Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Network Setup

Some background: I'm very much new to networking in general, and virtualization in particular. I'm trying to set up a series of VMs as we are transitioning to a thin client setup. I have been supplied a limited number of static ip addresses. The server is located in an offsite building which houses the network we use to connect to the internet, share folders etc. The setup I've been trying to go for is this: The host OS (Windows Server 2008 R2) is bound to one nic using one of the static ips (say, Nic1 and ip 10.255.6.61). I've set up another external virtual network attached to another physical nic , and a virtual private network attached to no nic. There is one VM running the same os (as the host). This VM is connected to both the external virtual network (and uses another static ip say Nic2 and ip 10.255.6.62) and also to the virtual private network (I gave it a static random ip 192.168.88.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0). This virtual private network is connected to all the other VMs. I'd like to share the internet connection with all the other VMs on the private virtual network, and so I installed the RRAS role on the server connected to Nic2, and selected the option to share the internet over the vpn. I've run through the RRAS wizard a few times, trying different configurations, but none of them seem to be letting the other vms connect to the 'net. The vms seem to connect to the virtual private network fine, they are assigned an ip address and everything, but no internet, and no rest of the network either. The other problem is in general I connect to the vms with RDP. Will that be possible with a setup like this? i.e. will the vms show up as computers on the network? If not, what are my other options? But I have data with escape chars like < because I need to show it as '<' for ex my data is <get-all-users> Filter apply only when I type < not for <. How can apply filter on this data?

this is the second time im asking this question because someone had to close my question for a reason which i still dont understand. this is the original question Why is my files,machine,help tab missing in ubuntu 11.10? Most importantly ,i cannot access the machine menu that should be there but isnt. im using ubuntu 11.10 with oracle 4.1.10 heres a picture of what ubuntu should look like,or maybe i am wrong, http://i.stack.imgur.com/JgM5S.png The reason why im asking,is because id like to run a usb key inside my virtual box,but since i cannot access machine,i cant access the devices manager either. Just for your information,ive already installed the guest additions.

Ubuntu Server - Virtual Box?

So I got VirtualBox just for Ubuntu Server, I'm currently Running Ubuntu 12.04 as my main OS. But when I got everything set up in Ubuntu Server 12.04, including my ports forwarded and a test Minecraft server up... I realized that nobody could join my public IP I sent out, not even me! I can connect to the ipv4 address. It acts like I didn't forward my ports. But I forwarded 25565 to Input and Output and they're both TCP and UDP. Is this just a virtual box issue or am I doing something wrong? * Using Eth0 wired connection

How do you find a functions virtual call address in assembly?

I've googled around but i'm not sure i am asking the right question or not and i couldn't find much regardless, perhaps a link would be helpful. I made a c++ program that shows a message box, then I opened it up with Ollydbg and went to the part where it calls MessageBoxW. The call address of MessageBoxW changes each time i run the app as windows is updating my Imports table to have the correct address of MessageBoxW. So my question is how do i find the virtual addres of MessageBoxW to my imports table and also how can i use this in ollydbg? Basically I'm trying to make a code cave in assembly to call MessageBoxW again. I got fairly close once by searching the executable with a hex editor and found the position of the call, and I think I found the virtual address. But when i call that virtual address in olly and saved it to the executable, the next time i opened it the call was replaced with a bunch of DB xyz (which looked like the virtual address but why did the call get removed? Sorry if my terminology is off as i'm new to this so i'm not quite sure what to call things.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various virtual machine image formats?

Xen and Virtualbox etc both support a range of different virtual machine image formats. These are: vmdk, vdi, qcow & qcow2, hdd & vhd. Without any bias toward a particular product, I'm wanting to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of the various formats both from a features perspective, robustness and speed? One piece of info I discovered in a forum post was this: "The major difference is that VDI uses relatively large blocks (1MB) when growing an image, and thus has less overhead for block pointers etc. but isn't ultimately space efficient in the sense that if a single byte is non-zero in such a 1MB block the entire space is used. VMDK in contrast uses 64K blocks, and thus has more management overhead and generally a bit less disk space consumption What offsets this is that VDI is more efficient when it comes to snapshots." You might be thinking, I want to know this because I want to know which format to choose? Not exactly, I'm developing some software which utilises these formats and want to support one or more of them. Simplicity, large disks and ease of development are my main drivers.

Does migrating 2 domain controllers between 2 datacentre requires both virtual machines to be shut down at the same time?

I was attempting to migrate 2 virtual machines that are domain controllers between 2 datacentres running ESX 3.5 and ESX 4.1. I was advised to shut down both domain controller at the same time during the migration process. This is to avoid USN Rollback and other replication issues. The following are the steps that I was planning to perform: 1. Shutdown both DC. 2. Copy both VMs files across to new datacentre using Veeam FastSCP (connection to both vCentre through IP address instead of hostname) 3. Power them up at new datacentre. 4. Configure Network interface/DNS/DHCP for both DCs in new datacentre I have tried to use Veeam FastSCP rather than VMware Standalone Converter is because its copying rather than converting. Someone also suggested that I use backup and restore app like Veeam backup and replication software. Sounds like a simple job, but after shutting down both DCs, the transfer rate using FastSCP is so slow registering only 1KB/s as oppose to the normal 1MB/s (or more). When that attempt to transfer failed, I tried to cold clone both DCs resulted in the both ESX hosts get disconnected. I have tried troubleshooting by referring to this - VMware KB - Diagnosing an ESX Server that is Disconnected or Not Responding in VirtualCenter It seems that the DNS being down is the caused of all unusual occurrence. The moment I powered up the DCs via VMware console command, the ESX host were able to connect to the vCentre again. How can I avoid such a pitfall again? Am I doing it correctly? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Azure Virtual Machines - what fault tolerance do they provide?

We are thinking about moving our virtual machines (Hyper-V VHDs) to Windows Azure but I haven't found much about what kind of fault tolerance that infrastructure provides. When I run VHD in Azure, I've got two questions: Is my VHD and all the data in it safe? I think that uploaded VHDs use the "Storage" infrastructure so they should be automatically replicated to multiple disks and geographically distributed but should I still make a full-image backup just to be safe? (Note that of course I will be backing up the actual data inside VMs that I care about; I just want to know if there is a chance greater than 0.0000001% that one day I will receive an email from Microsoft telling me that my VM is gone and that I should create or restore it from scratch). Do I need to worry about other things regarding the availability of my VMs? I mean, when I have an on-premise server I need to worry about the hardware itself, about the host operating system, what would happen if my router failed, if my Hyper-V's C: drive failed etc. Am I right in thinking that with Azure, their infrastructure takes care of all of this? nginx problem accessing virtual hosts

I am setting up nginx as a reverse proxy. The server runs on directadmin and lamp stack. I have nginx running on port 81. I can access all my sites (including virtual ips) on the port 81. However when I forward the traffic from port 80 to 81, the virtual ips have a message saying "Apache is running normally". Server IPs are fine, and I can still access virtual IP's on 81. Dijit.Dialog irregular behaviour of scroll bar making dialog box unusable

I use a dojo dialog box to display a page pulled from another part of the site. The page being pulled is long - so I use the css attribute: `max-height: 900px; overflow:auto; To make sure it displays properly. For a long page, it displays a 900px high dialog box with a scrollbar down the right hand side side. However the scrollbar is going up to the dialog box title and shifting the close box icon to the left. In internet explorer, when a user moves his mouse of the close box icon, it moves to the right. If you move your mouse to the right it moves left - so you can never actually close the box with the icon. I have tried clearing the content in the box and just making it very long, and the same thing still happens. Oddly enough, if I close the window using esc and click pull up the dialog box again, it works fine. Any way I can make it display properly at all times. I am using Dojo version 1.3. Thanks

Is there such a thing as a virtual COM port receipt printer?

I'm debugging some code that writes directly to a COM port in order to print receipts on a receipt printer. The printer model is something like an Epsom TM-88. Instead of printing reams of thermal paper while debugging this code, it would be nice if I could use some kind of virtual printer. Like PDFCreator or FinePrint, but with a virtual COM port instead of a virtual windows printer. Does anyone know of such a thing? Edit: The code sends control characters to get bold text and other formatting. I'd like to see this in the output if possible.

How to place a drop down for the virtual column, in the ruby on rails. The virutal column does not exist in my table , but I want to get the value from the drop down ,when user saves the data. for example, product_price is a virtual column , which doesn't exist in my database table. But I would like to have a dropdown, with product price to be displayed from another table. And when user selects the product_price, the selected product_price should be gettable in an object as self.product_price. Virtual column for labels is working fine, but for drop down its not working for me..any info woud be Thankful...

Should we create Virtual Machine environment so a consultant can develop in similiar environment?

This is a large project and currently there are only 3 developers working on it. We have some money in the budget to contract development help from a software consulting firm. However, because the location of our business it would be beneficial if the consultant could do their development off-site. Also, our company policy doesn't allow contract help to VPN into our network, so that is not an option. My question is, would it be a good idea to create a Virtual Machine that copies our internal environment (particularly our database and WCF service) and give the consultant the Virtual Machine image so that they can replicate the environment at their place of work? I haven't worked much with Virtual Machines, so I'm not sure if this is a good idea or if there are huge obstacles that I'm not thinking of. If anyone has ever done anything like this, it would be great to hear the pros/cons. Any help would be appreciated.

How would I write a virtual CD/DVD burner that would allow programs that burn to write to ISO?

I want to write an app that will allow a program like iTunes which normally will recognize a DVD/CD burner to recognize a virtual one and then write to it creating an ISO. I would guess to use C/C++... can someone point me in the right direction as to how this can be done? Basically it would be a virtual CD/DVD burner that would output an ISO file to the hard drive. I want to do this for both the usefulness of it as well as the challenge, just need an idea of how to approach it, have no idea how to write virtual hardware.

What I mean is: if I have base class: class Base { public: virtual void f() = 0; }; in some publications I saw that to override this some authors would just say: void f(); and some would still repeat the virtual keyword before void. Just how much do I want to make virtual?

I am writing an abstract superclass where literally every method is going to be overridden. There is some default functionality I could implement, but most of the time it's enough to leave the implementation to the subclass writer. Since just about every method is going to be overwritten, how much should I make virtual and how much should I just leave as regular methods? In the current incarnation, everything is virtual, but I still haven't let this loose to anyone to use, so the design is flexible. What advantages/disadvantages are there to virtual functions? Links to good reading material about this would be appreciated.

Strict security and virtual host isolation with Nginx?

I currently have an Apache web server set up under which each virtual host is isolated using HTTPD-ITK and the AppArmor module. Each virtual host's workers are setuid/setgid by the server and are then placed in an AppArmor profile. I'm looking to use Nginx but I can't find any documentation on setting it up so that rather than the worker processes being shared between all virtual hosts, worker processes are per virtual host (and thus can be setuid / setgid). Is there any way to do this under Nginx?

An efficient setup of several VPSs on one box?

Hello all, I hope its ok to ask this question on serverfault, its not an actual fault but more of an implementation advice request. I would like to have a dedicated server that I can deploy my own VPSs on. These VPS will be various windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. I was thinking of buying a large Linux based dedicated server and then running VMWare Server or Virtualbox and adding my own images on there for each OS but I am thinking this isn't going to be cost effective and easy to maintain. I am hoping someone can help me with the perfect setup that is both cost effective and efficient so that I can have 6 VPS at my disposal that I can easily control. Thanks all for any help.

Windows clients unable to access Samba share on AD joined Linux box every 7 days

The problem: Every 7 days, 2 Windows Servers are unable to access a SMB/CIFS share. It will start working after a handful of hours. The environment: OpenFiler Linux box joined to 2003 AD Domain Foreground app on Win2003 server access the SMB/CIFS share with windows credentials Another process on Win2008 access the share via SQL Server with windows credentials The Samba version on the Linux box is 3.4.5. Security is set to ADS wbinfo and getent return back expected users and groups Does not look to be a double hop issue as it's always the 2 accounts, regardless of the calling user. There is a DNS entry in both forward and reverse lookup zone for the linux box The linux box's computer object in active directory shows that it was modified around/at the same time that the two clients started failing to access the share Trying to access the share via IP works when by name does not Rebooting the Windows server takes care of it (it's production and only restarted it once) Restarting smbd, winbind, nmbd had no effect Error in samba log for the client in question: smbd/sesssetup.c:342(reply_spnego_kerberos) Failed to verify incoming ticket with error NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE! The Question: Does this look like the machine account password is changing (hence the AD object showing the updated modified date) or are the two windows clients unable to request a new ticket that works against this linux box?

ASP.NET MVC app on IIS7 with WebForms content is throwing NTLM authenticate box

I have an ASP.NET MVC app that also contains some WebForms content (for SSRS ReportViewer). This is deployed to IIS7 and the MVC pages of the app work fine, but when I try to browse to the aspx page I am prompted with the NTLM auth box. I do not have NTLM enabled, I only have Anonymous auth enabled. I have this deployed and fully working on an IIS6 box, the only other difference is that the IIS6 box is in our company domain, but the IIS7 box is not (I fail to see how this could be the issue as the MVC stuff is working fine). Any thoughts? Thanks.
