• Broke Ubuntu 12.04 either with Screencloud or Ubuntu Tweak

  Earlier today I installed the Screen Shot app "Screencloud" and after the installation Firefox was having problems. I didn't think much about it, just closed Firefox, then proceeded to change the toolbar opacity on Ubuntu Tweak. After restarting my system, hoping it would fix Firefox (because, you know, restarting fixes everything ;) ) I am able to go to the Log In Screen, type in my password, but then I get 3 errors regarding the Screencloud Ubuntu One, Imgur, and Dropbox plugins. After clicking the "Okay" on all three errors, all I see is my wallpaper. I am not able to access the terminal VIA CtrlAltT, but I am able to log out VIA CtrlAltDelete. I have tried all desktop environments I have installed (that, except for Unity 2D, has to do with Cairo Dock.) I hope I have provided enough information. If you need more, please ask. Please help! I would like to not have to re-install Ubuntu. Other info: OS: Ubuntu 12.04 I also have a Ubuntu 12.10 Live USB, but Ubuntu 12.10 hasn't run very well on any of my computers.

• Dell xps 15z fan issue in ubuntu 12.04

  I just updated to ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell laptop xps 15z. The trouble is that I hear a slight ticking sound every 3rd second, probably from a fan. This is a new issue in this ubuntu version. I use the recommended boot options for grub, i.e. acpi_backlight=vendor, but I do not use any acpi=off or acpi=noirq. Is there a way to fix this issue from ubuntu, by maybe controlling the fans somehow? EDIT: Notice, the sound goes away as the fan speeds up, (when doing calculations or such), so it is really a fan issue. EDIT2: I have located the issue: If I use conky 1.9, together with the command execpi for a python application, then the sound appears, and the noise syncs with the update interval for conky (NOT for the update interval for execpi!). The noise seems to be proportional to the complexity of the drawing that is needed. This is very strange, as this issue was not in the prev. version of conky I used. The solution was to increase the update interval for conky from 0.5 to 3, i.e. update every 3rd second instead of twice a second.

• Laptop not syncing with Ubuntu One

  I have a desktop running Maverick, and a laptop running Lucid. Both are supposed to be linked to my Ubuntu One account. The desktop syncs fine, but when I started the laptop for the first time in a couple of months, it wouldn't sync any more. The Ubuntu One Preferences window either reports "Synchronisation complete" even though no recent files have been downloaded nor have any test files created in the relevant synced folder been uploaded, or it says "Synchronisation in progress", which does not appear to be happening as it stays like this for ages and the lights on my router suggest no traffic is going through. Have repeatedly tried disconnecting and reconnecting, and removing the device from the account then reattaching it, all to no avail.

• Ubuntu One not syncing fully

  I have uploaded several folders of data to Ubuntu One from my desktop computer, over the last few weeks, and I can see that all the contents are there when I look at my account on the web. When I look at my laptop (connected to the same account), one of the first folders I uploaded hasn't downloaded completely. New folders added from either device seem to sync correctly, but this one older folder remains almost empty, even though the control panel says file syncing is up-to-date. I have plenty of space available. Stopping and restarting the sync daemon and rebooting the laptop are both ineffective. What can I do to make this folder sync fully? I don't want to risk losing the data (which now exists only in Ubuntu One), and I don't have a lot of broadband data to play with. I've seen several bugs relating to this sort of issue but they're all quite old and apparently fixed, while this is happening on new 13.04 installations on both desktop and laptop.

• How to enable user sharing per instructions in .xsession-errors log

  I have this entry in .xsession-errors log "Nautilus-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing." This is in relation to my applets having to be reloaded after every boot. Just wondering how I would enable user sharing, and how it affects my applets ??

• Ubuntu 12.04 terminal only after nvidia driver upgrade

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 (after getting tired of Windows). Installation went fine. I had one problem when I got in suspend mode and then resumed my screen was scrambled. After some googling founds some tips to upgrade my nvidia drivers. I did this, and rebooted but only a terminal windows appears now instead of a graphical desktop. Tried to fix it by several reboots, and removing xorg.conf, but still no luck. Any advice how to fix it and get my desktop back ?

• How to synchronize a whole Ubuntu?

  I think that the time is ripe to have my whole Ubuntu synchronized just as my Dropbox folder is. Given that we are always talking about files and directories, what's the difference between my Documents folder and my /usr system directory? Almost none, except for their location. In fact, I think that there is just one big issue that prevents people to have their beloved installations mirrored wherever they go: symlinks. Dropbox, Google Drive, Ubuntu One, Sugarsync, Skydrive, none of these services support symlinking. This means that if I push a symlink in one of the synced folders, locally the symlink is kept as is, but remotely (in the cloud or on the other synced machines) the symlink is resolved to the actual file that was originally pointed to. This completely disrupts Linux installations, thus these services can't be used for this purpose. So the question is. Does anybody knows a way to achieve this? A whole Ubuntu, always synchronized with a remote running copy, but still locally stored on both disks? My best guess is that I could use NFS. But the main difference between Dropbox and NFS is that NFS is a remote filesystem that always forces to remotely access the files, while Dropbox pushes modifcations to local filesystems (and thus would perform better). I've also heard about NFS caching. Does anybody knows if this solution could approximate Dropbox in this sense? P.s. I know that /boot, /dev, /proc, /run, /tmp and device-specific mountpoints in /mnt and /media will have to be left out the sync mechanism. What I'm interested in is the principle. Can this be done with reasonable performance, having reasonable resources (e.g. ~ 1Mbps upload bandwidth and a public IP address)?

• I install Ubuntu 13.10 and reboot and im on KDE desktop?

  Hi I'm Jacob and I have no idea what's going on. I installed Ubuntu 13.10 today and was playing around with it for a while and dl'd a bunch of apps from software center and stuff. Eventually I installed steam and (finally) got it working. I downloaded TF2 and had some weird issue where the screen got so distorted to the point I could not play. So I dl'd a driver for my graphics card from the additional drivers app (or whatever it's called) and when it was done I restarted my computer (because it said to.) When the PC booted up it loaded the KDE desktop and I have no idea why. I had unity before I rebooted. Ubuntu 13.10 is the only OS installed on my PC, and I still have all the apps that I downloaded, but I kinda like unity (I started using Ubuntu after they switched to unity) and want it back. • Change "Show Desktop" to "Minimize All"

  I'd like to use Alt-Tab a lot when I'm programming under Windows. It's the quickest method to switch between windows. However, there's one annoying thing about this, and that is when I switch over to "Desktop" using Alt-Tab, Windows uses the "Show Desktop" command instead of minimizing all Windows. I personally hate Show Desktop, since it creates a separate window on top of all the other windows which captures a live display of desktop, and this causes all the widgets I have on the desktop to be hidden under this live window, and I LOVE my widgets. An ideal behavior for when I switch tabs to Desktop using Alt-Tab would be the "Minimize All" behavior, which simply minimizes all windows, leaving me with my actual desktop, which sits behind everything. In order to achieve this, I have to move my fingers across the keyboard, and press Win+M. This decreases my efficiency by .5 seconds, which is a LOT of time. How can I tell windows to use "Minimize All" rather than "Show Desktop" when I use my good ol' Alt-Tab functionality to switch over to desktop and save .5 seconds in time?

If you are tired of looking at the default wallpaper, then join us today as we look at changing it with Oceanis Change Background Windows 7. Special Notes This information is quoted directly from the website and needs to be kept in mind when using Oceanis Change Background Windows 7: If the Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program no longer works properly after installing some Windows Updates, then uninstall and reinstall the Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program to have it run properly again. If you ever do an in-place upgrade to another higher level edition of Windows 7 in the future, then be sure to uninstall this Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program first to avoid incompatibility issues with it in the new edition of Windows 7. It was designed to only work in Windows 7 Starter edition. Before There it is…the default wallpaper everyone with the Starter Edition gets stuck with. There was only one quirk that we encountered while using the Slideshow Setting. On occasion if we minimized a non-maximized window there would be a leftover partial image in place of the window. Our suggestion? Go with one wallpaper at a time and the settings shown below. These are the settings that we had terrific luck with…Only one picture selected, Picture Position = Stretch, & Change Picture Every = Every Day. Using these settings, the Starter Edition acted just like any of the other editions with regard to wallpaper management. • Customize the Default Screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista

  Windows 7 and Vista include a nice set of backgrounds, but unfortunately most of them aren’t configurable by default.  Thanks to a free app and some registry changes, however, you can make the default screensavers uniquely yours! Customize the default screensavers If you’ve ever pressed the Customize button on most of the default screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista, you were probably greeted with this message: A little digging in the registry shows that this isn’t fully correct.  The default screensavers in Vista and 7 do have options you can set, but they’re not obvious.  With the help of an app or some registry tips, you can easily customize the screensavers to be uniquely yours.  Here’s how you can do it with an app or in the registry. Customize Windows Screensavers with System Screensavers Tweaker Download the System Screensavers Tweaker (link below), and unzip the folder.  Run nt6srccfg.exe in the folder to tweak your screensavers.  This application lets you tweak the screensavers’ registry settings graphically, and it works great in all editions of Windows Vista and 7, including x64 versions. Change any of the settings you want in the screensaver tweaker, and click Apply. To preview the changes to your screensaver, open the Screen Saver settings window as normal by right-clicking on the desktop, and selecting Personalize. Click on the Screensaver button on the bottom right. Now, select your modified screensaver, and click Preview to see your changes. You can change a wide variety of settings for the Bubbles, Ribbons, and Mystify screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista, as well as the Aurora screensaver in Windows Vista.  The tweaks to the Bubbles screensaver are especially nice.  Here’s how the Bubbles look without transparency. And, by tweaking a little more, you get a screensaver that looks more like a screen full of marbles. Ribbons and Mystify each have less settings, but still can produce some unique effects.   How’s that for a brilliant screensaver? And, if you want to return your screensavers to their default settings, simply run the System Screensavers Tweaker and select Reset to defaults on any screensaver you wish to reset. Customize Windows Screensavers in the Registry If you prefer to roll up your sleeves and tweak Windows under-the-hood, then here’s how you can customize the screensavers yourself in the Registry.  Type regedit into the search box in the Start menu, browse to the key for each screensaver, and add or modify the DWORD values listed for that screensaver using the Decimal base. Please Note: Tweaking the Registry can be difficult, so if you’re unsure, just use the tweaking application above. Also, you’ll probably want to create a System Restore Point.   Bubbles To edit the Bubbles screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Bubbles Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: MaterialGlass – enter 0 for solid or 1 for transparent bubbles Radius – enter a number between 1090000000 and 1130000000; the larger the number, the larger the bubbles’ radius ShowBubbles – enter 0 to show a black background or 1 to show the current desktop behind the bubbles ShowShadows – enter 0 for no shadow or 1 for shadows behind the bubbles SphereDensity – enter a number from 1000000000 to 2100000000; the higher the number, the more bubbles on the screen. TurbulenceNumOctaves – enter a number from 1 to 255; the higher the number, the faster the bubble colors will change. Ribbons To edit the Ribbons screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Ribbons Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Blur – enter 0 to prevent ribbons from fading, or 1 to have them fade away after a few moments. Numribbons – enter a number from 1 to 100; the higher the number, the more ribbons on the screen. RibbonWidth – enter a number from 1000000000 to 1080000000; the higher the number, the thicker the ribbons. Mystify To edit the Mystify screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Mystify Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Blur – enter 0 to prevent lines from fading, or 1 to have them fade away after a few moments. LineWidth – enter a number from 1000000000 to 1080000000; the higher the number, the wider the lines. NumLines – enter a number from 1 to 100; the higher the value, the more lines on the screen. Aurora – Windows Vista only To edit the Aurora screensaver in Windows Vista, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Aurora Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Amplitude – enter a value from 500000000 to 2000000000; the higher the value, the slower the motion. Brightness – enter a value from 1000000000 to 1050000000; the higher the value, the brighter the affect. NumLayers – enter a value from 1 to 15; the higher the value, the more aurora layers displayed. Speed – enter a value from 1000000000 to 2100000000; the higher the value, the faster the cycling. Conclusion Although the default screensavers are nice, they can be boring after awhile with their default settings.  But with these tweaks, you can create a variety of vibrant screensavers that should keep your desktop fresh and interesting. • Is Ubuntu Touch a separate distribution or the same one?

  I would like to install the latest Ubuntu Touch on a 2013 Nexus 7 tablet. Which version should I be looking for: the regular Ubuntu (for ARM platform) or a separate Ubuntu Touch? I understand that after Ubuntu Touch is in frantic development, but I would like to be able to keep track which one is which. I can see the following images: Ubuntu 14.09 RTM, daily-preinstalled Ubuntu Touch 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Daily Build Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Daily Build, but only i386 and amd64; no ARM. Does it mean that ARM variant has moved to one of the first two links?

• Why does Ubuntu 10.10 show blank screen during startup?

  When I try to login to Ubuntu 10.10 I get a flickering screen for a second showing - Ubuntu 10.10 ............. and then I get a blank purple coloured screen[Ubuntu's theme colour] which doesn't progress any further Can anybody suggest a remedy to this problem? From whatever questions I searched in various Ubuntu Forums it seems like this problem is likely caused by a missing NVIDIA Display Driver[which is being used in my Sony Vaio Laptop] update in Ubuntu releases If that's the case then how can I update my NVIDIA Display Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 without being able to log into the Ubuntu 10.10?

• Fedora to Fedora remote desktop does not work (connection closed error, even after setting everything up)

  I'm trying to use remote desktop on my laptop (running Fedora) to my desktop (also running Fedora) on the same local network. I configured Remote Desktop on my desktop via System - Preferences - Remote Desktop, verified that the port is open by nmap, and attempted to connect from my laptop via vinagre (also tried appending :5900 for the port, and using the ip address). In all cases, the connection fails with a popup that says "Connection closed\n Connection to host was closed." EDIT: I am able to use vinagre from the desktop to remote desktop into itself, just not from one machine to the other. I tried vncviewer and a similar problem occurs (unable connect to socket: No route to host (113))

• Ubuntu web server cluster checks Ubuntu repository for script updates with cron

  I have a cluster of Ubuntu 12.04 web servers running a lamp stack. All of these servers are connected to a Load Balancer on Amazon Web Services. What I want to be able to do is have a dedicated Ubuntu server that I can update the PHP files on and have the other web servers check with cron to get the updates files from the repository. They don't have to use cron but that was the only thing I could think of, unless there was a way to have the updated repository tell them that it has updated files. And then how to transfer those files. Also if there is a ways for a server to check for updated files when it boots because I am going to be using auto scaling on AWS so when there is an increase in the load and another server gets created I need it to download the updated files from the repository when launched. Not sure how to transfer files from server to server.

  I have and asus r500v with 750 gb gpt system uefi motherboard core i7 3610qm, nvidia geforce gt, with ubuntu and w7 dual boot, I had problems installing ubuntu because of the grub but I fix it with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/807801, but I still have the problem of "warning: the partition is misaligned by 3072 bytes. this may result iin very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested" in every linux partitioin I made and my 750 gb is not being used at the maximun capacity it only uses 698 gb. I want to make partitions so that the warning doesnt show up and I can use the maximum capacity of the HDD, as I did with another dual boot laptop (compaq presario cq40). • How can I work around problems with certificate configuration in Remote Desktop Services?

  I am setting up a Remote Desktop Services farm, and am having trouble configuring certificates for it to use. A demonstration of the problem I'm seeing can be found in Step #4. At this point I am convinced that there are problems with the user interface, and am looking for ways around them. Is there any way to configure certificates in Remote Desktop Services so that the settings hold and are reflected in the GUI? If not, is there any way for me to verify that the settings are correct? Step #1 - Create certificate to be used. I've configured a certificate to use with RD Web Access. The certificate is stored with in the Certificates MMC on my RD Connection Broker, and I am configuring the farm from that computer. I found by letting RD Web Access generate its own certificate that the following properties are required: Enhanced Key Usage Server Authentication Client Authentication This may not be required, but the self-signed certificate includes it. Key Usage Digital Signature Key Agreement Subject Alternative Name DNS Name=domain.com Detour about self-signed certificate generation As a quick detour, I was able to work around a problem with creating self-signed certificates using powershell. The documentation for the New-RDCertificate cmdlet gives the following example: PS C:\> $password = ConvertTo-SecureString -string "password" -asplaintext -force New-RDCertificate -Role RDWebAccess -DnsName "test-rdwa.contoso.com" -Password $password -ConnectionBroker rdcb.contoso.com -ExportPath "c:\test-rdwa.pfx" Typing this into the shell will result in an error message claiming that a function, Get-Server cannot be found. Prior to using New-RDCertificate, you must import the RemoteDesktop Module with Import-Module RemoteDesktop. Step #2 - Observe out-of-box behavior The first time you visit the Deployment Properties dialog box by navigating to Server Manager - Remote Desktop Services - Collections and selecting "Edit Deployment Properties" from the "TASKS" dropdown list in the "COLLECTIONS" grouping, you will see the following screen: This window is misleading because the level field is listed as "Not Configured". If I understand correctly all three of the role services are using a self-signed certificate. For the RD Web Access role this can be verified by visiting the website: The certificate being used also appears in the Certificates MMC: Step #3 - Assign new certificate The Deployment Properties dialog box will allow me to select my existing certificate. The certificate must be placed within the local computers Certificates MMC in the "Personal" certificate store. The private key will need to be exportable, and you will need to provide the password. I temporarily exported my certificate to a file named temp.pfx with a password, and then imported it into Remote Desktop Services from there. Once this is done the GUI will indicate that it is ready to accept the new configuration. Once I click the "Apply" button, the GUI indicates success. This can be verified by visiting the RD Web Access web site a second time. There is no certificate error. Step #4 - The GUI fails to maintain its state If the GUI is closed and reopened, all of these settings appear to be lost. Actually, the certificate I configured is still being used. I am able to continue accessing the RD Web Access site without any certificate errors. Oddly, if I use the "Create new certificate..." button to generate a self-signed certificate this window will update to an "Untrusted" level. This setting will then be maintained through the opening and closing of the Deployment Properties dialog box. Is there anything I can do to have my settings appear to stick? I feel like something is wrong when the GUI claims I haven't fully configured certificates.

• My fresh installed ubuntu 12,4 won´t start without live usb drive

  I just installed a fresh copy of ubuntu 12,04 in my netbook, through a live USB drive. I used the whole HDD and erased an existent win 7 partition. It installed everything and then asked me to reboot. When I did that, after rebooting, it only appeared the writer marker on top of a black screen and only that. Then, i plugged in again my usb drive and reboot. It loaded, but in the loading screen sent me (once) an error about the hard drive, that some file was missing (sorry i coulnd't write down the exact message). After that, I tried to re install ubuntu using my USB drive, but it sends me inmediately to the login screen. How do I solve this?

  I'm currenty trying to port Ubuntu Touch to the Galaxy s4 International LTE (GI9505/ jfltexx). I've come to the point where I need to create a UCM directory but I don't know where and how I should call it. By "looking at /usr/share/alsa/ucm/apq8064-tabla-snd-card/" is the local Ubuntu PC directory or a directory on the downloaded CM meant? Same thing for "/proc/asound/cards" which should give a hint about what the directory should be called. 0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH HDA Intel PCH at 0xfb200000 irq 51 1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia HDA NVidia at 0xfb080000 irq 17 I dont think the directory should be called anything like this.
