• Add Events to Windows Live Calendar in IE 8

  Do you have event dates that you need to make note of while browsing in Internet Explorer? Adding those events to your Live Calendar is easy to do with the Add Events to Windows Live Calendar accelerator. Adding Events to your Live Calendar To add the accelerator click on Add to Internet Explorer and then confirm the installation when the secondary window appears. For our example we chose the “estimated” availability date of Microsoft Office 2010 to the public. At the bottom of the pre-order page we found the date we were looking for. To add an event highlight the desired text (will become event description) and select the Add an Event to Windows Live Calendar listing in the context menu. • Allow email from a particular sender through spam filter

  We are running exchange 2010 and are using the built in anti-spam feature. We have set up Content Filtering, IP Block List Providers, Sender ID, Sender Reputation and it filters out most of the junk but it also quarantines all emails from one of our customers. It is being quarantined because of the Content Filter agent (Report Below). How can I add an exception for this email address to the Content Filter. I can see how to setup an exception for a delivery address ("Don't filter messages sent TO the following recipients") but I want to add [email protected] to our safe list. I don't want to add the whole domain as it is a very popular ISP in Australia and we often get junk from them. • .NET development on Macs

  I posted the “exciting” conclusion of my laptop trade-ins and issues on my personal blog. The links, in chronological order, are posted below. While those posts have all of the details about performance and software used, I wanted to comment on why I like using Macs in the first place. It started in 2006 when Apple released the first Intel-based Mac. As someone with a professional video past, I had been using Macs on and off since college (1995 graduate), so I was never terribly religious about any particular platform. I’m still not, but until recently, it was staggering how crappy PC’s were. They were all plastic, disposable, commodity crap. I could never justify buying a PowerBook because I was a Microsoft stack guy. When Apple went Intel, they removed that barrier. They also didn’t screw around with selling to the low end (though the plastic MacBooks bordered on that), so even the base machines were pretty well equipped. Every Mac I’ve had, I’ve used for three years. Other than that first one, I’ve also sold each one, for quite a bit of money. Things have changed quite a bit, mostly within the last year. I’m actually relieved, because Apple needs competition at the high end. Other manufacturers are finally understanding the importance of industrial design. For me, I’ll stick with Macs for now, because I’m invested in OS X apps like Aperture and the Mac versions of Adobe products. As a Microsoft developer, it doesn’t even matter though… with Parallels, I Cmd-Tab and I’m in Windows. So after three and a half years with a wonderful 17” MBP and upgraded SSD, it was time to get something lighter and smaller (traveling light is critical with a toddler), and I eventually ended up with a 13” MacBook Air, with the i7 and 8 gig upgrades, and I love it. At home I “dock” it to a Thunderbolt Display.   well, i hope this doesn't get categorized as a boating question, but it really is related to programming. I have windows XP, and i am going to have to have a VM running: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 Sql Server 2008 IIS 7 (8 in a little while) Wamp Photoshop CS5 etc... so i was wondering what should i use to be easier to install and configure, and best performance: Virtual Box or Microsoft's Virtual Machine? Thank you Well i tried Virtual Box, it's always crashing for some reason. I think i'm going to try Virtual PC, just to stick to an all Microsoft Solution.

  Will this increase my Virtual private Server failing rate if i :- install Microsoft Window Server 2008 Enterprise install SQL server enterprise 2008 install IIS 7.5 install ASP.Net Mvc 2 install Microsoft Exchange install Team foundation server on one mini VPS with specification of DELL Poweredge R710 shared plan DDR3 ECC RAMs 16GB and -- 1GB for this VPS using DELL PERC 6i raid controller (this thing alone about 1.5k-2k) and the SAS HDD (15K RPM) (146GB) -- 33GB to this VPS each hdd is freaking fast over 300MB read / write possible with proper tuning the motherboard is a DELL and it has twin redundant PSU (870watt 85%eff) its running on Intel Xeon 5502 (Quad Core) x2 so about 8 physical proc (fairly share) is there any ruler for this about one VPS can only install what what what service ? • Cannot Login to SBS 2008

  Hi All, I'm hoping someone has an answer for me... I installed a new Microsoft SBS 2008 server last week and everything appeared to be working normally. I went to reboot the server yesterday to finish the install for Microsoft Windows Installer 4.5 and upon reboot could no longer login to the server via either RDP or local console. The error message I get states that there are no logon servers available to service the logon request. I'm able to login to the server fine via Safe Mode with Networking but cannot login via a normal method. The server is currently at SP1. I attempted to install SP2 inside of safe mode after enabling the installation services via a registry edit but the install failed and rolled back after 2 or 3 hours. It appears that one of the services is not starting for some reason. I believe it's LSASS but can't actually login to see the active services during a normal boot. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  I found myself in need of exporting PowerPoint slides from a presentation and was fairly excited when I found that you could save them off in standard image formats. • Can't run telnet in console opened by Autohotkey

  I have enabled the telnet client on my Windows 7 64-bit machine and if I open the start menu and launch cmd from there I can run telnet. I normally use the keyboard shortcut Win-C, implemented by this AutoHotkey snippet to open a console. #c::Run, C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe For some strange reason when I try to run telnet in a console window opened this way I get Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\Steve\Documentstelnet 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Running path in any console, regardless of how it was opened produces the same output. Can anyone shed any light on why telnet might run in one console but not the other?

• Why do some people hate Dart? [closed]

  First, I'd like to note that this question is not intended to compare two languages or technologies, but is only asking about criticisms aimed at a language. I've always thought it a good idea to somehow get rid of Javascript. It works, but it's just so messy. I think many will agree with me there. And that's how I interpreted Google's release of Dart. It seems to me like a very good alternative to Javascript. Now, it looks like some are not very happy that Google has released this new language. Take a look at this Wikipedia page to see what I'm talking about. If you don't feel like reading it, I'll tell you now that some seem to think that Dart is similar to Microsoft's VBScript, in that it only works on Microsoft's browsers. This goes against the web's openness. But it's my understanding that Dart can be compiled to Javascript, which will allow it to be run on any modern browser (as the Wikipedia article also states). So my question is: are these criticisms valid? Is there a real fear that Google is trying to control the web's front-end to be more compatible with its browser?

Shutdown Disconnect AC Insert battery Connect AC Startup Option 2: Turn off laptop. Unplug AC power. Remove battery. Replace AC power. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. Once logged in to the machine, perform a normal shut down. Unplug AC power. Replace battery. Replace AC power. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. • Is there anyway to configure Google account for Windows 8 Sync?

  Recently upgraded to Windows 8. The problem is a lot of Sync features requires Microsoft account to linked. Even though I have one, I don't want to spare one for Sync purpose. Additionally, Google-Chrome's sync feature is absolutely charming. So I prefer Google for storing my data. So, 1) Is there anyway to replace Microsoft Sync with other accounts by patching or modifying any byte? 2) I want to replace Maps, Weather, and all possible apps with Google. I've see Mail can be done. What are the all other possible Metro apps?

  The economics of IT is changing rapidly, and organizations are searching to widen and secure availability of their systems and at the same time lower costs which is exactly what the cloud meant to do. Running your systems on Microsoft’s Windows Azure cloud for example would improve and secure the availability, accessibility and scalability (both up and down) of your systems and support the new IT economics. However, in order to take advantage of the cloud's promise of lower cost of ownership, the applications must be built or adjusted to work on that platform and in most cases this is not a simple task.  Even existing web applications cannot always be transferred to Azure without some changes, and for client/server applications, the task is way more challenging even to the point where it seems impossible. The reason is the gaps between the client/server desktop technology and the cloud's. For that reason, most of the known methodologies to migrate existing client/server applications actually involve rewrite of the desktop systems for the cloud. A unique approach is introduced by Visual WebGui which creates a virtualization layer atop ASP.Net web server, it moves the transformed or generated .Net code to that layer, and then using a patent pending protocol it renders a user interface within a plain browser. • MDX needs a function or macro syntax

  I was having an interesting discussion with a few people about the impact of named sets on performance (the same discussion noted by Chris Webb here: http://cwebbbi.wordpress.com/2011/03/16/referencing-named-sets-in-calculations). And apparently the core of the performance issue comes down to the way named sets are materialized within the SSAS engine. Which lead me to the thought that what we really need is a syntax for declaring a non-materialized set or to take this even further a way of declaring an MDX expression as function or macro so that it can be re-used in multiple places. Because sometimes you do want the set materialised, such as when you use an ordered set for calculating rankings. But a lot of the time we just want to make our MDX modular and want to avoid having to repeat the same code over and over. • MS SQL 2000 and SSL Certificate

  I'm trying to set up a MS SQL 2000 server to use an already existing SSL certificate installed on the server. I verified that the certificate shows up in the Personal/Certificate folder of the account that is running the MSSQLSERVER service using the Certificate MMC snap-in. I also verified that the certificate for the CA is installed under the Trusted Root Certificate Authorities. Additionally, to make sure that it is using this specific certificate I created a Certificate registry value of type REG_BINARY in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib and I set it to the certificates thumbprint like it mentions in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/276553 Finally, I opened up the Server Network Utility, checked Force protocol encryption, clicked OK, and restarted the MSSQLSERVER service. Unfortunately, it fails to start and looking at the event log it's failing with: 19015: Encryption requested but no valid certificate was found. SQL Server terminating. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Where did I go wrong?

  I'm installing a 2008 instance on a 2003 machine which is already running 2005. I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. Much more info on this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910708 I've had problems with being able to add the windows service accounts to the groups at install time. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group?

• Visual Studio 2010 Modeling and Architecture Tools

  Jennifer Marsman (Microsoft Evangelist) and Cameron Skinner (Microsoft Visual Studio Product Unit Manager) recently stopped by our office while they were passing through Louisville on their tour to give us a presentation on the new Visual Studio 2010 Modeling and Architecture Tools. I checked out these new features when Visual Studio 2010 Beta versions originally rolled out and have been really impressed with this stuff ever since then. So it was pretty cool to actually learn some new techniques from Cameron himself since he helped write the actual code behind some of those features. If you've upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 recently I would highly recommend using the Architecture tools. They're awesome. If you want to make improvements to it, they even have their own SDK for it. There are plenty of blogs out there to show you how to use it. I've been waiting to find a tool that works like this where I can really analyze the code in solutions and projects and see how everything ties together. It's really handy if you're asked to work on a new project and aren't familiar with how it works. Just run the tools, analyze the DLL's, learn how everything works, and then you'll be ready to implement new code! It's a great tool to learn new systems quick and easy and it's all housed within the Visual Studio IDE. I just wanted to write a blog to brag about it a little bit, so I figured I'd throw this up here. It's a must have tool for Developers/Architects.
