• Is it a bad idea to list every function/method argument on a new line and why?

  I work with someone who, every time they call a function they put the arguments on a new line e.g. aFunction( byte1, short1, int1, int2, int3, int4, int5 ) ; I find this very annoying as it means the code isn't very compact, so I have to scan up and down more to actually make any sense of the logic. I'm interested to know whether this is actually bad practice and if so, how can I persuade them not to do it?

  Hello. I already found similar question here on SO, but almost all the answers were more philosophical, then practical. I'd like You to share some of Your PRACTICAL ideas about how to make my course more interesting. It doesn't matter how much effort it takes from me. I even thought about trying to motivate them to pick some topic in the beginning of the course and to work on it as some kind of real, small, startup project that they could maybe financially exploit once it's finished. But I'm afraid that most of them will not get the project to the end, and that it could be boring to them working on one thing all year long. Also I thought about involving them in Torcs, but I'm afraid most of them wouldn't be up to the task. Btw, Torcs is Car Racing Simulation, but there's an API for developers so they can develop their own AI for the driver, and then race their cars against the other programmer's AI's. I'm not asking here for problem examples, as I asked a separate question about that. I need ideas about making my lectures more interesting and fun.

  I have an object with a method that returns a filehandle, and I want to read from that handle. The following doesn't work, because the right angle bracket of the method call is interpreted as the closing angle bracket of the input reader: my $input = <$object->get_handle()>; That gets parsed as: my $input = ( < $object- > ) get_handle() >; which is obviously a syntax error. Is there any way I can perform a method call within an angle operator, or do I need to break it into two steps like this? my $handle = $object->get_handle(); my $input = <$handle>;

• Hibernate Lazy init exception in spring scheduled job

  I have a spring scheduled job (@Scheduled) that sends emails from my system according to a list of recipients in the DB. This method is annotated with the @Scheduled annotation and it invokes a method from another interface, the method in the interface is annotated with the @Transactional annotation. Now, when i invoke the scheduled method manually, it works perfectly. But when the method is invoked by spring scheduler i get the LazyInitFailed exception in the method implementing the said interface. But what if you want to remove the binding for E in modB? I can't seem to find a way to do this without having to break the bind for E into a separate module. Is there a way?

  I am trying to implement JUnit tests for a class that performs DB queries using Hibernate. When I create the class under test, I get access to the session through the factory by doing the following: InitialContext context = new InitialContext(); sessionFactory = (SessionFactory) context.lookup(hibernateContext); This works fine when I deploy this to JBoss 5.1. I am trying to figure out how to get this to work with my JUnit test. I keep getting an exception stating that I "Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial". I've searched high and low but haven't been able to find any information about what specifically I need to do to get this to work. I am not using Spring or any frameworks, just plain old Java and JUnit.

• jQuery Selectors: how to access an a tag, whose span has a specific class?

  I'm messing around with FullCalendar jQuery calendar, and qTips, so that I can display more information about the event upon mouseover. I've added a summary element to the FullCalendar js, and also my server code. I then added a new qTip in the eventMouseover method, based on the span class, which works prefectly. However, if the event stretches over a couple of days, the qTip only works (because it is a span tag), on the text itself, not the entire blue strip. What I want to do is to assign the qTip to the a tag, and make the a tags display block. This works currently: eventMouseover: function(event){ $('span[class=fc-event-title]').each(function() { if( $(this).text() == event.title ) { $(this).qtip({ content: event.summary, style: { border: { width: 1, radius: 5, color: '#6699CC' }, width: 200 } }); } }); but I can't figure out how to select the a tag where it contains a span with class of fc-event-title.   I faced a problem recently with a 3rd party library which generates classes from a xml. Here is a gist of it: class B; class A { void doSomething(); friend class B; }; class B { void doSomething(); void doSomethingMore() { doSomething(); } }; The compiler flags call to the function doSomething() as ambiguous and flags it as an compiler error. It is easy to understand why it gives the error.Class B being friend of class A, every member of class B has access to all the members of class A. Renaming of the either of functions resolved my problem but it got me thinking that shouldn't in this case the compiler should give a priority to the class's own member function over the function in another class of which it is a friend?

In the main view, I have an object "Person", with 3 different IDs. Depending on certain conditions (let say, time of the day), I have to choose one of them and display it in the cell. My question is, should the main view pass the whole object to the table, and this one to the cell, and the cell will calculate the ID that it will be shown? or, The main view calculates this parameter, and send the result to the table and this to the cell? Is a question focused on OO design, which one of this approaches is more suitable in an OO design and why?

  Researching specificity I stumbled upon this blog - http://www.htmldog.com/guides/cssadvanced/specificity/ It states that specificity is a point-scoring system for CSS. It tells us that elements are worth 1 point, classes are worth 10 points and IDs are worth 100 points. It also goes on top say that these points are totaled and the overall amount is that selector's specificity. • How do I add a reference to a Web Application Project in an Associated Class Library?

  I'm working on an internet application that has been set up as a web SITE project (I know...) in Visual Studio. I need to add additional features/functionality so have added a class library to the project and referred to it in the main web site project. The issue now arises because I need to make use of core objects which live inside the App_Code directory in the web site project but this project doesn't appear to expose its DLL like web app/ code library projects do. Because of this I can't add a reference to the web site project in the class library to leverage the common site-wide code/objects. I can't move the stuff out of App_Code so I'm looking for a way to refer to the website project dll from the new class library. Can anyone suggest a workaround? All help v. gratefully received :-)

And the next time I save, the validation happens again - and when I change the value even if the validation is OK, then the context is again dirtied, and revalidated again - and I change the value, and Core Data validates, again, because the context is dirtied. And so on...for ever... is that right? Or did they try to say something different?

  I think today's typical/traditional 3-5 days developer training classes aren't so great, as you tend to forget half of it shortly after. It's too much one way communication and not enough interaction. Also brain research has shown that this kind of setup is usually not optimal for efficient learning. For clarification, I am referring to professional, commercial, paid classes. However this could also be applied for any kind of studies. How could the ultimate developer training package be setup to really make sure you learn what you are supposed to learn? Would that be more: Multimedia? Exercises? Homeworks? Spread out over time instead of 3-5 compact days? Group projects?

It's like a global library which I included Zend library, Doctrine ORM, JQuery, Blueprint CSS, etc. Then I set the include path. Nothing wrong. The problem is: I'd like to have also a global bootstrap class inside the library folder and an individual bootstrap class on each project I create for individual use. I don't know how to set more than 1 bootstrap class. Is it possible?

  In my Application I have a static method that is called from multiple threads at the same time. Is there any danger of my data being mixed up? In my first attempt the method was not static and I was creating multiple instance of the class. In that case my data got mixed up somehow. I am not sure how this happens because it only happens sometimes. I am still debugging. But now the method is static on I have no problems so far. Maybe it's just luck. I don't know for sure.

  Suppose I have a set of PFObjects (essentially dictionaries) of class "myObject". Objects of this class contain for key "myDictionary" a dictionary. "myDictionary", in turn, has a key "myKey" that I want to access and search for matches against "mySearchTerm". I don't want to download all myObject objects and then iterate through them to check myKey in each, because that would be very inefficient. I want to use a findObjects message to return just the matches. Is such a query possible? In other words, how can I search the values in a dictionary that is assigned to a key for a PFObject without downloading all PFObjects of that class? Here's what it might look like if there were a simple method for it, but I made up the containsKey part to clarify what I am contemplating: PFQuery *objectQuery = [PFQuery queryWithClassName:@"myObject"]; [objectQuery whereKey:@"myDictionary" ~containsKey~:@"myKey" equalTo:"mySearchTerm"];

I know jQuery is capable of inserting a comment into a div area but i am having problems finding an example like that with fading in. • Better Java method Syntax? Return early or late? [closed]

  Duplicate: Should a function have only one return statement? and Single return or multiple return statements? Often times you might have a method that checks numerous conditions and returns a status (lets say boolean for now). Is it better to define a flag, set it during the method, and return it at the end : boolean validate(DomainObject o) { boolean valid = false; if (o.property == x) { valid = true; } else if (o.property2 == y) { valid = true; } ... return valid; } or is it better/more correct to simply return once you know the method's outcome? boolean validate(DomainObject o) { if (o.property == x) { return true; } else if (o.property2 == y) { return true; } ... return false; } Now obviously there could be try/catch blocks and all other kinds of conditions, but I think the concept is clear. Opinions?

• Is it safe to call a function to intialize a class in a ctor list?

  I have Angle class that I want initialized to a random value. The Angle constructor can accept an int from a random() function. Is it safe to place this call in the ctor list: foo::foo() : Angle(random(0xFFFF)) {...} or do I have to do it in the body of the constructor? foo::foo() { Angle = Angle(random(0xFFFF)); ...} If it matters, the foo class is derived from another class and does have virtual methods. In addition, no exception handling is allowed in our app.

• Error in my OO Generics design. How do I workaround it?

  I get "E2511 Type parameter 'T' must be a class type" on the third class. type TSomeClass=class end; ParentParentClass<T>=class end; ParentClass<T: class> = class(ParentParentClass<T>) end; ChildClass<T: TSomeClass> = class(ParentClass<T>) end; I'm trying to write a lite Generic Array wrapper for any data type(ParentParentClass) ,but because I'm unable to free type idenitifiers( if T is TObject then Tobject(T).Free) , I created the second class, which is useful for class types, so I can free the objects. The third class is where I use my wrapper, but the compiler throws that error. How do I make it compile?
