• Getting a substring in Ruby by x number of chars

  I'm trying to produce some Ruby code that will take a string and return a new one, with a number x number of characters removed from its end - these can be actual letters, numbers, spaces etc. Ex: given the following string a_string = "a1wer4zx" I need a simple way to get the same string, minus - say - the 3 last digits. In the case above, that would be "a1wer". The way I'm doing it right now seems very convoluted: an_array = a_string.split(//,(a_string.length-2)) an_array.pop new_string = an_array.join Any ideas?

  I have a string based code that can be either two or three characters in length and I am looking for some help in creating a function that will increment it. Each 'digit' of the code has a value of 0 to 9 and A to Z. some examples: the first code in the sequence is 000 009 - next code is - 00A 00D - next code is - 00E AAZ - next code is - AB0 the last code is ZZZ. Hope this makes some sense.

  I'm using a macro and I think it works fine - #define CStrNullLastNL(str) {char* nl=strrchr(str,'\n'); if(nl){*nl=0;}} So it works to zero out the last newline in a string, really its used to chop off the linebreak when it gets left on by fgets. So, I'm wondering if I can "return" a value from the macro, so it can be called like func( CStrNullLastNL( cstr ) ) ; Or will I have to write a function

Weeks ago, Rspec used to migrate the database to the last version automatically when executing 'rake spec', but now it doesn't do it automatically, I have to implement everything for myself.   Can you explain this? I want to eval values and calculations from two different sources. One source gives me the following info(programmatically): 'a = 2' The second source gives me this expression to evaluate: 'a + 3' This works: a = 2 eval 'a + 3' This also works: eval 'a = 2; a + 3' But what I really need is this, and it doesn't work: eval 'a = 2' eval 'a + 3' I would like to understand the difference, and how can I make the last option work.   I am having a problem figuring how to check a string for the same characters in a row then count that same character in a row then printing it out then giving the location of the last occorance of that character count then printing it out then moving to the next character in the string that is different then the previous character and the program is case sensitive. So the input could be: aaaaAAAbbbddccc How would I compress this string to: a4A3b3d2c3 ? and then decompress it?

  I'm trying to write a regular expression which specifies that text should start with a letter, every character should be a letter, number or underscore, there should not be 2 underscores in a row and it should end with a letter or number. At the moment, the only thing I have is ^[a-zA-Z]\w[a-zA-Z1-9_] but this doesn't seem to work properly since it only ever matches 3 characters, and allows repeated underscores. I also don't know how to specify requirements for the last character.
