• Sound does not work on the administrator profile.Works on a non-administrator profile on Windows XP

  Initially I suspected a missing driver, but then sound ( for movies,songs etc ) works fine on the other non-administrator account, but does not work when I log in to the Administrator account. And yes..I have checked the sound volume and mute status as well.   I'm subscribed to some mailing lists and every day people reply to a wrong mail (or they don't reply at all), so that their mail lands in the wrong (or a new) thread. I set the mail display in "View ? Sort by" to "Threaded". Example: mailing list "Foobar": [Foobar] random topic Re: [Foobar] random topic Re: [Foobar] random topic Re: [Foobar] random topic Re: [Foobar] random topic [Foobar] I'm John Doe Re: [Foobar] I'm John Doe Re: [Foobar] Welcome, John Re: [Foobar] random topic There are two discussions, one about "random topic", one about "John Doe". The subject line changes in the discussion about John Doe, which is fine (no problem here). But the last mail should be pigeonholed in the first thread. Instead it is at the top-level. Now, how can I move that last mail into the correct thread? I tried to drag&drop it at the mail I think it should be a reply to, but this doesn't work. I think theoretically it should be possible by fiddling with the mail headers after receiving the mail, but this doesn't seem to be a comfortable way.

• Exchanged HDD in MacBook Pro - OSX installation disk shows prohibitory sign

  I exchanged the HDD in my 2007 MacBook Pro and removed the dvd-drive because it was making terrible noise everytime I booted the MacBook. The new HDD is a Corsair Force F120 SATA SSD. Everytime I try to launch an OSX Lion installation disk or USB stick I get the grey prohibitory sign and the machine shuts down after a while. Since I didn't format the SSD beforehand there is still Windows 7 on it. It shows the white progress bar with the message "Windows is loading files" but never finishes it. I don't want Windows on that machine, just thought this fact may be important. Any ideas what is wrong?

• What to do before connecting Ubuntu Server to the internet for the first time?

  I just finished installing Ubuntu Server 12.10 on an Asus Eee PC 1000H (to be used as a home server/sandbox) from USB. I installed this software during installation: OpenSSH server LAMP server Samba file server Virtual Machine host I won't use 2, 3 or 4 for a while though. Can/should I turn these off somehow? I have turned home directory encryption on. Security updates are installed automatically. I have chosen a strong password for the single user. I have never plugged in the internet cable so far. Before doing so I'd like to ask: What can/should I do/install to increase security before connecting to the internet? Firewall? Fail2ban? Users/Passwords? Encryption? Enable/Disable functionality? etc. I'm sorry if you get this question a lot. I've searched around quite a while, but it still feels like I might overlook something important.

• Samsung 830 very slow benchmark numbers

  I just bought a new SSD, and installed a fresh copy of Windows on it. I didn't see any noticeable difference in boot times, app start-up times, so I decided to benchmark it. Asus P7P55D-E Intel i5-760 Samsung 830 256GB SATA III Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit The Windows experience index gave the drive a 7.3 rating, but real-world performance is not particularly impressive. Any ideas why the numbers are so low? UPDATE: It turns out that SATA III support is turned off by default on the P7P55D motherboard. After enabling it in BIOS (Tools - Level Up), the scores went up: Read Write Seq 325 183 4K 16 49 IOPS 32K 28K It's an improvement, but still far below what they should be for this drive.

• Lenovo Ideapad Y480 can't reinstall windows?

  Alright, so here's the deal... For a while, I wanted to mess with Linux. I don't know why, but I wanted to. So, what I did was use WUBI and install Ubuntu. Because of some unknown reason (Intel Rapid Start? Half the drivers being on a Lenovo-installed SSD [separate from the main hard drive]?) it wouldn't dual boot. So, I decided to use Linux Mint instead, and install it in a partition. Since Windows 7 Home Premium won't make partitions any more if you have a certain number already, I just shrank my system drive and left empty space for the installer to claim. When I installed Mint, it worked, but left my Windows 7 installation unable to boot and eventually it corrupted. I tried to use a system repair disc I burned earlier but it didn't find the Windows installation, so I assume the partition corrupted. I used this link:http://www.pcworld.com/article/248995/how_to_install_windows_7_without_the_disc.html to try and reinstall Windows. What happened was that originally it said that the partition I was trying to reinstall from had been locked down by the OEM (Lenovo). So, I went into GParted, wiped EVERYTHING, and selected 'Construct new Boot record' or whatever that function is, and now the error is: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information." Does anyone know how to see the log files? Can anyone help? This system is a month old but the warranty only covers hardware failures, and I would need to pay around USD$60 for them to fix it. Please help. Any ideas? this is my main machine... Extra information: I have at my disposal: System Repair Disc (Burned myself) Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1 installation disk (burned from the pcworld links) Gparted Live CD Linux Mint 13 live cd A system backup (from the morning before this catastrophe) made using the Windows Backup and Restore. I put it on an external drive...that should be safe for now.

• How to make a 100% UNIQUE dvd? [closed]

  Is it possible to make a DVD which would be next to impossible to replicate exactly even with special equipment? To be clear, not in the sense of making the data itself resistant to piracy - nothing like that. More like as an analogy to antiques - a reproduction of a furniture would be able to be spotted to a trained eye, that it is not the original. Is it possible to do this for a dvd? Like, say a dvd is copied, even by someone who is trying to use even special equipment and is hypothetically dying to copy the dvd exactly for whatever reason - even such copied dvd would be detectable that it is not exactly the original dvd somehow (as if it were a reproduction of an original antique, but not the original), and would be almost or even preferably impossible to actually copy 100% exact the dvd ever again. Just some ideas below on the sort of thing i might go about doing to do this, but really am not sure how or what programs, media, hardware, etc. would do the trick Not sure what would do the trick -- but for instance do there exist any blank dvd's that already come pre-recorded with some sort of serial number or bar code, or other metadata, or an encrypted hash, or something like that? Maybe any blank dvd will do but i should get a special software to extract hardcoded metadata? If so which software? Or special hardware even maybe? Such dvd which the "secret" can be: Well, to know what the "secret" is and if it is present on the disk, it probably should be readable by some software or maybe a particular hardware (i guess preferably only if some sort of key is known and input into the software, even better, only then such secret data on disk can be read, otherwise nothing shows up and it looks like just a regular disk with no secret on it), and Would be impossible to actually replicate, especially not with regular burning hardware and preferably not at all. Other idea: Is there any special software that can direct the write head of laser to physically "mar" the dvd in such a way that, when played in dvd player, makes a particular visual pattern or something like that, also say the mar itself shows up as faint scratch on disk, but would be impossible for someone to do themselves exactly? EDIT: Also to clarify suppose the dvd contains video and music that should be playable on dvd players, maybe a menu too (i.e not a dvd containing software), and also to clarify the question is about how to make dvd 100% unique, not how to make the actual content of dvd protected from "piracy".

  Is there a way to auto-hide the OS X menu bar, like is possible with the Dock? There was an application "Menufela" that did this for Tiger, but I'm not aware of anything similar for Leopard/Snow Leopard.. I'm almost certain this is (programatically) doable, because in full-screen applications the menu bar is hidden, and reappears when you mouse the mouse is at the top of the screen.. I've run the following command: sudo aptitude install imagemagick Now whenever I try to run 'display' from the command line, I get an error saying display: delegate library support not built-in `' (X11) @ display.c/DisplayImageCommand/1888. I can certainly include more details if asked, but at the moment I'm not sure what else to include. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.

I have a system of following configuration: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40GHz RAM: Corsair Vengeance - 4GB Single Module DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9) x 2 OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, SP1 Build 7601 HDD: 1 TB Seagate 7200 RPM The Problem It was working fine for about an year. Yesterday I planned to increase my RAM to 16 GB by putting another set of two Corsair Vengeance - 4GB Single Module DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9). I got it from an authorized reseller and also, the RAM was fitted by a service engineer only. After the RAM was fit (all the four), the system failed to start, with an error code of 0x000000f4. Then I hear a device disconnect sound, the one you hear in Windows 7, when a USB Mass Storage Device is plugged out. Immediately following that, my screen goes blank and I get 0x000000f4 blue screen. Okay, now I am really concerned about my Hard Disk data, but I have no clue if there is a problem with the HDD. My Question What all files do I need to submit for your reference? Can this issue be fixed? I am getting more time if I remove my RAM, clean it and then put it back. Weird! Hope I have given the necessary information to help you guys. Thanks in advance. It rotates at around 900 RPM, but the CPU Temperature is not more than 70° C. 30-Sep-2012 10:30 AM IST: My Modem (Beetel 220BX ADSL2+ Router) failed. I have no idea how it is related to this issue, but I thought that I need to document this too. I really have a bad day here. 30-Sep-2012 11:00 AM IST: System still running fine, with the cabinet cover open, now for about an hour. 30-Sep-2012 12:00 PM IST: I shut down the system and closed the cabinet. Started the system, and it hung after giving the password. After a few minutes, got the same 0x000000f4 error. So, while it is in the upright position, fixed the Hard Disk cable and now it is booting fine. Waiting for more observations and answers.

• Ubuntu 10.04 Keyboard and Mouse Freezing Problem

  I had a partition setup with Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 dual booting. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 by installing fresh from CD but leaving the previous /home folder as is. Things seemed to be working fine, but started finding that my mouse and keyboard were freezing. After a quick search on the internet, I found the following suggestions as shown here:- Ubuntu Forums Here the suggestion was to:- Edit /etc/default/grub, go to the line that begins like: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= Change it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off" After that, run this command: sudo update-grub and Reboot This seemed to have resolved the issue but after a couple of days I again find my mouse and keyboard freezing. I also find that my parallel port printer had also stopped working. I have saved the output of dmesg and my syslog. The first can be viewed here but the syslog had too many characters, so if someone can suggest an alternative to freetexthost, I can post it there. Moreover, if there is any other information that should be provided, do let me know. I do hope we can get to the bottom of this issue. Thank you in advance for any help that could be provided.

• Prevent Outlook from automatically deleting meeting emails

  I'm using Outlook Web Access to read my email. When I receive a meeting notice and acknowledge it, Outlook adds it to my calendar then deletes the email. Is there a way to disable Outlook automatically deleting the meeting email? There doesn't seem to be any way to configure this in Options - Messaging and Options - Calendar. Note that I'm using Outlook Web Access and not the desktop client. From the copyright date this appears to be Outlook 2007. Follow-up: Based on edusysadmin's comment I logged-in using IE8, which exposed a setting not available in Firefox - "Move out-of-date meeting requests and responses to the Deleted Items folder". However unchecking this box doesn't seem to impact the auto-delete behavior. Follow-up 2: Keep in mind I am using Outlook Web Access via a web browser. I do not have the thick client Outlook installed.

• New graphics card (GTX 760) slowing down entire PC

  My new graphics card is making my PC totally unusable. It boots up really slowly, and when the windows screen comes on, the mouse lags really far behind. Nothing opens at a normal speed. However, when I put in my 5-year old graphics card, it all works fine. I'm currently using a Foxconn Renaissance LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Motherboard, Intel Motherboard Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W Processor, and a EVGA SuperNOVA 850G2 80PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V/EPS12V 850W Power Supply . I know it can't be the power supply, because I just bought it today to try to fix the problem. I've also installed the newest version of BIOS available for my motherboard. I've also seen extreme variations in CPU while the new graphics card is in, and when the old graphics card is installed, it is much calmer. Any thoughts?

• How to disable the second partition without unmount it in Mac?

  I've installed OSX Yosemite in another partition in my Mac. But there is a problem. For example, I installed iBooks in both partition. When I right click one of my epub or pdf file, both iBooks are shown in my context menu. This is not what I want. What I want is to only allow the apps in Yosemite shown. Of course I can disable apps in my old Maverick partition by unmount the volume. But again this is not what I want because it will hide the partition when I boot my machine so that I can't boot up into my Maverick partition. Can anybody advise if there are any better ideas? NSTLD.VERISIGN-GRS.COM. 2010032400 1800 900 604800 86400 why does the response not contain the IP address of the root server? what do the numbers at the end of the reply mean. one of them is probably (definitely) the date. why does it report 2 root servers a.root and nstld.verisign? when i send the following queries dig com. ;; AUTHORITY SECTION:com. 51 IN SOA a.gtld-servers.net. nstld.verisign-grs.com. 1269425283 1800 900 604800 86400 again i do not get the ip addresses. when i query for the gtld server specified i can get the ip address. why is the response of dig net. same as that of dig com. except that instead of 51 we have 19 in the response.

• All browsers refusing to load a specific image on a webpage?

  Out of nowhere today, all 3 of my browsers (FF/Chrome/IE, OS = Win7 x64) are refusing to load the homepage of interfacelift.com correctly. It works fine on other PC's in the house (on the same network), so it is definitely related to this one PC. The browser won't load the main image on the page correctly (even though the source code looks good), however if I direct the browser to the exact location of that image, then it displays fine. So obviously I can get the HTML index (which locates the resource) and I can get to the resource. So why heck isn't it displaying properly on the index page? It's almost as if the HTML rendering engine has gone bad, on all 3 browsers at once. I've browsed to a bunch of other sites (including sites very heavy on JS, with HTML much more complex than the one in question here) and am seeing nothing funny. Only thing wonky I've done with my PC in the past several hours was replacing the system file Magnifier.exe with a copy of cmd.exe while playing around with some of the ideas mentioned in this guide. However, I've since then restored the files to their previous state, and I don't know how Magnifier would be related to this even if I hadn't restored it. Any ideas? I'm stumped!   I have a Western Digital N900 router. I was hoping I'd be able to throttle users based on their MAC address with it, which isn't possible sadly. Seems simple in principle though, duh. The battle against bandwidth hogging roomates rages on. Could I just set the local IP range to their IP, and then set the Local port range to every single port in existence. Then prioritize their IP to lower than mine? Will this work? What are all the ports? And what's the difference between Local and Remote IPs or Ports? Name: Roomate, Priority: Low, Protocol: TCP or UDP ??, Local IP Range: .101 to .101, Local Port Range: 0 to infinity, Remote IP Range: ? to ?, Remote Port Range: ? to ?

I do have a wired unlimited internet connection on my computer, and I wonder whether there is any gadget that I can plug into my computer (maybe at the usb port?) with which I can turn my computer into a wifi access point? • Custom authentication method for GDM

  I am trying to find a way of authenticating users on public computers through GDM, but I have a few things to be taken in account. The users do not have a login/password, they only thing they are given is a string. This string is unique and will allow us to identify them. You can see this string as a login without a password. The users must be present in a remote database The users must have the rights to login on the computer they are on at that time. A remote database would check if a booking on the computer had been set for that time by that user. Or if no booking had been made, allow to login. A default user id/home/gid has to be set to the user once logged in I have found ways to deal with most of those requirements, but not altogether. PAM looks nice to set up a custom way of checking if the user booked its computer. NSS MySQL looks nice to set up the environment. Would you know how to set up the environment by myself using a custom PAM module (using pam_python would be preferred)? Or any other method that could help me? Thanks in advance!
