• Radeon HD 6290 terrible performance on a certified laptop

  I bought Asus K53U laptop, which is Ubuntu certified with pre-installed 11.10. The graphic card is Radeon HD 6290 but 720p playback is terrible. Even page scrolling in Firefox is very laggy. Proprietary drivers are installed by default. How is this possible, why is the laptop Ubuntu certified if the performance is poor? Any solution to this? I just did apt-get autoremove, and after that, this message came out in terminal: Error inserting vesafb (/lib/modules/3.0.0-15-generic/kernel/drivers/video/vesafb.ko): No such device Could that be the problem?

• Alps touchpad detected as mouse dell inspiron n5110

  Now I know that this has been asked several times here but I couldn't find any decent solution to it. So I am running the latest Ubuntu on my dell n5110 and my touchpad is detected as a mouse, So I don't have the touchpad options avaliable. can't use multitouch and can't disable it either. I have tried the dkms driver: http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/alps-touchpad/psmouse-alps-0.10/ but when installing it with dpkg I get the following error: ERROR (dkms apport): unable to determine source package for psmouse-alps-dkms Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.2.0-25-generic-pae (i686) Consult /var/lib/dkms/psmouse-alps/0.10/build/make.log for more information. I have installed all the updates as well. Can someone help me out with this issue?

• What is the need of Odata when I have JSON ?

  I am trying to understand the point of Odata and when it would make sense. Right now how I work is I use ASP.NET and MVC/WebApi controller to serialize/deserialize objects into JSON and have javascript do something with it. From what I can tell the benefit of OData is being able to query directly from the URL ... But since I am writing the client and server code there is no need for that. Would anyone ever parse the results of a ODaya query in javascript?? Maybe OData is more about providing a generic endpoint for ALL clients to get detailed information from a query that JSON does not provide ? So if I was a provider of data then I suppose that is what odata is for ? Help me understand the purpose and use of REST/JSON/ODATA.

• Alternative to Google Adsense which has good international coverage

  I have a technical blog (programming related) which has around 500 visit per days, 70% are international visitors and 30% are from US/CA. Google Adsense disabled my account due to invalid clicks so I can't use them (no need to explain here, they suck hard and never respect and listen to the publishers' appeal) I have tried adbrite and recently using chitika but they almost give me nothing, e.g. chitika 13,865 Page Views 4 clicks $0.01 The performance is so poor even I don't want to mention about it. I am already putting a full top banner and a 350x200 box in article body. I am researching if any alternative would provide more revenue for my internation visitors or technical visitors. Thanks.

  It's obvious that to gain more customers on any given platform, one of the most important steps to take would be to localize your software into many languages: as many as possible, ideally. However, with independently developed apps, it tends to be difficult to localize into many different languages, due to not having the budget and / or time to do so. My question is if I were to localize my apps into languages other than English on the iOS App Store, which languages should I prioritize? (Maybe the top three or four most important.) I go through various projects, written by various programmers, who implement MVC in different ways. Especially, i get confused, about the relation between the MainView ( parent view ) and some CustomView ( widget etc) in the framework. I personally pass reference of the MainView into the ViewController to be instantiated. All the subviews of ViewController are added to that reference of MainView. • Getting the Dell XPS 16 Synaptics touchpad to work after hibernation

  I am currently experimenting with using Ubuntu as a my main OS instead of Windows 7. So far, pretty much everything is working fine, except for an issue that I am having with my touchpad. I have a Dell XPS 16 (1640) with a Synaptics touchpad. It works out of the box, but it seems that it stops working after returning from hibernation mode. This problem has also been addressed in an earlier bug, but judging from this bugreport, it should be fixed by now. I am running the 2.6.35-23-generic-pae kernel. Any ideas?

  As a last resort to my question, I am yet to try the mem parameter of kernel to force it to use the specified amount of RAM. Short Summary - I can only see 3.2GB RAM on a 64bit OS and am not sure ifs a hardware limitation, so wants to try as I found a post on Ubuntuforums. My question is if its ok to play with my resident Ubuntu install or should I be using a live bootable usb? What values do I try (I have 6GB with only 3.2GB being usable) and how to keep it safe? I don't want to burn any of my hardware component at this point of time or make the system unbootable. Running Ubuntu 11.10 with kernel 3.0.0-13-generic

  Today I got an brand new Dell XPS 13 and I really like it. Wifi/Bluetooth/Brightness works very well. But only the Touchpad makes me insane. Okay, Multitouch is really nice and i love it on my Macbook but... i must click to click. How can I set up that is an "touch" to click? Its makes me insane. click, click, click.. Can I configure it?   I have seen lots of articles but none really help me. That is because I want to use dapper as a DAL. Should I create repositories with special functions? Like getStaffActive()? If I use repositories I can implement with dapper-extension a generic crud I have no idea how to handle database connection. Where to open the connection? If I do this at every function then how am I supposed to use transaction scope? Somehow the repositories I work with should share a connection in order transaction to work. But how to do this? Openning connection in BLL? If I use queries and execute them directly then still the same thing.

• Why has wireless disappeared after my 12.10 upgrade?

  I just upgraded to 12.10 on my Lenovo B570 laptop. NetworkManager isn't displaying a submenu for wireless connections at all, even though I downloaded the update through the wireless connection. This displeases me. Stuff I've tried includes: $ sudo modprobe wl FATAL: Module wl not found. $ sudo lspci -nn | grep "BCM" 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01) $ rfkill list all 0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no ETA: linux-headers-generic is already the newest version, and what I get when reinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source includes the following, near the end. • Ubuntu not booting from USB on laptop (no optical drive)

  I'm using a Kingston 16GB USB, with the Unetbootin program. (I've tried both downloading the installation iso manually and adding it, or using the program to download.) I've tried creating the bootable USB on an iMac, the laptop and also a desktop. I've booted into the setup of the laptop and changed the boot order to make sure it boots from that drive first. (There is no optical drive so that isn't a problem.) It's an Acer Aspire AS3810TZ. Upon booting it gives this message: SYSLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al I get this no matter how I create the USB, it just sits there. I left the laptop for an hour and it hadn't moved. I've also tried on a different 4GB USB (Generic) and that did the same.
