• Cannot navigate Microsoft store after app install / update

  Every time i go to the store and install a new app or update an existing one, I go back to the main screen of Store after a few screen refreshes. And then oddly, scrolling doesn't work and neither do the buttons, although the Tiles are fine. I then have to close the app and then re-open it and things are back to normal. I don't know if this is a weird bug or just the way it is. Could anyone please confirm and / or give a possible explanation?

• How to revert to Eclipse's old behavior when double-clicking on frames or windows, in Juno?

  I find Eclipse Juno very counter-intuitive. In my workspace, I used to just have the package view at the left, my code on the right, and whenever I'm printing something in the console, that's only when the console frame shows up from the bottom right. When you double click on a particular window, it either only goes fullscreen within Eclipse, or back to its original size together with the size of the other frames. In Juno, however, it seems that frames are put on layers on top of each other. When I print something to the console, the output frame only shows up as a small, useless square to my right. When I double-click, it goes full screen. When I double-click again, it occupies the full right frame, hiding my code. I double-click again and it goes full screen, then it double-clicks before it shares the right frame with my code on top of it. Then when I minimize it, it goes to the side. Any way to go back to the good old days of Eclipse? Thanks.

• suddenly can't connect to Windows 7 PC from xbmc

  I have xbmc installed on a softmodded classic xbox and all of a sudden I cannot connect to the shared folders on my Windows 7 PC. Well, it can connect but it wants a username and password, but none exist on my computer. It's been several weeks since I last used it, but it was working fine then! and no particular changes I can think of aside from I guess a few Windows updates. I've seen reference online to Windows Live essentials causing issues with file sharing, but I don't even have that installed. And I made sure to tick 'turn off password protected sharing' in my advanced network setup. I had the guest account turned off and working fine before, and tried turning it on but no luck. I can access my shared folders fine from other Computers and a ps3. I've read a couple threads of similar situations on various folders and none of their solutions have worked.

• If Nvidia Shield can stream a game via wifi, why can I not do the same via ethernet to any other PC?

  I think it absurd that a wireless game streaming solution is the *first to hit the market when a 1000mbps+ Ethernet connection would accomplish the same feat with roughly 6x the available bandwidth. I can only assume that there must be some reason behind this or a limitation preventing this, but what? 150mbps wifi is in no way superior to a 1000mbps LAN connection aside from well wireless mobility. Not only that but I have a secondary laptop and desktop which should by hardware comparison completely outperform anything the Tegra in the Nvidia Shield can do. Is this all just a marketing scheme to force people to buy the shield for the streaming benefit? Chief among these is that NVIDIA’s Shield handheld game console will be getting a microconsole-like mode, dubbed “Shield Console Mode”, that will allow the handheld to be converted into a more traditional TV-connected console. In console mode Shield can be controlled with a Bluetooth controller, and in accordance with the higher resolution of TVs will accept 1080p game streaming from a suitably equipped PC, versus 720p in handheld mode. With that said 1080p streaming will require additional bandwidth, and while 720p can be done over WiFi NVIDIA will be requiring a hardline GigE connection for 1080p streaming (note that Shield doesn’t have Ethernet, so this is presumably being done over USB). Streaming aside, in console mode Shield will also support its traditional local gaming/application functionality. - http://www.anandtech.com/show/7435/nvidia-consolidates-game-streaming-tech-under-gamestream-brand-announces-shield-console-mode ^ This is not acceptable for me for a number of reasons not to mention the ridiculousness of having a little screen+controller unit sitting there while using a secondary controller and screen instead. That kind of redundant absurdity exemplifies how wrong of a solution that is. They need a second product for this solution without the screen or controller for it to make sense... at which point your just buying a little computer that does what most other larger computers do better. All that is required, by my understanding, is the ability to decode H.264 video compression and transmit control/feedback so by any logical comparison, one (Nvidia especially) should have no difficulty in creating an application for PC's (win32/64 environment) that does the exact same thing their android app does. I have 2 video cards capable of streaming (encoding) H.264 so by right they must be capable of decoding it I would think. I haven't found anything stating plans to allow non-shield owners to do this. Can a third party create this software or does it hinge on some limitation that only Nvidia can overcome? (*) - perhaps this isn't the first but afaik it is the first complete package.

  I am trying to open port 80 and 3690 for HTTP and svnserve respectively. I have Windows Firewall off, and have tried temporarily disabling Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise, to no avail. According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, both ports 80 and 3690 are still blocked. I can't think of what would be blocking them if Windows Firewall and my antivirus are disabled. • How to set a theme for Windows XP to use before a use logs in?

  If Windows XP "welcome screen" is disabled (manually or by joining a domain) an ordinary window is used to log-in (like it was in Windows 2000). This window is styled with default Windows XP "Luna" theme (blue window title, etc). All theme customizations (including turning them off at all to use plain Win2000/98 window style) are normally applied after a user logs-in. How can I alter this? I'd like either to turn off visual styles at all or to apply "Zune" styling to BEFORE a user logs in (and it'd be good to use the same settings as default for new users created).

• Unable to log in due to freeze, occasional error message

  I'm new to Ubuntu. And I have some problems now. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and burned it onto a CD. Then I load it in my conputer, it's easy. But when I finished those and restarted the computer, the problem comes: After I choose to log in the Ubuntu system,the screen stays in pink, and it can't jump into (about 30 min), and then I have no choices but to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot. Another time I choose Ubuntu to log in, it shows on the screen that "BusyBox v1.18.4 ...... built-in shell ...... initramfs". However the Live CD works very well. What’s more, there is a Windows 7 partition on the hard drive. (Windows 7 is also okay.) But I leave more than 20GB on the hard drive to Ubuntu. When I installed Ubuntu, I only made two partitions (swap and /). I don’t know where the problems happened and how to deal with them. And I hope someone can help me out with the troubles.

• Unauthorized computer use via keyboard or remote access?

  I’m suspecting my computer is being used when I’m not at home. This is happening either physically or remotely. My wireless switch is off. Is there any way possible to detect and/or monitor activity without purchasing software? My settings are being changed as well as passwords (Bios PW was changed and I cannot access Bios settings). I connect via the network cable. Is it possible for someone (in range) to connect to my laptop even if the wireless switch is off? This is a Dell Inspiron 1720 with the WLAN 1395 card. Here’s the kicker. When I try to download freeware for monitoring activity, I am not allowed to do this! ????

• Multiple Issues - USB booting Ubuntu 12.04

  I've been using a Ubuntu 12.04 off a bootable USB stick so I can have a portable OS. Also, OS variety. I've been using it for a while and I'm still have a few issues. First and most annoying, it often lags/freezes. I'm not sure what word you would use for it, windows will often stop working and go dark/not responding from anywhere between 10 seconds to a full minute and on some occasions, even longer. However, the window eventually starts working again. Similarly, sometimes the whole system will freeze, not just the window. The mouse will still move, but nothing will work. No clicking, no menus, not keyboard shortcuts. Again, it will usually start working. I'm liking Ubuntu a lot, but those issues can make it annoying to use sometimes. For example, it will ALWAYS freeze at some point if I try to watching a Youtube video and I'll have to wait for a minute or so until it starts responding, again. Aside from the lag/freezing, anytime I download packages, it will always say "package operation failed" when it's done, though it does seem to download/install. Another issue I'm having is with shutting down. If I open the logout/shutdown menu and click shutdown, it just logs me out and takes me to the login screen. If I try shutting down through the login screen, it won't do anything. As if I didn't even go to it. I've been using the terminal to reboot or shutdown when I need to. I've looked around for answers for all of these problems and still have yet to find a solution that works. Are these just normal issues with USB booting? I haven't installed Ubuntu to any computers, I've always done USB booting.

  I have P4 processor with nvidia card. Now if i don't connect to internet then my computer stays on for as much i can like 4-5 days. But if i plug in the ethernet wire. Do some surfing and leave computer as it is. Then computer fails. I mean The display on screen gets off Looks like something stopping the power supply to Harddisk. But motherboard stays on , FAN is still running , i can eject CD drive as well. But no display on monitor. I have to turn off and then turn on again. I tried formatting windows XP but again same problem

• Windows 2008 server unaccessible without traces in the event log

  I am trying to figure out why a Windows 2008 server became inaccessible in terms of RDP and access to a web application. The server was turned off and then on. Look at the event log at the time it went offline, I can't find anything. And looking at misc application logs, the system was running like normal after it went offline. It has to be said that by mistake the firewall was switched off earlier, so a lot of attempts had been done to access the SQL Server with the sa user as well as RDP login. But the attempts has been going on for days, so nothing new about that. Besides the event logs, is there anywhere else I can go to examine the cause of this? I am also in doubt whether or not a DOS attack or similar would show up in the event log. From a log for a backup application running on this server I can see that an attempt was done to access a remote IP after the server went offline, but got no connection.

• Windows 7 Taskbar doesn't remember configuration

  Hi all... I have my taskbar on Win7 all customized. I have it at the top of the screen, and i have the address bar, desktop toolbar, and a custom folder toolbar all turned on. I have it set to two rows, and have the taskbar and desktop on one row and the address bar and custom folder on the second row. When i shutdown then restart my computer it remembers that i have the taskbar at the top of the screen, but it does not remember the way i had the various bars organized, and it just makes it a single row with the bars all mushed together on one row. Anyone else had this/know how to fix it? Running Win7 Ultimate x64.

• PC shuts down when installing ubuntu?

  I'm now using ubuntu from USB, and I'd like to install ubuntu on my hard disk. I tried the option of removing Vista while installing ubuntu. However, near the end of the installation process (presumably the end because I can see some slideshows on how to start using ubuntu), the screen suddenly goes to black with white words running around on it. Soon the computer shuts down. After that, restarting leads to a black screen with only a small white cursor on the top left corner. The cursor keeps blinking and nothing happens. I found that I can alternatively choose to boot with USB by hitting F12 just when the computer starts. So I tried to reinstall ubuntu by running ubuntu on USB. One of the options of installation is to update ubuntu 11.04 to ubuntu 11.04, so it seems the ubuntu is already installed somehow. Anyways, I tried both update and delete and install option but the same thing happens as the 1st time (sometimes before reaching the end), while I still cannot start my PC as ubuntu (without USB). How may I install ubuntu properly?

Related to that, what programs are good for creating and editing screen casts on Mac? I am only familiar with Camtasia, maybe snapxpro (and Jing, which I think may only be for PC). I would mostly like to create a video like the one above, but if I could add in a few seconds of a screen-cast that would be nice.

• Inspiring People

  So I work with a few people that I feel are intelligent but don't seem to be working out well. After working with them for a while I have seen the flashes of brilliance but mostly I see a reliance on others. What I mean by this is that most times it seems like at the first moment of trouble they go ask for help. Now personally I am all for helping and spend a significant portion of time helping others with whatever they need, but after helping others for so long I have noticed a disturbing trend. These people seem terrified that they might make a mistake and because of this they don't try. So my question is how can I motivate someone who is afraid of making a mistake? In my career I have always learned the most by making mistakes and learning from them. Personally I feel that if I hadn't learned so much I would never have made it as far as I have. So how can I get them to discover that they have the ability to figure it out themselves and that if they make a mistake and learn from it they will be better off. I feel that if I can discover some way to properly motivate them that we all will be better off.

• Setting console resolution in Ubuntu Server 13.10 within VMware

  I've completed an install of Ubuntu Server 13.10 within VMware and am running into a problem configuring the console (non-graphical) resolution. When I was running Ubuntu Server 13.04, I ran into the same problem... posted the question here, which I later solved by editing /etc/default/grub thus: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash vga=789" I then ran sudo update-grub, sudo reboot and 13.04 stuck in a larger-size console mode... just what I wanted. BUT when I run the same commands in 13.10, during the reboot it changes to the new screen-res, BUT the screen stays black and I can't interact with it. I power down the VM, go back to a previous snapshot, and try again... and again. Since the hwinfo package is no longer available, I can't run sudo hwinfo --framebuffer to see what options are available. Ideas anyone? • Google Chrome with strange behavior

  I'm former Chromium-browser user, but after not upgrading the PPA for 2 months, I switched to Google Chrome browser yesterday. Everything is okay, except some strange behavior on some pages and crashing after loading "chrome://" configuration pages. The best known website with strange behavior is youtube, there is a picture what I see: When I open user menu in top right corner, it crashes that way and even after closing the menu, some parts of menu stay display. You may say it's Youtube problem, no, I have this problem at least on three other websites, here it is on Imgur: The problem isn't for the whole side, sometimes it happens from the middle of the screen. The interesting part is that it happens everytime in the same distance from the right border. When I check the DOM elements with the Developer tool, the overlay which shows element's position is rendered how it should be. What is more, if there is anchor after the crashed area, it works after clicking on it. Selecting text in crashed page is impossible. I hope there is enough information to give me an advice, thanks in advance. :) EDIT: Here is what the browser posted in "chrome://gpu-internals/": Graphics Feature Status Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable Compositing: Hardware accelerated 3D CSS: Hardware accelerated CSS Animation: Software animated. • Get into the router setting without knowing the password [on hold]

  So my father has changed the router passwords, and programed the router to turn my wifi connection off automaticly at some times, for example at night. I wanted to know if there is any way I can trick this feature? Can i change my ip in some way, the router won't recognize my ip, so my new ip would have internet connection? Is it any way i can get into the router settings and turn that feature off without knowing the router password? Would be happy if I could get replies as soon as possible!

• Cannot login to fresh Kubuntu installation as admin, but only as guest

  I just installed a fresh Kubuntu 12.10 on a machine beside Windows 7. After successful installation, I rebooted and wanted to login. But when I type my password and hit Enter, some command line screen shows up for the split of a second and then it thows me back to the login screen without any error message. It's hard to spot what the command line text says, but I couldn't see any error or something like that. Anyway, when I log in as guest (without password), everything works finely. Also, when going to a system command line (using Ctrl+Alt+F1), I can login with my account without any problems. Does anyone have a clue what is going on and how to fix it?

• Resized NTFS partition, now it wont mount.

  I have had a 1.5TB drive used as an external for 6 months or so, then I decided to put it in my linux server for network storage. ntfs was being crazy inefficient so I wanted to change the filesystem to ext4. I used the ntfsresize command to reduce the partition to 650GB and that took abour 2 hours, then I deleted all of the entries in fstab like a guide told me too and created a new one the size of the ntfs partition, or, 650GB. after I modified fstab the ntfs partition would no longer mount and when plugging it in to windows it says "This Hard Drive needs to be formatted". any ideas on how I can recover the data off of the drive? I have 600GB of free space on a different drive so I just need some way of copying them off.

• Mouse Error Code 24. Windows 7

  I've had the same mouse for a while, and it's been working fine until one day, it started giving me a message about a device not working properly. I tried updating the drivers, and re-installing, I even deleted old drivers in case my computer should be a little confused. It never made a difference, and my mouse seemed to be working just fine despite getting the permanent error in my device manager, I looked it up several times online, but I never found anything I could actually use, when I go to official websites, I always get the same response "plug in so so into a different place - drivers - install silverlight before you can watch this tutorial, try it on a different machine". so I gave up on that. But now is where I have a real problem, lately, my little strange error evolved into a fullblown Error 24, and my mouse is starting to turn on and off randomely, especially when it is being used, but I do hear it go "badum..dadum" when I'm off doing something else. when I looked up error code 24, I really didn't find much other than it meaning: Code 24 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24) Cause The device is installed incorrectly. The problem could be a hardware failure, or a new driver might be needed. Devices stay in this state if they have been prepared for removal. After you remove the device, this error disappears. But, I have tried uninstalling the device entirely several times, and it'll go right back to its previous state with error 24, and turning on and off randomely. what do I do? I cannot afford taking it to a repair place, I can't really afford a new mouse either, I refuse to buy cheap ones as I am a gamer, in need of more than 3 buttons, and a good grip is important. Could there possibly be some confusion in the registry? I do remember having gotten some early problems after I converted my vista to windows7. But I hardly dare going in there unless I'm 100% certain of what I'm going for, and I can honestly say I am at a loss here. Edit: it is a USB mouse we're talking about here. What the team is doing with Bing not as a search engine but as a developer API is very impressive! I’m going to be diving into this over the rest of Build so watch more blog posts coming on it. • Prevent Windows 7 from unpluging External HDD [migrated]

  I have installed Windows 7 as my media server. I pluged in 500GB external HDD via USB. I have changed power plan to Best Performance and changed advenced power settings to never turn off HDD etc. I even yesterday wrote powershell script (create and delete folder on this disk) and I have added it to harmonogram to run every 5 minutes starting from system boot. And nothing! Disk after some time (I realy can't say when) is turning off and Windows show "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. Then only system reboot or disk reboot helps. Any ideas how to prevent Windows 7 from stopping my external HDD? Cheers!

• formating a hard drive for use in an asus aspire one d250

  I have an Asus Aspire One D250 that's out of warranty and whose hard drive is giving the click of death. I'm trying to use a spare SATA HDD I have but am having some difficulty. I have a USB CD drive that I plugged into the computer but when I tried to boot off of a Windows XP SP3 install CD the hard drive wasn't recognized. I tried to format the hard drive in another computer and then plug the hard drive into the Asus Aspire and although this gets me to the Windows XP loading screen it crashes before it gets into Windows, itself. Even in Safe Mode. I also tried to install Windows XP off of a USB stick but it seemed to hang during the install process. As in the next day it was still in the blue screen installer. Any ideas?
