• Facebook canvas app ASP.NET MVC HttpException: Invalid Model

  I am working on a Facebook tab application. I am using asp.net MVC 2 with the "official" Microsoft Facebook SDK. Most of my views are working just fine. However, I have one that is causing a huge mess. I am simply returning a List<Tags> to the view and as my ViewModel. This problematic view is simply displaying the list in a foreach loop. Whenever navigate to this view I get a "System.Web.HttpException: Invalid Model" exception. The most puzzling part of all this is that the same code is running without fail on our regular(non-Facebook) app that works just fine with the same code. Any insight into why Facebook and asp.net MVC 2 would be causing this behavior would be much appreciated.

  I once built a very good web application in ASP (classic) back in 2001 and extensively used XmlHttpRequest object in it. (I was lucky that the clients were only using IE, and only IE supported this object at that time). Then later when people started talking about AJAX in 2005, It felt good to have used something ahead (or early) of its time. Well, maybe this does not qualify to be listed as something done ahead of its time. Which programming technology/technique/practice have you done that was ahead of this time. • Generating a static website from a set of content data (possibly with webgen, webby or a similar too

  My company (an engineering firm) is looking to redesign their website with some dynamic content. We have a nice portfolio of projects that we'd like to present on our site by category. To elaborate, I'd like to have a "Projects Category" menu, where you can choose a sub-project category (such as churches, schools, etc) which links to a page with images of all projects which have been tagged with that category attribute. Clicking on an image would then take you to a detailed page for that project. I have done a good bit of asp and jsp page development, but I've always worked on the front end in an enterprise environment - I've never built a production site from the back end. The advice I've gotten so far is that a full-blown CMS solution would be somewhat overkill, as we won't have a large hit count, and we'll be displaying a few hundred projects at most. One big-picture choice I appear to have - whether to dynamically generate the pages (with asp or jsp) or to use a tool to generate a set of static html pages. The tool would build the menus, project summary pages, and individual project pages based on a set of data I could provide (in the form of a database or text file.) I'm leaning towards trying to use a tool like webgen or webby to statically generate the site due to our current web hosting situation. Any thoughts on which approach is more appropriate? Is webgen or webby capable of doing what I am trying to do? Or can anyone recommend other web authoring tools better equipped to accomplish this? Thanks for any feedback!

• validating creation by post_id and ip_address - Ruby on Rails

  I have created a blog application using Ruby on Rails which includes the ability to vote on posts. A user can click vote and a record is created in the vote table. I am now trying to limit that same person from voting for a post multiple times. class Post has_many :votes end class Vote belongs_to :post end When a vote record is created I am using the VotesController to pass the :post_id and using a hidden field in the view to pass the ip_address (both to the vote table). I am wondering if there is a way to add a validation to the Vote Model that searches to see if a post_id has an ip_address that matches the person requesting to vote. I have tried simply using the validates_uniqueness_of :ip_address but that restricts the user from voting on any post. I just want to restrict the user from voting on a particular post that they have already voted on. Is there a way to do this through validation?

• Restart IIS7 webapp for debug in VS2008

  I'm developing an ASP.NET asyc generic handler which uses a static System.Threading.Timer instance to feed data to the response output stream while the context is in the asynchronous phase. I'm having issues at startup that I'd like to debug. Currently, because of the long-lived nature of the timer, I'm manually killing w3wp.exe in order to cause the application to restart. I'm aware that there are other ways to do this, but this is the best workflow I can find! Isn't there a way to force a cold start when I hit f5, instead of the standard VS approach of attaching to the existing IIS process?

• Java WebApp: Loading resource from .jar located in WEB-INF

  There are a lot of similar questions, but, probably, mine is a little bit different: What is the right way to load resource from inside of .jar file located in WEB-INF/lib folder (if I know the jar file name and the name of the class it resource belongs to), while Web Application is running? Should I use getServletContext().getResourceAsStream(?) for this purpose or the <name-of-known-class>.getResourseAsStream(?), and what path do I need to specify there? So, the structure is: /WEB-INF /classes /some/package/name ?.class #some Java code or Servlet that tries to read 'required-file.xml' /lib /<jar-with-known-name>.jar /another/package/with/known/name SomeKnownClass.class required-file.xml

• What technical/legal responsibilities do I have when hosting images uploaded by others?

  You may argue that this question has a legal flavor to it, and that would be correct. Still, it is also a question from a developer's perspective that may help others. I'm building an image community web site/application. Users can upload images. During upload, users have to select the license (copyrighted, attribution non-commercial or public domain). No matter which license they choose, it is just a piece of data. No matter the license, all users can view all images and also download all images, as you normally do on websites. My question is: what responsibility do I have as a "platform" to comply with these licenses? Do I need to actively prevent certain actions on these images, and into what extend? Is displaying the license enough to be legally safe? What if one of my users uploads images for which he has no license? Is it enough to just implement a "report this" feature?

• How to stop the Bottle webserver when started from subprocess

  Hello all, I would like to embed the great Bottle web framework into a small application (1st target is Windows OS). This app starts the bottle webserver thanks to the subprocess module. import subprocess p = subprocess.Popen('python websrv.py') The bottle app is quite simple @route("/") def index(): return template('index') run(reloader=True) It starts the default webserver into a Windows console. All seems Ok except the fact that I must press Ctrl-C to close the bottle webserver. I would like that the master app terminates the webserver when it shutdowns. I can't find a way to do that (p.terminate() doesn't work in this case unfortunately) Any idea? Thanks in advance

• Libraries for developing NCPDP SCRIPT based systems (a standard for e-prescribing)

  What are (based on experiences) best (commercial or open source) libraries for developing NCPDP-based systems? Background: NCPDP (National Council for Prescription Drug Programs) is a not-for-profit, ANSI-accredited, standards development organization. One of it's standards is the SCRIPT Standard for Electronic Prescribing, which allows PHARMACY, PRESCRIBER (i.e. Physician) and PAYERS (patient or more often insurer) communicate. So the SCRIPT standard is about data transmission. Problem: One step in implementing such systems is to develop models for data based on SCRIPT standard. These models should have utilities for serializing/deserializing to/from SCRIPT binary format and SCRIPT XML format (there are two distinct formats here; both must be supported). Here rises the problem (for me at least). To develop this subsystem for handling the model, implementing serializing and deserializing facilities and keep it uptodate with the SCRIPT standard specifications is a lot of work; it needs it's own team and team management issues (to support a standard implementation). So I am looking for a solution to this problem; to keep standard implementation out of the way and focusing on main problems. Thanks to all (Thankyou Freiheit for your hints!) Edit 2: Thanks to all for help! NCPDP (National Council for Prescription Drug Programs) is an standard for e-prescribing. It defines two formats for message transmission: binary and XML. Implementing XML is somehow easier because it is a standard format which in turn gives us more tooling options. The binary format has a very big specification and time-consuming to implement. I did not find an open source solution to work with. So I am looking for commercial alternatives. Edit 1: Please guide me; what's wrong with this question?

• Filtering at server or at client?

  I am thinking about how to build advertise site which works like twitter. That means, most user don't not visit the site by browser, they should run a dedicated client application on their PC or smart phone. Then they set some filters about what kind of advertise they like. And when new post that fulfill their needs appear, the client will make a notification. To make that client as real time as possible, it has to poll the server within a short time interval. The problem is, should I do the filtering at the server side when client polls, or should I simply transfer all new posts to client and let client do the filtering? Making server side filtering might cause too much CPU cycles of server, but transferring every post blindly to client might waste a lot of bandwidth. Just a brain game. :)

• Best way to deal with session handling in Zend Framework

  So I'm starting up in Zend framework and looking to implement a site-wide "User" session.... something I can easily access from ALL modules/controllers in the application. I'm like, should I make a new namespace in the library and extend the controller, like: MyLib_Controller_Action extends Zend_Controller_Action { protected $_userSession; function preDispatch(Zend_Controller_Request_Abstract $req) { $this->_userSession = new Zend_Session_Namespace('user'); } } ANd then have all my controllers/modules/etc extend from that? Or should I create a Plugin or what? How would you go about making this plugin to pass the user session to the controller? Or do I do it in the bootstrap?? Again how to pass to controller? Also should I use Zend_Session_Namespace or Zend_Http_Cookie and also how do I encrypt and xss clean the cookie or is that did automagically?

• Why GWT? Advantages and Trade-Offs of Using This RIA Framework

  I'm new to stackoverflow and have been reading through a bunch of the "highest voted" questions for GWT. Several of these questions talk about the pitfalls or problems with GWT. In the articles: Which Javascript framework (jQuery vs Dojo vs … )? and Biggest GWT Pitfalls?, some posters seem to suggest that GWT is not lightweight enough or that there are better alternatives that may be used. Do most of you feel that there are problems with GWT that have not been fixed with GWT 2.0 -- which would make you inclined to suggest using a simpler framework for a new project? To some extent, shouldn't GWT be somewhat future-proof (since you don't have to worry about it changing drastically from release to release and since it is backed by Google)? I realize that the answer to this question depends greatly upon what you want to do or what you wish to make. I am looking at this from the perspective of starting a new web application that will eventually be used by millions of users.

• Managing Unique IDs in stateless (web) DB4O applications

  I'm playing around with building a new web application using DB4O - piles of fun and some really interesting stuff learned. The one thing I'm struggling with is DB4O's current lack of support for stateless applications (i.e. web apps, mostly) and the need for automatically-generated IDs. There are a number of creative and interesting approaches that I've been able to find that hook into DB4O's events, use GUIDs rather than numeric IDs or for whatever reason avoid using any system of ID at all. While each approach has its merits, I'm wondering if the less-elegant approach might equally be the best fit. Consider the following pseudo-code: If ID == 0 or null Set ID = (typeof(myObject)).Count myObject.Save It seems like such a blindingly simple approach, it's usually about here that I start thinking, "I've missed something really obvious".   Right from Jeff's blog: Software Engineering: Dead? I was utterly floored when I read this new IEEE article by Tom DeMarco (pdf). See if you can tell why. He quotes DeMarco, "I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that software engineering is an idea whose time has come and gone". Further, "What DeMarco seems to be saying -- and, at least, what I am definitely saying -- is that control is ultimately illusory on software development projects." I am writing these lines without context to invoke reading of the related subject. What are the views of the programming community here? I have started to realize that a community wiki is not getting the right amount of participation here. That is the reason I left this question out in the open, while still contemplating a change to CW. It was closed once, and I thought that was the end of it. But, now I see it was reopened and has more answers (all of which I have not yet read). However, I see a lot of CW requests and am forced to reconsider that. This is how I intend to make the CW decision here. There is a comment by Neil Butterworth requesting a CW at 12 upvotes -- "should be community wiki" There is a comment by Lance Roberts requesting no CW at 0 upvotes -- "+1 for not putting it in community wiki" The difference is 12 for a CW request at the moment If this difference becomes 5 more (that is 17), I'll move this question to CW, and it will not return back from there Of course, there is also a close vote at the moment; the question may be closed again.

  Hi all, I'm a somewhat experienced java ee developer, and I wish to complement my background by learning a newish language. I'm recently out of school where I did a ton of scientific computing and some functional programming, so I'm pretty comfortable with those families of languages. If at all possible, I'd like to pick a language with some market value, though I know this is tough to gauge. After snooping around a bit, the consensus seems to be one of Python/Ruby/Perl; how would each of these work with java in a web application environment, and in your opinion which complements it best? Any other suggestions for languages would also be welcome.

• How to access device settings on a Sony Ericsson mobile phone?

  Edited on April 29th Hello everyone, I recently bought a Sony Ericsson mobile phone which embeds Symbian S60 and I would like to add a missing feature myself. In fact I cannot actually disable Internet connection in an easy way when roaming, which cost me a lot of money last time I moved away ... So I would like to develop a little application that would just replace the actual Internet configuration with a fake configuration to avoid auto-connections. So what I would like to know is how can I access programmatically to my phone settings? I believe that this is possible but I do not really have a clue where to start. I know that Sony Ericsson provides a SDK to run Java applications on its customised JVM but Symbian is also providing a SDK to develop applications for S60 devices in many languages. The real questions is which SDK will provide an API able to access phone settings. This is not well documented so I am asking this question with the hope that someone here already had experience with development for Sony Ericsson/Symbian devices. Thanks. EDIT: It seems that I was totally wrong concerning my phone. This not based on any Symbian OS at all. This is pure Sony Ericsson so the only solution would be to look if Sony Ericsson extended J2ME functionality in their own JVM. I am gonna investigate on this.

I already set the webconfig to point to my error but I just doesn't work. I get this error: Server Error in application /. -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ The source can not be found. Description: HTTP 404. Perhaps you are looking for the source (or a dependency thereof) removed or is temporarily unavailable or has changed its name. Check the spelling of the URL. • Why does the ID of Google's OpenID implementation change?

  I'm trying to implement OpenId login for a web application. Whenever new user who logs in via OpenId I create a new user on the sustem, and among the data I store their openid URL, so that next time they login with that user. I'm testing this with my Gmail OpenID, and the problem is that everytime I do this, Google sends a different openid URL, that is, https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=SomethingThatChangesFromTimeToTime Of course I'm then not able to tell wheter this is or not a new user. I'm a bit puzzled: shouldn't the openid identifier always remain the same?

• How to Manage CSS Explosion

  I have been heavily relying on CSS for a website that I am working on (currently, everything is done as property values within each tag on the website and I'm trying to get away from that to make updates significantly easier). The problem I am running into, is I'm starting to get a bit of "CSS explosion" going on. It is becoming difficult for me to decide how to best organize and abstract data within the CSS file. For example: I am using a large number of div tags within the website (previously it was completely tables based). So I'm starting to get a lot of CSS that looks like this... div.title { background-color: Blue; color: White; text-align: center; } div.footer { /* Stuff Here */ } div.body { /* Stuff Here */ } etc. It's not too bad yet, but since I am learning here, I was wondering if recommendations could be made on how best to organize the various parts of a CSS file. What I don't want to get to is where I have a separate CSS attribute for every single thing on my website (which I have seen happen), and I always want the CSS file to be fairly intuitive. (P.S. I do realize this is a very generic, high-level question. My ultimate goal is to make it easy to use the CSS files and demonstrate their power to increase the speed of web development so other individuals that may work on this site in the future will also get into the practice of using them rather than hard-coding values everywhere.)

• advice on working on remote asp.net applications

  Hi folks, I'm a (relatively new) developer using asp.net with VB.NET. Currently all my applications are developed on my PC and then are built and moved onto the web server. I'm going to be working remotely for 3 months in which time I'll be connecting to the company network via VPN. What is the best way to access my projects? I need to have the projects stored on the company network so that others can access them too. So simply copying the projects to my laptop, working on them, then copying them back won't suffice. I tried to just open the projects off of the network share but am getting application trust problems. I'm just wondering what other developers do in this situation? Jonesy

• Trying to run psexec to remote to server and recycle app pool

  If I run this from my command prompt it works fine. psexec \ServerName cscript.exe iisapp.vbs /a AppName /r I'm trying to do the same thing with C# console app. I'm using the below code but most of the time the application hangs and doesn't complete, and the few times it does it throws an error code. Am I doing this wrong? • How to simulate postback in nested usercontrols?

  Hi all, I'm doing an asp.net application with one page. In this page, I have one usercontrol defined. This usercontrol has a menu (three buttons) and 3 usercontrols defined too. Depending on the clicked button one of the three usercontrols turn to visible true or false. In these three usercontrols I have a button and a message, and I want to show the message "It's NOT postback" when the button of the menu is clicked, and when the button of the usercontrol is clicked the message will be "YES, it's postback!!!". The question is that using property "IsPostBack" of the usercontrol or the page the message will never be "It's NOT postback" because of the clicked button of the menu to show the nested usercontrol. This is the structure of the page: page parent usercontrol menu nested usercontrol 1 message button nested usercontrol 2 nested usercontrol 3 I know it can be done using ViewState but, there is a way to simulate IsPostBack property or know when is the true usercontrol postback? • JLabel withing another JLabel

  I want to do a very simple thing with java swing and I'm not being able to. I added a jLabel as it is the only object using java swing that can hold an image (using the icon property)...at least I wasn't able to set an image using other objects. Now I want to add another jlabel in top of the first one with another image so it can be "clicked" independently from the "background" label. But whenever I try to add it using the graphical editor or by doing jLabel1.add(jLabel2) it doesn't work...it simply sets next to the label1 but not on top of it. This is in order to do a java application like the Tic Tac Toe game...so I can have the background which are squares (first label) and the others the "X" and "O". board This might be the board and I want to put labels on each square so they can be the pieces.

  I have a friend that is moving a web application from one server over to another. The new server has the same settings as the first server, however, he's running into a Security issue. Here's the error details: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. The Event Viewer does not point to anything specific in the web.config file or anything. The web applicaiton is on the C: drive. This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 server with a brand new IIS 7 installation. IIS is set in classic mode for this app pool.
