: Python version 3.1.3, Windows XP SP3.     I am trying to retrieve the AST from scala souce file. I have simplified the code (only relevant code) to following. trait GetAST { val settings = new Settings val global = new Global(settings, new ConsoleReporter(settings)) def getSt = "hello" //global.typedTree(src, true) } object Tre extends GetAST { def main(args:Array[String]) { println(getSt.getClass) println("exiting program") } } The above code compiles fine and runs fine. But the problem is the program does not exit. The prompt is not displayed after printing "exiting program". I have to use ^c to exit. Any idea what the problem might be

  • Where to place interactive objects in JavaScript?

    I'm creating a web based application (i.e. JavaScript with jQuery and lots of SVG) where the user interacts with "objects" on the screen (think of DIVs that can be draged around, resized and connected by arraows - like a vector drawing programm or a graphical programming language). As each "object" contains individual information but is allways belonging to a "class" of elements it's obvious that this application should be programmed by using an OOP approach. But where do I store the "objects" best? Should I create a global structure ("registry") with all (JS native) objects and tell them "draw yourself on the DOM"? Or should I avoid such a structure and think of the (relevant) DOM nodes as my objects and attach the relevant data as .data() to them? The first approach is very MVC - but I guess the attachment of all the event handlers will be non trivial. The second approach will handle the events in a trivial way and it doesn't create a duplicate structure, but I guess the usual OO stuff (like methods) will be more complex. What do you recomend? I think the answer will be JavaScript and SVG specific as "usual" programming languages don't have such a highly organized output "canvas".
