• Why can i download anything from the internet?

Why is ubuntu doing this?. I can no longer use my ipod, download songs, download software.

  After upgrading to 13.10, every time I boot I'm shown a login prompt (tty1) for ~30 seconds before lightdm automatically starts. Everything works fine after that. Any ideas on what I could try to fix/debug this? • Ubuntu 14.04 doesn' t boot after upgrade from 12.04 installed inside Windows 8.1

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed like an app on windows 8.1 (Ubuntu 12.04 allow to be installed like an app in Windows 8.1 and it can be removed when you don't need it any more from Control Panel). Usually, to chose what os to boot when you start the laptop, you can choose between windows 8.1 and Ubuntu after windows logo appeared at start up and that was ok until I made this upgrade. Now when I try to choose Ubuntu the laptop try to boot it but, after that full colored screen is showed the screen go black and this messages appear: mount: mounting /dev/loop0/ on /root failed : Invalid argument mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory Target filesystem doesn' t have requested /sbin/init No init found. I decided to boot it by Gparted and change the Root directory to NTFS, I formatted it and run xp cd again. I can't find any hard drive too. I don't want to change all partitions because I don't want to lose my data on them. What should I do ?

  By inadvertance, I've created a file called -r into my home directory. Please don't ask me how and why, I don't recall. But the fact is that now I cannot get rid of it : rm -rf rm: missing operand Try 'rm --help' for more information. Other try : rm /-/r rm: cannot remove ‘/-/r’: No such file or directory Another one : rm \-r rm: missing operand Try 'rm --help' for more information. Is there a way to remove this file without deleting the whole directory ? Thanks.

  I cannot categorize this question under ubuntu since it has nothing to do with it. But I know people here can definitely answer this. I login to one of my deployment boxes using SSH (no ubuntu here). I am working in a tool called TeamCity which uses a folder called ".BuildServer" under home directory of the user. This folder may grow in size as the application runs but the current user is only given a limited amount of space. But the good thing this I got a folder access outside /home/deploy (deploy being the user here) folder. I now want to link this .BuildServer inside the /home/deploy directory to the other folder where I got permission for (meaning all the files should be re-routed to that directory) Hope my question was clear, please help.

  I am trying to get an nfs client running on a Sheeva-plug running debian 2.6.22. The host is Ubuntu 12.04 and claims (from showmount -e) to be exporting the desired directory. There is no showmount binary in the sheeva-plug, so I'm trying to install it from the nfs-common package: # apt-get install nfs-common The response ends with E: could not open lock file /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (no such file or directory) E: Unable to lock the download directory. I am root while doing this. Similar errors arise when trying to install other packages. How do I correct these errors so apt-get will do its work?

  I want to patch on Trac package. I know how to patch and rebuild the package, but there are some things I don't understand very well. My patch is something dangerous and not likely to commit back to the community. So, let me just say, it's a very private patch. But, I want my patch keep working when the Ubuntu packages upgrade. (Should I apt-get source trac and move my patch to the new version of source directory each time the Trac upgrades?) I see there is a patch/ directory (many using quilt I guess) in debian/, but I don't know how to use it? Will debuild automatic apply all patches in the patch/ directory? And what about dpkg-buildpackage? Is there some environ variables to control the selection of patches to apply?

  My site's pages are in multiple languages whereby each language version shares its media (images) with the other language versions. I place all versions and the media in a single directory with the same name. E.g. pages mypage-en.html, mypage-fr.html etc. will sit in directory mypage. The directory path suffices to reference a page: h t t p : //....../mypage/ is good enough, there is no need for h t t p : //....../mypage/mypage-en/html A rewrite with RewriteRule ^(.*)/([a-zA-Z0-9]+)/?$ /$1/$2/$2-en.html lets me use the shorter form. But what if the name mypage contains spaces (which some do) ? I want h t t p : //....../my page/ to lead to h t t p : //....../my page/my page.html Using RewriteRule ^(.*)/([a-zA-Z0-9|\s]+)/?$ /$1/$2/$2-en.html did not work. Any hints welcome. (please do not ask me why I want to do this, nor tell me I should not use spaces in file names)

• Restrict user to folder (not root) on VSFTPD in Ubuntu

  I am a new Linux (Ubuntu) user and have a VPS where I am setting up a backup FTP service. I have followed this guide, which I have managed to do correctly and it works. I have two users (user1 and user2) with the same directory /home/users/test. user1 can read/write and user2 can only read. This works OK. When the users log in, they go straight into the correct directory /home/users/test, but they can navigate back down to the home directory, which I do not want to happen. I cannot seem to find out how to not allow this, and have them not be able to navigate back to the /home/ or /home/test/ directories.

• What happens to my domain if the TLD fails?

  First question, hopefully I don't mess this up. I have recently registered some domains on the basically brand new .directory gTLD. Because of operating costs to maintain a gTLD, it is assumed that many of the hundreds being rolled out this year and next will fail. I will admit I am not very knowledgable on how the TLD process works. What exactly does a new TLD failing mean? I realize that they lose ICANN accreditation, but does that just mean that they will be no longer be sold? If the .directory were to go under, would my .directory domains be affected? I bought it from domain registrar Gandi if that helps.

• SSL on multiple directories

  I have a website that is http, but has a port set up for https for a specific directory that is for the shopping cart. Now I'd like to use our SSL on a different directory in the same site as well. How can I go about configuring that? I have tried looking into all of the config files as well as the docs and cannot figure it out. I tried setting this in httpd.config as well <VirtualHost 127.0.0.1:[ssl port]> #also tried *:[ssl port] and [actual IP]:[ssl port] ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot "C:/path/sslNeededDir" ServerName www.example.com </VirtualHost> hoping that it would cause pages in this directory to use ssl port and become https, but that didn't do anything. Any help is greatly appreciated. Update: This finally got migrated over. I'm still looking for a solid answer on this. If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

• Macbook Pro - Randomly sleeps and won't wake up

  All, I have a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2009) that has had a long time issues which seems to be getting worse. Occasionally, I will go to wake the computer with the keyboard and can't wake it. The HDD spins up, the light on the front of the computer stops blinking, but as soon as it seems like the display should light up, the HDD stops and the light begins blinking again. More rarely, the computer will suddenly sleep while I am using it and then enters the same sleep loop. The only way to resume working on the computer is to wait. Doing a hard restart just puts it right back into the 'sleep loop.'   Some details: Webserver: Apache/2.2.13 (FreeBSD) mod_ssl/2.2.13 OpenSSL/0.9.8e OS: FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE This is a FreeBSD Jail. I believe I use the Apache 'prefork' MPM (I run the default for FreeBSD). I use the default values for MaxClients (256) I have enabled mod_status, with "ExtendedStatus On". When I view /server-status , I see a handful of regular requests. I also see over 240 requests from the 'localhost', like these. 37-0 - 0/0/1 . 0.00 1510 0 0.0 0.00 0.00 127.0.0.2 www.example.gov OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 38-0 - 0/0/1 . 0.00 1509 0 0.0 0.00 0.00 127.0.0.2 www.example.gov OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 39-0 - 0/0/3 . 0.00 1482 0 0.0 0.00 0.00 127.0.0.2 www.example.gov OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 40-0 - 0/0/6 . 0.00 1445 0 0.0 0.00 0.00 127.0.0.2 www.example.gov OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 I also see about 2417 requests yesterday from the localhost, like these: Apr 14 11:16:40 192.168.16.127 httpd[431]: www.example.gov 127.0.0.2 - - [15/Apr/2010:11:16:40 -0700] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - "-" "Apache (internal dummy connection)" The page at http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/InternalDummyConnection says "These requests are perfectly normal and you do not, in general, need to worry about them", but I'm not so sure. Why are there over 230 of these? Are these active connections? If I have "MaxClients 256", and over 230 of these connections, it seems that my webserver is dangerously close to running out of available connections. It also seems like Apache should only need a handful of these "internal dummy connections" We actually had two unexplained outages last night, and I am wondering if these "internal dummy connection" caused us to run out of available connections. UPDATE 2010/04/16 It is 8 hours later. The /server-status page still shows that there are 243 lines which say "www.example.gov OPTION *". I believe these connections are not active. The server is mostly idle (1 requests currently being processed, 9 idle workers). There are only 18 active httpd processes on the Unix host. If these connections are not active, why do they show up under /server-status? I would have expected them to expire a few minutes after they were initialized.

• Weird random application hang problem

  I am trying to understand an application hang problem that started up lately on my windows xp system. The system runs fine for days (sometimes) without ever shutting down or putting it to sleep, but the problem first shows up as one of the apps hanging. The application's UI stops responding or one or more background threads hang, so even though the GUI is responding, it is not doing anything (e.g., in VirtualDub's case, the UI responds fine, but the job doesn't progress and I won't even be able to abort it). The weirdness part comes from the fact that if I try to kill such an app, the program that is used to kill it goes into the same mode (i.e, that hangs instead of the original). E.g., if I use Process Explorer to kill it, the original program exits, but procexp now hangs. If I use another instance of procexp to kill the one that is hanging, this repeats, so there is always at least one program hanging in that state. This is not specific to procexp, I tried the native task manager and even the "End Process" dialog from windows explorer that shows up when you try to close a non-responsive GUI (in this case, the explorer itself hangs). The only program that didn't hang after the kill, is the command line taskkill. However, in this case, explorer hangs instead of taskkill. Also, once this problem starts manifesting, it soon ends up freezing the whole system to the extent that even a clean shutdown is not possible, so I have learned to reboot as soon as I notice this problem, however this is very inconvenient, as I often have encoding batch jobs going on which can't continue the job after the restart. The longer I leave the system running after seeing this problem, the more applications get into this state. I have tried to do a repair install but that didn't make any difference. I also uninstalled some of the newer installs, but again no difference. I tried to search online, but got inundating results for generic hang and crash related problems. Though I couldn't notice any pattern, it seems as though the problem is more frequent if I have some video encoding going on at that time. I had the system running for days when I only do browsing and internet audio/video chat before I decide to start encoding something and the problem starts to show up. I am not too sure if it is the encoding program that first hangs, though I almost always noticed that too hanging (like the VirtualDub stopping to make progress). I also had to reboot 3 times on one day when I was heavily experimenting with encoding. I would appreciate any help in narrowing down this problem and save me the trouble of reinstalling. I don't especially want to loose my gotd installs.

  when viewing a television program using Internet Explorer/Firefox/Chrome/SeaMonkey/Safari it constantly pauses unless I have some kind of activity with either the mouse or the keyboard. The browser with the least amount of problems is SeaMonkey, the one with the most is Internet Explorer. Annie idea of what is causing this or how to prevent it? • HP F2180 driver installation fails on 64-bit Windows 7

  Hello; I am trying to install the HP Deskjet AIO (non-network) driver on my machine, which is running the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Before installing it, Windows detected my printer just fine... But I wanted to use the HP scanning application, because tt allows me to scan several photos at once. I ran the DJ_AIO_NonNetwork_ENU_NB file I got from their site, and the installation went almost without a problem... However, at the part where it should have detected the printer, it didn't, so I skipped it - telling the installer I'll connect the printer later. After it was finished I was able to use it regularly, and also scan using the wanted HP application. However, the installer kept popping at random intervals, and giving me an error message. Yesterday I tried removing all the installed HP Applications, and installing from scratch. Running the same installer setup, it now insists that it does not support my operating system, and that 64-bit Vista is the highest it can go... I just don't understand why this is occuring all of the sudden. Has anybody here successfully installed the AIO driver on the 64-bit version of Windows 7? UPDATE: Been chatting with HP chat support over the weekend. Managed to really mess up my windows. At first, they told me to uninstall using an "unintall_l3" batch file inside their installer package, and then reinstall. Didn't work. Also the "l4" batch didn't make any difference. Afterwards I was told to install "Windows install clean up" and remove many hp entries (most of which were not listed on my computer), and I also removed many other hp entries I bumped upon. Then my office 2k7 started failing. I searched around the web, and ran Security Restore, so now my office works, but my windows explorer is all buggy - can't seem to open windows explorer - it hangs while trying to load my hard drives, or completely ignores them and just shows my libraries. Anyone here has any idea how I can restore my win7 to normal, with or without the annoying scanner? UPDATE 2: Ok - explorer back to normal. I guess I just had to wait until it finishes searching while opening the windows explorer for the first time after the Security Restore. Scanner still not working though.

  I have Visual Studio 2008 and I installed Team Explorer 2008 Team Explorer 2008 gives me the following error message when trying to connect a TFS 2010 server: TF31002: Unable to connect to this Team Foundation Server: servername.... Any thougths?
