• File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service won't install

  Hi all, Problem description: -I'm running Windows Server 2003 and I'm trying to install the FTP service following this procedure: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323384 -At step 7 of the above procedure I provide Windows Small Business Server 2003 disc1 and the installation completes successfully (note: the installer looks for 'ftpctrs2.dll' but the disk contains 'FTPCTRS2.DL_' and seems happy with it as per allowed file types). -However the installation silently fails because if I go back to the list of windows components, FTP is still unchecked, and if I open IIS, the FTP sites section is missing. Question: -How can I force the installation of FTP? Additional info: I don't think this is related but will mention it in case I'm wrong and it is: before I could attempt to install FTP I ran into, and fixed, the issue described in this solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838860 Thanks.

• Windows 7 Refuses To Install To A Partition

  I have 4 HDDs in my PC on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3 rev1.0 motherboard on SATA ports 0-3 and running AHCI mode. Windows 7 refuses to let me install to any partitions or disks I select saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. I will get to the bottom of this, after I sacrifice my Friday nights and weekends to Microsoft (they don't just want my money, they want my soul). Keep tuned, if no one has the answer, I will find one. I suspect I have to rip out 3 HDDs so that the n00bs at Microsoft can actually deal with spinning media. Really angers me how paid-for-products are so inferior to Linux they don't even qualify to be called "software".

• windows printer spool gets stuck with file at 64kb from linux and mac

  Hi I have two printers one on a file server with windows 2003, and other with windows XP. The thing is that when i try to print from my machine, my file stays in queue for ever, it says 64kb out of whatever the file i send. I have seen similar problems with some machines that run on Mac OS X. The windows machines apparently have no problems printing. They are not connect through active directory, just the network. In the past I have seen people install non microsoft windows Printer server on windows, i dont remember the name of any of the programs. I have being googling a lot and have not found anything to replace the microsoft print spooler service, maybe i am mistaken. Everyday I have to restart the print spooler service i even created a bat file for it. I am out of ideas here.

• Problems with undo in VS2010, I need help figuring out what is wrong

  I have been battling with my Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Express for a while now. When I undo things some times it works fine and other times it replaces lines of code I didn't touch with lines I deleted. It seems to pick targets at random and most of the time I can easily repair what it has done or just not save the changes. This problem is starting to drive me crazy. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening to me? When I was using Microsoft Visual 2012 this never happen. I have tried to search this problem with no luck so far.

  I am running a FOXCONN AM2+ M61PMV with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 windows 7 ultimate 64 bit From startup I have hit the del key and the options for enabling the Hardware virtulization are not there. I have checked the Microsoft tool that says I can run virtual and i have checked SecurAble, that says yes. But I have an open case w/microsoft (they've been trying for a week [7 tech support people later]) and they're saying that i need to ensure that the hardware is enabled. Where do I go to see? is there another way besides from the start up? HELP!

Mac partition: 36GB with Mac OS X and Microsoft Office 2011 Word, Excel & Powerpoint and Skype. (minimal use) Windows partition: 92GB with Windows 7 professional and Microsoft Office 2010 Word, Excel & Powerpoint, and Skype (daily use) Media to be kept on SD card or external USB3 drive. • Slightly off topic - How to Fix Sky Go Error [t6013-c1501] (and [t6000-c1501])

  Sky doesn't seem to understand what their own errors mean, so I cobbled together an understanding from some other posts and managed to get it working.When you see the error [t6013-c1501] instead of your TV programme in Sky Go, it seems to mean:'You registered a device, but then changed the hardware, so now I'm confused!'In other words, the Digital rights management (DRM) used between Sky Go and Silverlight stored an old fingerprint of your PC, but rather than recognising this and allowing you to remove the device, it just disappears from the 'Manage Devices' page.DISCLAIMER: Perform the following steps at your own risk. It worked for me, but I didn't care if it broke stuff. If you care....don't do it!So, to fix this I did the following:1. Login to Sky Go and click 'Watch live TV' from the home page. It will attempt to show Sky News and fail with the error [t6013-c1501].2. Right click on the error and you should see the Menu option 'Silverlight'. Select this and a dialog should appear. Click the 'Application Storage' tab and delete any entry that relates to sky go. Clcik OK to close the dialog.3. Open explorer and navigate to the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady4. Rename the file mspr.hds to mspr.hds.OLD5. Go back to the browser and click F5. You may need to logout/login (not sure).Note: Don't rename/delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady or you will get the error [t6000-c1501].   A Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)  can also be called a traditional database that uses a Structured Query Language (SQL) to provide access to stored data while insuring the integrity of the data. The data is stored in a collection of tables that is defined by relationships between data items. In addition, data permitted to be joined in new relationships. Traditional databases primarily process data through transactions called transaction processing. Transaction processing is the methodology of grouping related business operations based predefined business events. An example of this can be seen when a person attempts to purchase an item from an online e-tailor. The business must execute specific operations for a related  business event. • OpenXML error “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.”

  From time to time I ear some people saying their new web application supports data export to Excel format. So far so good … but they don’t tell the all story … in fact almost all the times what is happening is they are exporting data to a Comma-Separated file or simply exporting GridView rendered HTML to an xls file. Ok … it works but it’s not something I would be proud of. So … yesterday I decided to take a look at the Office Open XML File Formats Specification (Microsoft Office 2007+ format) based on well-known technologies: ZIP and XML. I start by installing Open XML SDK 2.0 for Microsoft Office and playing with some samples. Then I decided to try it on a more complex web application and the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” message start happening. Google show us that many people suffer from the same and it seems there are many reasons that can trigger this message. Some are related to the process itself, others with encodings or even styling. Well, none solved my problem and I had to dig … well not that much, I simply change the output file extension to zip and extract the zip content. Then I did the same to the output file from my first sample, compare both zip contents with SourceGear DiffMerge and found that my problem was Culture related. Yes, my complex application sets the Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture  to a non-English culture. For sample purposes I was simply using the ToString method to convert numbers and dates to a string representation but forgot that XML is culture invariant and thus using a decimal separator other than “.” will result in a deserialization problem. I solve the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” by using Convert.ToString(object, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) method instead of the ToString method. Hope this can help someone.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 bare metal restore to different hardware

  Scenario: I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 installation whose main disk drive is now 7 years old and showing signs of age. For the last couple of months it's been displaying increased errors and requirements to run checkdisk. I have successfully created a bare metal restore (BMR) image on a separate data drive on the server, which can be seen from the Windows Recovery console; I tested it by booting to and using the Windows Server installation DVD's recovery utilities. The BMR image includes the system drive with boot partition, system state, and the D:\ drive of the server, which is where I have followed the practice of installing any program that does not require a C:\ installation path. Therefore, the BMR includes both the C:\ and D:\ drives, system state and boot partition. The C:\ drive is a 7-year old Seagate 160GB. The D:\ drive is a rather newer 120GB Western Digital. I have purchased a 128GB solid state Samsung 830 that I want to restore these partitions to, using the BMR. Questions: In the above-referenced article, Microsoft seems to be indicating that I am only able to restore to like-kind hardware, which doesn't help at all and is difficult to believe. Is this really true? I've cleaned these drives up and minimized the size of partition they require. C:\ will need about a 70GB partition, and the data on D:\ will need about 50GB. Will Windows Server backup allow me to restore the BMR to newly-created partitions on the SSD, discarding extra space? I don't need a "how-to": I just need an "is it possible". • Resume on 30 Days of SharePoint

  Dear readers, as you might have noticed... It was an organisational desaster on my end! Even though I continued my studies and research on Microsoft SharePoint 2013 during the last 30 days, I wasn't able to write an article a day to keep you posted on my progress. Nonetheless, I gathered a good number of additional blogs, mainly SharePoint MVP sites, and online forums which will be helpful in the next couple of weeks while I'm actually going to develop a C#-based client which will enable an existing 'legacy' application to SharePoint as a document management system (DMS) besides other already existing solutions. Finding excuses Well, no. Not really. I simply didn't block any or enough time every day to write down my progress during my own challenge. My log book on learning about SharePoint stands at 41 hours and 15 minutes during this month. Which means that I spent an average of more than 1 hour per day on getting into SharePoint. I know that might sound a little bit low but also keep in mind that I went for the challenge on top of my daily job and private responsibilities. During the same period there had been two priority 0 incidents from clients - external root cause - which took presedence over this leisure project. More to come Anyway, it was a first trial and despite the low level of reporting on my blog, I'm confident about what I learned during the last 30 days, and I'm ready to implement the client's requirements. At least, I would say that I have a better understanding about the road map or the path to walk during the next month. As time and secrecy allows I'm going to note down some bits and pieces... During the process of development, I'm going to 'cheat' on the challenge summary article and add links to those new entries. Just for the sake of completeness. Next challenge? Hmm, there had been ideas during the last meetup of the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC) regarding certifications in IT and eventually we might organise some kind of a study group for specific exams, most probably Microsoft exams towards MCSD Web Developer or Windows Developer.

• Cannot install VS Team System 2008 on Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)

  I am trying to install VS TS 2008 on W7 Ultimate (64bit), but I have run into errors during the setup. Please take note that I have tried to mount the iso to a virtual drive, and also extracted the iso contents to a local folder. Both methods have failed and produce the same error log below. [10/26/09,03:02:40] Runtime Pre-requisites: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Runtime Pre-requisites. MSI returned error code 1603 [10/26/09,03:02:42] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Runtime Pre-requisites is not installed. [10/26/09,03:02:42] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 64bit Prerequisites (x64) was not attempted to be installed. And the list goes on and on.. This is a fresh install of W7, and I have not installed Microsoft Office 2007 at all yet, not sure if it would be causing my errors right now.. I appreciate any help I can get thank you.

• How can I unify my email, calendar and tasks (2 exchange accounts + 1 gmail)

  This is my situation: I work as a consultant, and thus work out of multiple computers: my work-laptop a desktop at my primary client my desktop at home an android smartphone an android tablet Likewise, I have multiple accounts: A Microsoft Exchange (2010 AFAIK) account A Microsoft Exchange (2007 AFAIK) account A gmail account The most important thing I need is the ability to have events in one calendar affect the free / busy status of all other accounts (so that if I am busy on Monday 9am with an event from my employer's account, it will show that time as busy in my client's account, and in the gmail account. Second thing I need is a unified view of all of my accounts' info: Appointments, email, tasks, and contacts (in that order of importance). I've already tried outlook synchronization tools such as gSyncit, to sync both exchange accounts with gmail, but this creates a mess when updating appointments (deleted appointments sometimes return, timestamps revert). Is there perhaps some way to at least synchronize the free/busy state in a way that all of my calendar apps / accounts will look there to see if I can be invited? Or do I have to use WMI-Object/WebAdministration? If so, could some one give me some quick instructions on doing some simple "get info" commands in Powershell to a remote IIS6 machine?   In the accepted answer to this question, it is described how to make a shortcut for any Metro app, which you can then place in the startup folder. I'm close to doing the same, but with the Skype app: My attempt at making the Skype Metro app start up with windows: By making a shortcut, Skype.url, which points to "skype:", and placing it under the path, "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup", one can make the Skype app start up along with Windows. This shortcut will start up the Skype app, however, if the app is not already running, the app will hang when starting up. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Am I using the wrong shortcut, or do I perhaps need to supply it with some arguments?

• Why does IIS refuse to serve ASP.NET content?

  My Windows Server 2003 Std server refuses to server ASP.NET content. It serves regular html just fine but anything .net, even a one line html file with an ASPX extention fails silently. Things I've tried: Nothing in the event log or IIS WWW logs when it fails. Fiddler shows no response I reinstalled .NET with C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727aspnet_regiis.exe -U C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727aspnet_regiis.exe -I I give obscenely high permissions on everything I can think of (full control, read, write, etc.) to all possibly relevant users (IUSER*, ASP.NET, etc.). I confirmed that ASP.Net v1 and v2 Web Service Extensions are "allowed" in IIS Confirmed that the Server Manager had IIS and ASP.Net roles enabled Again: this is the scenario: http://localhost/Test/Default.htm <-- Works great! http://localhost/Test/Default.aspx <-- Bombs silently with no message at all Any guidance will be much appreciated! • Alternatives to time tracking methodologies [closed]

  Question first: What are some feasible alternatives to time tracking for employees in a web/software development company, and why are they better options Explanation: I work at a company where we work like this. Everybody is paid salary. We have 3 types of work, Contract, Adhoc and Internal (Non billable). Adhoc is just small changes that take a few hours and we just bill the client at the end of the month. Contracts are signed and we have this big long process, the usual. We figure out how much to charge by getting an estimation of the time involved (From the design and the developers), multiplying it by our hourly rate and that's it. So say we estimate 50 hours for a website. We have time tracking software and have to record the time in 15 we spend on it (7:00 to 7:15 for example), the project name, and give it some comments. Now if we go over the 50 hours, we are both losing money and are inefficient. Now that I've explained how the system works, my question is how else can it be done if a better method exists (Which I'm sure one must). Nobody here likes the current system, we just can't find an alternative. I'd be more than willing to work after hours longer hours on a project to get it done in time, but I'm much inclined to do so with the current system. I'd love to be able to sum up (Or link) to this post for my manager to show them why we should use abc system instead of this system.

• How to back up OWA exchange emails without Outlook

  My university uses Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) e-mail. Soon they will close my e-mail account as my course has ended, but I really do not want to lose the archive of emails and attachments. I've read a backup to something called a .pst can be made if one has access to Microsoft Outlook but I do not. Is there any other way I could back these up? (preferably on Ubuntu 12.04 but I also have access to Win 7 if need be). One idea I played with is using davmail to allow access via Thunderbird and performing some kind of backup with that. However, I cannot seem to get past Authentication failed: invalid user or password, retry with domain\user.

Personally I love IE for many reasons such as ease of use and stability.  I am cranked up to see what IE 9 does as it was retooled from the start. So this one should be big. • Been doing .NET for several years and am thinking about a platform change. Where do people suggest I go?

  Hi, I've been programming in .NET for several years now and am thinking maybe its time to do a platform switch. Any suggestions about which platform would be the best to learn? I've been thinking about going back to C++ development or just focusing on T-SQL within the Microsoft stack. I'm thinking of switching because: a) I feel that the .NET platform is increasingly becoming commodified--meaning that its more about learning a GUI and certain things to click around than really understanding programming. I'm concerned that this will lend itself to making developers on that stack increasingly paid less. b) It's very frustrating to spend your entire day essentially debugging something that should work but doesn't. Usually, Microsoft releases something that suggests anyone can just click here and there and poof there's your application. Most of the time it doesn't work and winds up sucking so much more time than it was supposed to save. c) I recently led a team in a small startup to build a WPF application. We were really hit hard with people complaining about having to download the runtime. Our code was also not portable to any other platform. Added to which, the ram usage and slowness to load of the app was remarkable for its size. I researched it and we could not find a way to optimize it. d) I'm a little concerned about being wedded to the Windows platform. What are the pros and cons of adding another platform and which platform do people suggest? Thanks!

Those client may only have cd/dvd and might not have internet access, etc. So I need a free 'WinHlp32.exe compatible' replacement for our redistribution under vista and windows 7. • Does SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Activity Monitor work with SQL Server 2000?

  I am trying to use SQL Server Management Studio 2008's Activity Monitor with an SQL Server 2000 instance to diagnose some query performance issues. I can connect SMSS 2008 to the db fine, and use it to browse objects and run queries. But when I press the Activity Monitor button, it pops up an error message saying: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This operation does not support connections to Microsoft SQL Server Personal Edition version 8.00.818. This MSDN article implies that Activity Monitor works with SQL Server 2000. Is it the fact that it's Personal Edition that's preventing it from working? The error message isn't clear whether it's the edition or version that's the problem.

• Altering specific configuration values in the On-Screen Keyboard of Windows 7

  I have to use the On-Screen Keyboard of Windows 7 for typing: (In case you haven't used it yet, you can get it via: All Programs - Accessories - Ease of Access - On-Screen Keyboard or simply search for "osk.exe") It offers a feature to "hover" about the buttons. Microsoft describes it as the following: In hovering mode, you use a mouse or joystick to point to a key for a predefined period of time, and the selected character is typed automatically. There is my specific problem. The predefined period of time is too long to be useful for me. The minimum amount of time is 0.5 seconds (max. 3 seconds). Is there any way to alter this value to something < 0.5? For example via editing the registry? Edit: The entry *'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Osk\HoverPeriod'* cannot be set lower than 500 ms. Any helpful tip would be great!
