• Recommended (remote) backup technique for SQL Compact?

  Hello. Is there a generally recommended approach to backing up an SQL CE/SQLite database over the Internet? The client source is .NET/Windows based, the backup destination runs Ubuntu. I am using a small SQL CE database and have been trying to figure out the most reasonable approach to doing this. The file size (in terms of transfer time/bandwidth) isn't a big deal. I had a look around, and so far the things I've given thought are: Online backup services (Dropbox, Mozy) Opening an FTP/SFTP connection Writing a custom protocol with public/private keys Unsure regarding #1 because I doubt they would like it if somebody transferred gigabytes of data using a POST; and they do not seem to offer native (or .NET) APIs. FTP/SFTP seems risky in terms of security and privileges (as the password/key would need to be stored on the client side). With the right user group/user privileges this may work. Custom protocol seems overkill, which is why I am hoping somebody has already defined a reasonable API for language/platform-independent backups over the Internet. Any hints S.O.?

  Yes, from searching I can see this has been asked time and time again. Here's a backstory. I'm an individual hobbyist developer with zero budget. A program I've been developing has been in need of constant bugfixes, and me and users are getting tired of having to manually update. Me, because my current solution of Manually FTP to my website Update a file "newest.txt" with the newest version Update index.html with a link to the newest version Hope for people to see the "there's an update" message Have them manually download the update sucks, and whenever I screw up an update, I get pitchforks. Users, because, well, "Are you ever going to implement auto-update?" "Will there ever be an auto-update feature?" Over the past I have looked into: WinSparkle - No in-app updates, and the DLL is 500 KB. My current solution is a few KBs in the executable and has no in-app updates. http://windowsclient.net/articles/appupdater.aspx - I can't comprehend the documentation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/vb/Auto_Update_Revisited.aspx - Doesn't appear to support anything other than working with files that aren't in use wyUpdate - wyBuild isn't free, and the file specification is simply too complex. ClickOnce - Workarounds for implementing launching on startup are massive, horrendous and not worth it for such a simple feature. And then I think about Sparkle... EDIT: I came across SparkleDotNET just then. Looks good, though the DLL is 200 KB. Don't know if that's really that big of an issue, though.

• Publishing my Website to my Local Disk Causes Exceptions to show Paths including my Local Disk

  I've published my website many times. But didn't think about this though until I came across this issue. So I decided to publish my WAP project to a local folder on my C drive first. Then used FTP to upload it to my shared host on discountasp.net. I noticed during runtime that the stack trace was referencing that local folder still and erroring out. Anyone know what config settings are affected when publishing? Obviously something is still pointing to my local C drive and I've searched my entire solution and don't see why. • Stream Reuse in C#

  I've been playing around with what I thought was a simple idea. I want to be able to read in a file from somewhere (website, filesystem, ftp), perform some operations on it (compress, encrypt, etc.) and then save it somewhere (somewhere may be a filesystem, ftp, or whatever). It's a basic pipeline design. What I would like to do is to read in the file and put it onto a MemoryStream, then perform the operations on the data in the MemoryStream, and then save that data in the MemoryStream somewhere. I was thinking I could use the same Stream to do this but run into a couple of problems: Everytime I use a StreamWriter or StreamReader I need to close it and that closes the stream so that I cannot use it anymore. That seems like there must be some way to get around that. Some of these files may be big and so I may run out of memory if I try to read the whole thing in at once. I was hoping to be able to spin up each of the steps as separate threads and have the compression step begin as soon as there is data on the stream, and then as soon as the compression has some compressed data available on the stream I could start saving it (for example). Is anything like this easily possible with the C# Streams? ANyone have thoughts as to how to accomplish this best? Thanks, Mike

• What is the best IDE setup for web development?

  I am starting a little side project which consists of building a small-medium sized, django-based, website. However, last time I was actually in the business of websites, was a few good years ago. So while still technologically capable, I'm still rusted on the tools/IDE part of websites. I am looking for an IDE which can support the following: Basic HTML editing with syntax completion, highlighting, etc... Basic CSS editing with syntax completion, highlighting, etc... Python support for Django Support for the entire develop-debug-FTP upload cycle If all of this could happen inside my existing eclipse installation, it would be nothing short of perfection. So what's your recommendation on web development IDEs? EDIT: forgot to add that I'm running Win XP on my dev machine. EDIT after answers: thanks all you guys for the helpful advice. I think I'm going to go with Aptana as it fits in to eclipse which I already use. Also I will look into version control instead of simple FTP upload. Apparently I didn't know how much it is used even in web projects.

• Using Qt signals/slots instead of a worker thread

  I am using Qt and wish to write a class that will perform some network-type operations, similar to FTP/HTTP. The class needs to connect to lots of machines, one after the other but I need the applications UI to stay (relatively) responsive during this process, so the user can cancel the operation, exit the application, etc. My first thought was to use a separate thread for network stuff but the built-in Qt FTP/HTTP (and other) classes apparently avoid using threads and instead rely on signals and slots. So, I'd like to do something similar and was hoping I could do something like this: class Foo : public QObject { Q_OBJECT public: void start(); signals: void next(); private slots: void nextJob(); }; void Foo::start() { ... connect(this, SIGNAL(next()), this, SLOT(nextJob())); emit next(); } void Foo::nextJob() { // Process next 'chunk' if (workLeftToDo) { emit next(); } } void Bar::StartOperation() { Foo* foo = new Foo; foo->start(); } However, this doesn't work and UI freezes until all operations have completed. I was hoping that emitting signals wouldn't actually call the slots immediately but would somehow be queued up by Qt, allowing the main UI to still operate. So what do I need to do in order to make this work? How does Qt achieve this with the multitude of built-in classes that appear to perform lengthy tasks on a single thread?

  Dear all, I have a following question. I have to generate many files based on sql query. Let's say for example, I have get from database a list of orders made today and genarate file for each order and later store each file on ftp. Ideally I would like to get follewing. Not quite sure how to get it. from(MyBean).to(Ftp) The problem and main question is how to generate multiple messages by custom bean (for example). I am not sure if splitter EIP is ok in this case because in my case I have not just one message to split, but I just have to generate and send many messages. http://camel.apache.org/splitter.html I hope, someone meet this problem before. If the task will be to generate just one file - everything is quite simple - you need just fill Exchange.OutMessage (or something like this). • R: Why does read.table stop reading a file?

  I have a file, called genes.txt, which I'd like to become a data.frame. It's got a lot of lines, each line has three, tab delimited fields: mike$ wc -l genes.txt 42476 genes.txt I'd like to read this file into a data.frame in R. I use the command read.table, like this: genes = read.table( genes_file, sep="\t", na.strings="-", fill=TRUE, col.names=c("GeneSymbol","synonyms","description") ) Which seems to work fine, where genes_file points at genes.txt. However, the number of lines in my data.frame is significantly less than the number of lines in my text file: > nrow(genes) [1] 27896 and things I can find in the text file: mike$ grep "SELL" genes.txt SELL CD62L|LAM1|LECAM1|LEU8|LNHR|LSEL|LYAM1|PLNHR|TQ1 selectin L don't seem to be in the data.frame > grep("SELL",genes$GeneSymbol) integer(0) it turns out that genes = read.delim( genes_file, header=FALSE, na.strings="-", fill=TRUE, col.names=c("GeneSymbol","synonyms","description"), ) works just fine. Why does read.delim work when read.table not? If it's of use, you can recreate genes.txt using the following commands which you should run from a command line curl -O ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene/DATA/gene_info.gz gzip -cd gene_info.gz | awk -Ft '$1==9606{print $3 "\t" $5 "\t" $9}' > genes.txt be warned, though, that gene_info.gz is 101MBish.

• Making pygtksourceview work in windows

  So, I'm trying to get gtksourceview python bindings work under windows (I'm developing a cross platform gtk application that shows code, so gtksourceview seemed like a natural choice). I have pygtk installed and working (I followed the instructions in http://www.pygtk.org/downloads.html) I tried the instructions in http://projects.gnome.org/gtksourceview/ for gtksourceview. Here is what I did: Downloaded and extracted the latest gtksourceview window binaries from: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/gtksourceview/2.10/gtksourceview-2.10.0.zip The website said gtksourceview needs libxml, so I downloaded and extracted the latest libxml window binaries from: http://xmlsoft.org/sources/win32/libxml2-2.7.6.win32.zip Added the folders containing dll files to the PATH (in my computer they were c:\opt\gtksourceview\bin; C:\opt\libxml2-2.7.6.win32\bin) Installed pygtksourceview with the windows installer: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/pygtksourceview/2.10/pygtksourceview-2.10.0.win32-py2.6.exe Renamed the file libxml2.dll to libxml2-2.dll (after running depends on the gtksourceview dll) Now, the gtksouceview widget seems to work, until I'm trying to set the code's language. When I do that python crashes. • Inner join on 2 arrays?

  I'm trying to find a solution to the following (I'm thinking with Linq) to the following: I need to pull down certain files from a larger list of files on an ftp server that have a similar file name. For example, we send an order file to some company for processing then they return a response file that we can download. So, I could send them the files "order_123.txt" and "order_456.txt". After a certain amount of time I need to go look for and download the responses for those files that will be named "order_123.resp" and "order_456.resp". The kicker is that in some cases I can have multiple responses in which case they would create "order_123-1.resp" and "order_123-2.resp" and also the files don't get removed from the server. I know this can be accomplished by looping through the files I know I need responses to then loop through all the files on the server until I find files that match but I'm hoping that I don't have to loop through the files on the server more than once. This example may help clarify: I've sent "order_222.txt" and "order_333.txt" they processed them and the ftp server contains: "order_111-1.resp" "order_001.resp" "order_222-1.resp" "order_222-2.resp" "order_333.resp" I need to download the 3rd, 4th, and 5th file. • Travelling Visual Studio developers

  Hi, I am about to travel to Europe (I'm Australian but imagine this is a similar circumstance for US users and simply flipped for European users). However, there is the slim possibility I will need to do some Visual Studio work while I'm travelling. As I see it I have three options: Leave a desktop PC on at home, access remotely via net cafes. Carry a laptop with me on the trip, upload files as required using public wifi. Option 2 but instead buy cheap light netbook that is miraculously capable of running VS. Does anyone have any experience or advice to shed on any of these options? For reference, this existing post suggests that VS remotely for short distances is okay, but over longer distances could be more problematic. I've used VS via RDP to a US server before and it was pretty laggy but for small changes I could get by. Concerns I have that you may have some experience with: Weight of luggage (ideally like to travel light) Security of laptop (imagine it'll be too heavy to carry around all the time so have to leave it at hotel/hostel etc. and hope for the best) Security of data (don't want someone stealing RDP access to my home PC) Security of FTP (don't want someone stealing FTP passwords over wireless)

  I am having a strange problem while doing ssh. I am not sure where the term Unmatched ` is coming from. But when I open the file, nothing is there.

• How to remove a "green screen" portrait background

  I'm looking for a way to automatically remove (=make transparent) a "green screen" portrait background from a lot of pictures. My own attempts this far have been... ehum... less successful. I'm looking around for any hints or solutions or papers on the subject. Commercial solutions are just fine, too. And before you comment and say that it is impossible to do this automatically: no it isn't. There actually exists a company which offers exactly this service, and if I fail to come up with a different solution we're going to use them. The problem is that they guard their algorithm with their lives, and therefore won't sell/license their software. Instead we have to FTP all pictures to them where the processing is done and then we FTP the result back home. (And no, they don't have an underpaid staff hidden away in the Philippines which handles this manually, since we're talking several thousand pictures a day...) However, this approach limits its usefulness for several reasons. So I'd really like a solution where this could be done instantly while being offline from the internet.

• Is it legal to take sealed .NET framework class source and extend it?

  To be short, I'm giving very specific example, but I'm interested in general situation. There is a FtpWebRequest class in .NET framework and it is missing some of new FTP operations, like MFCT. It is ok in a sense that this operation is still in draft mode, but it is not ok in a sense, that FtpWebRequest is sealed and there's no other way (at least I don't see it) to extend it with this new operation. Easiest way to do it would be take FtpWebRequest class source from .NET reference sources and extend it, in such way will be kept all the consistence in naming, implementation, etc. Question is how much legal it is? I won't sell this class as a product, I can publish my changes on web - nothing to hide here. If it is not legal, can I take this class source from mono and include in native .net project? Did you had similar case and how you solved it? Update: as long as extension method is offered, I'm pasting source from .NET framework which should show that extension methods are not the solution. • PHP transfer files from server to server in LAN

  So, I have 5-6 pages of requirements. I'm trying to build this application in PHP based on the requirements. I want to transfer files from one server to the other server in LAN, and then send a shell command to the other server to find out if the file has been transferred successfully. In php, I can transfer files using FTP, and send shell commands using SSH. Using the methods above, I will need to open connection to the server first, but I don't know the ftp server name, domain name, ip address, or anything like that. I only know the the server ID (I'm not sure what this ID is, but I guess it is like the computer's name). An example of the server ID is: "c23bap234" How do I open a connection with just that server ID? These servers are in the same building, have LAN connection, don't have connection to the outside world. These machines have PHP, Apache, ... installed. If my post doesn't make sense to you, it's because I'm a learner. I hope someone can help me on this. Thanks in advance.

• Data Integration Solution?

  At my company we have a number of data feeds and processing that run on any given day. The number of feeds and processing steps is starting to out-number the ability to manage it ad-hoc as it is managed currently. Is there a good solution that helps with logging and managing/scheduling dependencies? For example: A: When file x is FTP dropped into directory D1, kick off processing step B B: Load flat file into DB1 C: When file y is FTP dropped into directory D2, kick off processing Step D D: Load flat file into DB11 E: When B and D are done, churn through the data, and load new data into DB111. F: When Step E is done, launch application process P G: etc... I want those steps to run at the appropriate times, not to mention if B fails, there's no reason to run steps E & F, but I could still run C & D. When I re-run B successfully, it should trigger just E & F to re-run, not C & D. We're a .NET/C#/Sql Server shop, and I'm already familiar with SSIS. Is that really the best there is? That manages steps well, but not external dependencies, or logging. Open source (.NET) preferred, but not required.

• Mandatory profile on Terminal server fails to load. Userenv.log debug

  Hi, We're having a lot of corrupted profiles lately on our profile share. At the moment I have no clue why, but I decided to switch to one mandatory profile since the users can all use the same and there is no need to have seperate profiles for each user. Here's what I did. I logged into the Terminal server with a new user and configured some stuff (imported certificates and a few files). Then I logged out. Later as admin I copied the profile to another server and renamed it to bsilo. I made sure the user hive settings were adjusted. Everyone had access to the hive. I shared the bsilo folder with full access for everyone. I set the NTFS permissions to read, read & execute, list folder contents for domain users. I also renamed NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.MAN. Now I set a env variable %manprofile% on the Terminal server that points to \server\bsilo\ntuser.man I set the env var as terminal services profile path for a test user. When I log in I as the user get the following output The system cannot find the path specified. Can somebody point me in the right direction. • Unable to install Xdebug

  I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up?   Razor View Engine The Razor view engine is a new view engine option for ASP.NET MVC that supports the Razor templating syntax. The Razor syntax is a streamlined approach to HTML templating designed with the goal of being a code driven minimalist templating approach that builds on existing C#, VB.NET and HTML knowledge. The result of this approach is that Razor views are very lean and do not contain unnecessary constructs that get in the way of you and your code. ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 only supports C# Razor views which use the .cshtml file extension. VB.NET support will be enabled in later releases of ASP.NET MVC 3. For more information and examples, see Introducing “Razor” – a new view engine for ASP.NET on Scott Guthrie’s blog. Dynamic View and ViewModel Properties A new dynamic View property is available in views, which provides access to the ViewData object using a simpler syntax. For example, imagine two items are added to the ViewData dictionary in the Index controller action using code like the following: public ActionResult Index() {          ViewData["Title"] = "The Title";          ViewData["Message"] = "Hello World!"; } Those properties can be accessed in the Index view using code like this: <h2>View.Title</h2> <p>View.Message</p> There is also a new dynamic ViewModel property in the Controller class that lets you add items to the ViewData dictionary using a simpler syntax. ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 provides the following hooks for locating services and injecting dependencies: - Creating controller factories. - Creating controllers and setting dependencies. - Setting dependencies on view pages for both the Web Form view engine and the Razor view engine (for types that derive from ViewPage, ViewUserControl, ViewMasterPage, WebViewPage). - Setting dependencies on action filters. Using a Dependency Injection container is not required in order for ASP.NET MVC 3 to function properly. Global Filters ASP.NET MVC 3 allows you to register filters that apply globally to all controller action methods. Adding a filter to the global filters collection ensures that the filter runs for all controller requests. To register an action filter globally, you can make the following call in the Application_Start method in the Global.asax file: GlobalFilters.Filters.Add(new MyActionFilter()); The source of global action filters is abstracted by the new IFilterProvider interface, which can be registered manually or by using Dependency Injection. This allows you to provide your own source of action filters and choose at run time whether to apply a filter to an action in a particular request. New JsonValueProviderFactory Class The new JsonValueProviderFactory class allows action methods to receive JSON-encoded data and model-bind it to an action-method parameter. This is useful in scenarios such as client templating. Client templates enable you to format and display a single data item or set of data items by using a fragment of HTML. ASP.NET MVC 3 lets you connect client templates easily with an action method that both returns and receives JSON data. Support for .NET Framework 4 Validation Attributes and IvalidatableObject The ValidationAttribute class was improved in the .NET Framework 4 to enable richer support for validation. When you write a custom validation attribute, you can use a new IsValid overload that provides a ValidationContext instance. This instance provides information about the current validation context, such as what object is being validated. This change enables scenarios such as validating the current value based on another property of the model. The following example shows a sample custom attribute that ensures that the value of PropertyOne is always larger than the value of PropertyTwo: public class CompareValidationAttribute : ValidationAttribute {     protected override ValidationResult IsValid(object value,              ValidationContext validationContext) {         var model = validationContext.ObjectInstance as SomeModel;         if (model.PropertyOne > model.PropertyTwo) {            return ValidationResult.Success;         }         return new ValidationResult("PropertyOne must be larger than PropertyTwo");     } } Validation in ASP.NET MVC also supports the .NET Framework 4 IValidatableObject interface. This interface is designed to be independent of the underlying implementation; therefore, where you implement the interface depends on the validation framework in use. For example, for the default data annotations-based validator, the interface would be applied on the validation attribute. Support for .NET Framework 4 Metadata Attributes ASP.NET MVC 3 now supports .NET Framework 4 metadata attributes such as DisplayAttribute. New IMetadataAware Interface The new IMetadataAware interface allows you to write attributes that simplify how you can contribute to the ModelMetadata creation process. Before this interface was available, you needed to write a custom metadata provider in order to have an attribute provide extra metadata. This interface is consumed by the AssociatedMetadataProvider class, so support for the IMetadataAware interface is automatically inherited by all classes that derive from that class (notably, the DataAnnotationsModelMetadataProvider class). New Action Result Types In ASP.NET MVC 3, the Controller class includes two new action result types and corresponding helper methods. HttpNotFoundResult Action The new HttpNotFoundResult action result is used to indicate that a resource requested by the current URL was not found. The status code is 404. This class derives from HttpStatusCodeResult. The Controller class includes an HttpNotFound method that returns an instance of this action result type, as shown in the following example: public ActionResult List(int id) {     if (id < 0) {                 return HttpNotFound();     }     return View(); } HttpStatusCodeResult Action The new HttpStatusCodeResult action result is used to set the response status code and description. Permanent Redirect The HttpRedirectResult class has a new Boolean Permanent property that is used to indicate whether a permanent redirect should occur. A permanent redirect uses the HTTP 301 status code. Corresponding to this change, the Controller class now has several methods for performing permanent redirects: - RedirectPermanent - RedirectToRoutePermanent - RedirectToActionPermanent These methods return an instance of HttpRedirectResult with the Permanent property set to true. Breaking Changes The order of execution for exception filters has changed for exception filters that have the same Order value. In ASP.NET MVC 2 and earlier, exception filters on the controller with the same Order as those on an action method were executed before the exception filters on the action method. This would typically be the case when exception filters were applied without a specified order Order value. In MVC 3, this order has been reversed in order to allow the most specific exception handler to execute first. As in earlier versions, if the Order property is explicitly specified, the filters are run in the specified order. Known Issues When you are editing a Razor view (CSHTML file), the Go To Controller menu item in Visual Studio will not be available, and there are no code snippets.

  Recently we upgraded the server from 12.04 LTS server to 13.04. All was well, including after a reboot. With all packages updated we began to see a strange issue, ssh works for a day or so (unclear on timing) then a later request for SSH hangs (cannot ctrl+c, nothing). This now happens every single time. It is imperative that I get it sorted. The strange thing is that it behaves initially then starts to hang after several hours. I perused logs previously and nothing stood out. Any thoughts on where to start?

  Hi Everyone, I downloaded the sample code to request a rate from fedex's website... i placed the WSDL file in the proper location, I have my acct number, password, meter number, and key. When I run the script I get this error: Error in processing transaction.
