• GWT - Retrieve size of a widget that is not displayed

  I need to set the size of an absolutePanel regarding to its child size, but the getOffset* methods return 0 because (i think) the child as not been displayed yet. A Quick example: AbsolutePanel aPanel = new AbsolutePanel(); HTML text = new HTML(/*variable lenght text*/); int xPosition = 20; // actually variable aPanel.add(text, xPosition, 0); aPanel.setSize(xPosition + text .getOffsetWidth() + "px", "50px"); // 20px 50px I could also solve my problem by using the AbsolutePanel size to set the child position and size: AbsolutePanel aPanel = new AbsolutePanel(); aPanel.setSize("100%", "50px"); HTML text = new HTML(/*variable lenght text*/); int xPosition = aPanel.getOffsetWidth() / 3; // Once again, getOffsetWidth() returns 0; aPanel.add(text, xPosition, 0); In both case, i have to find a way to either: retrieve the size of a widget that has not been displayed be notified when a widget is displayed

The code can be found here: jquery.mobile-1.1.0.js I need to access properties of a jQuery mobile JS-object but is not sure how that is possible. In the jquery.mobile-1.1.0.js and mobile.slider is the following (see extend on line 5967): $.widget( "mobile.slider", $.mobile.widget, { ... _create: function() { ... $.extend( this, { slider: slider, handle: handle, valuebg: valuebg, dragging: false, beforeStart: null, userModified: false, mouseMoved: false }); Primarily the property I would like to read is the "dragging". • What is the definition of a Service object ?

  I've been working a lot with PHP. But recently i was sent on a work wich use Java. In PHP i used to do a lot of Singleton object but this pattern has not the same signification in Java that it has in PHP. So i wanted to go for an utility class (a class with static method) but my chief doesn't like this kind of classes and ask me to go for services object. So my guess was that a service object is just a class with a constructor that implement some public methods... Am i right ?

• Return an opaque object to the caller without violating type-safety

  I have a method which should return a snapshot of the current state, and another method which restores that state. public class MachineModel { public Snapshot CurrentSnapshot { get; } public void RestoreSnapshot (Snapshot saved) { /* etc */ }; } The state Snapshot class should be completely opaque to the caller--no visible methods or properties--but its properties have to be visible within the MachineModel class. I could obviously do this by downcasting, i.e. have CurrentSnapshot return an object, and have RestoreSnapshot accept an object argument which it casts back to a Snapshot. But forced casting like that makes me feel dirty. What's the best alternate design that allows me to be both type-safe and opaque?

• Can you use Javascript to detect a file download window created server side?

  I have a jQuery plugin I use to dynamically create and render a form on a default.aspx asp.net page, then submit it. The page it gets submitted to is a pdf.aspx page. The page builds a PDF then uses Response.Write to write the file (application/pdf) to the browser. I use the same method to render XLSX files to the browser as well. It works really great, but I need a callback or some event to tell the button when to stop spinning. This prevents the user from continuously clicking the Excel or PDF buttons. Does anyone know a way to detect the file dialog window when it was not created using javascript? I am also open to other methods of callback from the server side as well.

• strange bug - how to pause a java program?

  I'm trying to: display a text in a jLabel, wait for two seconds, then write a new text in the jLabel this should be simple, but I get a strange bug: the first text is never written, the application just waits for 2 seconds and then displays the final text. here is the example code: private void testButtonActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) { displayLabel.setText("Clicked!"); // first method with System timer /* long t0= System.currentTimeMillis(); long t1= System.currentTimeMillis(); do{ t1 = System.currentTimeMillis(); } while ((t1 - t0) < (2000)); */ // second method with thread.sleep() try { Thread.currentThread().sleep(2000); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} displayLabel.setText("STOP"); } with this code, the text "Clicked!" is never displayed. I just get a 2 seconds - pause and then the "STOP" text. I tried to use System timer with a loop, or Thread.sleep(), but both methods give the same result.

I understand why I can't do this - any recommendations for a design that will achieve much the same result? (For clarity - what I am trying to do is provide a library with an abstract base class but the concrete versions MUST implement a few properties/methods themselves and yes, there are good reasons for keeping it static.)

• Rails: Thread won't affect database unless joined to main Thread

  I have a background operation I would like to occur every 20 seconds in Rails given that some condition is true. It kicked off when a certain controller route is hit, and it looks like this def startProcess argId = self.id t = Thread.new do while (Argument.isRunning(argId)) do Argument.update(argId) Argument.markVotes(argId) puts "Thread ran" sleep 20 end end end However, this code does absolutely nothing to my database unless I call "t.join" in which case my whole server is blocked for a long time (but it works). Why can't the read commit ActiveRecords without being joined to the main thread? The thread calls methods that look something like def sample model = Model.new() model.save() end but the models are not saved to the DB unless the thread is joined to the main thread. Why is this? I have been banging my head about this for hours.

• How to parse the multipart data in a restful service...

  I have written a restful web service in c# and .net using the Restful Starter Kit that receives a mime multipart form via a stream. The multipart form contains a small xml fragment and a small file binary. I have read the stream in, and I have also written some code to parse the data to obtain the XML and the file binary. However, I feel that there should be some methods already written in the .net classes to allow me to access the two parts of the multipart form without having to parse the data myself. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

  I'm building a simple client-server chat system. The clients send data to the server and the server resends the data to all the other clients. I'm using the TcpListener and Network stream classes to send the data between the client and the server. The fields I need to send are, for example: name, text, timestamp, etc. I separate them using the ASCII character 29. I'm also using ASCII character 30 to mark the end of the streamed data. The data is encoded with UTF8.. Is this a good approach? Will I run into problems? Are there better methods? UPDATE: Probably my question was misunderstood, so I explain it better..   Django view points to a function, which can be a problem if you want to change only a bit of functionality. Yes, I could have million keyword arguments and even more if statements in the function, but I was thinking more of an object oriented approach. For example, I have a page that displays a user. This page is very similar to page that displays a group, but it's still not so similar to just use another data model. Group also has members etc... One way would be to point views to class methods and then extend that class. Has anyone tried this approach or has any other idea?

  Task: I have a camera mounted on the end of our assembly line, which captures images of produced items. Let's for example say, that we produce tickets (with some text and pictures on them). So every produced ticket is photographed and saved to disk as image. Now I would like to check these saved images for anomalies (i.e. compare them to an image (a template), which is OK). So if there is a problem with a ticket on our assembly line (missing picture, a stain,...), my application should find it (because its image differs too much from my template). Question: What is the easiest way to compare pictures and find differences between them? Do I need to write my own methods, or can I use existing ones? It would be great if I just set a tolerance value (i.e. images can differ for 1%), put both images in a function and get a return value of true or false :) Tools: C# or VB.NET, Emgu.CV (.NET wrapper for OpenCV) or something similar

  Halo, i am interest in methods, which http analyzer uses to capture data. I would like to write program which saves emails sent via web based clients. The problem is https and HTTP Analyzer solves it, but i dont know how. I got one interesting answer on my question before, but it doesnt reveal as much as i would like to know. Programs like HTTP Analyzer can catch the HTTPS data because they insert themselves in the HTTPS stack. As a result, they get the data after it's generated but before it's being encrypted and put in IP packets. This is highly non-trivial. How it is possible to make? If you have any interesting articles solving this issue, please let me know.

The question is how can I refer to it?   I know how the push() and pop() methods in a typical implementation of a Queue/Linked List work but what I do want to know is what you actually define as a push or a pop? When can you name a method push()/pop()? What makes the insert()/add() method in a typical Tree implementation not a push()? My understanding is that push()ing means putting something to a position some special pointer is pointing to, and pop()ping an element means putting some object away some pointer is pointing to, but it doesn't seem to be clearly defined. Or does the naming matter at all?

In the original string I got, I can replace the string such as to something else. BUT, in the same original string, if I want to replace a much long string such as the following, it won’t work. • Cast vector<T> to vector<const T>

  I have a member variable of type vector (where is T is a custom class, but it could be int as well.) I have a function from which I want to return a pointer to this vector, but I don't want the caller to be able to change the vector or it's items. So I want the return type to be const vector* None of the casting methods I tried worked. The compiler keeps complaining that T is not compatible with const T. Here's some code that demonstrates the gist of what I'm trying to do; vector<int> a; const vector<const int>* b = (const vector<const int>* ) (&a); This code doesn't compile for me.   Recently I've bumped into a realization/implementation of the Singleton design pattern for C++. It has looked like this (I have adopted it from the real life example): // a lot of methods are omitted here class Singleton { public: static Singleton* getInstance( ); ~Singleton( ); private: Singleton( ); static Singleton* instance; }; From this declaration I can deduce that the instance field is initiated on the heap. That means there is a memory allocation. What is completely unclear for me is when exactly the memory is going to be deallocated? Or is there a bug and memory leak? It seems like there is a problem in the implementation. My main question is, how do I implement it in the right way?
