  So I have a situation where I need to make binary patches and then be able to apply them from within python. I found bsdiff which looks like a great algorithm and has a python extension module, but that extension module doesn't have a windows installer past Python 2.5 Alright, so having never even written C seriously, let alone attempted a python extension module, I set out to compile it myself. After a few hours of bashing my head against a DLL load error with MinGW32, I managed to get it compiled and built using the setup.py provided in the source of the project. However, upon importing the resulting bsdiff module, I get: ImportError: DLL load failed: %1 is not a valid Win32 application. Any advice?

• How can I keep persistent cookies from certain domains only?

  This question is similar this one which covers Firefox, but I want to know how to do it in Chrome: I want Chrome to clear cookies from all sites accept those from certain domains. In the Cookies section of the *Content Settings I've made following selections: (*) Allow local data to be set (recommended) ( ) Allow local data to be set for the current session only ( ) Block sites from setting any data [ ] Block third-party cookies and site data [x] Clear cookies and other sites and plug-in data when I close my browser After logged in to my preferred website(s), I find the required domains listed when I click at All cookies and site data. Let's say, I find some cookies for mysite.comand www.mysite.com. Now I click at Manage exceptions and enter these items: Hostname Pattern Behavior ------------------------------------------- mysite.com Allow www.mysite.com Allow Unfortunately, this does not seem to work, because when I close Chrome and reopen it, all cookies are gone, even those from the configured mysite.com hosts.

  using regedit.exe I have manually created a key in registry called HKEY_CURRENT_USER/00_Just_a_Test_Key and created two dword values dword_test_1 and dword_test_2 I am trying to write some values into those two keys using following program import _winreg aReg = _winreg.ConnectRegistry(None,_winreg.HKEY_CURRENT_USER) aKey = _winreg.OpenKey(aReg, r"00_Just_a_Test_Key", 0, _winreg.KEY_WRITE) _winreg.SetValueEx(aKey,"dword_test_1",0, _winreg.REG_DWORD, 0x0edcba98) _winreg.SetValueEx(aKey,"dword_test_2",0, _winreg.REG_DWORD, 0xfedcba98) _winreg.CloseKey(aKey) _winreg.CloseKey(aReg) I can write into the first key, dword_test_1, but when I attempt to write into the second, I get following message Traceback (most recent call last): File "D:/src/registry/question.py", line 7, in <module> _winreg.SetValueEx(aKey,"dword_test_2",0, _winreg.REG_DWORD, 0xfedcba98) ValueError: Could not convert the data to the specified type. • Distributing a Python library (single file)

  Hello. For my project I would be using the argparse library. My question is, how do I distribute it with my project. I am asking this because of the technicalities and legalities involved. Do I just: Put the argparse.py file along with my project. That is, in the tar file for my project. Create a package for it for my distro? Tell the user to install it himself? Sorry for being such a noob, but I new to all this.

• HyperV management through Windows 8

  Consider the following setup: 1 Hypervisor 3 Clients (Server 2012 with AD, Server 2012, Windows 8). Now we can remote desktop into the Hypervisor and manage the VMs with the manager. This also works from the Server 2012 (I installed the manager there). But it doesn't work from the Windows 8 machine. All machines are in the same domain. Am I forgetting something? I followed this long page http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794756(v=ws.10).aspx But I find it so weird that it works for the same user on Windows Server 2012, but not on Windows 8.

• Methods of sending web-generated config files to servers and restarting services.

  Hi, We're writing a web-based tool to configure our services provided by multiple servers. This includes interfaces configuration, dhcp configs etc. etc. Having configs in database and views that generate proper output, how to send it/make it available for servers? I'm thinking about sending it through scp and invoking reload command to services through ssh. I'm also thinking about using Func to do all the job, as this is Python tool and will seemingly integrate with python-based (django) config tool. Any other proposals?

• Get "2:35pm" instead of "02:35PM" from Python date/time?

  I'm still a bit slow with Python, so I haven't got this figured out beyond what's obviously in the docs, etc. I've worked with Django a bit, where they've added some datetime formatting options via template tags, but in regular python code how can I get the 12-hour hour without a leading zero? Is there a straightforward way to do this? I'm looking at the 2.5 and 2.6 docs for "strftime()" and there doesn't seem to be a formatting option there for this case. Should I be using something else? Feel free to include any other time-formatting tips that aren't obvious from the docs. =)

• Alternative to cPanel (For Email, ect)

  I'm currently setting up a VPS for the first time. Standard that I've ever worked with before on shared hosting was cPanel, but as the majority of my work I plan on doing from now on will be using NodeJS and Python/Flask, I'd like to avoid needing to install Apache/MySQL/PHP. What would be my best bet to help manage a mail server other than cPanel? Or even other specific server settings that may come in handy later? Plan on using Ubuntu if that counts for anything.

• SAN for Medium Business - Where to start? [closed]

  I've always run Linux on my home computers, and done PC repair for years, but this is my first experience with needing to buy a SAN. I thought I was knowledgeable, but I feel a bit lost. I need to be able to support 25 VMs, which are currently managed through vSphere. The company I'm at is growing quickly though, so I'd like to plan for the future. Ideally, I want a solution that I can just tack arrays onto and manage as one large, iSCSI drive. Suggestions? Good resources? If I can find something that appears to software as one large drive, am I better off going with a solution like FreeNAS or Starwind, or an all-in-one proprietary solution like NetApp? Cost, is (of course, and always I'm sure) an issue.

• Setup SSH key per user for Git access

  I'm setting up a site that will have multiple development instances running on the same server. Essentially, we'd have dev-a.whatever.com, dev-b.whatever.com, etc.. all running off a single server. I want to give each user some bit of SSH access in order to update and check in code from our Git repository and to manage files via SFTP. However, I want to restrict each user to their own site as well. So if you have access to dev-a.whatever.com, you don't also have access to dev-b.whatever.com and so on. The restriction is already in place if I login via FTP as a certain user, I can't navigate outside my own site -- but if I grant SSH access to that account I can immediately navigate to any file on the server in SFTP. Is RSSH part of the solution? And how can I assign the correct SSH pub key to the corresponding user? We're using BeanStalk for our Git repository management if that makes any impact.

• How do I set up a mailing list for over 2000 people?

  I manage IT for a large organization with over 2000 people. The administration would like to send an email (often with up to 5 word document attachments) about once per week. They also want to categorize people. For instance, about 40 people are "teachers," about 1800 people are "students," and about 10 people are "board members." They may send an email to any combination of these categories. Here's what I have tried: I bought a server, installed Ubuntu server edition on it, and wrote a python script to send out their emails. However, pretty soon, mail services such as Gmail and Yahoo began to treat the mail I send out as SPAM. I'm guessing this is because I am sending an email with 2000+ people in the "bcc" field. Maintaining this server also takes a lot of time. How do I set up a mailing list for over 2000 people? Must I defer to paid services?

• SVN - managing .htaccess file on various instances

  I have a question and need a suggestion. We have to manage .htaccess file on three different instances - dev, qa and prod. Currently we have tortoise configured for scm. The issue we are facing is that .htaccess for dev & qa is different from the prod. At present, we have to manually merge differences from dev .htaccess to prod .htaccess. Is there any alternative way of managing this file without this manual process since it is error prone. Any suggestions in this regard will be highly appreciated

• String formatting [str.format()] with a dictionary having a key which is a str() of a number

  Python neophyte here. I was wondering if someone could help with the KeyError I am getting when using a dictionary for string interpolation in str.format. dictionary = {'key1': 'val1', '1': 'val2'} string1 = 'Interpolating {0[key1]}'.format(dictionary) print string1 The above works fine and yields: Interpolating val1 However doing the following: dictionary = {'key1': 'val1', '1': 'val2'} string2 = 'Interpolating {0[1]}'.format(dictionary) print string2 results in: Traceback (most recent call last): File "test.py", line 3, in <module> string2 = 'Interpolating {0[1]}'.format(dictionary) KeyError: 1L So the problem seems to be in the interpretation of the numeric key as a list index, IMHO. Is there any way to work around this? (i.e. convey that this is instead a dictionary key) TIA and apologies if this question has been asked before(couldn't find anything relevant with my search-fu).

• discrepancy in google analytics pageview totals when tracking subdomains

  We are using the old urchin.js and are tracking 2 subdomains under the same profile. We have a “track subdomains” advanced filter defined (as per http://www.google.com/support/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55524) as well as 2 segments for presenting data in the reports: hostname matches exactly subdomain1.domain-name.com and hostname matches exactly subdomain2.domain-name.com When I apply these segments to our Top Content Overview report, the All Visits total for PageViews does not correspond to the # of visits reported for each subdomain. For example: All Visits = 53 subdomain1 = 24 subdomain2 = 32 Is there any reason as to why we would be seeing this discrepancy in numbers?

• SCCM? Overkill?

  T. technician in a high school with around 1600 students 250 staff and 800+ client computers mostly running W7 I'm looking for a better way to manage clients (deploy software, track changes, inventory etc) I like the look of SCCM 2012 features but the case studies seem to be aimed at large multi-site infrastructural rather than a single mid sized site. Is SCCM suitable for a mid sized single site or is it aimed at much larger corporations, if so what would be more suitable Just a note about me and my situation. I work as a technician in a school part of a team of 3. My boss seems content with a network that works (just about) not a productive well maintained network that is easy to run and maintain. I'm still fairly early on in my I.T. career so sorry if I'm not up to speed on all products. EDIT: Thanks for all the help I'll take a look at SCE and SCCM and get some proposals drawn up to take to my boss/deputy head

• How do I use udev to find info about inserted video media (e.g. DVDs)

  I'm trying to port an application from using HAL to using pure udev. It is written in python and will use the gudev library, though I would love to see examples in any language. I'm able to get all attached video devices (such as cameras) via: import gudev client = gudev.Client(["video4linux"]) for device in client.get_devices(): print device.get_sysfs_attr("name"), device.get_device_name() This prints out something like: USB2.0 UVC WebCam /dev/video0 I am also able to get a list of block devices, but how can I: Tell if it is a CD/DVD drive? Tell if media is currently inserted if the drive supports removable media? Tell what the name/label of the media is (e.g. FUTURAMAS1 for a DVD)? • Joining windows LANs through SSH tunnel

  I have at home a computer (a windows 7 ult machine) I need to use to manage stuff at the office which hosts windows and linux servers. I am able to set up a SSH tunnel (atleast for firefox proxying) and I'd like to be able to access shared windows network drives on the other end too. I heard something about needing some kind of samba service but I couldn't find anything useful by googling that. What do I need in order to make an SSH tunnel to the office (a NAS, running linux) so that I can access windows server 2008 and windows 7 network drives? Bonus: I'd like to be able to access a MSSQL database server too if it's possible.

• How to make shell output redirect (>) write while script is still running?

  I wrote a short script that never terminates. This script continuously generates output that I have to check on every now and then. I'm running it on a lab computer through SSH, and redirecting the output to a file in my public_html folder on that machine. python script.py > ~/public_html/results.txt However, the results don't show up immediately when I refresh the address. The results show up when I terminate the program, but as I said, it doesn't halt by itself. Is that redirect (>) being lazy with with writing? Is there a way to continuously (or with an interval) update the results in the file? Or is it the webserver that doesn't update the file while it is still being written?

  Dear Everyone, I am currently using mysqldb. What is the correct way to escape strings in mysqldb arguments? Note that E = lambda x: x.encode('utf-8') 1) so my connection is set with charset='utf8'. I personally know that %s is not a good method to pass in arguemnts due to injection attacks etc.

  I have a large site of mostly static content, and I have entertained migrating to Google App Engine. I am wondering, not so much if it is possible as whether that is cutting a steak with a screwdriver. I see a way to do it in Django that has a bad design smell. Does migrating a literature site that is largely static HTML from Apache to Google App Engine make sense? I'm not specifically asking for a comparison to Nginx or Cherokee; I am interested in whether migrating from a traditional web hosting solution to a more cloudy type of solution recommends itself.   Do you find yourself always scrolling and scrolling and scrolling to get to the column you want to see when looking at a table or view’s data? Don’t do that! Instead, just right-click on the column headers, select ‘Columns’, and reorder as desired. Access the Manage Columns dialog Then move up the columns you want to see first… Put them in the order you want – it won’t affect the database. Now I see the data I want to see, when I want to see it – no scrolling. This will only change how the data is displayed for you, and SQL Developer will remember this ordering until you ‘Delete Persisted Settings…’ What IS Remembered Via These ‘Persisted Settings?’ Column Widths Column Sorts Column Positions Find/Highlights This means if you manipulate one of these settings, SQL Developer will remember them the next time you open the tool and go to that table or view. Don’t know what I mean by ‘Find/Highlight?’ Find and highlight values in a grid with Ctrl+F
