• How do I make all the finders on the model ignorecase?

  I have a model with several attributes, among them title and artist. The case of title and artist should be ignored in all the Active Record finders. Basically, if title or artist are present in the :conditions (or dynamically i.e. find_all_by_artist), then the WHERE artist = :artist should become WHERE UPPER(artist) = UPPER(:artist) or something along these lines. Is there a way of doing it with Rails?

  Hi, Is it possible to hold an open TCP connection with a client, while the IP address of the client is externally changed? For example, the connection is establishes against address X, but somewhen while the connection is open, the client-side user asks for IP renew and gets another IP address.   Hi, I run this snippet twice, in the ubuntu terminal, (encoding set to utf-8) once with ./test.py and then with ./test.py >out.txt: uni = u"\u001A\u0BC3\u1451\U0001D10C" print uni Without redirection it prints garbage. With redirection I get a UnicodeDecodeError. Can someone explain why I get the error only in the second case, or even better give a detailed explanation of what's going on behind the curtain in both cases?

  In Silverlight with RIA services it is very easy to implement simple data filtering with 'FilterDescriptor' instances. However I've got a case where I have several filters and I want to enable or disable them based on other filters. It seems like a simple 'Enabled' property would make this really easy - but there is none. Is there a way to achieve this without just manually defining all the filters I need every time the relevant checkbox is checked.

• Additional concerns when compiling for x64

  I know that the additional consideratiosn when compiling for x64 is that some data types, like ints, can hold larger values. Are there any concerns? VS2010, released a few days ago, can support compiling for x64 and x32, just like VS2008. The app is x32/86 only. I keep thinking that the app needs to be 64 bit however. What am I missing? Obviously this is not the case. Thanks

  Looking at some code examples for HtmlHelpers, and I see declarations that look like: public static string HelperName(this HtmlHelper htmlHelper, ...more regular params ) I can't remember seeing this type of construct any where else - can someone explain the purpose of the "this"? I thought that by declaring something public static meant that the class did not need to be instantiated - so what is "this" in this case?

• Why Windows Live Spaces Fetch Image Through HTTPS?

  I happens to find that, when a live space page is loaded, inline images are fetched by https protocol instead of http protocol. This doesn't make sense. The text part of live space is not fetched by https, why images are fetched with https? I bet the https way to fetch image just make the page loaded slower. Is there any special advantage to choose https over http in this case?

  I found out this morning that proc.new works in a class initialize method, but not lambda.
