  • Sound does not work on the administrator profile.Works on a non-administrator profile on Windows XP

    Initially I suspected a missing driver, but then sound ( for movies,songs etc ) works fine on the other non-administrator account, but does not work when I log in to the Administrator account. And yes..I have checked the sound volume and mute status as well. Details of my system OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Processor: 2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 Memory: 448 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory Board: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.     I have synchronised the e-Mail settings of the iPod touch with the settings of my IMAP account in Mail.app. Now sometimes the iPod would show there are new mails with Mail.app totally ignoring their existence for hours. Only when Mail.app is restarted would these new mails show up. Is there anything I can do that Mail.app is up-to-date even though the iPod is running?

  • Intermittent freeze of Windows 7 x64 on laptop

    I have Lenovo W500, 8GB RAM, 250GB Crucial SSD running Windows 7 x64 using boot-to-vhd. Lately I started to experience some random freezes for 5-30 seconds. And when I say "freeze" I mean it; it's like a time machine - no input taken, nothing is written anywhere, no log, no disk activity. And then suddenly machine would wake up and continue as if nothing happened. I do suspect that it's one of the drivers but I don't see any updates in the log lately except for .NET 4 framework and Adobe Reader. Out of new or updated software I can only recall Skype and IE9 but freezes started to occur definitely before IE install. Regular software includes but not limited to: Office 2010, VMWare Workstation, IE9, Chrome, Skype, Seesmic/TweeterDeck, Live Writer. How should I approach the "hunting season" to find our the culprit? Any tools or packages that could help me to identify the component, program, driver that causes the freeze? Cheers

  • Need software to save videos from 4tube.com - to watch the videos smoothly

    Isn't there a programs that will capture screen writes at the hardware level? I have tried several Firefox add-ons, and several stand-alone programs, and none of them will save videos from this site. I even paid for Replay Media Catcher, and it didn't work, so I got a refund. (The website for the best Firefox video downloader I have, Downloadhelper, said Replay Media Catcher worked with that site.) I have a slow internet connection, and cannot watch videos smoothly unless I can cache them. This site (4tube.com) doesn't cache, when you restart, it reloads, when you pause it stops - so I need to be able to save the videos to be able to watch them.

    I am trying to find a way of authenticating users on public computers through GDM, but I have a few things to be taken in account. The users do not have a login/password, they only thing they are given is a string. This string is unique and will allow us to identify them. You can see this string as a login without a password. The users must be present in a remote database The users must have the rights to login on the computer they are on at that time. A remote database would check if a booking on the computer had been set for that time by that user. Or if no booking had been made, allow to login. A default user id/home/gid has to be set to the user once logged in I have found ways to deal with most of those requirements, but not altogether. PAM looks nice to set up a custom way of checking if the user booked its computer. NSS MySQL looks nice to set up the environment. Would you know how to set up the environment by myself using a custom PAM module (using pam_python would be preferred)? Or any other method that could help me? Thanks in advance!

  • New graphics card (GTX 760) slowing down entire PC

    My new graphics card is making my PC totally unusable. It boots up really slowly, and when the windows screen comes on, the mouse lags really far behind. Nothing opens at a normal speed. However, when I put in my 5-year old graphics card, it all works fine. I'm currently using a Foxconn Renaissance LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Motherboard, Intel Motherboard Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W Processor, and a EVGA SuperNOVA 850G2 80PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V/EPS12V 850W Power Supply . I know it can't be the power supply, because I just bought it today to try to fix the problem. I've also installed the newest version of BIOS available for my motherboard. I've also seen extreme variations in CPU while the new graphics card is in, and when the old graphics card is installed, it is much calmer. Any thoughts?

  • How to disable the second partition without unmount it in Mac?

    I've installed OSX Yosemite in another partition in my Mac. But there is a problem. For example, I installed iBooks in both partition. When I right click one of my epub or pdf file, both iBooks are shown in my context menu. This is not what I want. What I want is to only allow the apps in Yosemite shown. Of course I can disable apps in my old Maverick partition by unmount the volume. But again this is not what I want because it will hide the partition when I boot my machine so that I can't boot up into my Maverick partition. Can anybody advise if there are any better ideas?   • Is there any *good* HTML-mode for emacs?

    I love emacs, and I want to do my web-programming work in it, but I can't find a way to get it to edit HTML properly. I mean it's seriously awful. It will do HTML fine, but not PHP, javascript, etc. I tried getting html-helper-mode... I downloaded it, put it in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp, and added it to my .emacs file: (autoload 'html-helper-mode "html-helper-mode" "Yay HTML" t) (setq auto-mode-alist (cons '("\\.html$" . html-helper-mode) auto-mode-alist)) copied and pasted from some site (I don't know elisp). it just, doesn't highlight anything at all. I tried downloading a whole bunch of modes and using some other mode to string them together, to no avail. Emacs is so great in every other way--why can't it do the simple task of editing web pages? I mean, it's a pretty standard thing to do for editors these days. So, does anyone know how to do this?

    I'm trying to install ImageMagick to my Ubuntu box. I've run the following command: sudo aptitude install imagemagick Now whenever I try to run 'display' from the command line, I get an error saying display: delegate library support not built-in `' (X11) @ display.c/DisplayImageCommand/1888. I can certainly include more details if asked, but at the moment I'm not sure what else to include. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.

    When I create and store macros in Excel 2007 using the Personal file in the XLstart folder then open and go to close Excel using the close buttom in the upper right hand corner I now have to click it twice to completely close Excel however if I use the Excel Exit button by clicking on the Office 2007 button first Excel will close on one. Is there away I can store macros for use with all workbooks I open with Excel and be able to close on one from the close button in the upper right hand corner after saving the current workbook I have be working on?

Redundancy to protect the backup from corruption. A reasonable cost (< $30 per month). A SLA in case the service provider faults on its agreements.

  • Lenovo Ideapad Y480 can't reinstall windows?

    Alright, so here's the deal... For a while, I wanted to mess with Linux. I don't know why, but I wanted to. So, what I did was use WUBI and install Ubuntu. Because of some unknown reason (Intel Rapid Start? Half the drivers being on a Lenovo-installed SSD [separate from the main hard drive]?) it wouldn't dual boot. So, I decided to use Linux Mint instead, and install it in a partition. Since Windows 7 Home Premium won't make partitions any more if you have a certain number already, I just shrank my system drive and left empty space for the installer to claim. When I installed Mint, it worked, but left my Windows 7 installation unable to boot and eventually it corrupted. I tried to use a system repair disc I burned earlier but it didn't find the Windows installation, so I assume the partition corrupted. I used this link:http://www.pcworld.com/article/248995/how_to_install_windows_7_without_the_disc.html to try and reinstall Windows. What happened was that originally it said that the partition I was trying to reinstall from had been locked down by the OEM (Lenovo). So, I went into GParted, wiped EVERYTHING, and selected 'Construct new Boot record' or whatever that function is, and now the error is: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information." Does anyone know how to see the log files? Can anyone help? This system is a month old but the warranty only covers hardware failures, and I would need to pay around USD$60 for them to fix it. Please help. Any ideas? this is my main machine... Extra information: I have at my disposal: System Repair Disc (Burned myself) Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1 installation disk (burned from the pcworld links) Gparted Live CD Linux Mint 13 live cd A system backup (from the morning before this catastrophe) made using the Windows Backup and Restore. I put it on an external drive...that should be safe for now.

  • suddenly cannot mount nfs share from Windows 7

    I recently reinstalled my file server (moved from fedora to Ubuntu server). Now I cannot mount my nfs share from Windows 7, mounting from Mac OSX works fine. In Windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does Ubuntu need some special magic to allow Windows 7 to mount an nfs share?   • Prevent Outlook from automatically deleting meeting emails

    I'm using Outlook Web Access to read my email. When I receive a meeting notice and acknowledge it, Outlook adds it to my calendar then deletes the email. Is there a way to disable Outlook automatically deleting the meeting email? There doesn't seem to be any way to configure this in Options - Messaging and Options - Calendar. Note that I'm using Outlook Web Access and not the desktop client. From the copyright date this appears to be Outlook 2007. Follow-up: Based on edusysadmin's comment I logged-in using IE8, which exposed a setting not available in Firefox - "Move out-of-date meeting requests and responses to the Deleted Items folder". However unchecking this box doesn't seem to impact the auto-delete behavior. Follow-up 2: Keep in mind I am using Outlook Web Access via a web browser. I do not have the thick client Outlook installed.

  • All browsers refusing to load a specific image on a webpage?

    Out of nowhere today, all 3 of my browsers (FF/Chrome/IE, OS = Win7 x64) are refusing to load the homepage of interfacelift.com correctly. It works fine on other PC's in the house (on the same network), so it is definitely related to this one PC. The browser won't load the main image on the page correctly (even though the source code looks good), however if I direct the browser to the exact location of that image, then it displays fine. So obviously I can get the HTML index (which locates the resource) and I can get to the resource. So why heck isn't it displaying properly on the index page? It's almost as if the HTML rendering engine has gone bad, on all 3 browsers at once. I've browsed to a bunch of other sites (including sites very heavy on JS, with HTML much more complex than the one in question here) and am seeing nothing funny. Only thing wonky I've done with my PC in the past several hours was replacing the system file Magnifier.exe with a copy of cmd.exe while playing around with some of the ideas mentioned in this guide. However, I've since then restored the files to their previous state, and I don't know how Magnifier would be related to this even if I hadn't restored it. Any ideas? I'm stumped!   • Data recovery on a corrupted 3TB disk

    Short version I probably need software to run a deep-scan recovery (ideally on Linux) to find files on NTFS filesystem. The file data is intact, but the references are no longer present. Analogous to recovering data from a "quick-formatted" partition. Hopefully there is a smarter way available than deep-scan, one which would recover filenames and possibly paths. Long version I have a 3TB disk containing a load of backups. Windows 7 SP1 refused to detect the disk when plugged in directly via SATA, so I put it on a USB/SATA adaptor which seemed to work at first. The SATA/USB adaptor probably does not support disks over 2.2TB though. Windows first asked me if I wanted to 'format' the disk, then later showed me most of the contents but some folder were inaccessible. I stupidly decided to run a CHKDSK on my backup disk, which made the folders accessible but also left them empty. I connected this disk via SATA to my main PC (Arch Linux). I tried: testdisk ntfsundelete ntfsfix --no-action (to look for diagnostically relevant faults, disk was "OK" though) to no avail as the files references in the tables had presumably been zeroed out by CHKDSK, rather than using a typical journal'd deletion). If it is useful at all, a majority of the files that I want to recover are JPEG, Photoshop PSD, and MPEG-3/MPEG-4/AVI/MKV files. If worst comes to worst, I'll just design my own sector scanner and use some simple heuristic-driven analysis to recover raw binary blocks of data from the disk which appears to match the structures of the above file types. I am unfamiliar with the exact workings of NTFS but used to be proficient at recovering FAT32 systems with just a hex-editor, so I can provide any useful diagnostic information if you let me know how to find it! My priorities in ascending order of importance for choosing the accepted answer: Restores directory structure Recovers many filenames in addition to the file data Is free / very cheap Runs on Linux Recovers a majority of file data The last point is the most important, but the more of the higher points you match the more rep you'll probably get :)

  • Auto-hide OS X menu bar?

    Is there a way to auto-hide the OS X menu bar, like is possible with the Dock? There was an application "Menufela" that did this for Tiger, but I'm not aware of anything similar for Leopard/Snow Leopard.. I'm almost certain this is (programatically) doable, because in full-screen applications the menu bar is hidden, and reappears when you mouse the mouse is at the top of the screen..     Has anyone had any luck getting Windows Live mail to sync with a Palm Pre with WebOS 1.1? I have tried the manual setup options setting up the pop3 incoming server on port 995 with SSL encryption and the smtp out going server on both ports 25 and 587 with TTL encryption. It acts like it is connected, but it just keeps wanting to refresh and never shows anything in the inbox.
