• No module named sqlalchemy when installing ckanext-viewhelpers

  I'm using CKAN as my open data portal and am trying to install the ckanext-viewhelpers Extension by following the instructions at https://github.com/ckan/ckanext-viewhelpers. • JavaOne Russia: Great Line Up

  I'm (we're) in New York, a week of vacation. (Growing list of photos can be found here.) A week in Brooklyn, and around, flea markets, book stores, museums, music. One of several highlights will be seeing "Death of a Salesman" with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the main role, tomorrow. However, mentally, at least partly, I'm in Moscow, at JavaOne Moscow, 17 & 18 April. http://www.oracle.com/javaone/ru-en/index.html I'm doing two items there, thankfully on the first day, I always think the sooner the better: Tuesday 12:30 - 13:15 -- Unlocking the Java EE 6 Platform (in the Keynote Hall) Tuesday 16:30 - 18:15 -- Rapid Corporate Desktop Development (in HOL Room) Several speakers I'm looking forward to seeing there include Bert Ertman who will be talking about Spring/Java EE 6 migration, Dalibor Topic talking about Lambda expressions in JDK 8, Arun Gupta with his Java EE 6 HOL (appears to be a partial overlap with my session), and various others. And I hope I will make it to Angela Caicedo's HOL on JavaFX. The whole program, which is available via the link above, indicates that many (dare I say "most"?) of the sessions will be using NetBeans in one way or another. Looks like it will be a great conference.

• How to trace a function array argument in DTrace

  I still use dtrace just about every day in my job and found that I had to print an argument to a function which was an array of strings.  The array was variable length up to about 10 items.  I'm not sure if the is the right way to do it, but it seems to work and is not too painful if the array size is small.Here's an example.  Suppose in your application, you have the following function, where n is number of item in the array s.void arraytest(int n, char **s){    /* Loop thru s[0] to s[n-1] */}How do you use DTrace to print out the values of s[i] or of s[0] to s[n-1]?  DTrace does not have if-then blocks or for loops, so you can't do something like:    for i=0; i<arg0; i++        trace arg1[i]; It turns out that you can use probe ordering as a kind of iterator. Probes with the same name will fire in the order that they appear in the script, so I can save the value of "n" in the first probe and then use it as part of the predicate of the next probe to determine if the other probe should fire or not.  So the first probe for tracing the arraytest function is:pid$target::arraytest:entry{    self->n = arg0;}Then, if I want to print out the first few items of the array, I first check the value of n.  If it's greater than the index that I want to print out, then I can print that index.  For example, if I want to print out the 3rd element of the array, I would do something like:pid$target::arraytest:entry/self->n > 2/{    printf("%s",stringof(arg1 + 2 * sizeof(pointer)));}Actually, that doesn't quite work because arg1 is a pointer to an array of pointers and needs to be copied twice from the user process space to the kernel space (which is where dtrace is). Also, the sizeof(char *) is 8, but for some reason, I have to use 4 which is the sizeof(uint32_t). • Live HTML Preview

  When you need to edit an HTML document in NetBeans you may find useful this little plugin that adds a Preview tab to HTML editor window. The plugin works with some small issues in NetBeans 7.4 but I recommend using development builds instead. So install the plugin, restart NetBeans and open any HTML document. Notice there's a Preview button in editor's toolbar (see the red rectangle in the picture below). Now split the editor window by dragging the split button at top right corner. You can also use menu View - Split - Vertically.  Then in the bottom split part toggle Preview button. You will get a live preview of your HTML source code. The preview pane will auto-refresh as you edit the HTML code. There are even some handy tools in Preview toolbar, for example you can resize the preview browser to match the screen dimensions of various device types. I know there is full-blown HTML5 support in NetBeans 7.4. But if you need to edit a single document or when you're running Java-only NetBeans distribution this plugin may come handy... Note: The plugin is built on top of embedded WebKit browser which is based on JavaFX WebView component. So there might be some issue when using the plugin on some flavors of Linux.

• Cannot login to Ubuntu 14.04 returns to the login screen

• Removing the XML Formatter from ASP.NET Web API Applications

  ASP.NET Web API's default output format is supposed to be JSON, but when I access my Web APIs using the browser address bar I'm always seeing an XML result instead. When working on AJAX application I like to test many of my AJAX APIs with the browser while working on them. While I can't debug all requests this way, GET requests are easy to test in the browser especially if you have JSON viewing options set up in your various browsers. If I preview a Web API request in most browsers I get an XML response like this: Why is that? Web API checks the HTTP Accept headers of a request to determine what type of output it should return by looking for content typed that it has formatters registered for. This automatic negotiation is one of the great features of Web API because it makes it easy and transparent to request different kinds of output from the server. In the case of browsers it turns out that most send Accept headers that look like this (Chrome in this case): Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Web API inspects the entire list of headers from left to right (plus the quality/priority flag q=) and tries to find a media type that matches its list of supported media types in the list of formatters registered. In this case it matches application/xml to the Xml formatter and so that's what gets returned and displayed. To verify that Web API indeed defaults to JSON output by default you can open the request in Fiddler and pop it into the Request Composer, remove the application/xml header and see that the output returned comes back in JSON instead. An accept header like this: Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,*/*;q=0.9 or leaving the Accept header out altogether should give you a JSON response. Interestingly enough Internet Explorer 9 also displays JSON because it doesn't include an application/xml Accept header: Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml, */* which for once actually seems more sensible. Removing the XML Formatter We can't easily change the browser Accept headers (actually you can by delving into the config but it's a bit of a hassle), so can we change the behavior on the server? When working on AJAX applications I tend to not be interested in XML results and I always want to see JSON results at least during development. Web API uses a collection of formatters and you can go through this list and remove the ones you don't want to use - in this case the XmlMediaTypeFormatter. You can also look for the specific formatter (XmlMediatTypeFormatter) by its type name which is simpler, but it's better to search for the supported types as this will work even if there are other custom formatters added. Once removed, now the browser request results in a JSON response: It's a simple solution to a small debugging task that's made my life easier. • Start Learning Ruby with IronRuby – Setting up the Environment

  Recently I have decided to learn Ruby and for last few days I am playing with IronRuby. Learning a new thing is always been a fun and when it comes to adorable language like Ruby it becomes more entertaining. Like any other language, first we have to create the development environment. In order to run IronRuby we have to download the binaries form the IronRuby CodePlex project. IronRuby supports both .NET 2.0 and .NET 4, but .NET 4 is the recommended version, you can download either the installation or the zip file. If you download the zip file make sure you added the bin directory in the environment path variable. Once you are done, open up the command prompt and type : ir –v It should print message like: IronRuby 1.0.0.0 on .NET 4.0.30319.1 The ir is 32bit version of IronRuby, if you want to use 64bit you can try ir64. Next, we have to find a editor where we can write our Ruby code as there is currently no integration story of IronRuby with Visual Studio like its twin Iron Python. Among the free IDEs only SharpDevelop has the IronRuby support but it does not have auto complete or debugging built into it, only thing that it supports is the syntax highlighting, so using a text editor which has the same features is nothing different comparing to it. To play with the IronRuby we will be using Notepad++, which can be downloaded from its sourceforge download page. The Notepad++ does have a nice syntax highlighting support : I am using the Vibrant Ink with some little modification. The next thing we have to do is configure the Notepad++ that we can run the Ruby script in IronRuby inside the Notepad++. Lets create a batch(.bat) file in the IronRuby bin directory, which will have the following content: @echo off  cls call ir %1 pause This will make sure that the console will be paused once we run the script. Now click Run->Run in the Notepad++, it will bring up the run dialog and put the following command in the textbox: riir.bat "$(FULL_CURRENT_PATH)" Click the save which will bring another dialog. Type Iron Ruby and assign the shortcut to ctrl + f5 (Same as Visual Studio Start without Debugging) and click ok. Once you are done you will find the IronRuby in the Run menu. Now press ctrl + f5, we will find the ruby script running in the IronRuby. Now there are one last thing that we would like to add which is poor man’s context sensitive help. First, download the ruby language help file from the Ruby Installer site and extract into a directory. Next we will have to install the Language Help Plug-in of Notepad++, click Plugins->Plugin Manger –>Show Plugin Manager and scroll down until you find the plug-in the list, now check the plug-in and click install. Once it is installed it will prompt you to restart the Notepad++, click yes. When the Notepad++ restarts, click the Plugins –> Language Help –> Options –> add and enter the following details and click ok: The chm file location can be different depending upon where you extracted it. Now when you put your in any of ruby keyword and press ctrl + f1 it will take you to the help topic of that keyword. During SQL Server Trainings, I am usually asked if there is any way one can know how much data in a table is stored in the memory cache? The more detailed question I usually get is if there are multiple indexes on table (and used in a query), were the data of the single table stored multiple times in the memory cache or only for a single time? Here is a query you can run to figure out what kind of data is stored in the cache. • Amazon Product Advertising API SOAP Namespace Changes

  About two months ago (twowards the end of February 2012 I think) Amazon decided to change the namespace of the Product Advertising API. The error that would come up was: <ItemSearchResponse > was not expected. If you've used the Amazon Product Advertising API you probably know that Amazon has made it a habit to break the services every few years or so and I guess last month was about the time for another one. Basically the service namespace of the document has been changed and responses from the service just failed outright even though the rest of the schema looks fine. Now I looked around for a while trying to find a recent update to the Product Advertising API - something semi-official looking but everything is dated around 2009. Really??? And it's not just .NET - the newest thing on the sample/APIs is dated early 2011 and a handful of 2010 samples. There are newer full APIs for the 'cloud' offerings, but the Product Advertising API apparently isn't part of that. After searching for quite a bit trying to trace this down myself and trying some of the newer samples (which also failed) I found an obscure forum post that describes the solution of getting past the namespace issue. FWIW, I've been using an old version of the Product Advertising API using the old Microsoft WSE3 services (pre-WCF), which provides some of the WS* security features required by the Amazon service. The fix for this code is to explicitly override the namespace declaration on each of the imported service method signatures. Amazon Services <rant> FWIW, I've not been impressed by Amazon's service offerings. While the services work well, their documentation and tool support is absolutely horrendous. I was recently working with a customer on an old AWS application and their old API had been completely removed with a new API that wasn't even a close match. One old API call resulted in requiring three different APIs to perform the same functionality. We had to re-write the entire piece from scratch essentially. The documentation was downright wrong, and incomplete and so scattered it was next to impossible to follow. The examples weren't examples at all - they're mockups of real service calls with fake data that didn't even provide everything that was required to make same service calls work. Additionally there appears to be just about no public support from Amazon, only peer support which is sparse at best - and getting a hold of somebody at Amazon, even for pay seems to be mythical task. It's a terrible business model they have going. I can't see why anybody would put themselves through this sort of customer and development experience. Sad really, but an experience we see more and more these days. • Getting a 'base' Domain from a Domain

  Here's a simple one: How do you reliably get the base domain from full domain name or URI? Specifically I've run into this scenario in a few recent applications when creating the Forms Auth Cookie in my ASP.NET applications where I explicitly need to force the domain name to the common base domain. So, www.west-wind.com, store.west-wind.com, west-wind.com, dev.west-wind.com all should return west-wind.com. The second Uri helper is an Extension method to the Uri class, which is what's used the in the first code sample. This is the preferred way to call this since the URI class can differentiate between Dns names and IP Addresses. If you use the first string based version there's a little more guessing going on if a URL is an IP Address. There are a couple of small twists in dealing with 'domain names'. When passing a string only there's a possibility to not actually pass domain name, but end up passing an IP address, so the code explicitly checks for three domain segments (can there be more than 3?). IP4 Addresses have 4 and IP6 have none so they'll fall through. Then there are things like localhost or a NetBios machine name which also come back on URL strings, but also shouldn't be handled. • Odd MVC 4 Beta Razor Designer Issue

  This post is a small cry for help along with an explanation of a problem that is hard to describe on twitter or even a connect bug and written in hopes somebody has seen this before and any ideas on what might cause this. Lots of helpful people had comments on Twitter for me, but they all assumed that the code doesn't run, which is not the case - it's a designer issue. A few days ago I started getting some odd problems in my MVC 4 designer for an app I've been working on for the past 2 weeks. Basically the MVC 4 Razor designer keeps popping me errors, about the call signature to various Html Helper methods being incorrect. It also complains about the ViewBag object and not supporting dynamic requesting to load assemblies into the project. Here's what the designer errors look like: You can see the red error underlines under the ViewBag and an Html Helper I plopped in at the top to demonstrate the behavior. Basically any HtmlHelper I'm accessing is showing the same errors. Note that the code *runs just fine* - it's just the designer that is complaining with Errors. What's odd about this is that *I think* this started only a few days ago and nothing consequential that I can think of has happened to the project or overall installations. These errors aren't critical since the code runs but pretty annoying especially if you're building and have .csHtml files open in Visual Studio mixing these fake errors with real compiler errors. What I've checked Looking at the errors it indeed looks like certain references are missing. I can't make sense of the Html Helpers error, but certainly the ViewBag dynamic error looks like System.Core or Microsoft.CSharp assemblies are missing. Rest assured they are there and the code DOES run just fine at runtime. This is a designer issue only. I went ahead and checked the namespaces that MVC has access to in Razor which lives in the Views folder's web.config file: /Views/web.config For good measure I added <system.web.webPages.razor> <host factoryType="System.Web.Mvc.MvcWebRazorHostFactory, System.Web.Mvc, <split for layout> Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> <pages pageBaseType="System.Web.Mvc.WebViewPage"> <namespaces> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc.Ajax" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc.Html" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Routing" /> <add namespace="System.Linq" /> <add namespace="System.Linq.Expressions" /> <add namespace="ClassifiedsBusiness" /> <add namespace="ClassifiedsWeb"/> <add namespace="Westwind.Utilities" /> <add namespace="Westwind.Web" /> <add namespace="Westwind.Web.Mvc" /> </namespaces> </pages> </system.web.webPages.razor> For good measure I added System.Linq and System.Linq.Expression on which some of the Html.xxxxFor() methods rely, but no luck. • Part 15: Fail a build based on the exit code of a console application

You would expect that the build would see this and report an error. This is not true however. First we setup the scenario. Add a ConsoleApplication project to your solution you are building. In the Main function set the ExitCode to 1     class Program    {        static void Main(string[] args)        {            Console.WriteLine("This is an error in the script.");            Environment.ExitCode = 1;        }    } Checkin the code. You can choose to include this Console Application in the build or you can decide to add the exe to source control Now modify the Build Process Template CustomTemplate.xaml Add an argument ErrornousScript Scroll down beneath the TryCatch activity called “Try Compile, Test, and Associate Changesets and Work Items” Add an Sequence activity to the template In the Sequence, add a ConvertWorkspaceItem and an InvokeProcess activity (see Part 14: Execute a PowerShell script  for more detailed steps) In the FileName property of the InvokeProcess use the ErrornousScript so the ConsoleApplication will be called. Modify the build definition and make sure that the ErrornousScript is executing the exe that is setting the ExitCode to 1. You have now setup a build definition that will execute the errornous Console Application. When you run it, you will see that the build succeeds. This is not what you want! To solve this, you can make use of the Result property on the InvokeProcess activity. So lets change our Build Process Template. Add the new variables (scoped to the sequence where you run the Console Application) called ExitCode (type = Int32) and ErrorMessage Click on the InvokeProcess activity and change the Result property to ExitCode In the Handle Standard Output of the InvokeProcess add a Sequence activity In the Sequence activity, add an Assign primitive. Set the following properties: To = ErrorMessage Value = If(Not String.IsNullOrEmpty(ErrorMessage), Environment.NewLine + ErrorMessage, "") + stdOutput And add the default BuildMessage to the sequence that outputs the stdOutput Add beneath the InvokeProcess activity and If activity with the condition ExitCode <> 0 In the Then section add a Throw activity and set the Exception property to New Exception(ErrorMessage) The complete workflow looks now like When you now check in the Build Process Template and run the build, you get the following result And that is exactly what we want.   You can download the full solution at BuildProcess.zip. In real life, we are willing to pay a price for performance –i.e. to have information at our fingertips. We have run into customers opting to store a document folder path as a document metadata field. They have their reasons, half of the ECM community will agree with them, and the other half would raise an eye brow. In the end, they are getting creative to achieve their document management goals. The below steps outlines how to create a Global Rule that would store a document’s folder path in a custom metadata field: Create a Global Rule via Configuration Manager > Rules Tab > Add Then check “Is global rule with priority”. Then check “Use rule activation condition”.   Some exciting new Windows Azure Mobile Services features were delivered to production this week. The highlights include: iPhone and iPad connectivity support via a new iOS SDK Integrated Authentication so developers can configure user authentication via Microsoft Account, Facebook, Twitter, and Google. New server-side Mobile Service script modules Access to Structured Storage, Windows Azure Blob, Table, Queues, and ServiceBus Email services through partnership with SendGrid SMS & voice services through partnership with Twilio Mobile Services hosting expanded to west coast US The iOS SDK I’m excited to share that we've announced the release of an under-development iOS client SDK for Windows Azure Mobile Services. The iOS SDK joins the Windows 8 SDK launched with Windows Azure Mobile Services as well as client SDKs released by Xamarin for MonoTouch and MonoDroid.  The native iOS SDK is for developers programming in Objective-C on the iPhone and iPad platforms. The SDK gives developers the same level of access to data storage using dynamic schematization that is available for Windows 8. Also, iOS applications can use the same authentication options available in Mobile Services. While full iOS support is still in development, the libraries are currently available on GitHub. • How to inhibit suspend temporarily?

  I have searched around a bit for this and can't seem to find anything helpful. I have my PC running Ubuntu 12.10 set up to suspend after 30 minutes of inactivity. I don't want to change that, it works great most of the time. What I do want to do is disable the automatic suspend if a particular application is running. How can I do this? The closest thing I've found so far is to add a shell script in /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d which checks if the application is running and returns 1 to indicate that suspend should be prevented. But it looks like the system then gives up on suspending automatically, instead of trying again after another 30 minutes. (As far as I can tell, if I move the mouse, that restarts the timer again.) It's quite likely the application will finish after a couple of hours, and I'd rather my PC then suspended automatically if I'm not using it at that point. (So I don't want to add a call to pm-suspend when the application finishes.) Is this possible? Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers. EDIT: As I noted in one of the comments below, what I actually wanted was to inhibit suspend when my PC was serving files over NFS; I just wanted to focus on the "suspend" part of the question because I already had an idea how to solve the NFS part. Using the 'xdotool' idea given in one of the answers, I have come up with the following script which I run from cron every few minutes. It's not ideal because it stops the screensaver kicking in as well, but it does work. I need to have a look at why 'caffeine' doesn't correctly re-enable suspend later on, then I could probably do better.
