• Calling Google's Custom Search API via Python

  I am writing in Python a module that will query Google's Custom Search API and return all listings of domain 'example.com' I Have been reading instructions at https://code.google.com/apis/customsearch/v1/getting_started.html and am a little stumped at the moment. Are my assumptions listed below correct? For example, to search for results that has 'example.com' in the URL, the query is: *'https://www.googleapis.com/customsearch/v1?key=my_key&cx=017576662512468239146:omuauf_lfve&q=site:example.com*' *key=my_key*: value of key given by google cx=017576662512468239146: name of the search engine (google)? *omuauf_lfve*: I have no idea what this is q=site:example.com: This should return all results with 'example.com'; e.g. www.a.example.com, b.example.com, example .com

• Can I learn the iPhone SDK and complete an app by September?

  Hi everyone, I'm wondering if it's realistically possible to learn the iPhone SDK and complete an app by the end of this summer. The app shouldn't be too difficult, it would just interact with my site's API and essentially just fetch, create, and edit resources. I already have a little experience with the SDK (and I'm comfortable with Objective-C), so I'm not completely new to it. Although here I things I don't know how to do and what I'd need to learn: Log in to my site using basic http authentication and store the user's username/password for all future requests Implement a toolbar at the bottom to navigate between different views Fetch and parse xml into list items Do POST/PUT requests to create/edit a resource on my server Are there any good resources available to learn how to do those tasks above? • Is JSONRequest a global Javascript object ?

  My goal is to asynchronously call a URL via POST request (REST Webservice) to increment a statistic on one of my object. I am a newby web developper and I discovered JSON yesterday. Since JSON seems a lot popular and handy I went to www.json.org and discovered a JSONRequest object which seems to able one to send POST/GET request asynchronously but I can't get it work. Is it a global Javascript object or do I need to add some files ? I am a little bit confused since I've found a Firefox plugin extension for JSONRequest but I don't understand its purpose.

• Would dropping X altogether hurt ?

  Hi, I live in the linux terminal all the time under my slackware GNU/linux system (an EeePC). By default, GNU Emacs won't start if It can't find several Xorg libraries. Assuming I will never use X software at all, would it make sense for me to drop all this Xorg stuff and compile emacs again ? Are you aware of anything that could get me into troubles or making GNU Emacs not working at all ? Are there any advantage for me to keep all these dependencies ? I am asking since as said, my main box is an eeepc with little storage and I am dangerously hitting the limits ;-) Regards

• SQL Query, return value from table with no join

  I'm hoping for an idea on the best way to approach what I'm trying to do. I have a table with a list of transactions. Each transactions has a PostDate in DateTime format. I have another table holding the fiscal period values. This table has the following columns; FiscalYear, FiscalMonth, StartDate, EndDate. I'm trying to write a query that will return all values from my transactions table, along with the FiscalYear and FiscalMonth of the PostDate. So I guess I'm just trying to return the FiscalYear and FiscalMonth values when the PostDate falls between the StartDate and EndDate. I've tried using a Subbuery, but I have little experience with them and kept returning an error message that the subquery was returning more than 1 value. • JSF 2 Content Controller (pull in content based on URI)

  Hey All, I'm new to JSF and am trying to make a content controller. Basically whenever someone makes a request to www.myapp.com/external/** I'd like to forward to a controller that pulls external content into a page template and spits it out to the user. I was able to achive this pretty easily in Spring 3, but I'm a little confused on where to start with JSF. I feel like I'd need to create a custom servlet to handle /external/**? But what would the class of this servlet be? What would it consist of? Any help is appreciated!

  I want to implement a Set in C. Is it OK to use a linked list, when creating the SET, or should I use another approach ? How do you usually implement your own set (if needed). NOTE: If I use the Linked List approach, I will probably have the following complexities for my operations: init : O(1); destroy: O(n); insert: O(n); remove: O(n); union: O(n*m); intersection: O(n*m); difference: O(n*m); ismember: O(n); issubset: O(n*m); setisequal: O(n*m); O(n*m) seems may be a little to big especially for huge data... Is there a way to implement my Set more efficient ?

• Scheduling a visual studio load test using powershell giving me BSOD

  I have a visual studio load test which I want to run every hour so that I can start to collect some data. To do this, I thought it would be best to make a little powershell script and put a command like this inside: Invoke-Expression -command "& '$env:VS100COMNTOOLS..\IDE\mstest.exe' /testcontainer:"C:\Users\benb\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\BBPerformanceTest\bin\Debug\HomePageOnly.loadtest"" That command works fine, but sometimes when its run I get a blue screen of death. However, when I run my load test through the visual studio GUI, I never get a BSOD. two questions: is it possible to avoid this BSOD? Is there another way I can schedule my load test? Thanks

• Good Notification Plugin For Jquery?

  Hi I am looking at pines notify(http://pines.sourceforge.net/pnotify/) and it looks good but it seems to have little actual documentation so I am wondering is there anything more established and worked on out there? Like I don't want to spend time trying to figure out how to use pines and then find out it is missing some feature that I needed a few months later that I needed to change to a different plugin. This happened to me with tablesorter 2.0 I was using it then I needed the filtering but theirs kinda sucked so I found datatables what had such a bigger api and developed more. So I am wondering if there is something like datatables(in terms of development and features) just for notifications instead.

  Hi all, I'm just starting to dabble in consuming a JSON webservice, and I am having a little trouble working out the best way to get to the actual data elements. I am receiving a response which has been converted into a ruby hash using the JSON.parse method. • UITableView animations for a "lazy" UI design?

  I have a UITableViewController that allows the user to perform editing tasks. Now, once a user has committed his change, the table view doesn't directly change the model and updates the table, rather "informs" the model what the user wants to do. The model in turn updates accordingly and then posts a notification that it has been changed. As far as I've seen, I need to begin/end updates on the tableview and in between change the model to its' final form. My changes though, are asynchronous and cannot guarantee to update the model before 'tableview endupdates' is called. Currently, each time I receive a 'model did change' notificaiton, I reload the entire table. So, how can I really make cell animations (delete/insert) work? Should the model fire a notification for each little change instead of the entire table?

• undo or reverse argsort(), python

  Given an array 'a' I would like to sort the array by columns "a.sort(axis=0)" do some stuff to the array and then undo the sort. By that I don't mean re sort but basically reversing how each element was moved. I assume argsort() is what I need but it is not clear to me how to sort an array with the results of argsort() or more importantly apply the reverse/inverse of argsort() Here is a little more detail I have an array a, shape(a) = rXc I need to sort each column aargsort = a.argsort(axis=0) # May use this later aSort = a.sort(axis=0) now average each row aSortRM = asort.mean(axis=1) now replace each col in a row with the row mean. is there a better way than this aWithMeans = ones_like(a) for ind in range(r) # r = number of rows aWithMeans[ind]* aSortRM[ind] Now I need to undo the sort I did in the first step. ????

• Emacs and Long Shell Commands

  Is there a way to run a shell command, have the output show up in a new buffer and have that output show up incrementally? Eshell and other emacs terminal emulators do a find job of this but I see no way to script them. What I'd like to do is write little elisp functions to do stuff like run unit tests, etc. and watch the output trickle into a buffer. The elisp function shell-command is close to what I want but it shows all the output at once when the process finishes.

• C++: use array of strings wrapped in namespace?

  I got the following code, wishing to wrap a group of strings nicely in a namespace: namespace msgs { const int arr_sz = 3; const char *msg[arr_sz] = {"blank", "blank", "blank" }; msg[0] = "Welcome, lets start by getting a little info from you!\n"; msg[1] = "Alright, bla bla bla.."; msg[2] = "etc."; } The code inside works nicely inside a function, but I don't know how to return an array from it. The namespace idea LOOKS fine, but it returns on the last three lines: error: expected constructor, destructor, or type conversion before ‘=’ token Why can't I define the array inside a namespace, do I need to do something first? It's nice because I can call it like printf(msgs::msg[1]) etc. I want to do this I just can't wrap my head around what's wrong :(

• Get data from Joomla jos_users table

  Hello, world! I'm trying to build a little bit advanced users system using Joomla, but I stuck at one spot. I added new field on Joomla's jos_users table, but when I wanted to get that field out, like "echo" - it didn't worked at all. Any other data, even password field I can get without problems. Of course, I added new value in /var/www/<project>/libraries/joomla/user/user.php like this after line 40. /** * The users address name * @var string */ var $address = null; What might be the problem here? • Using PHP to determine if a remote file has been replaced?

  I have a MySQL database with some URLs in it. One URL per row. Each URL has my script on it. What I am wanting to do, is check if the file is still there via a PHP script. Not check if it 404'd, but rather check if it has been modified or replaced. Is this possible? If so, how would it be accomplished? I was thinking making the remote file echo some string, and having the local file check the page for that string, but that seems a little inefficient and sloppy.

  I have a table (3x3) that counts "< /form" as space in IE. The code for 1 td looks like: <style type="text/css"> table { border-width: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; padding: 0px; } td, th { padding: 0px; } </style> <table><tr><td><form name="form" action="index.php" method="post"><input type="hidden" name="from" value="a" /><input type="image" src="pic1.gif" alt="1" name="submit" value="submit" /></form></td> There is no spaces anywhere outside the tags. Inside the td, there is a form, with a hidden field and a picture. Firefox shows only the picture, but IE has spaces between the rows. I did a little debugging, and found it was from the /form. Does anyone know a fix to this?

• SQL SELECT from third level table

  Ok I know little about SQL so bare with me... I'm trying to see if certain values exist in a third level table and I don't know how to go about it. Here is the scenario... I have a Accident table that holds accident information. It has 3 one-to-many child tables (Units, Occupants, NonMotorists). An each of those child tables have their own many-to-many child table (Alcohol). I need to be able to have some way of seeing if a range of values exists in a field in those Alcohol tables. • Icon fonts vs images

  My manager tells me not to use icon fonts on our websites, as it is another http request plus the extra kBs to download. Also because I would have to use content before for the font (I can't change the html), he prefers background images so it works in IE7. Personally I love the little things, so nice and crisp and resizeable! I get it if we only use a couple of icons on a website but if I would use, say 5 icons on a site - what do you guys think? Is it worth using an icon font or is he right thinking that it is not? I am just a sucker for anything new and exciting, and this year it is the retina display.

• Custom DDL Templates for Visual Studio 2010

  I was wondering if anyone knows of some good community distributed custom DDL templates for Entity Framework 4.0. The default DDL to SQL10 Works well enough, but we're looking to do some customization to the naming convention that it just isn't offering us. I'm not really finding many samples out there of people doing this, so I was hoping someone might know of a resource I'm overlooking (perhaps I am searching for it wrong, or misunderstanding how the whole process works) Specifically we're wanting to change up how it writes out fields from relationships. For instance, the default template puts in.. tablename_propertyendpoint_propertyname. We're wanting to find tune this to our naming scheme a little more. And none of us can quite figure out where in the .tt files it is doing this exact behavior.

• Is there a way to only have StyleCop documenation requirements SA1600 on public methods/properties?

  I've been using XMLDoc for a few years now, and have definitely grown into the mindset for supplying quality documentation for public methods and properties. However under StyleCop (and particularly its Resharper highlighting) I've noticed that the documentation requirements apply to identically to public, internal, protected and private methods. This seems a little counter-intuative to me, so I would ideally like to suppress it down to suggestions at least for private methods. Unfortunately it does seem as if the suppress setting is only across all public, internal, private, etc. Am I missing something or is this by design?

• Data validation between SQL replicated tables

  Hi All, I am trying to figure out a way to validate the data in my publisher and subscriber in SQL 2005 replication. I thought of using sp_publication_validation, but it needs db_owner permission and we are not allowed to have it in our company. So I did bit more reading and found out about two other SPs that I think work for me. First one is sp_article_validation, which I plan to run on the publisher. For each article that I call this SP, its gonna give the row count and a checksum. With that info, I intend to call sp_table_validation on the subscriber, passing the row count and checksum from the previous SP, there by validating both tables. What do you guys think? Is this a proven way to validate data in replication? There is very little documentation on these SPs. • Javascript Pointers question with Dates

  I noticed this situation in my code (unfortunately), and was able to duplicate it in my own JS file. So I have this code: var date1 = new Date(); // today var date2 = date1; date2 = date2.setDate(date2.getDate() + 1); // what is date1? After this code executes, date1 is today's date + 1! This harkens back to my undergrad days when I learned about pointers, and I guess I'm a little rusty. Is that what's happening here? Obviously I've moved the assignment away from date1, and am only modifying date2, but date1 is being changed. Why is this the case? Incidentally, after this code executes date2 is a long number like 1272123603911. I assume this is the number of seconds in the date, but shouldn't date2 still be a Date object? setDate() should return a Date object... Thanks for the help.

• Storyboard changing controller (modal) not working

  I have problem with navigation between ViewControllers: here is my storyboard: http://postimg.org/image/dar9pkuvl/ The navigation between controllers in green rectangle works fine, I add to controller number 1 controller number 2 (by addtosubview) and then controllers number 3,4,5 to UIScrollView in controller number 2 ( controller number 2 contain scrollview). Everything work fine but if I click Send buttn on controller 4 nothing happens (It is strange because I was added connection between button and controller in the same way like between controllers 7 and 8). I know it is little bit confusing described, but I hope that someone tell me where is problem. Thanks

• Is it more secure to run a desktop app in a applet?

  Fist of all, when I say "run a desktop app in a applet" I mean do a Applet application that runs off-line, instead of a Desktop application that runs inside a JFrame. The little I know about applets (and maybe something I say is wrong, please correct me) is that applets have all permitions not granted by default. Also, the applets run inside a Sandbox, that does not allow information in or out without explicity permition. So, if I am focused on security in my application, its best to run it inside an applet (off-line, for a desktop application) then inside a JFrame. Is it right?
